Assessment of the disaster preparedness of UP Visayas Library at Miagao and Iloilo City campuses: A basis for the development of a disaster risk reduction program

    Get PDF
Abstract onlyDisaster preparedness is one aspect of the library that is commonly neglected. This study looked into the disaster preparedness of the libraries of UP Visayas Miagao and Iloilo campuses. The self-formulated checklist, gathered from the Manitoba paradigm, was used for gathering data, serving both as interview guide and for ocular inspection. Basic building characteristics and requirements of both campus libraries met standards of permanency and materials used. However, with age and earthquake experiences there is an urgent need for example for plastering of cracks on concrete walls and provide fire-retardation of wooden walls among others. There was an apparent lack of sufficient safety features as fire extinguishers among others. There was no record of remedial measures or enhancement by the school administration. The personnel still lacked critical disaster emergency skills added to regular realistic drills as CPRs. Other support components should include fire truck, ambulance, and even municipality fire assistance. With the awareness of the above, therefore, a proposed disaster risk reduction program is being submitted for considerations.Includes bibliographical referencesMaster in Library and Information Scienc

It is composed of the following main parts: a) decorticating blades, b) scraper block, c) decorticating drum, d) input chute, e) output chute, f) engine and belt drive assembly, and g) machine frame. This study was completed within 4 months including pretesting and modifications. It has an overall dimension of 950 mm L x 850 mm W x 950 mm H and weighs 56 kg including the engine. The fiber is extracted through the scraping action produced between the blades and the scraper block. The machine produced an average fiber length of 1,750 mm and elongation of 15.1 mm. It has a fiber recovery rate of 1.71% and an output capacity of 2.10 kg/hr of dry fiber and 3.68% and 5.52 kg/hr of dry fiber, using overmature and harvestable stalks, respectively. The machine consumed 0.73 li/hr of gasoline fuel to produce 2.10 kg/hr of dry fiber. As computed, its operating cost is PHP10.05/kg of fiber. For the quality of the fiber, it produced a fiber grade AD-1, the highest fiber grade for machine-cleaned fiber based on the sight evaluation conducted. With a buying price of AD-1 at PHP60.00/kg, the estimated daily income that can be generated is between PHP1,008.00/day to PHP2,649.6/day.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Agricultural Engineerin

Comparative study of the anti-bacterial activity of fresh and air-dried purslane (Portulaca oleracea L.) extract against the animal strain Staphylococcus aureus R. in Philippine native chicken

    Get PDF
Abstract onlyStaphylococcus aureus R. has always been associated with poultry animals. Both humans and chickens can be carriers of the strains and the degree of pathogenicity depends on the level of immunity of the host. The best-known Staphylococcal infections are septicaemia and gangrenous dermatitis. The objective of the study is to compare and evaluate the efficacy of fresh and air-dried powder purslane (Portulaca oleracea L.) extracts against S. aureus. The anti-bacterial activity of purslane extract was determined by the zone of inhibition (ZOI). Results of the study revealed that S. aureus R. is highly resistant (values at ≤6 mm) to methanol solvent and distilled water (negative control) while the strain was intermediately susceptible (11.47 to 21.60 mm) to fresh methanolic extract (FrME) with an average zone of inhibition (ZOI) of 14.80 mm. On the other hand, S. aureus R. showed resistance (values at ≤11.46 mm) on the agar well while being applied with powder methanolic extract (PwME) by having an average ZOI of 10.76 mm. This was followed by the purslane juice extract (4.87 mm) and purslane aqueous extract (6.40 mm). These results prove the presence of anti-bacterial properties of purslane which caused the limited formations of the zone of inhibition.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Agricultur

