Fish attracting device
Special paper abstractFishing is important to the Philippine industry. The people of the country are highly dependent in this livelihood. According to the statistics, there are about 1.6 million Filipinos who are part of the country’s fishing industry. 85% of those are comprised by municipal fisheries sector, followed by aquaculture which comprises the 14% and 1% are from commercial fishing. In recent years, there is a noticeable trending decline on the production of fish in the country and municipal fishermen is most affected by this trend as time goes on. This study aimed to develop a device which attracts fish by using the study of sound waves and LED lights. This device is sought to decrease the wait time and indicate if there are fishes around. This can be used by municipal fisheries sector as well as recreational fishers and also by aquaculture sector. This device revolves around the principles of sound wave which is produced by multi-vibrators, and principles of light. The device exhibited great results and performed according to its specifications. Factors affecting the performance of Sangguniang Kabataan based on RA 10742 in the Municipality of Janiuay, Iloilo
Abstract onlyThis study was conducted primarily to determine the factors affecting the performance of the elected Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) in Janiuay, Iloilo, a town in Western Visayas, based on Republic Act (RtractA) 10742, the SK Reform Law of 2015, the current governing law of the local youth organization. Using descriptive-correlational research, employing a researcher-made questionnaire for data gathering, 47 respondents were included in this study. The results showed that the SK in Janiuay had a low level of performance. The findings indicated that the respondents were mostly single adults, and who were college graduate. Most of them received an adequate amount of honorarium, and majority of barangays, classified as rural, were allocated a moderate annual budget. This budget size depends on multiple factors, particularly the general fund of the barangay. They were also highly supported by the organization. This study resulted in the conclusion that as a factor in the performance of the SK, only age had a strong relationship with it, which indicates that the new law was correct in increasing the age bracket. Hence, there were other intrinsic factors which contributed to the low performance, such as lack of creativity or innovation. Thus, it is recommended that the SK foster a sense of creativity and resourcefulness in coming up with projects and programs. A deeper understanding of the inherent factors of the individual youth in community participation may be the critical next step in progressing SK as a mechanism for national development.Includes bibliographical referencesMaster in Public Administratio
A proposed design of disaster risk reduction and management building in Concepcion, Iloilo
Abstract onlyNatural disasters can appear quite suddenly which brings wide-ranging consequences for the people of the affected area. The impacts of such calamities are often dramatically worse in developing countries, like the Philippines. One of the high-risk municipalities is Concepcion, Iloilo. The Municipality of Concepcion is graphically located in the Northern Iloilo which is prone to storm, flood, earthquake, tsunami, and landslide. Because of these, as such, the municipality needs to adopt disaster risk reduction and management; and climate change adaptation and increases in levels of vulnerability especially in areas affected by internal disputes. To effectively reduce losses to human lives, information, natural resources, and other assets in the municipality, the idea of constructing a disaster risk reduction and management building was proposed. The proposed building is a two-storey structure that has a lot area of 160 square meters. It includes different management rooms and accommodation for 24/7 on duty responders. Also, it has a 70-person capacity conference room. This building is made of reinforced concrete, designed using USD method and loads referred from NSCP 2010. Included are the detailed cost estimates and bill of materials, and the Critical Path Methods (CPM) diagram for construction. The proposed structure is self-sufficient because it can function normally in times of blackout and other unprecedented interruptions and calamities. Solar panels are integrated into the structure that will serve as a source of electricity. The construction of the proposed structure has a deviation estimated cost of 11,000,000 PHP, between the local government of Concepcion and private sectors.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Civil Engineerin
Design and practice of chemistry teachers' workshop supported by virtual reality technology
Journal articleIntroducing virtual reality technology into the chemistry teachers' workshops can motivate teachers immersion and participation in workshop, and promote the research effect of the workshops, which is beneficial the professional development of teachers. Based on the characteristic of chemistry subject, this paper focus on the scheme and effect of introduction virtual reality technology into teachers' workshop. A comparative experiment is used to discuss the practical effect of teachers' workshop. By designing a framework strategy, virtual reality technology is introduced in teachers' workshop, the experimental group (51) and the control group (58) was established for comparative study. Adopt the method of quantitative analysis to evaluate the quantitative and qualitative data of knowledge sharing. Particularly, by utilizing the Kappa value estimated the consistency of table that measures the quality of knowledge sharing. The experimental group is superior to the control group in terms of login frequency, average online time and quality of knowledge sharing content. It logged in 2.5 times a day for an average of 1.7 hours, however, the control group with an average of 0.9 hours. The experimental group average 1.38 posts were greater than the control group with average 0.78 posts which issued by each teacher. Then, the average score of "theme" in the experimental group was higher than the experimental group about 1.7344 point, in the quality of knowledge sharing. And, the average score of contribution in the experimental group was higher than the control group too. The experimental results show that the introduction of virtual reality technology in the workshop can effectively improve the enthusiasm and participation of teachers, the teachers' research effect in this designed workshop also was increased significantly
The efficacy of different botanicals against rice weevil (Sitophilus oryzae L.)
