Biblical allusions in Leo Tolstoy’s select short stories: A multi-critique literary reading

This dissertation theorizes that Leo Tolstoy’s five (5) select stories: Father Sergius, The Devil, Master and Man, Three Deaths, and The Three Hermits contain Biblical Allusions.
Methodology
This study is qualitative in nature and uses the formalistic and inter-textual analysis approaches in finding the biblical allusions in the select stories of Leo Tolstoy. It also employs mimetic approach in extracting the values delineated in each of the select story.
Findings
Based on the critical-analytical textual investigation, the study reveals the following findings: 1) Leo Tolstoy’s select stories: "Three Deaths," "The Three Hermits," "The Devil," "Father Sergius," and "Master and Man" were found to have Biblical allusions in terms of literary figure (character), event, images, and symbolism which are potential tools for creating a guide for values integration in the teaching of literature; 2) Collectively, the images, symbols and realities in the select stories that allude to the Bible in terms of literary figure (characters), events, and symbolism mimic life in Biblical realities and reflect life in reality; these literary events, images, symbols, and figures are found in the Old and New Testament of the Bible which are experienced by the real Biblical characters in their time; and the values delineated in the select stories are the value of self-control, godliness, contentment, faith, and sincerity and spirituality which are taught all across the Old Testament Proverbs and Poetry and the New Testament Gospels and Epistles of Apostle Paul in the Bible; and the select stories under investigation are found to have invaluable lessons in life and values that can be extracted for value integration guide for the teaching of literature using both fiction with biblical allusions and the Bible itself as the final authority and measuring standard in teaching life’s philosophies and moral values.
Recommendations
Based on the findings and conclusions of the study, the following are hereby recommended:
1. The investigation of classical literary works with Biblical allusions can sharpen and ripen one’s mind to think critically, analytically, which will be helpful in one’s assimilation of ideologies, principles, and philosophies in life;
2. Using the analysis of Biblically alluded characters, events, and symbols is one of the best tools to view life’s realities that embody the collective behavior of humankind, universal conditions, and aspirations. Thus, from the lens of Biblical allusions, the mimesis of life’s realities be utilized to enrich one’s understanding of human state and redirect one’s perspective of values; and
3. Mimetic analysis vis-a-vis Biblical allusions be used to uncover sublime life’s lessons, principles and philosophies for integration of values in teaching literature not just for entertainment but for indispensable lessons gained from real experience of Bible characters which are reflected in fictional literary characters and events of fiction stories.Includes bibliographical referencesDoctor of Philosophy in English with specialization in Literatur

Get PDFAbstract onlyMaintaining water quality is vital as it is the most important factor in determining the success and failure of an aquaculture farming. An unbalanced ecosystem can greatly increase some mortality rate of fish, mollusk, and shellfish. Manual water-quality monitoring is employed in order to assess the water quality of the pond and it includes conducting colorimetric test to make sure if the current water quality is sustainable. The test usually measures ammonia level, pH level, and dissolved oxygen level in the water. These tests are time consuming as it requires a water sample from the pond followed by series of tests and analysis. With advanced technology, a monitoring system can help regulate the data in real-time and can enable the farmers preserve the ideal habitat of the cultured species.
The data gathered through the device must alert the farmers when the data were not within tolerable range, and appropriate intervention must be done to maintain the ideal water quality parameters for the survival of the cultured species. This project study aimed to monitor the critical parameters found in the pond through the use of multiple sensors integrated in the device and give intervention when degradation of the quality occurs. The implications of the non-traditional worship style to the liturgical flow of worship as practiced by the United Church of Christ in the Philippines
Get PDFAbstract onlyThis descriptive study was conducted to describe the traditional liturgical flow of the UCCP and the non-traditional worship style that has been adopted by some UCCP local churches using content analysis as a tool. Results of the study revealed that the rise and development of the non-traditional or contemporary worship style is indicative of the worshipers’ desire to make their encounter with God meaningful. The appeal to emotions in contemporary worship style is a realization that worship is a total response to God’s initiative and is expressed through all the senses. Worship cannot and must not be categorized: traditional, Contemporary/non-traditional, blended, etc. Worship is a collective act of the people that unifies the congregation. The non-traditional style of worship is not a menace in the traditional worship life of the UCCP, if only church members are well-informed and educated of its worship style, because some parts of the non-traditional worship actually enhanced the traditional worship style. Hence, there’s nothing wrong if it influences the youth in finding their true meaning of worship, which connotes much effort of the church through her leaders in leading them right, yet, it would not hamper and degrade the church worship tradition. The rift or conflict in some UCCP churches over worship styles, are caused by preferences of features and is not a theological issue on worship. Particularly, its evidences are shown in the transformed and wholesome atmosphere now of the worship life in one of the UCCP churches in the Western Mindanao area. Feasibility study on proposed cake shop at Central Philippine University
Get PDFExecutive summaryCakes are an absolute essence of any party and are part of the memories we create. They are an indispensable item for any banquet and are part of any momentous events we celebrate. Cakes these days do not merely serve as dessert after an event nor do they act as a highlight of any party. They have become relatively common and are now, in fact, given as a gift or consumed as snacks. In a survey conducted by the Statista Research Department where the respondents were asked the frequency and their preferred time of eating cake in the United Kingdom (UK) in 2016. Result showed that majority of them specifically 51 percent, eat cake as a mid-afternoon snack. With this, we can infer that cakes are not just for parties but it can also be indulged at any time of the day even without an occasion. Because of the increasing demand for cakes, the proponents thought of venturing out on a home-based business-Maui’s Oven, to the formal market.
