Life beneath the waters: Design, construction, and testing of a remotely operated underwater vehicle for visual monitoring and health identification of corals
Abstract onlyThis study aimed to design, construct, and test an Underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) for visual monitoring and heath identification of corals. The purpose of this study was to give researchers an opportunity to conduct their studies in a safe, efficient, and cost effective way through visual monitoring of the marine ecosystems that could help marine managing authorities address current and emerging science and management needs.
The system consisted of a topside control where the control box, laptop, and battery were located. Five underwater thrusters were installed on the device to allow its maneuver underwater and an endoscopic camera was used to visually monitor the underwater environment. The device is composed of a control system to control the ROV movement, lights, and system power; a monitoring system to access real time video from the camera; and a coral health identification system to identify and label healthy, bleached, and dead corals in real time. Captured images and recorded videos will be stored in the system storage. Multiple tests were performed to check the performance of the device in terms of functionality, efficiency, and operational time. Results proved the device to be fully functional. The efficiency test results yielded 80% for the coral detection and 87.5% for the coral health identification which could be further improved through upgrading both the camera and the data set in the training stage of the model. The effect of discipline-based art education on the aesthetic appreciation ability and art attitude among art design majors in a university in China
Abstract onlyDiscipline based art education (DBAE) is an educational concept representing the general trend of visual art education in contemporary American schools. This study used embedded experimental intervention design to determine the effect of the visual art appreciation education based on DBAE on aesthetic appreciation ability and art attitude of students of a selected university in China for Academic Year 2021-2022. This study collected quantitative and qualitative data, including questionnaires, teaching observation forms, and focus group interviews. The data were used to address two null hypotheses and six research objectives. Through this research, it was found that the visual art appreciation education activity based on DBAE can significantly improve students' aesthetic appreciation ability. Although the students' art attitude has improved before and after the experimental teaching, it has not reached a statistically significant difference. Students have a positive attitude towards the visual art appreciation course based on DBAE, have a good experience, and highly recognize the course.They are full of expectations for future visual art courses.Includes bibliographical referencesDoctor of Educatio
Supervisor’s leadership style, personnel empowerment, engagement, work-life balance, and job satisfaction for personnel intention to stay in the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in Henan Province, China
Journal articleThe study aimed to analyze the role of leadership on medical laboratory personnel’s empowerment, engagement, work-life balance, job satisfaction, and intention to stay in the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in Henan Province, China. A casual-comparative with retrospective pre-posttest research design and a self-assessed questionnaire was used to gather primary data from 334 medical laboratory personnel at the Disease Control and Prevention Centers in seventeen (17) cities in Henan Province, China. The level of empowerment personnel engagement of medical laboratory is high, work-life balance is “not sure”, job satisfaction is slightly dissatisfied/ satisfied. These differs in age, education, and years of service. The strongest predictor of intention to stay of medical laboratory personnel is the level of engagement which is strongly correlated with the perceived leadership of the supervisors
Difficulties encountered by students in a private higher education institution at Iloilo City in attending online classes
Abstract onlyThis research study was carried out to determine the difficulties students at a Private Higher Education Institution face when attending online classes. During the COVID-19 epidemic, which caused unprecedented disruption in people's lives, the Commission on Higher Education needed to find alternative modern strategies that would allow for more flexible teaching and learning alternatives to suit the needs of students, particularly undergraduates. During the data gathering process, 107 people responded. Non-probability sampling, specifically convenience sampling, was utilized by the researchers among the third and fourth-year Financial Management students. The researchers used a descriptive research approach to assess the respondent's profiles, the difficulties they encountered, and their significant differences. The descriptive study provided a detailed understanding and characterized the issues students have when attending online classes. The research instrument used for data collection was online researcher-made questionnaires.
