    Get PDF
Abstract onlyCalamansi fruits are commonly used in the Philippines and the peels are discarded as wastes. Epicarpium of calamansi peels were selected for analysis in this study in order to determine their potential in vitro inhibition of α-amylase and α-glucosidase, enzyme markers of diabetes mellitus. The potential inhibition of the six fractions against α-amylase ranged from 6.5% to 34.2%, with the acetone-methanol (4:1) fraction having the highest percentage inhibitory activity of 34.2% ± 3.3. However, only two fractions showed inhibition against α-glucosidase with acetone-methanol (4:1) extract having the higher percentage inhibitory activity of 12.3% ± 1.7. Thus, epicarpium from calamansi peels have moderate to low inhibitory activity against α-amylase and α-glucosidase, respectively. Results of this study provide useful information for development of calamansi peels into nutraceuticals that could help with diabetes management.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Chemistr

Abstract onlyThis study was conducted to assess the performance of the Faculty and Employees Multi-purpose Cooperative. Descriptive study with documental review and analysis was conducted and one-shot survey was applied to all cooperative members as of 2018 using total enumeration sampling. A self-administered questionnaire served as the tool to determine the profile of respondents, services provided by the cooperative and frequency rate of availment by members, overall utilization of loan proceeds by the members and benefits provided by the cooperative to its members. On the other hand, financial statements of the cooperative for the period 2014 to 2018 were used to analyze its financial performance. Results of the survey showed that majority of the respondents were 61 years old and above, male, married, permanent employees and regular members of the cooperative. Out of the listed loan services of the cooperative, livelihood and emergency loans were frequently availed by members. Frequency of loan availment is usually high except during those years where other government-owned and controlled agencies penetrated the interest of the cooperative members. Proceeds from loans were utilized by most members for a different purpose based on the nature of the loan. This condition signifies high demand for the cooperative lending services. High demand for lending services has a significant role in improving the profitability of the cooperative, hence the way for a cooperative to stay solvent. Profitability and solvency, however, were not the only bases for an excellent cooperative performance as set by the Cooperative Development Authority. It was determined through stability and liquidity ratios that the cooperative has considerably poor asset utilization and credit collection, which hinders profitability maximization. Overall, a continuous learning program through seminars and trainings pertaining to basic financial cooperative literacy could be of great help to educate all cooperative stakeholders in order to work together in protecting the X cooperative interests. This in turn will enable the cooperative to serve its members better and improve its operation in helping the members through a diversified service, other than lending.Includes bibliographical referencesMaster in Business Administratio

Abstract onlyThis study was conducted to design and construct an Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Fixed-Film Digester and to determine the effectiveness of digesting sugar mill effluents by anaerobic digestion. The results were compared to the current Ponding process of POME in terms of percent COD removal, COD retained, and COD removed in each HRT cycle (1.5 days), and to determine the presence of methane. The UASFF digester was designed to utilize the sugar mill effluent by maintaining a pH level of 6.8, the Hydraulic Retention Time (HRT) at 36 hours or 1.5 days, and a flow rate of 2.2 mL/min for optimal digestion process throughout the study. Results showed that the digester was able to purify at least 4L of effluent at the HRT of 36 hours. At HRT 7, the percent COD removal reached the highest of around 81.87%. As for the lowest, the 1st HRT cycle excluding the 0th HRT cycle has a value of 58.27%. The effect was minimal despite the increasing COD removal and stabilizing at around 80%. The presence of methane was determined to be present with the use of a gas tester.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Chemical Engineerin

Grey literature usage among Filipino aquaculture researchers: A bibliometric analysis of research from 2009 to 2018

    No full text
Extended abstract only.Aquaculture is one of the fastest growing food production industries globally (Natale et al., 2011), and it is expected to exceed the production of other animal production industries such as beef, pork, or poultry in the next decade (OECD and FAO, 2012). In the Philippines, aquaculture contributes significantly to food security, employment for the poor, women, youth, and foreign exchange earnings (FAO, 2019; Sekhar and Ortiz, 2006). The Philippines is the 11th top aquaculture producing country in the world; it ranked third, fifth, and ninth in seaweeds, finfish, and marine crustacean productions, respectively (FAO, 2018). However, unsustainable aquaculture practices in the country “contributed to nutrient loading, threatening environmental harm” (FAO, 2018). The majority of countries in the world, including the Philippines, are experiencing environmental problems due to unsustainable aquaculture practices. Thus, to address these problems and further develop aquaculture, research was actively done by the government, academic, and research institutions. According to Superio et al. (2019) research plays a major role in development, and commonly, the results were published for public consumption. However, some fisheries and aquaculture researches were unpublished and of limited distribution because a high proportion of fisheries information was published as grey literature (Parker et al., 2010). Notably, FAO (2009) found that fisheries information in developing countries was published in grey literature due to the stringent criteria of the editorial boards of Western peer-reviewed journals, while in Africa, an estimated 70 percent of fisheries information is published as grey literature

