    Study of the levels of harmonics in Central Philippine University

    Abstract onlyThis study was conducted to determine the levels of harmonics in Central Philippine University. Harmonic content and power factor data of the 12 transformer banks in the university were gathered using Fluke 1735-three phase power logger Survey of the connected loads and defective electrical and electronic devices in all the buildings and functional areas of the university was conducted The type of device were correlated with the harmonic order with the aid of Pearson Correlation Analysis. After the data analysis of the THDV and TDD content of each transformer bank, it was found out that the levels of harmonics in CPU electrical system are all in the acceptable range based on the IEEE Std-519. It has been found out that switched-mode power supply devices and ACU/Refrigerator have no linear relationship with the harmonic orders 3rd, 5th, and 7th. Variable Speed drives have moderate negative linear relationship with 7th harmonic content in line C. Lighting devices have moderate positive linear relationship with 7th harmonic content in line B. Heating devices have moderate negative linear relationship with 3rd harmonic content in line B and strong negative linear relationship with 7th harmonic content in line B. The levels of harmonics were not considered as the main contributors of the recorded defective devices. With the gathered and analyzed data, it has been concluded that the buildings in Central Philippine University are not susceptible to the impacts of harmonics. The gathered power factor and TDD per line in each bank have shown no significant linear relationship.Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineerin

    Academic motivation and online engagement of graduate students

    Abstract onlyVarious studies have been conducted on motivation and engagement separately among students, however, only few studies talk about the Academic Motivation of graduate students and the use of engagement as a dependent variable. Studies conducted also were usually on participants who were on the normal school setting. This study looked into the Academic Motivation and Online Student Engagement of 133 graduate student participants using the ERG Theory to see if this would yield to similar or different results. Using the Descriptive Correlational Research Design, the study revealed that graduate students are highly Academically Motivated (x̄ =5.092) in terms of Professional Growth, Better Job Opportunities, Self-fulfillment, Achieving Future Goals and Plans and for Other People. However, there were no measurable difference between age (p >0.511), sex (p> 0.739), residence (p >0.067), post-graduate degree (p > 0.890) and occupation (p > 0.560) towards Academic Motivation. Participants were also highly Engaged Online (x̄=3.6529) for they seek Intellectual Advancement, Interpersonal Engagement, Personal Commitment to Studies and Career/Job Opportunities. There was a significant difference when grouped according to sex (p 0.322) and post graduate degree (p > 0.362). The study yielded significant relationship between Academic Motivation and Online Student Engagement (p<0.003). Graduate students find Time Management as the greatest struggle followed by Personal Problems, Work-School-Life Balance, Online Class, Work and School thus a Proposed Psychosocial Program for Graduate Students: Kaya, Kinakaya at Kakayanin! was recommended by the researcher.Includes bibliographical referencesMaster of Arts in Psycholog

    Design, fabrication, and performance testing of remote-controlled, self-propelled lifebouy for a single drowning victim

    Abstract onlyThis project study aimed to design, fabricate, and test a remote-controlled, self- propelled lifebuoy that can save a single and conscious drowning victim. This project was made to rescue the drowning victim without endangering the life of the rescuer. This device is much faster as compared to lifeguard’s average time of swim to reach and save the victim, which can lessen the health risk or complication of the victim. This lifebuoy carries an inflatable floatation device that inflates through a mechanism controlled by the operator of the buoy just before it reaches the drowning victim where he/she can easily grasp. This inflatable floatation device will serve as the drowning victim’s aid to stay afloat while slowly being pulled by the lifebuoy towards a safe place for appropriate medical attention and care. This project is composed of inflatable floatation device, brushless motor, water jet pump thruster, li-po battery, radio transmitter, servo motor, and electronic speed controller. This device could travel and operate at fair to moderate weather and is capable of saving a drowning victim with a distance up to 300 meters.     Assessment of guidance services in a state university: Basis for an enhancement program

    Journal articleThis study was conducted to assess the guidance services in terms of its awareness, access to, availment, and satisfaction with the guidance services among 361 randomly selected students in a university for the School Year 2018 – 2019. Descriptive study was utilized. It sought to determine relationships between respondents' characteristics such as sex, year level and course to their awareness, access to, and availment of the guidance services. The respondents were generally female, fourth year, and in the field of Hotel and Restaurant Technology course. Majority of the respondents are aware, have access to, availed and were satisfied with the guidance services. Results revealed that majority of the respondents are aware, have access to, availed and satisfied with the guidance services specifically the assistance rendered by a licensed guidance counselor, an interview with students to know their concerns, records that provide an overview of personal needs and concerns of every student, and a service that discusses similar concerns with other students and attendance to conferences where students can learn something important. Of the variables considered, year level and course have significant relationship with the awareness, access to, availment, and satisfaction with the guidance services

