Design, fabrication and performance evaluation of a prototype multi-commodity food smoker
Abstract onlyThe study was conducted to design, fabricate and evaluate a prototype multi-commodity food smoker. Fabrication was done last July 2019 at a machine shop in Molo, Iloilo City while evaluation took place at the Appropriate Technology Center under the College of Agriculture, Resources, and Environmental Sciences of Central Philippine University in Jaro, Iloilo City from October 29, 2019 to November 14, 2019. The machine is composed of main parts made from food grade materials; namely, main frame, smoking chamber, door with sight glass, removable furnace, air regulator, chimney, smoke regulator, removable racks, rack holder and thermostats. It has an overall dimension of 53 cm L x 52 cm W x 50 cm H. The commodities used for smoking were milkfish, chicken breast and pork chop while the fuels used to supply heat and smoke were charcoal, coconut husks and coconut shell. Except for charcoal, these biomass fuels underwent disinfection by submerging them in boiling water. The machine can accommodate 0.990 kg of milkfish, 1.021 kg of chicken breast and 0.851 kg of pork chop per loading. The fuel consumption rate for milkfish, chicken breast and pork chop were 0.61 kg/hr, 0.71 kg/hr and 0.63 kg/hr, respectively. The percent shrinkage in all products ranged from 29.58 to 37.37%, while the heat utilization efficiency of the machine ranged from 12.53 to16.25%. The computed operating cost of the machine was PHP138.68 for milkfish, PHP134.47 for chicken breast and PHP161.33 for pork chop. Knowledge about marine conservation and marine conservation practices of households along coastal barangays of Manapla
Abstract onlyThis study was conducted to determine the level of knowledge about marine conservation and marine conservation practices of households along coastal areas of Manapla, Negros Occidental. The one-shot survey design using a researcher made questionnaire was used in gathering data needed from 300 respondents. All data were processed and analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). Descriptive statistics like frequency and percentage distribution and inferential statistics like Chisquare test were used in data analysis. Results revealed that the respondents were generally 31 to 45 years of age, married, Roman Catholic, with high school level of education, fisherman and had PHP10,000 and below income. The respondents have high level of knowledge and high level of practices about marine conservation. There was significant relationship between knowledge and educational attainment but there were no significant relationships between knowledge and age, civil status, religion, occupation and income. There were significant relationship in their practice and education, civil status, occupation and income but there were no significant relationships between practice and age and religion. A significant relationship was found between the knowledge about marine conservation and marine conservation practices of households along coastal area of Manapla, Negros Occidental.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Environmental Managemen
Technological skills in the digital era of school librarians in Iloilo City: Basis for a proposed training design
Abstract onlyThe descriptive study aims to determine the level of technological skills in the digital era of school librarians in Iloilo City as basis for a proposed training design. The respondents of the study were the school librarians in Iloilo City. This study both employed descriptive and inferential statistics to measure the variables under study. Frequency distribution, mean and rank were utilized as descriptive statistics. T-test and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were also utilized as inferential statistics using the Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) Software version 20. Results of the study found out that the school librarians in Iloilo demonstrate a “high” level of perceived technological skills with an average mean score of 4.04. However, there is a notable result found in the area of core applications of information tools and technologies which the school librarian responded a “moderate” result in demonstrating expertise in databases, metadata, information analysis and synthesis to improve retrieval and use in the organization. Additionally, in the area of core web tools, a “moderate” response was associated with the usage of web conferencing programs for synchronous, online meeting or learning and identifying and utilization of help menus, tutorials and support communities to acquire the necessary skills. The study inferred that it is a valid cognition of the rapid changing world of information, and the core web tools as product of emerging technologies and are seldom practiced or utilized by school librarians in the performance of their duties. Further, the results reveals that there were no significant differences noted on the level of technological skills when the respondents were classified according to age, educational attainment, length of experience, type of school library and number of ICT seminars/training attended for the last three years while sex and professional (librarian) eligibility status had a significant difference with their level of technological skills. Proposed "AA" slaughterhouse in Igbaras, Iloilo
Abstract onlyMeat like pork, beef, or chicken has been the staple food of humans for the past years in order to survive and as the years passed by, the demand for meat production increases. An effective facility is needed to cater this demand of the consumer. Public slaughterhouse, also called as an abattoir, is a building used for killing farm animals where the meat is intended for human consumption. It is made to accommodate the number of meat products and the expanding volume of livestock community. Thus, to address this demand of the consumers the local government of the Municipality of Igbaras proposed to construct an “AA” slaughterhouse at Barangay Poblacion III, Igbaras, Iloilo where it will also serve as a producer for the meat production of the neighboring municipalities.