The proponents identified Central Philippine University as the strategic location for the cake shop because of its significantly low rental fees and a ready market for its large population. The foot traffic expected daily and during school festivities is high making it more ideal for a start-up business, particularly the Maui’s Oven. Also, an article on Retail Bakery Business Overview and Trends in 2014 indicates that six out of ten families with children consume more than the average on cakes and cupcakes. The rate is also increasing to almost three out of four people with school-aged children. Hence, the cake shop was projected to also capture this market-the students and pupils of CPU.
Demand was obtained from the survey conducted. Subsequently, the cake shop will cater 10% of the 69.35% demand or 1% of the population for custom- made cakes and cupcakes sold as snacks. High school, college and graduate school students, parents or guardians of kindergarten and elementary pupils, as well as faculty and staff of CPU, are the study population. The sample size of 372 respondents was determined using Sloven formula which considers the study population. The sample size computed was based on the 2nd Semester Enrollment for School Year 2018-2019. Accidental or Purposive sampling technique was applied to determine the respondents of the study. The data was gathered through the distribution of questionnaires answered by the respondents. Cake samples were distributed to a limited number of respondents due to cost and time constraints.
The demand for custom-made cakes was forecasted based on production capacity. Conservatism was applied to realistically estimate its sales.
Thereafter, marketing and management aspects were formulated. The cake shop will employ five people to run the business, including the owner/ manager who will supervise and manage its operations. The main selling point of Maui’s Oven is the taste of its baked products, unique and creative custom-made cakes and cupcakes sold at affordable prices.. Its logo and tagline are expected to attract its target market and catch the attention of its potential customers. It will be primarily promoted using the social media and word of mouth. The satisfaction of its clients will be an utmost priority of the cake shop. It will work on having repeat and referred customers. Fresh, delicious, visually attractive and affordable cakes are the main impression Maui’s Oven aims to be branded for.
The technical aspect was also considered. Durable baking tools and equipment were identified, along with the suppliers of raw materials. The lay-out of its commissary and kiosk will be ergonomically designed for the smooth flow of its baking and selling process.
Moreover, the financial aspect was also considered. Financial assumptions were formulated and applied in the preparation of projected financial statements, as well as the incorporation of other aspects such as management, marketing, technical, legal and taxation, as well as its safety and environmental aspect affecting its finances. The project cost amounting to Php 921,451.32, which includes renovation costs, cost of assets acquired essential to the venture’s operation, rental fees, insurances, taxes and licenses, as well as the working capital requirement for the first month of operation, was determined.
It will be taken from the owner’s personal savings. Maui’s Oven will be solely owned and operated by the proprietor. Therefore, the income tax levied will be computed using the graduated tax table for individuals under the TRAIN law. The financial statements projected in this study are monthly for the first year and annually for the five years of operations are statement of financial position, performance, cash flow statements, statement of changes in equity and notes to financial statements. The cake shop was projected to earn a net income of Php 225,382.47 on its first year of operations, and will have positive income from its second year of operations onwards. The cake shop’s net income from second to fifth year of operations is projected to be Php 328,268.01,197,747.40, 269,881.55, and 336,827.64, respectively.
Cash maintained is Php 250,000 annually and any excess will be withdrawn by the owner. Financial ratios were also computed to analyze the financial statements projected. This will provide a more explicit viewpoint as to how the cake shop will be doing in terms of its liquidity and profitability.
