    No full text
Conference paperA study was conducted to determine and compare the growth characteristics and nutritional quality of M. oleifera and M. peregrina. Three moringa cultivars consisting of two M. oleifera cultivars (‘PKM-1’ and ‘Local’) and one M. peregrina cultivar were evaluated in pot experiments using a randomized complete block design with four replications. Pruning and sampling of leaves for biomass yield and nutritional quality analysis were performed when plants attained a height of 1 m. Young and fully expanded green leaves were sampled for nutritional analysis and biochemical components. Results showed that plant height and number of leaves differed significantly between the three cultivars. ‘PKM-1’ and the ‘Local’ cultivar were taller than M. peregrina, whereas, ‘PKM-1’ and M. peregrina produced a higher number of leaves than the ‘Local’ cultivar. There were no significant differences in the number of side branches among cultivars. Although there were no significant differences in leaf fresh weight among cultivars, M. peregrina and ‘PKM-1’ had a tendency of higher leaf fresh weight than the ‘Local’ cultivar. Both cultivars had significantly higher dry leaf biomass than the ‘Local’ cultivar. Significant differences in calcium, iron and anti-oxidant activity were found between the three cultivars. ‘PKM-1’ contained higher calcium than M. peregrina and the ‘Local’ cultivar. ‘PKM-1’ also contained higher iron than M. peregrina, but not significant compared to the ‘Local’ cultivar. Both ‘PKM-1’ and M. peregrina had significantly higher anti-oxidant activity than the ‘Local’ cultivar. Significant differences were also observed in nitrogen free extract, crude protein and crude fat. Nitrogen free extract content was higher in M. peregrina than in ‘PKM-1’ and ‘Local’ cultivar. The ‘Local’ cultivar contained higher crude fat than ‘PKM-1’ and M. peregrina. This study indicated that moringa cultivars differ in growth characteristics, selected nutritional qualities and biochemical components. Further studies should investigate and determine other nutritional qualities that are not covered including vitamins, amino acids and important anti-oxidants.North Florida Research and Education Center, Quincy, Florida, US

Abstract onlyThis study used exegetical method to analyze the use of tsitsit in prayer in Numbers 15:37-41, its origin, function, and meaning. Books, dictionaries, encyclopedias, and other on-line materials were used as relevant references. Results of the study revealed that the commandment of wearing the tsitsit was given by God through Moses while the Israelites were still in the wilderness, after they had gone out from Egypt and before they entered the Promised Land. This commandment was ordained for all generations. A blue thread or cord was specified to be placed on the borders or comers of their garments. The tsitsit (tassels or fringes) serves as a visual reminder to obey the commandments of the Lord. The color tekhelet (blue) was expensive because it came from a rare sea snail that must be harvested by hand and many snails were needed to produce a single drop of dye. In the course of time, garment fashion has changed and the Israelites developed a particular garment called tallit (prayer shawl) on which the tsitsit could be attached. is primarily used in their daily prayers, worship, and other religious ceremonies, and they wear a small tallit for their ordinary daily living. This garment never parts from the wearers until death that it is worn even during burial. Up to this day, Israelites wear the tsitsit attached to the tallit.Includes bibliographical referencesMaster of Divinit

Journal articleA Husserlian phenomenological study was conducted in five public Senior High Schools in Maasin, Iloilo to describe the experiences of teachers who were teaching Qualitative Research but did not receive adequate training in the said field for the purpose of gaining deeper insights on their experience and how the prevailing issues can be addressed. Five emerging themes were identified namely, 1) unproductive teaching, 2) difficulties in teaching, 3) insufficient infrastructure and logistical support to the teachers, 4) mental and emotional disturbances among teachers and 5) coping with technical inadequacy by these teachers. The participants perceived that their ability to teach qualitative research was unproductive due to excessive time in teaching preparations and their incompetence. Some attributed the difficulties to their students’ poor academic preparations that includes poor reading abilities and writing skills. All of them felt that there was insufficient logistical and infrastructure support especially limited internet connectivity and inadequate materials. All participants experienced mental and emotional disturbances such as helplessness, guilt and low self-esteem. The participants adopted various coping mechanisms for their inadequacies. This research presents important implications for the Department of Education, academe and teaching practitioners. It is highly recommended that DepEd should be responsible for the needed training of their teachers in the different methods under qualitative research and provide substantial incentives to motivate teachers to conduct research. Further, a simple manual on the basic knowledge on how to process interviews based on the rigors of the four qualitative methods should also be developed.University Research Cente

