Undervalued, understaffed, underdeveloped, and underutilized? The status of public libraries in the eleven municipalities of rural Iloilo Province, Philippines
No full textJournal articleLibraries, as service-oriented organizations, are being guided on every aspect of their operation by local and international standards. In the Philippines, public libraries are expected to adhere to the stipulations of the Philippine Standards for Public Libraries. This study was conducted to assess the adherence of the 11 municipal libraries in Iloilo Province to the following areas of the Standards: library administration, collection management, services and utilization, physical facilities, financial resources, and linkages, networking and collaboration. Findings revealed that most libraries were non-compliant with almost all aspects of the Standards. Specifically, the majority lacked support from their local government units and were managed by non-professional librarians with inadequate knowledge and skills in successfully managing a library. Additionally, most libraries have a low budget to purchase updated resources of various types and formats and appropriate facilities and equipment. Furthermore, almost all libraries lacked networks and linkages, and collaborative activities that could have helped librarians enhance their skills, improve library resources and services, and increase their visibility and value to the stakeholders. Consequently, most municipal libraries could not fulfill the community's information needs; therefore, they remained undervalued and underutilized
A comparative study on the performance of commercial and shredded expanded polystyrene roughing filter as pretreatment for the improvement of the physical properties of water from Tigum River, San Isidro, Jaro, Iloilo City
Get PDFAbstract onlyDomestic-scale water filters often require relatively low turbid water which is often not available in times of natural calamities, requiring the use of water pretreatment systems for turbidity reduction in the available water. Studies on expanded polystyrene (EPS) show its viability as a filter media in roughing filters used as water pretreatment. This study was conducted to design and construct a vertical upflow roughing filter as pretreatment using EPS as the filter media and to evaluate and compare the performance of two EPS setup: one composed of commercial EPS beads with diameter size of 3-5mm and the other is composed of shredded EPS beads with the same diameter size. Water analysis of the raw and product water was conducted to assess the performance of the EPS beads, to evaluate the physical parameters of turbidity, total suspended solids (TSS) and color, to calculate the turbidity reduction efficiency (TRE) and TSSRE, and to compare the performance of the two setups using statistical analysis. The TRE for both setups averaged more than 90% while the TSSRE averaged only about 15%. Statistical analyses show no significant difference for TRE, TSSRE, as well as color, for both setups. Shredded EPS was found to be as efficient as commercial EPS in turbidity reduction, while both are inefficient in TSS reduction. The role of Moringa oleifera in agro-ecosystems: A review
No full textConference paperMoringa has been grown and cultivated in various agro-ecosystems ranging from small-scale backyard home gardens to large scale commercial production in tropical and sub-tropical agro-climatic ecosystems. It is grown in monoculture, mixed cropping such as intercropping, hedgerow intercropping or alley cropping system. In monoculture system, moringa is grown either for leaf production or seed production. High density monoculture planting of moringa is a cropping system mainly for maximum leaf biomass production. In mixed cropping systems, moringa is intercropped with high value crops such as vegetables and herbs. As a component of diverse agro-ecosystems moringa play a significant role including soil erosion control in sloping agricultural landscapes and carbon sequestration minimizing the consequences of climate change and global warming. In agroforestry systems, moringa is an important crop component which contributes to increasing soil fertility, soil moisture conservation and increased agro-economic returns. Although it is not a preferred tree species by agroforesters, it plays an important role in deforestation because of its ability to thrive in wastelands and provide rapid shade cover a better choice for many tree-planting projects. It is also a good nurse crop for slower-growing species that eventually will dominate the site. Performance assessment task: A point of reference for science teachers this pandemic and beyond
Get PDFJournal articleThe pursuit for quality education, including that in the basic education levels, for sustainable development is clearly described in the Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by the UN. Accordingly, to equip students, with knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values they'll need to face the difficulties along with sustainable development, there is a need to up-date some processes currently utilized in science teaching and learning. For this reason, alternative activities and assessment methods, like the use of performance task assessment is needed to improve both the quality of teaching and to provide a meaningful learning experience to students. The purpose of this study was to provide relevant information from extant literature and a sample performance task assessment to encourage Science teachers to utilize these information in their classes. To achieve this purpose, significant information about performance task assessment and an original performance task assessment were presented. The use of performance assessment task is one alternative method to develop critical thinking skills, and to provide an education that is truly relevant to every student in the light of today’s challenges, like the pandemic. It could provide authentic and meaningful learning experience to students, and is very relevant in the context of coping with the challenges the science teachers have been facing. With the many pieces of evidence on its effectiveness and positive learning experience by students provided by literature, it is certain that the use of performance assessment task in Science classes cannot be overemphasized
Antihyperglycemic and cholesterol-lowering potential of dietary fibre from lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus Stapf.)
No full textJournal articleBACKGROUND: The major component of lemongrass by weight is dietary fibre (DF), but no literature has been reported on its DF components and fermentation products when ingested.
OBJECTIVE: This study analysed DF components of lemongrass, investigated the potential of the major product from total DF (TDF) fermentation to inhibit α-amylase and HMG-CoA reductase, key enzymes of diabetes mellitus and hypercholesterolemia, respectively, and determined the serum glucose- and cholesterol-lowering potential of TDF in an animal model.