Abstract onlyThis study was conducted at Central Philippine University, Jaro, Iloilo City from November 12, 2019 to December 2, 2019. The objective of the study was to determine the percent rice grain weight loss, percent mortality and percent survival of rice weevils. The study utilized the same amount (20 g) of dried leaves of botanicals namely: hagonoy (Chromolaena odorata L.), guava (Psidium guajava L.), madre de cacao (Gliricidia sepium Jacq. Steud.), alagau ( Premna odorata Blanco), lantana (Lantana camara L.), lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus DC. Stapf,) and citronella (Cymbopogon nardus L. Rendle) against rice weevil (Sitophilus oryzae L.). Fifty grams of rice grains without dried leaves of botanicals served as negative control. The treatments were laid out in a completely randomized design with three replications. Ten rice weevils (5 males : 5 females) placed in each plastic containers, containing 50 g of rice grains with corresponding treatments and kept at room temperature for 20 days. The percent rice grain weight loss, mortality, and survival of rice weevils was recorded for one-week at one- day interval with the final observation taken at day 19. The result of the study revealed that Alagau had the highest rice weevil mortality of (30 to 66.66 %) at 1 DAI to 5 DAI while on the 7 DAI and 19 DAI, all the botanicals showed 80 to 100% mortality on rice weevils. Consequently, there is a reverse relationship between the mortality and survival. Meanwhile, the percent grain weight loss of all grains with botanicals were lower compared with those of the untreated grains. The use of the botanicals had showed a potential in the control of rice weevils in storage, supported by the decreased survival of the weevils as the mortality increased.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Agricultur
Effects of distraction strategy in the level of pain of pediatric patients undergoing intravenous insertion in a selected hospital in Aklan
Abstract onlyThis true experimental specifically posttest only control group design investigated the effects of distraction strategy in the level of pain of 45, male, pediatric patients undergoing intravenous insertion in a hospital in Aklan. The pain rating scale that was utilized in the study was FLACC scale, evaluated by the institution’s anesthesiologist. The study revealed that among the three groups, the lowest average level of pain upon insertion was manifested by the pediatric patients who had animated cartoon film as distraction strategy. Furthermore, the study revealed that there is a significant difference in the average level of pain among the comparison group and experimental group. Moreover, the study revealed that the use of animated cartoon film was better than the conventional intravenous insertion care approach in reducing the pain levels manifested by the pediatric patients. Therefore, the use of animated cartoon film as distraction strategy during intravenous insertion was better than the conventional intravenous insertion care approach in reducing the pain levels manifested by the pediatric patients. Hence, this experimental study concludes that distraction strategy, with the use of animated cartoon film can help reduce the level of pain of pediatric patients undergoing painful medical procedures such as intravenous insertion.Includes bibliographical referencesMaster of Arts in Nursin
Solar powered compressor type aerator with smart monitoring system
Abstract onlyBeing a country with a geography containing 7,107 islands made the Philippines value aquaculture towards growth and prosperity. Low dissolved oxygen levels, algal blooms, as well as off-limit temperatures and pH concentrations, have killed potential harvests that might have benefitted the local farmers. Thus, many inventions and innovations were created to mitigate these problems, and one of them is called an aerator. However, operational cost and unavailability of grid electricity to aerators have added burden to aquaculture production. The Solar Powered Compressor Type Aerator with Smart Monitoring System is made up of a compressor type aerator that is powered by pure renewable solar energy and a battery bank capable of 1-day autonomy. In addition, it has sensors such as Dissolved oxygen sensor, temperature sensor and pH sensors, Arduino Uno that collects data and make decisions based on the data given, and a mobile application that can control the device and monitor the data remotely using Bluetooth technology. Two pairs of red and green LED lights indicate visual alarms which are especially useful if mobile app notification is out of range. 