Abstract onlyThis study used Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to examine online local news articles on COVID-19. Specifically, this study discussed the linguistic features used in news headlines with respect to omission of subjects and auxiliaries, nominalizations, passivization, formation of word order, use of short words, and widespread use of puns and wordplay. This investigation revealed new terminologies as well as the ideologies present in the news articles. The COVID-19 news articles were selected from a major local online news portal and put through a rigorous review process (CDA). The findings revealed that linguistic features such as the omission of subjects and auxiliary verbs, word order formation, the use of short words, and puns and wordplay contribute to more engaging and concise new headlines. While the lack of Nominalization and Passivization characteristics is intended to lead the subject to more direct and objective treatment. The terms "Community Lockdowns," "RT-PCR test," "LSIs," and "Quarantine" were commonly used to describe the COVID-19 pandemic. The news articles revealed that the government maintains the ideologies of both power and security. Power was maintained with the use of force and security through confidentiality. Overall, the authors used precise language to convey their personal perspectives on the subject. It is suggested that a more in-depth discussion of ideologies be conducted from a global perspective.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Secondary Education major in Englis

Abstract onlyLibraries, as service-oriented organizations, are being guided on every aspect of their operation by local and international standards. In the Philippines, public libraries are expected to adhere to the stipulations of the Philippine Standards for Public Libraries. This descriptive study was conducted, specifically, to assess the 11 municipal libraries in Iloilo Province in the areas of library administration, collection management, services and utilization, physical facilities, financial resources and linkages, networking and collaboration. Findings of the study revealed that almost all of the libraries were non-compliant to practically all aspects of the areas of the Standards. Specifically, most of the municipal libraries lacked support from their local government units. Hence mostly were managed by non-professional librarians who lacked knowledge and skills in successfully managing a library. Likewise, most libraries did not have enough budget to purchase updated resources of various types and formats and appropriate facilities and equipment. Thus, they remained underutilized and undervalued. Furthermore, almost all of the libraries lacked networks and linkages and collaborative activities that could have helped librarians enhance their skills and improve library resources and services, and increase their visibility and value to their stakeholders. Based on the study's findings, a municipal library development plan is recommended to guide the library manager and the LGU in developing their library.Includes bibliographical referencesMaster in Library and Information Scienc

Abstract onlyNurses’ involvement in early recognition through their exceptional skills in assessment and having constant patient interaction, as well as, management of sepsis using sepsis bundles of care are crucial to saving lives. It is very critical to understand first the cognizance on Sepsis bundles of care and compliance of healthcare providers with the standard care and protocols in preventing sepsis. This study determined the relationship between ICU nurses’ cognizance, compliance to sepsis bundles of care and the occurrence of sepsis in selected hospitals in Iloilo city and Antique. This study utilizes a descriptive-correlation research design. There are only 40 ICU nurses participated in the survey. Descriptive statistics using percentage and frequency and Inferential statistics using Spearman’s Rho correlation were utilized to analyze the data. The result showed that most ICU nurses are with low cognizance and no compliance regarding sepsis bundles of care and there is an occurrence of sepsis among ICU's. There is negligible relationship between cognizance and compliance, which means that they no correlation. The relationship between cognizance on sepsis bundles of care and occurrence of sepsis in ICU has negligible correlation. This means that knowledge and understanding of nurses does not affect the occurrence of sepsis in the ICU. Also, relationship between compliance of ICU nurses and occurrence of sepsis are evaluated and resulted in low relationship among variables. Clinically speaking, compliance of ICU nurses with sepsis bundles of care does not affect the occurrence of sepsis greatly. Furthermore, there is a negative effect to the cognizance and to the occurrence of sepsis if a nurse compliant. Clinically, if a nurse is compliant, and has a high level of cognizance, it will result to a low probability of occurrence of sepsis. Therefore it is recommended that Nursing Service Office Personnel, Supervisors and In service Educators are implement education, information, training programs among nurses, specifically ICU nurses. Programs may include basic concepts about sepsis, assessment findings, diagnostic features and parameters and importance of compliance to sepsis bundles of care In addition, to the Department of Health Personnel, Hospital Administrators and Quality Manager shall revisit their hospital policies and guidelines about sepsis and related care. Care should be incorporated in the routine procedures within the hospital especially in ICU and ER upon consultation with the different stakeholders such as doctors, nurses, laboratories and pharmacies. Also, proper training and information dissemination need to be prioritized to align all practices within the institution based on the recent Surviving Sepsis Campaign guidelines in the management of Sepsis. Lastly, for future researchers, to further study, specifically the role of cognizance and compliance to the severity indicators of patient in the ICU in terms of the mortality rate and likewise to conduct a qualitative study focusing on the experiences of nurses taking care of patients with septic shock and narrative of patients who had developed sepsis during the course of hospital stay.Master of Arts in Nursin

