    Factors associated with the compliance to ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 (RA 9003) of inland resort establishments in the Province of Iloilo: Inputs to policy enhancement

    Abstract onlyThis is a correlational study that determined the factors associated with the compliance to the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 200 (RA 9003) of the inland resort establishments in the province of Iloilo. The data was collected using survey questionnaire from 118 managers and employees in all 23 inland resorts operating in the province. Findings show that the inland resorts in the province of Iloilo are mostly micro enterprises with 1 to 9 employees and have in in business for an average of 2 years. Most of them are without DOT accreditation. Those with DOT accreditation, mostly are Class AA accreditation and few have Class AAA and have the availability of resources for solid waste management as mandated by local law. The managers and employees are fully are of RA 9003, almost always participate in public programs and activities related to the implementation of RA 9003. They said RA 9003 is totally enforced in their workplace and have always complied with RA 9003. Among the four predictors - level of awareness of RA 9003, extent of public participation, availability of resources, extent of enforcement of RA 9003, it is only the availability of resources found to be statistically significantly associated with inland resort extent of compliance to RA 9003, though it is weak (R = 0.281, p-value = 0.030).     Abstract onlyThe keeping of the Sabbath is an essential component of the Decalogue. The Sabbath is God’s institution which he established in creation. It was formally given to the Israelites in the wilderness (Ex. 16:29) and was practiced by Jesus (Lk. 4:16) and his apostles including Paul (Acts 17:2). It may be hard to imagine a fulfilling human existence where murder, stealing and adultery are norms. So, if the compromise of God’s commandments would result to detrimental consequences, can there be a significant danger to man if God’s mandate to keep His Sabbath be compromised? The researcher desires to know the fundamental meaning of the keeping of the Sabbath and its implications to the contemporary society. The exegetical exposition of Hebrews 4:1-11 reveals that the Sabbath rest is a cessation from labor on the seventh day. It speaks of the Sabbath of the Decalogue but does not necessarily imply the adherence to the rabbinic rituals and ceremonies. A theological reflection on the nature of keeping the Sabbath attests a compelling reason for man to think about the wisdom regarding obedience to God’s desire for man to cease from labor in keeping of His Sabbath. The lack of Sabbath keeping has contributed to man’s existential estrangement that is engulfed within man’s state of illusory happiness. Thus, when it comes to the matter, the author of Hebrews exhorts his readers: "Let us therefore strive to enter God’s rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience” (Heb. 4:11).Includes bibliographical references (70-75)Master of Divinit

    Antioxidant dietary fiber from the segment membrane of calamansi (Citrofortunella microcarpa) waste peels

    Abstract onlyCalamansi is a condiment used in a vast variety of Filipino dishes, as well as an ingredient in various beverages, such as calamansi juice. Calamansi peels are discarded as waste. Thus, this research study was conducted to determine the antioxidant dietary fiber from the segment membrane of calamansi peels. The sample was dried and pulverized and the total dietary fiber (TDF) was determined. Extractable polyphenols (EPP) and non-extractable polyphenols (NEPP) were obtained from the TDF. The total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and antioxidant activity were determined. The total dietary fiber content of the segment membrane was 72.6 g per 100 g dry weight, showing that the sample is an excellent source of dietary fiber. The NEPP had the greatest TPC and TFC at 1.07 and 1.91 mg catechin equivalents/g TDF, respectively, compared to EPP. This corresponded to higher antioxidant activities of the NEPP fractions at 93.25% DPPH inhibition and Ferric reducing antioxidant power of 280.22 μM ascorbic acid equivalents in comparison to EPP. Thus the segment membrane of calamansi peels is high in TDF, TPC, TFC, and antioxidant activity. Because of their properties, it is recommended that the segment membrane from calamansi waste peels be developed as a functional ingredient in a number of possible applications, such as an abundant source of dietary fiber and an antioxidant enhancer.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Chemistr

    Perceived wellness among the teaching personnel in a private higher education institution: Status, challenges, and practices as bases for the formulation of a wellness program

    Abstract onlyThis survey research aimed to identify the perceived wellness status, wellness challenges, and wellness practices among the 124 randomly selected full-time teaching personnel in a private higher education institution. Quantitative data were gathered using three duly validated researcher-made survey questionnaires. The descriptive statistics used were frequency count, percentage analysis, means, and standard deviation while the inferential statistics utilized were the t-test for independent samples, the One-way analysis of variance, and Pearson's r, set at .05 alpha. Results revealed that the respondents had excellent wellness status; the environmental, financial, and physical aspects were their predominant wellness challenges while the spiritual, social, and intellectual aspects were their least predominant wellness challenges. They had a marginal level of wellness challenges in the environmental, physical, financial, occupational, and emotional areas and a low level of wellness challenges in the intellectual, social, and spiritual aspects. The emotion-oriented practices were their most predominant wellness practices and avoidance strategy practices were their least predominant wellness practices. They had a very high extent of emotion-oriented practices and task-oriented practices and a high extent of avoidance strategy practices. They differed significantly in their wellness status when classified according to educational attainment and in their level of wellness challenges when grouped according to sex. No significant differences existed in the wellness status when grouped according to sex and civil status and no significant differences were noted in the wellness challenges when they were classified according to civil status and educational attainment and in the extent of their wellness practices when grouped according to sex, civil status, and educational attainment. The teaching personnel's wellness status, wellness challenges, and wellness practices were positively and significantly correlated.     Epidemiological investigation of dengue cases in the Province of Aklan from 2015 – 2019