    Evaluation of the in vitro antibacterial activity of guava (Psidium guajava L.) leaf alcohol extracts against Staphylococcus aureus R. in Philippine native chicken

    The study was conducted from July 22 to 30, 2020 at the Department of Life Sciences Laboratory, Central Philippine University, Jaro, Iloilo City. The objective of this study was to evaluate the in vitro antibacterial activity of guava leaf alcohol extracts against Staphylococcus aureus R. The experimental treatments were laid out in completely randomized design (CRD) with three replications. The treatments consist of guava leaves (GL) acetone, GL ethanol, and GL methanol extracts, and GL pure extract. Tetracycline and distilled water were used as positive and negative control, respectively. The anti-bacterial activity of guava leaf extracts was analyzed through zones of inhibition (ZOI) 24 hours after the application of the controlling treatments. Study revealed that the GL acetone ethanol, methanol and pure extracts had significantly (p <0.05) inhibited the growth of S. aureus. Furthermore, these guava extracts had comparable efficacy to the Tetracycline antibiotic. However, the use of pure extract is the most practical since it requires only a simple juice extraction procedure. On the other hand, distilled water showed no effect in controlling S. aureus. Based on the interpretative criteria using a disc diffusion susceptibility testing, S. aureus showed resistance to distilled water while intermediate susceptibility to Tetracycline antibiotic, GL ethanol and acetone extracts.     Error analysis in the written texts of pre-service teachers

    Abstract onlyObjectives This study analyzes the errors found in the written texts of BSED English Major Pre-Service Teachers of Central Philippine University, Iloilo City. Specifically, this seeks to identify the errors found in the written texts in terms of the following categories: omission, addition, selection and misordering and also the interlingual and intralingual sources of such errors. Furthermore, this develops an intervention program and designs a monograph that can be used in teaching writing specifically on eliminating errors. The College students especially those Pre-Service Teachers are expected to be proficient in their writing skills even though writing is considered to be the most difficult of all the other macro skills such as listening, speaking and reading. Considering that writing errors are innate part of learning, teachers are expected to continuously evaluate errors to find out how learners learn and what difficulties they experience in learning the second language. This analysis of the written texts of PreService Teachers, specifically focusing on errors, their categories and their sources serves as a valuable contribution to the growing body of knowledge of linguistic studies especially in the University. Methodology The linguistic method used in this study is Corder’s Error Analysis, a qualitative research design. Error Analysis is a set of procedures for identifying, describing and explaining learners’ errors. This constitutes a set of procedures that begins with the (1) collection of Pre-Service Teachers’ written production, (2) identification of errors in the written texts (3) describing or categorizing the errors into omission, addition, selection, and misordering, and (4) explaining where these errors come from. After which, an Intervention Program is developed to give the students the opportunity to discover their writing difficulties, and review them with the fundamentals of writing. Finally, a monograph with the title, “Writing Fundamentals for Pre-Service Teachers" is designed to serve as a learning material to help the future teachers understand the essentials of reflective texts and also assist them to improve their writing. This study has utilized its verbal data from the written texts which are part of the required portfolio or logbook of the 11 BSED English Major Pre- Service Students of Central Philippine University, in Iloilo City. Findings This study yields the following analytical data in response to the sub problems raised: (1) The Written Texts of the BSED English Major Pre-Service Teachers contain errors and they are categorized into: omission, addition, selection, and misordering. The following omissions are observed: past tense marker “d”, auxiliary “be”, plural noun marker "s”, articles “a” and “the”, prepositions “to” and “of’, pronoun “it” and some conjunctions that caused the incorrect structure of the sentences. As regards addition, the following are identified: “be” verb, verb phrase, plural noun marker “s”, article “a”, the preposition "to”, modifiers, and prepositional phrases. As to selection, the following are preferred: present tense instead of past tense, plural noun marker "s”, articles “a” as a substitute of “the”, pronoun “you” as an alternative of “I” , preposition “to” in place of “for”, and some wordy expressions that contributed to the contrasting meaning of the expressions. The following misorderings are observed: run-ons or fused sentences, comma splices, and dangling modifiers which contributed to the ill-formed structure of the sentences; (2) The errors are attributed to two sources: interlingual and intralingual. The types of intralingual errors made are divided into (a) omission of past tense “d” marker, auxiliary "be”, and plural noun marker “s”, (b) addition of verb auxiliary “be”, verb phrase, plural noun marker “s”, and article “a”, (c) selection of present tense instead of past tense, plural noun marker “s”, article “a” as an alternative of “the”, “the” instead of the determiner “that”, pronoun “you” in place of “I”, preposition “to” as an alternative of “for”, and some verbose expressions. Specifically, these intralingual errors are produced by the Pre-Service Teachers as they make use of their different learning strategies such as: overgeneralization, ignorance of rule restrictions, incomplete application of rules, and false hypothesis of concepts. On the other hand, interlingual errors found in written texts are divided into 3 subcategories, they are: omission of articles “the” and “a”, prepositions "to" and "of" pronoun “it” and dependent clauses, addition of prepositions “to”, modifiers, prepositional phrases, and misordering of sentence structure such as run-ons, comma splices and, dangling modifiers. Generally, these interlingual errors are caused by negative transfer, native language interference, and literal translation; (3) The study develops an intervention scheme or program to help the Pre-Service Students improve their writing skills; and also (4) This designs a monograph that will be used in teaching or improving the Pre-service Students’ Writing Skills. Recommendations Based on the findings of the study, the following are recommended: (1) Error analysis is a valuable tool that must be used by English teachers to identify students’ particular errors or writing weaknesses; (2) Students must be allowed to compare their L1 from L2 through a series of translation activities so that they will be able to see the difference between two languages plus a direct feedbacking should follow to assist them in their writing deficiencies; (3) There is a need to conduct an intensive intervention session with the students to address their grammatical problems and to assist them in their writing problems particularly in the appropriate use of verbs, nouns, articles, vocabulary, and sentence structure; and (4) Design an appropriate, and of high quality teaching materials such as monograph that contains learning exercises to address students’ writing needs.Includes bibliographical referencesDoctor of Philosophy in English Languag