The discounted payback period is used to determine the profitability of a project. It gives the number of years an initial investment to break even. The cake shop’s discounted period computed using 9% discounted rate was 3.22 or more than three years which is a reasonable time for an investment to break even, hence it is acceptable. As a rule, positive net present value, wherein its cash inflow is higher than its initial cost of investment, means that a project can be accepted. The cake shop’s net present value was projected to be Php 477,704.56, which means it is feasible. In relation to NPV, a project with a profitability index of more than one is acceptable. Since Maui’s Oven has a 1.52 profitability index, it means that it can be pursued. Its IRR is 26.81% which is more than its discount rate of 9%, thus making the project acceptable. The positive results of the financial ratios computed show that the cake shop is feasible.
Its safety and environmental and socio-economic aspect were also considered so as to determine its impact to the society and economy. Finally, its sensitivity towards various variables was analyzed to assess its flexibility to certain changes.
After considering and assessing all aspects such as market, marketing, management, technical, financial, legal and taxation, safety and environmental, socio-economic and sensitivity analysis, it can be concluded that the establishment of the cake shop at the Student Service Enterprise in Central Philippine University is feasible. Hence, it is recommended that the cake shop be opened and pursued as long as means to cut cost, improve products are put in place, and aggressive marketing will be implemented to be more competitive for the said business establishment to be sustainable and progressive.Includes bibliographical referencesMaster in Business Administratio
Growth and yield of turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) as affected by sizes of pots and animal manures
Get PDFAbstract onlyThis study was conducted at the College of Agriculture, Resources, and Environmental Sciences experimental garden, Central Philippine University, Jaro, Iloilo City from July 12 to December 27, 2019. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of sizes of pot and of different animal manures on the growth and yield of turmeric. The experimental treatments were composed of manures such as cow manure, goat manure and broiler chicken dung, and different sizes of pots namely: 12 x12 cm, 14 x14 cm and 16x16 cm, positive and negative control. These were laid out in a factorial randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Number of days to emergence of plantlets was not significantly (P>0.05) affected by pot sizes and kinds of manure. On the other hand, turmeric planted in 16 x 16 inch-pots and those fertilized with goat manure were significantly (P<0.01) higher, had more plantlets that emerged, heaviest rhizome clumps, yield and return on investment (ROI) compared to plants on the other treatments. In addition, the application of chicken manure also has significantly higher (P<0.01) increased on the plant height and number of plantlets that emerged which is comparable to goat manure, while those fertilized with cow manure also has the significantly (P<0.05) highest number rhizome clumps produced.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Agricultur
A critical discourse analysis of online local news articles on COVID-19
Get PDFJournal articleThis study used Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to examine online local news articles on COVID-19. Specifically, this study discussed the linguistic features used in news headlines with respect to omission of subjects and auxiliaries, nominalizations, passivization, formation of word order, use of short words, and widespread use of puns and wordplay. This investigation revealed new terminologies as well as the ideologies present in the news articles. The COVID-19 news articles were selected from a major local online news portal and put through a rigorous review process (CDA). The findings revealed that linguistic features such as the omission of subjects and auxiliary verbs, word order formation, the use of short words, and puns and wordplay contribute to more engaging and concise new headlines. While the lack of Nominalization and Passivization characteristics is intended to lead the subject to more direct and objective treatment. The terms "Community Lockdowns," "RT-PCR test," "LSIs," and "Quarantine" were commonly used to describe the COVID-19 pandemic. The news articles revealed that the government maintains the ideologies of both power and security. Power was maintained with the use of force and security through confidentiality. Overall, the authors used precise language to convey their personal perspectives on the subject. It is suggested that a more in-depth discussion of ideologies be conducted from a global perspective
Efficacy of various gel formulations from pomelo (Citrus maxima) peel extract as mosquito repellent in New Zealand albino rabbits
Get PDFAbstract onlyMost citrus plants have repellent activity for mosquitoes that can help the community decrease dengue. The limonene which was the active constituent was extracted from the pomelo peel and was proved useful in developing mosquito repellent. Mosquito repellent in various formulations are superior for the prevention of mosquito-borne disease as well as uncomfortable mosquito bite. Determining the effectiveness of pomelo peel extract as mosquito repellent was the specific goal of this study. Specifically, it intends to obtain essential oil and formulates it into gel formulation. The rabbit with four quadrants at their back that was shaved was used by the researchers. Labelled A, B, C, and D according to the formulation assigned to know the repellency effect of the gel formulation, the mosquitoes are released freely in the cage for them to fly, and the results have shown that there are no landing or bites on the quadrant A and D which was the gel formulation. The pomelo peel in a recent study was found useful and effective as a natural alternative for mosquito repellent. The result of this study would provide information regarding pomelo peel extract as a mosquito repellent.