    Get PDF
Abstract onlyIn an increasing competition in the market, it is important for an organization to maintain a high quality service not only in providing services to external clients but to internal clients as well. Service quality is a key factor to gain clients’ loyalty and satisfaction and employees’ work-related characteristics are important factors to achieve quality service. Delays in the performance of service and unable to inform clients with turn-around time of service are pointed out in an audit conducted to Field Legal Services Department in government banks in Iloilo City. Therefore, the study was conducted to assess the service quality of FLSD in relation to employees’ work-related characteristics such as: empathy, reliability, responsiveness and assurance. The study employed quantitative-correlation approach and purposive sampling to gather and analyse the data. The data were gathered from the 70 respondents assigned in the four client-units of FLSD, namely: Agrarian Office Center, Lending Center, Accounting Center and West Visayas Branches Group. The overall findings revealed that work-related characteristics of employees in terms of empathy, reliability, responsiveness and assurance are all “excellent”. However, among the four work-related characteristics, assurance achieved the highest mean which means that it is the most influential variable that affects the quality of service. As per quality of service, timeliness and accuracy are found to be “excellent”. The result showed that there is high positive correlation between the work-related characteristics in terms of empathy, reliability, responsiveness and the quality of service in terms of timeliness, while correlation between assurance and timeliness revealed to be very high. The conduct of this study also revealed that all work-related characteristics in terms of empathy, reliability, responsiveness, assurance and the quality of service in terms of accuracy have the same high positive correlation. Therefore, all the null hypothesis were rejected. Based on the results, it revealed that the FLSD was able to conduct interventions to solve the issues. The availability of Internal Management System (IMS) and being covered with the Memorandum Circular 2016-1, the government bank employees were compelled to provide quality services and ensure that issues regarding the performance of service must be addressed properly in order to meet the objectives of their specific department & be qualified for the Performance-Based-Bonus (PBB). Consequently, to maintain an excellent service quality, this study recommended for the FLSD to have a feedback form to be given to the clients at least every quarter of the year in order to monitor and assess whether excellent the quality of service provided is maintained. For the government bank institutions, to continually strengthen human resource capacity through trainings. This study recommended for the clients to be fully aware of the services and the standard process followed by the FLSD. They must likewise be open to ask the FLSD employees if there is any clarification needed about the service. For other employees of the bank to make an effort to reach out to FLSD when complex issues within their office arises. Lastly, for future researchers to conduct further studies about legal departments from other government and private bank Institutions to determine whether there are any similarities in the findings. They too could explore the difference on the types of services offered and the prescribed process between legal departments in government and private banks.Includes bibliographical referencesMaster in Public Administratio

Abstract onlyAquaculture is one of the food sources in the Philippines. One product of aquaculture is catfish. Currently, the main problem encountered is inefficient catfish breeding. Thus, this study was conducted to determine the effect of brood stock weight on the quality of eggs and survival percentage of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus B.). This was conducted on December 2 to 9, 2019 at Central Philippine University, Research and Development Building, Catfish Hatchery, Jaro, Iloilo City. The treatments were the different weight of female brood stock which were 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 kilogram. These were laid out in a completely randomized design (CRD) and replicated three times. The experimental catfish were obtained from CPU- Zarraga Farm, Zarraga, Iloilo. Results revealed that percent fertilization and percent hatchability of eggs of catfish increases as the body weight increases from 0.5 to 1.5 kg then decreases beyond 1.5 kg. Survival percentage of catfish fry was found to decrease as the weight increases from 0.5 to 1.5 kg then increases when brood stock weight is more than 1.5 kg. However, statistical analysis showed no significant differences (P>0.5) among treatments. This indicates that whatever the weight of the female catfish, it can still be used for reproduction. This excessive mortality on catfish fry may be due to high ammonia content which means that the ammonia content on the water should be minimized to ensure high survival percentage of catfish fries.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Agricultur

Eschatology in Galatians through the lens of Paul and its implications to the teachings of eschatology among Filipino Christian churches