    A multi-hazard risk prioritisation framework for cultural heritage assets

    Journal articleMulti-hazard risk assessment of building portfolios is of primary importance in natural-hazard-prone regions, particularly for the prioritisation of disaster risk reduction and resilience-enhancing strategies. In this context, cultural heritage assets require special consideration because of their high vulnerability to natural hazards – due to ageing and types of construction – and their strong links with communities from both an economic and a historical–sociocultural perspective. This paper introduces a multi-hazard risk prioritisation framework specifically developed for cultural heritage assets. The proposed framework relies on a multilevel rapid-visual-survey (RVS) form for the multi-hazard exposure data collection and risk prioritisation of case-study assets. Because of the multilevel architecture of the proposed RVS form, based on three levels of refinement and information, an increasing degree of accuracy can be achieved in the estimation of structural vulnerability and, ultimately, structural risk of the considered assets. At the lowest level of refinement, the collected data are used for the computation of seismic-risk and wind-risk prioritisation indices, specifically calibrated in this study for cultural heritage assets with various structural and non-structural features. The resulting indices are then combined into a unique multi-hazard risk prioritisation index in which the intangible value of cultural heritage assets is also considered. This is achieved by defining a score expressing the cultural significance of the asset. The analytic hierarchy process is extensively used throughout the study to reduce the subjectivity involved in the framework, thus obtaining a simplified yet robust approach which can be adapted to different building typologies. The proposed framework is applied to 25 heritage buildings in Iloilo City, Philippines, for which innovative, non-invasive techniques and tools for improved surveying have also been tested. Thermal and omnidirectional cameras have helped in the collection of structural data, together with drones for the inspection of roofs. Results of the study are presented and critically discussed, highlighting advantages and drawbacks of the use of new technologies in this field.British Council (grant no. 414707017

    Hybrid solar-wind powered street lights

    Abstract onlyThis research aimed to plan, construct, and test a Hybrid Solar-Wind Powered Street Light, a prototype system, for Dumangas- Barotac Road. Since Dumangas-Barotac Road holds multiple records vehicular accidents at night time, it is identified with the strongest wind speed of 28 km/hr., classifying it as Zone 2 in the Wind Load Map. Additionally, Photovoltaic (PV) cells and wind generator guarantee a reputation of free, ecological and inbounded electricity source. This Hybrid Solar-Wind Powered Street Light was advanced to let students gain an understanding of how to utilize solar and wind energy and its operation. The project is composed of a photovoltaic module, wind turbine, street lamp, battery, inverter, light switch and a charge controller. Solar energy and wind are used as sources for input power. The wind power is absorbed by the wind wheel which rotates the wind generator that produces electrical energy. Current that passes along the rectifier’s controller goes through voltage stabilizing effect that transfigure alternating current to direct current. Electric energy is then stocked in the battery after charging. For the solar energy, it is converted to direct current through photovoltaic effect. The stocked electric power is stored for standby or will be consumed by the load. Testing (be more specific here, like testing of the solar panel, electric power, etc.) was done from 8:00 AM up to 6:00 PM. The solar PV output was recorded every hour as well as the wind generator system for five days.