4 PVC floaters with 6-inch diameter are used to make a 1m by 1m raft to keep the device afloat. The device was able to automatically maintain the range of acceptable D.O. level in the water within approximate radius of 6.5m. The device has an ingress protection of IP44. Through the use of the device, the local fish farmers may have smart control, smart monitoring and management of their business without compromising profit.Includes bibliographic referencesBachelor of Science in Electrical Engineerin
In vitro antibacterial activity of freeze dried asiatic bitter yam, betel nut, and garlic against Staphylococcus aureus R. in Philippine native chicken
Abstract onlyThe study was conducted from November 11 to 13, 2020 at the CPU-CARES R & D Learning Center, Jaro, Iloilo City. The objective of the study was to evaluate the in vitro antibacterial activity of freeze dried asiatic bitter yam, betel nut, and garlic against S. aureus Rosenbach in Philippine native chicken. The experimental treatments were laid out in a completely randomized design with three replications. The treatments consisted of freeze dried asiatic bitter yam, betel nut, and garlic. Amtyl 500 antibiotic was used as the positive control and distilled water as the negative control. The potency of the freeze dried treatments was analyzed through zones of inhibition (ZOI) 24 hours after the application of the experimental treatments. Result of the study revealed that S. aureus applied with freeze dried treatments developed ZOI that are statistically wider than those in distilled water but narrower than that in Amtyl 500. On the other hand, based on the performance standards for antimicrobial susceptibility testing, S. aureus exhibited resistance to freeze dried asiatic bitter yam and distilled water. Freeze dried garlic and betel nut treatments showed susceptibility which is similar with the result interpretation on the Amtyl 500.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Agricultur
Knowledge about solid waste management and solid waste management practices among households of Barangay Poblacion, Leon, Iloilo
Abstract onlyThis study was conducted to determine the level of knowledge and practices about solid waste management among households in Brgy. Poblacion, Leon, Iloilo. The one shot survey design was used in gathering data from 296 households from 7 zones in Barangay Poblacion, Leon, Iloilo using a researcher made questionnaire. All data were processed and analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). Descriptive statistics like frequency and percentage distribution and inferential statistics like t-test, ANOVA and Chi-square test were used as bases of interpretation. Results of the study revealed that the respondents are generally males, 31 to 40 years old, Roman Catholic, married, have graduated from college, vendors, with an average income of PHP9,797.30 monthly, and a household size of 4 and below. They have a high level of knowledge about solid waste management and moderate level of solid waste management practices. There were no significant differences in knowledge about solid waste management according to the respondents' sex, civil status, and household size, but there were significant differences in knowledge about solid waste management according to the respondents’ age, religion, educational attainment, occupation, and monthly income. There were no significant differences in solid waste management practices according to the respondents’ age, sex, religion, and civil status but there were significant differences in solid waste management practices according to the respondents’ educational attainment, occupation, monthly income, and household size. There was a significant relationship between level of knowledge of the respondents about solid waste management and solid waste management practices. The households generated an average of 2.39 kg of solid wastes per day or about a ton (872.35 kg) of solid wastes per year.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Environmental Managemen