The proposed project is made of reinforced concrete. The National Meat Inspection Service, National Structural Code of the Philippines (NSCP) 2010 and Ultimate Strength Design (USD) were used as the basis for the structural analysis of reinforced concrete members and design. Anaerobic treatment will be used to treat the waste water from the slaughterhouse in order to minimize the foul odor. The proposed project will occupy a total area of 1 ,593 square meters with an estimated duration of 188 days and a total estimated cost of Php 12,982,776.44 that will come from the fund of local government of Igbaras and private sectors that are interested to donate and help in the construction of the project.Includes bibliographic referencesBachelor of Science in Civil Engineerin
Design, fabrication, and evaluation of downdraft kiln for the production of lime from slipper-cupped oyster (Crassostrea iredalei, Faustino 1932) shells
Abstract onlySlipper-cupped oyster shell contains 95% calcium carbonate and is considered as a promising source of lime in the future. This study aimed to design, fabricate, and evaluate a downdraft kiln to produce lime from Slipper-cupped oyster shells. Three kilograms of shells were calcined at 200 C for 30, 60, and 90 minutes, respectively, with 50 "C increment up to 500 °C which was the highest temperature the kiln had withstood. Calcined shells were powdered using LA Abrasion equipment for 150 seconds and the products obtained were characterized by particle size distribution using the Standard Tyler Sieve and calcium oxide content analysis conducted by the Regional Feed Laboratory. The results for particle size distribution showed that at temperature of 300 °C and residence time of 60 minutes, particle sizes smaller than 0.3 mm is 55.66 percent of the total mass which is greater compared to other trials. The results for percent calcium oxide (CaO) showed that the optimum operating temperature and residence time of the downdraft kiln in calcining Slipper-cupped oyster shell must be at a temperature of 400 °C and residence time of thirty (30) minutes to produce 54.726 % CaO can be considered already a very high-quality lime. Acute dermal toxicity of pomelo (Citrus maxima) essential oil extract as mosquito repellant on rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus)
Abstract onlyThis study was designed for the purpose of evaluating acute dermal toxicity of Pomelo (Citrus maxima) peel essential oil extract which is known for its possible mosquito repellency in human and animals. This followed the limited availability of information regarding dermal toxicity of this citrus plant in Western Visayas (Region VI) despite the growing practice of utilizing the fruit peel essential oil as mosquito repellant. The fruit peel was subjected to steam distillation extraction process using aqueous solvent. All test animals were obtained from a New Zealand white rabbit breeder. Thus, acute dermal toxicity tests were conducted in healthy rabbits using the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) guidelines. Irritation indices a 00 result, thus according to Draize these are considered as no occurrence of erythema and edema since none of them could reach PII of 5. On the other hand, findings from acute dermal toxicity tests showed no any overt signs of toxicity after 72 hours of treatment. Findings from this study have shown that, extracts from the peel of C. maxima exhibit acute dermal toxicity effects. The findings therefore suggests that essential oil extracts from the peel of C. maxima under its use as mosquito repellant applied on skin of rabbits do not cause any adverse effects externally.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Pharmac
Mycelial growth of Philippine edible straw mushroom (Volvariella volvacea) grown in banana leaf culture medium added with different levels of table sugar
Abstract onlyThis study was conducted from January 30 to February 6, 2020 at the Western Visayas Integrated Agricultural Research Center (WESVIARC), Jaro, Iloilo City. This study aimed to determine the mycelial growth of Philippine edible straw mushroom (Volvariella volvacea) grown in banana leaf culture medium added with different levels of table sugar. The treatments consisted of different levels of table sugar such as: zero (control), 5, 10, 15, and 20 g/ per half liter of culture medium. The experimental treatments were laid out in a completely randomized design with three replications. Results of the study revealed that the first appearance of mycelia was observed from day 1 until day 2.7. The data showed that the mean no. of days to first mycelial appearance very slightly varied between 1.2 to 2.1 days (P>0.05). The highest spawning percentage (89%) was observed from the control culture medium and the one with 5 g of table sugar and lowest contamination percentage of 11%. The medium added with 10 g had 67% spawning percentage and 33% contamination. Moreover, the culture medium with 15 g and 20 g of table sugar had the lowest spawning and highest contamination percentage of 55.3% and 45%, respectively. Observed differences on both treatment means are not significantly different (P>0.05). Furthermore, the spawn-run diameter of Philippine edible straw mushroom (Volvariella volvacea) six days after inoculation revealed that spawn grown in control culture medium had the widest diameter of 5.93 cm, followed by 5 g of table sugar at 5.73 cm. Culture medium with 10 g and 15 g of table sugar had a spawn-run diameter of 4.90 cm and 4.83 cm, respectively. The narrowest spawn-run was obtained from culture medium with 20 g of table sugar at 4.20 cm. Just like other data calculated, statistical analysis revealed no significant difference (P>0.05) among treatment means.