Abstract onlyThis study, entitled “Activated Carbon Obtained from “Saba” Banana Peels (Musa acum inata x balbisiana) as Filtering Medium in Jeepney Exhaust Muffler System”, aimed to design and construct an exhaust muffler system with activated carbon obtained from “Saba” banana peels as the filtering medium to adsorb the harmful emissions by diesel- fuelled jeepneys. This study shows a detailed experimental procedure of the production of activated carbon using pyrolysis process and the installation of the produced filter medium to the modified exhaust muffler system. Through a series of trials using smoke emission testing, results revealed the decrease of the number of hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and oxygen giving a result of an average of 0% emissions. Results for the smoke density or light absorption coefficient (k) indicated that the smoke density decreased substantially in trials 2, 3, 4, and 5, where the modified muffler was attached to the tailpipe of the jeepney. The final average value of the light absorption coefficient (k) was 0.39, which indicates that the jeepney had passed the smoke emission test while the standard value of the light absorption coefficient was at 2.20. For the production of the filtering medium, different ratios of activated carbon and bentonite must also be used and tested with several trials to identify the optimal design for the filter medium. The screen size for the casing of the filter medium must also be smaller in order to prevent the activated carbon particles from sifting through. In order to produce a larger surface area that could increase the adsorption capacity of the activated carbon, it is recommended to mold the activated carbon into granules.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Chemical Engineerin

Abstract onlyThis descriptive-analytical study determined the musical identity of Padayon as an original theme song for the Ilonggo Indie film SALVI. A total of thirty (30) participants who were graduates of Music Education and three (3) jurors purposively selected by the researcher based on achievement in the field of music, expertise, composition, and recognition participated in this study. The data were obtained through the use of a researcher-made questionnaire-checklist and an interview guide. The data were analyzed through mean and standard deviation. To strengthen the validity of the study, methodological triangulation was used through Researchers' Analysis followed by the Jurors Evaluation, and lastly, the Audience Evaluation. Narratives that were transcribed, analyzed, and documented by the researcher were based on the researcher's personal analysis, jurors' evaluation, and audience evaluation as per use of the original composition Padayon in the Indie film SALVI. Findings revealed that the elements of music were used appropriately in the film. In harmony, the key signature, chords, scales, and instruments were suited to the musical arrangement. Melody confirms that the melodic scale, melodic movement, and melodic impact suits the film's post-apocalyptic genre. Texture confirms that blended parts, polyphonic texture, equalization, and mixing achieved the character and plot build up in the film Salvi. Timbre states that the combination of affected sounds like a voice, guitar, drums, and orchestra instruments suits the overall impact of the film. Rhythm revealed that the tempo, rhythmic movement of the instrument, and voice complement each other in achieving the chaotic scenes of the film Salvi. Dynamics confirms that the overall volume and balance of the mix assisted in creating a chaotic and violent scenario. Lastly, the researcher came up with a researcher-made blueprint entitled LATAG: A Musical Ideology in Film Making. Latag is a Tagalog term (also used interchangeably in Hiligaynon) which means to spread out, to unfold and lay on the ground. Latag was used in this musical ideology to incorporate the integration of music and its use in films. These principles are featured in LATAG design figuratively presented inside a movie reel. The interlocking hexagons were positioned at the center of the steering reel which represents the film industry with the different elements in music encircles it which represents the music composition in film making. These identified ideologies of "LATAG" are factors that have hoped maneuvered the composer in creating theme songs in the film SALVI. Generally, the outcome revealed that the melody, rhythm, duration timbre, harmony, and dynamics of the song Padayon were appropriate to the Ilonggo Indie film Salvi. Harmony scored 3.87 out of 4 as perfect score the key signature, chords, scales, and instruments were suited to the musical arrangement. Melody (M=3.85) confirms that the melodic scale, melodic movement, and melodic impact are appropriate. Texture (M=3.84) agrees that blended parts, polyphonic texture, equalization, and mixing achieved the character and plot build up in the film Salvi. Timbre (M=3.80) states that the combination of affected sounds like a voice, guitar, drums, and orchestra instruments suits the overall impact of the film. Rhythm (M=3.86) revealed that the tempo, rhythmic movement of the instrument, and voice complement each other to achieve the message of the film Salvi. Dynamics (M=3.76) confirms that the overall volume and balance of the mix are appropriate to the Ilonggo Indie film Salvi.Includes bibliographical referencesMaster of Music Educatio