    Abstract onlyDengue is a major public health problem in the Philippines and is endemic in all regions of the country. The country's outbreaks are largely seasonal, with most episodes occurring during the wet season (June-November). The provincial government has declared a dengue outbreak in Aklan because of the "alarming increase" in cases in the province. In Aklan alone, the Provincial Health Office reported 2,121 dengue cases from January to July 2019, 157% higher than the 824 cases recorded in the same period of 2018. In 2017, the province recorded only 467 dengue cases from January 1 to July 6. At least 85 barangays in Aklan have clustering cases of dengue. Anchored on the theoretical framework of Epidemiological Triad of Disease Causation, this epidemiological study employed a descriptive-relational-longitudinal design aimed to determine the epidemiological characteristics of dengue cases in Aklan in terms of age, sex, and spatio-temporal pattern. It involved all the confirmed cases of dengue recorded by the Provincial Health Office of Aklan in the past 5 years. It revealed that the year 2019 recorded the highest total number of cases. It is also noteworthy that a massive increase of cases occurred from 2018-2019 with a difference of more than 4000 cases. Based on the results of the 5-year surveillance period, a general rising trend of the frequency of cases and a surge of cases or an outbreak was expected on the third quarter of the year that falls during the rainy season. Younger population was found to be at of higher risk of contracting dengue infection. Males are more at risk than females. There were more cases of dengue in the coastal areas, where the epicenter (Kalibo) is located. Areas near coastal regions are vulnerable to dengue infection. In terms of variable associations, it revealed that the area where the children reside could slightly impact the number of dengue cases among the younger victims of the disease. Lastly, there is not enough evidence that supports the connection between the spatial and temporal pattern of dengue cases in Aklan. The results of this study suggest that transmission of dengue is very focal. The value of early intervention in reducing the medical, social and economic impact of the disease, and the finite resources available for investigation and control should be taken into consideration.Includes bibliographical referencesMaster of Arts in Nursin

    Journal articleThis descriptive research focused on the learning practices through online platform of the financial management students of a private higher education in Iloilo City. The 231 Financial Management students, enrolled for the 2nd semester of academic year 2021-2022 from 1st to 4th year are chosen as the respondents and quota sampling technique was used to identify them. The results revealed that online platform fairly improved the learning practices of the Financial Management students. Time management and study habits are crucial to students’ learning practices, especially in higher years. This implies that each student has his own way and style of learning. Furthermore, the learning practices through online platform has taught students the importance of being flexible in using their time, carrying out study habits that can help them to learn, and having a learning environment that is appropriate for learning that can improve to their performance.Central Philippine Universit

    Antioxidant activity, total phenolic and flavonoid content of bioactive fractions of Symplocos polyandra leaves

    Abstract onlySymplocos polyandra, locally known as balakbakan, is distributed throughout Southeast Asia, especially in the Philippines. The lack of available literature regarding the phytochemistry of this plant species prompted the conduct of testing of its potential antioxidant activity and quantification of its total flavonoid content and phenolic content. Balakbakan leaves were collected, exhaustively extracted with methanol, and fractionated on a silica gel column. 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyI (DPPH) assay showed that the acetone fraction has the highest percent DPPH radical inhibition with 86.41% at 500 ppm compared to 0.5 mM ascorbic acid at 87.61%. The acetone - methanol fraction has the highest ferric reducing capacity with a value of 208.24 μM ascorbic acid equivalents at 500 ppm. The total phenolic content of the different fractions ranged from 21.88 to 29.99 pg/mL catechin equivalents, with hexane - acetone fractions having the highest value. The flavonoid content ranged from 14.28 to 16.64 pg/mL catechin equivalents, with the methanol fraction having the highest value. The compounds responsible for the high antioxidant activity may not be a phenolic or flavonoid. Fractions from Symplocos polyandra are a promising source of bioactive compounds with antioxidant activity. Cytotoxicity test and analyses of alkaloid and chlorophyll content of the leaves is recommended for the leaves to be developed into tea products.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Chemistr

    Phytochemical composition, antioxidant, and antibacterial activity of the Philippine marine green alga (Ulva pertusa)

    Journal articleThe phytochemical constituents, total phenolic and flavonoid contents, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of the ethanolic extract of the marine green alga Ulva pertusa collected from floating fish net cages off the coast of Guimaras island, Philippines, were investigated. Qualitative phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of bioactive compounds including alkaloids, flavonoids, phenols, saponins, tannins, and terpenoids. Quantitatively, total phenolic and flavonoid contents of the extract were 20.54±2.08 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE) g-1 and 539.07±6.36 mg rutin equivalent (RE) g-1, respectively. The antioxidant activity of the extract using 1,1-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay exhibited a concentration-dependent radical scavenging capacity. Additionally, the ethanolic extract inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus ATCC25923, Escherichia coli ATCC25922, Streptococcus agalactiae, Aeromonas hydrophila, A. sobria, and Vibrio harveyi in a concentration-dependent manner with strong inhibitory activity at 100 mg mL-1 concentration. Taken together, U. pertusa contains bioactive compounds that possess potent antibacterial activity and remarkable antioxidant capacities.