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Agricultur
Power demand medium term forecasting for Vitarich Corporation using data mining algorithm
Abstract onlyForecasting provides a well founded decision in making future developments, in maintaining a stable system, and in avoiding technical risks. This study focuses on data mining the historical records of Vitarich Corporation, a feed milling company, accumulated starting April 2013 until September 2019. Applying Multiple Linear Regression, this aims to project power demand in the next five years which will be the basis in understanding the power system. Using Minitab Statistical Software, data were processed and analyzed, then the results were accumulated and compared to the data analysis gathered from another built-in application namely IBM Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) in order to verify and secure its output forecast supervised by a professional statistician. It was determined during the first trial that only production was significant having the p-value equal to 0.0 while temperature, pressure, and humidity having p-values 0.505, 0.092, 0.864 respectively were out of range within the standard limit (0.0 - 0.05). Afterwhich, two succeeding reevaluations were done until it was observed that the residual result has a balanced standard deviation within the range (+4 to -4). Linear equation best fitted the model and gave the energy equation equal to 61822 + 1.1742 (PRODUCTION). The energy values were converted to its equivalent power values which is more vital in understanding capacity limit and power demand of Vitarich Corporation. Finally, it was determined that the system is still capable to withstand the requirement on the next five years having a forecasted power demand equal to 354.98 kW (443.72 kVA).Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Electrical Engineerin
Development of an online interactive module for grade 8 students’ speaking skills
Journal articleThis developmental research created an online interactive English module for Grade 8 students at a private high school in Guimaras. Specifically, this study utilized Input-Output (IPO) Model to identify the inputs, outputs, and processing tasks needed to transform inputs into outputs. For the inputs of the module, an interview and a performance task were given to the 23 Grade 8 students to evaluate their speaking abilities in terms of fluency, vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. This was essentially the result of the creation and testing of a module to assist the students in improving their speaking skills. It comprises the MELCS Grade Eight lessons as well as activities that might help students improve their speaking skills. The module's activities will help students improve their speaking skills in terms of fluency, grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. The respondents' fluency, vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation skills were adequate, but none of them excelled in pausing and pacing, clarity, or emotion. Pronunciation and vocabulary are strengths, but fluency and grammar are weaknesses, according to the respondents' overall speaking abilities. They were also unable to communicate because they were afraid of making grammatical errors
The early years learner curriculum for three to four-year-old children in the Philippines
Journal articleThis study aimed to develop a developmentally appropriate early years curriculum for three to four-year-old children in the Philippines based on best practices of the learning centers in Ontario, utilizing the developmental research and narrative inquiry approaches to curriculum development and data gathering. A diverse group of early childhood educators were sought for the interview using the purposive, criterion sampling method, with twelve fully participating, while a total of 51 responded for the survey. While respondents from Ontario favored child-led teaching experiences, Filipino educators are more subject-centered. However, when analyzed together, there are common best practices between the regions as well. The themes developed from the interviews and the results from the survey formed the foundations and the structure of the Early Years Learner Curriculum