Moringa research and development project at Central Philippine University: Progress, challenges and opportunities

    No full text
Conference paperMoringa is a common backyard tree crop in the Philippines and is grown by many home owners as a source of green leafy vegetable. Although moringa is a popular crop, little research studies have been conducted in central Philippines. The College of Agriculture, Resources and Environmental Sciences at Central Philippine University initiated a research project in 2009 to: 1) identify and evaluate promising cultivars of moringa adapted to the growing conditions of Western Visayas and 2) develop improved crop management practices for increasing yield and production. Germplasm collection and evaluation identified promising cultivars with desirable horticultural characteristics from India, Laos, Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand and USA. From this field evaluation one promising cultivar, 'PKM-1' from India, was grown at four plant densities to determine leaf biomass production as influenced by plant density and harvest frequency. Maximum plant density of 40,000 plants ha-1 and harvest frequency of 8 week intervals produced a high leaf biomass yield. A separate study was conducted to determine and compare the nutritional quality of Moringa oleifera and Moringa peregrina. Significant differences in calcium, iron and anti-oxidant activity were found between the species. Moringa oleifera 'PKM-1' contained higher calcium and iron than M. peregrina. Training workshops and seminars were conducted to transfer the technology and educate farmers on the multiple uses and benefits of moringa. The university has established linkages with the World Vegetable Center (Taiwan), Department of Agriculture and local NGOs in promoting moringa as a high-value crop. The university has proposed to organize a regional R&D center for moringa to address the challenges and opportunities facing moringa growers in areas of improved cultivars, seed production and propagation, crop management practices, post-harvest processing and quality, marketing and value chain enhancement

Factors associated with COVID 19 vaccine acceptance among nurses in Iloilo City

    Get PDF
Abstract onlyImmunity is seen as a long-term strategy to address the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic globally. With the varied types of vaccine available, this study was conducted to determine the acceptance of COVID-19 vaccine among nurses in Iloilo City. It also determined the correlation between the characteristics (age, sex, presence of dependent), knowledge about vaccine, level of confidence and level of susceptibility to the acceptance of the vaccine. This descriptive-relational study, conducted in June-July 2021, used the one-shot survey design. The respondents were staff nurses in a private secondary hospital in Iloilo (n = 92). The level of susceptibility was determined using an adopted questionnaire from WHO. The level of knowledge and confidence were determined using a researcher-developed questionnaire. The respondents were asked whether they will get the COVID-19 vaccine available to them. Gamma and Phi were used to test for relationship at 0.05 level of significance. The study was approved by the CPU Research Ethics Committee. Majority of the nurses are middle-aged (30-49), female, and live with their dependents. Most score above 60% on their knowledge about COVID-19 vaccines. About two-fifths have high-risk if susceptibility to COVID. Although majority are highly confident about the COVID-19 vaccine, about 40% have low confidence about it. Majority would accept the vaccine (83%) while 15% plan to delay it and 2% claims to refuse the vaccine. The characteristics, knowledge, confidence, and susceptibility had no influence on the vaccine acceptance. As frontline workers, nurses’ safety should be of prime concern. Healthcare leaders must consider counselling nurses who are hesitant to vaccination. Future researchers can explore other factors associated with hesitancy. Although nurses are working in the frontline, there are nurses who are still doubtful of undergoing vaccination. Programs must be designed by the hospital administration to investigate the cause and ensure compliance.Includes bibliographical referencesMaster of Arts in Nursin