METHODS: Lemongrass DF components were analysed, TDF was fermented in vitro; the major fermentation product was isolated for enzyme inhibitory assays; and postprandial blood glucose- and cholesterol-lowering potential of TDF was determined in Sprague-Dawley rats.
RESULTS: TDF in lemongrass was 65.7 g/100g and soluble DF, 2.8 g/100 g. Significant amount of propionate (10.9 mM/g TDF) was produced after TDF fermentation; propionate inhibited 20.4% α-amylase activity, and 13.1 % HMG-CoA reductase activity in vitro. TDF further exhibited antihyperglycemic and cholesterol-lowering potential in an animal model.
CONCLUSIONS: DF from lemongrass was shown to reduce hyperglycemia and hypercholesterolemia in an animal model, through mild inhibition of α-amylase and HMG-CoA reductase. Thus, lemongrass DF may have a significant role in mitigating the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus and hypercholesterolemia.Philippine Council for Health, Research and Development – Department of Science and Technology (PCHRD- DOST
Development of an online interactive module for Grade VIII students' speaking skills
Get PDFAbstract onlyThis developmental research created an online interactive English module for Grade 8 students at a private high school in Guimaras. Specifically, this study utilized Input- Output (IPO) Model to identify the inputs, outputs, and processing tasks needed to transform inputs into outputs. For the inputs of the module, an interview and a performance task were given to the 23 Grade 8 students to evaluate their speaking abilities in terms of fluency, vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. This was essentially the result of the creation and testing of a module to assist Grade 8 students in improving their speaking skills. The results show that the respondents had good or satisfactory in fluency, vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation skills, but none of them excelled in pausing and pacing, clarity, or emotion. According to the respondents' overall speaking abilities, pronunciation and vocabulary are strengths, while fluency and grammar are weaknesses. Furthermore, they were unable to communicate due to a fear of making grammatical mistakes. The developed module includes Grade Eight lessons from MELCS and activities that can enhance the speaking skills of Grade Eight students. Development of a module in teaching beginning readers with Dyslexia
Get PDFAbstract onlyThe primary purpose of this study was to develop a module in teaching beginning readers with dyslexia ages 7-12 years old and in the grade 1-6 level. To establish an empirical basis in creating this module, the Input-process-output (IPO) model was applied. The DepEd curriculum guide was the reference in identifying the specific learning competencies in reading. Reading textbooks, existing modules, and printed or online copy approved by the Department of Education was also used as additional references in creating this teaching module. A key information Interview (KII) through Zoom was conducted to determine the context, experiences, and feedback of teachers in terms of teaching reading specifically to children with reading difficulty or dyslexia. Results of the KII was the basis in determining the content and design of the module. The participants of the KII were Grade 1 to 6 special and regular teachers coming from both public and private schools in the Western part of Iloilo and Guimaras. Data gathered from the KII were transcribed and analyzed through thematic analysis which generated four final themes. These themes were: (1) lessons and materials in phonetics, (2) engagement and interactive activities, (3) scaffolding and task analysis, and (4) phonetics difficulty.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Special Needs Educatio

Second, by helping a certain municipality’s brand value, image, and identity. Facilities are essential in supporting the tourism industry of a locality. Pandan is a major tourist destination for its natural wonders that cater to those who love nature and outdoor activities. Pandan is known for its famous Malumpati Cold Spring, Bugang River and white-sand beaches. Bariw leaves are abundant in Pandan that is use to make handicrafts like mats, trays, bags and other novelty products. The proposed tourism building has a total floor area of 120 square meters (15m x 8 m) situated inside the Pandan Public Terminal. The ground floor will function as the reception area where tourist packages and promotion of tourist spots can be found. Also food products and handicrafts can be found in the ground floor. Second floor will function as the multi-purpose room where trainings and seminars can be held and office for the Department of Tourism of
Pandan. It was designed with large glass windows to allow maximum use of natural light. The plans were then finalized after ensuring that the design has conformed to the standards of NSCP 2015. The total estimated project cost is at about
Php 5,282,630.00 through the help of the local government along with the assistance of Department of Tourism as source of funds. The estimated project duration is 133 calendar days or 4 months and 13 days.

Compliance of city and provincial libraries in Western Visayas with the minimum standard for public libraries in the Philippines
Get PDFAbstract onlyLibrary standards were established to guide libraries in advancing their services and further satisfy their clients' information needs. A qualitative-quantitative research was conducted to assess the compliance of the three city and two provincial libraries in Western Visayas to the Standard of Philippine Public Libraries (SPPL) in terms of library administration, collection management, physical facilities, library services, financial resources, and collaboration, networking and linkages for the fiscal year 2019. Results of the study revealed that most of the city and provincial libraries in the region were compliant with most of the areas of the standard except physical facilities and financial resources. The facilities of most libraries were inadequate to support the needs of the clients and the library personnel. Likewise, most of the libraries' budgetary allocations were very low to support the upgrade of the library programs, especially on the upgrading of library facilities and the purchasing of current resources in various formats. On the other hand, although all of the libraries do not have a library website, it was found that Facebook has helped them enhance their linkages, networking, and collaboration.Includes bibliographical referencesMaster in Library and Information Scienc