    Get PDF
Abstract onlyThe study aimed to analyze eschatology in Galatians through the lens of Paul and its implications to the understanding of eschatology among Filipino Christian Churches in Mindanao. The design used was descriptive in content that highlighted the historical narrative of Paul in selected passages of Galatians. Specifically, the study aimed to: discuss the sociocultural, education and religious background of Paul and how this shaped his understanding of eschatology; discuss his understanding of eschatology in Galatians through exegesis; examine Filipino Christian Churches' teachings on eschatology; and draw out implications of Paul’s theology of eschatology in Galatians to the teachings of Eschatology among Filipino Christian churches. Paul’s life, socio-political millieu, education, religion, ministry, worldview, experiences, and declaration of the gospel were traced through the culture of his day. All six selected Christian churches believe that Jesus would surely return to be with them in paradise forever. Endurance and loyalty to His teachings would encourage them to carry and fulfill their missions faithfully. A major difference in their belief on eschatology is the time of Christ’s return. However, Paul understood end times as the beginning of the new era which refers to the renewal of God's creation from the fall. The presence of Christ made the Church complete and restored from the deterioration of the corrupt system of this world. For Paul, God will set everything right, restoring and renewing creation, and this future must fulfill the promises made to Israel in particular. This study concluded that the Christian churches’ understanding of eschatology affects their lifestyle, as evident in the way they treat others and their response to the Great Commission. Indeed, it is not healthy for the Christian Churches to engage in schism, instead, they have to agree on major doctrines of the faith but allow minor differences, for instance, on the issue of eschatology.Includes bibliographical referencesMaster of Theolog

Efficacy of aqueous flower extract of African marigold (Tagetes erecta L.) against cotton aphid (Aphis gossypii Glover) and green peach aphid (Myzus persicae Sulzer) of sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.)

    Get PDF
Abstract onlyThis study was conducted from July 23 to October 15, 2019 at Central Philippine University urban garden near Gate 6, Jaro, Iloilo City. The objective of the study was to determine the efficacy of aqueous flower extracts of Tagetes erecta Linn at different concentrations against Aphis gossypii Glover and Myzus persicae Sulzer of sweet pepper. The experimental treatments were composed of the three concentrations (2%, 4% and 6%) of flower aqueous extracts (FAE) of marigold. Synthetic pesticide served as positive control while water was used as negative control. These were laid-out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Spraying of botanical treatments was done when the aphid count reached 50 to100 insects/plant. Results of the study revealed that the flower aqueous extract of marigold has a good insect repellent in the control of aphid population. Furthermore, the aphid population was also regulated by the natural enemies. The data on plant height and days to flowering did not significantly (P>0.05) differ among the treatments. There was no statistical analysis done on the number and weight of marketable fruits because of the inconsistency of the results. Some plants did not produce fruits which could be due to the combined damage of thrips and aphids. The severe damage of thrips led to a few flowers developed and even no fruit development in some plants.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Agricultur

It is composed of the following main parts: a) Dehydrating chamber where samples were subjected to dehydration, b) machine frame that served as the framework, c) heat source chamber with incandescent bulbs and auxiliary fans, d) exhaust where excess heat flows out, e) glass door for easy viewing, f) removable trays for easy access and g) temperature controller. It was completed within 4 months including the modifications, pre-testing and final evaluation. It has an overall dimension of 40 cm L x 40 cm W x 40 cm H. The commodities included were banana and mango for fruits, while chili pepper and carrots for vegetables. The machine produced an average dehydrating capacity of 81.33 g/hr, 113.67 g/hr, 44 g/hr and 53.33 g/hr for banana, mango, chili pepper and carrots, respectively. It also obtained a moisture reduction rate of 47 g/hr, 85.67 g/hr, 37.2 g/hr and 48.83 g/hr, respectively. The dehydrating efficiency of the machine ranges from 4.85% to 11.27%, which is too low according to PAES that is 75%. It is due to high amount of heat loss produced during the conduct of the study. Based on the data, the machine produced a moisture loss which ranges from 48.22 % to 75.58 %. The average score obtained from four commodities during the organoleptic test was 4.14, which indicated that the dehydrated products were acceptable. Its operating cost as computed were PHP0.67/g, PHP0.48/g, PHP1.24/g and PHP1.03/g for banana, mango, chili pepper and carrots, respectively.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Agricultural Engineerin