Researchers calculated, analyzed, interpreted, and structured data using statistical methods such as frequency distribution, percentage, standard deviation, mean, Mann-Whitney U Test, and Kruskal-Wallis. When taken as a whole and classified according to their profile, the difficulties encountered by Financial Management students in terms of Access to Instructional Materials and Self-Motivation are determined to be very low. While the difficulties encountered in terms of Time-Management and Learning Environment are minimal when seen as a whole and classified according to their profile. This accounts that third and fourth-year Financial Management students had little to no difficulty accessing instructional materials, sustaining self-motivation, managing time, and keeping an optimum learning environment during online classes.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Business Administration Major in Financial Managemen
A model analysis of the worthiness of public transport services to Guimaras Island as assessed by tourists: Inputs to the enhancement of a tourism development plan
Abstract onlyThe study was a model analysis of the worthiness of public transport services to Guimaras Island as assessed by tourists travelers. A non-experimental predictive research design using linear regression was used. A total sample size of 389 respondents participated in the study. A continuous Likert scale was used to measure the tourists’ assessment of the worthiness of public transport services to Guimaras Island and to enable probability testing on data. Results pointed out that young to middle-age tourists (18-35 years old) have higher assessment of the worthiness of transport services as compared to older tourists (56 years old and above) especially in terms of convenience, reliability, and availability of public transportation. Light users (once a year) as compared to heavy users (once a week) of transport services have higher assessment of the worthiness of the transport services especially in terms of safety, convenience and reliability, while professionals/employees have higher assessment of safety, reliability, convenience, and value for money as compared to housewife and students. These demographic (age, occupation) and psychographic (usage) variables are worth considering in revisiting the quality of transport services being provided to the tourists, especially in terms of cleanliness, availability of seats while waiting and accessibility, punctuality and service frequency of transport service, ticket availability and fare promotion and discounts, lower fare, advanced booking/online payment systems to deliver better travel experience to the Island of Guimaras.Doctor of Managemen
Library security management among state universities and colleges in Panay: Basis for a library security management plan
Abstract onlyEvery library must have a well-planned security management to secure and protect all library resources as well as the people. Thus, this study was conducted in order to determine the library security management among State Universities and Colleges in Panay. A researcher made questionnaire was used to gather the needed data. The descriptive research design was used with a one-shot survey to collect the pertinent data. Respondents were licensed head librarians of thirty-seven (37) campuses of State Universities and Colleges in Panay. Statistical tools used were frequency count, percentage, and mean. The data revealed that majority of SUCs’ libraries were managed by one licensed librarian. Furthermore, budget allocation for books and subscriptions had the highest allotted amount. Challenges/threats to print resources were categorized as loss, damage, vandalism and delinquent borrowers. Results also showed that textbooks had the most cases of loss, vandalism, and delinquent borrowers. On the contrary, there are no serious threats to non-print resources. Moreover, there is no major threat to the safety of the library's physical resources. Physical resources among SUC Libraries in Panay have been harmed as a result of fire, water, and insect damage. Lastly, the most common security systems available among SUC’s in Panay were CCTV cameras. Most of them have barcodes and air condition units as equipment. Also, there are available manual security procedures at SUCs' libraries in Panay. All ten manual security procedures are completely available at SUCs' libraries in Panay. Proposed design of an integrated transport terminal in Santa Barbara, Iloilo
Abstract onlyTransport terminals are essential facilities in ensuring the convenience and effectiveness of the public transport network layout. This project study proposes an integrated transport terminal at Zone 5 Poblacion, Santa Barbara, Iloilo to address the problem of lack of a proper transportation facility in the municipality. The proposed plan includes a three-storey building composed of the terminal for the jeepneys and tricycles on the first floor, commercial spaces on the second floor, and a parking space for private vehicles on the third floor. An eco-friendly design utilizing green building technology such as vertical shadings, a rainwater harvesting system, and the use of natural lighting was incorporated. Architectural, structural, electrical and plumbing plans in accordance with the existing codes and regulations are also included in the study. For the structural and architectural design, the National Structural Code of the Philippines (NSCP), Ultimate Stress Design (USD) for reinforced concrete members and Allowable Strength Design (ASD) for steel served as the basis. The design and development of Tabang: Fire emergency response software application
Abstract onlyA timely and efficient response is crucial and must be implemented during times of emergency. Emergencies specifically fire pose notable threats and damage to lives and properties if not responded immediately. In the Philippines, one of the identified issues is the delayed response time with underlying factors: distance of the nearest fire station from the area of the incident, traffic situation, and the availability of fire trucks. In addition, local citizens do not have the hotline and contact numbers of these fire responders from which delayed call for action is experienced. The Tabang app is a fire emergency response software application to improve the responder’s response time during operations. Tabang’s objectives are: to provide citizen users the ease and convenience to call for help from the nearest fire stations within the location, to guide responders using map routes with less traffic, and to provide information regarding the availability of fire trucks from each station. It will make use of Google Maps API for precise emergency locations, Google Directions API for directions and current traffic situations, and Distance Matrix API to provide travel distance between routes. The Tabang app for citizen users can be accessible to those who have accounts signed up, while the Tabang app for BFP users will be available for those on-boarded fire stations. It will employ Twilio for citizen user verification using OTP via SMS and PostgreSQL as the database for user data storage.