Abstract onlyThe Frame-Based Expert Decision Support System for Medical Diagnosis is a web based application designed for the use of a physician in providing a diagnosis to patients who undergoes medical consultation. It is a Decision Support System using the frame based expert system algorithm that assesses the possible diseases that a patient may have basing on the symptoms and patient information provided into the system. The system includes the recording of information, storing of health records, diagnosing of patients, issuance of electronic prescriptions and generating of statistical reports. The methodology used in the system is the extreme programming as the development process is continuous as the phases allows the system to be defined and modified as errors are encountered during the testing phase. The system is then released upon completion of the developed study and all modules tested has passed. Unit testing was used in testing the system developed as this allowed the each form of the modules to be tested thoroughly to accomplish the objective set. As a result, the web based application was able to contribute in the diagnosis of the physician. With the knowledge base updated with the diseases and its relevant information, Physicians and patients provided a feedback that showed that the application was able to provide an accurate diagnosis based on the patient information that was provided to be able to assist the physician to arrive to a final diagnosis.Includes bibliographical referencesMaster of Science in Computer Scienc

Modular learning in English: A narrative inquiry of High School English teachers' experiences

    No full text
Abstract onlyThis narrative inquiry aimed to gain a more in-depth understanding of teachers’ experiences and experiential knowledge on the implementation of modular learning in the National High School from Southern Iloilo. To make this possible, an in-depth interview was made among eight (8) English teachers in which their answers were transcribed, analysed and linked to Dewey’s Theory of Experience. There were three (3) themes generated about teachers’ perception in modular learning: (1) Personal knowledge and evaluation of the task, (2) Perceptions toward modular learning compared to traditional face-to-face learning, (3) Comparison of preparation of modules versus lesson plan under the traditional face-to-face learning. Three (3) themes were generated about the teachers’ challenges in the preparation and distribution of modules: (1) Teachers’ attitudes toward the task, (2) Evaluation of time during the experience, (3) Personal and professional sacrifices. There were also three (3) themes generated about teachers’ changed perceptions after the experience: (1) Evaluation or support received by the government, (2) Observed changes in perception towards teaching English, (3) Adjustment after the pandemic. The results of the study implied positive attitudes of the participants despite the challenges they had encountered in the preparation and distribution of the modules to students. The findings indicated that the primary challenges of teachers were reproduction, distribution, and retrieval of the modules. The study revealed that in this modality, teachers have no control in the subject matter. Due to no control, they no longer find teaching English challenging.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Secondary Education Major in Englis

Abstract onlyThe primary purpose of this study was to develop modules in Chemical Bonding for Grade 9 students. In order to establish an empirical basis in creating the modules, Input-Process- Output (IPO) model was utilized by the researchers and mixed-methods was used in the analysis of data. A validated and reliability-tested researcher-made instrument was used to determine the learning competencies of 210 students in chemical bonding. A focus group discussion through video conference was held to determine the module making strategies of teachers. The data gathered were analyzed using frequency, mean, and percentage for descriptive analysis and thematic analysis for focus group discussion. The results of the assessment test showed that majority of the students were not able to correctly answer the questions included in the learning competencies of chemical bonding. The results of the focus group discussion revealed that incorporation of overview and review of concepts and integration of contextualized activities should be part of the teaching strategies. Moreover, assistance of technology and active involvement of students through interactive activities should be considered as instructional tools. The use of formative assessment with variety of assessment tools and the consistency of assessment strategies to the set learning outcomes must also be realized. The newly developed module was evaluated by experts excellent in terms of the objectives of the module, content of the module, format and language of the module, presentation of the module, and the usefulness of the module. It showed potential as an effective learning material.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Secondary Education major in Scienc