Abstract onlyThis study was conducted to produce and determine the durability of hollow blocks with shredded plastics as additive. The study conducted utilized shredded plastics, specifically Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) as additives in making concrete tile hollow blocks. The plastics were divided into those which were shredded finely and those that were shredded into strips. Three varying amounts of shredded plastics were tested for each type, as 200 g, 400 g and 600 g. Results of the study revealed that concrete hollow blocks made of Cement + sand + gravel + 200 g of Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) plastics shredded into strips has the highest compressive strength while cement + sand + gravel + 600 g of Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) shredded finely has the lowest compressive strength. All concrete hollow blocks were rough. The concrete blocks made of cement +sand +gravel was regarded as the most aesthetically pleasing. The concrete blocks made of cement + sand + gravel + Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) shredded finely (600g) was the lightest. Plastics shredded into strips at 200g as additive produced the most durable hollow block and can be a viable additive to increase the durability of hollow blocks.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Environmental Managemen

Abstract onlyIt is a known fact that mosquitoes carry many deadly diseases, and the continued increase of their numbers is considered a threat to humanity. The search for an efficient way of preventing mosquito bites has been a priority to the country. In this study the Pomelo (Citrus maxima), one of the largest citrus fruits from the family Rutaceae in 100% of peel extract concentration is as effective as the common commercial mosquito repellent in repelling mosquitoes. The effect of different treatments repelling mosquitoes is highly significant according to research findings. This study aimed to determine the acute dermal toxicity of Pomelo (Citrus maxima) peel extract as essential oil spray mosquito repellent on rabbits. Four rabbits were utilized in this study, two rabbits for the Patch test and also two rabbits for the Scratch test. Both composed of one male and one female. The fur was removed from the dorsal area of the trunk of the test animal by clipping or shaving. The fruit extract is reported to possess a variety of pharmacological benefits including antioxidant, antimicrobial anti-obesity, and antidiabetic properties. The fruit juice is reported to contain several flavonoids hence showing high antioxidant activity. However, no study of its toxic effect has been ignited. The information-seeking behavior of aquatic science librarians in response to a query

    No full text
Journal articleWhen searching for information in response to a query, their own library’s online public access catalog (OPAC) and databases remain the most preferred resource for most aquatic science librarians. This preference does not vary regardless of age, gender, educational degree, position or designation, country classification, or type of library. While the Internet acts as a supplement to the library collection, whenever the requested information is not available at the library, librarians prefer Googling instead of looking at other sources. Other than aquatic science-specific open access repositories and databases, some of the librarians have identified Google Scholar, DOAJ, ResearchGate, and Academia, among many others as valuable resources that help them fulfill their clientele’s query

Abstract onlyMosquito-borne diseases are spread by the bite of an infected mosquito. Diseases that are spread people by mosquitoes include Chikungunya, Malaria, and Dengue. One way to control mosquito bites is by using mosquito repellent from a natural source. Pomelo (Citrus maxima) has major active constituent limonene, occurs naturally in citrus fruits. In this study, the researchers extracted essential oil from Pomelo (Citrus maxima) peel and used a water-steam distillation method. The formulation and 50% lotion formulation. Pomelo peel oils have that specific aroma that can be used: as a mosquito lotion repellent. Triethanolamine is a pH stabilizer/ neutralizer for the skin and oleic acid serves as a moisturizer when rubbed to the skin. Iodine test; was used for testing the presence of limonene and other unsaturated compounds in the clear Pomelo (Citrus maxima) peel extracted by water-steam distillation. Mosquito larvae for the repellency testing were collected from stagnant waters. They were put into different containers provided with a mosquito net bonded on top, where it was left to develop into an adult mosquito. The adult mosquito, placed in the container were placed inside the cage where repellency testing will be performed. New Zealand white rabbits were used as a test subject for this study. The rabbit's skin is shaved and divided into four (4) quadrants and were placed in separate cages together with the trapped adult mosquitoes. Quadrant A (Positive Control Off lotion), Quadrant B (Negative Control Lotion base), Quadrant C (75% concentration Lotion formulation), Quadrant D (50% concentration Lotion formulation) were applied on the rabbits shaved skin. The rabbits were then exposed to mosquitoes by removing the mosquito net bonded using a thread for fourteen hours and was check every two hours (2) for mosquito bites. The gathered data and results showed only one (1) to two (2) mosquito landings and bites on the tested area.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Pharmac
