Assessment of tourist destination potential of Cuyo Islands: Inputs to developing an integrated tourism development plan
Abstract onlyThe economic benefits of tourism have spurred government officials to identify places of interest within their territorial jurisdiction and to develop a tourism development plan. Doing so requires an assessment of the tourist destination to provide relevant inputs. This paper assessed the Cuyo Islands in Palawan in terms of three tourism elements namely accessibility, accommodations, and attraction. A descriptive action research was used where 61 respondents – composed of two tourism experts, 17 Sangguniang Bayan members, 10 service providers and 32 tourists participated in the study. Primary data are derived from the survey, the semi- interview schedule, and the onsite evaluation. In terms of accessibility, Cuyo islands have been found to be moderately accessible. Accommodations and attractions are both highly available. SWOT analysis reveals that the Cuyo islands have a high potential as a tourist destination. Strategies formulated during the workshop with the stakeholders are introduction of sustainable tourism products, destination branding like kiteboarding, cultural tourism or education tourism, market penetration and increase publicity efforts by allocating a budget in advertising the island to domestic market, product developments and improve existing services by entering a public-private partnerships with telco companies and other potential investors, improvement of general image by investment into IT and online presence, and improve guest’s satisfaction through better government intervention. Inputs were made based on these findings to aid in developing the integrated tourism development plan for the Cuyo islands.Includes bibliographical referencesMaster in Business Administration major in Tourism and Hospitality Managemen
Better future with better food: A prototype solar-powered cold storage using thermoelectric peltier cooling
Abstract onlyOff grid areas particularly rural islands and other remote areas have difficulty securing electricity and are dependent on the solar panel as an alternative source, which only the financially stable households in the island are capable of. Foods must be refrigerated or be stored to avoid spoiling and to keep their freshness. This study was conducted to construct, design, and test a prototype of a cold storage room and evaluate if it is capable of being implemented into an actual full-scale system into rural islands and other remote areas The study used a Peltier module as the cooling system, an ice box made of Styrofoam with dimensions of 310mm by 205mm by 232mm with wall thickness of 22mm, a 12V, 100AH battery, and photovoltaic solar panels. The tests used tomatoes, mangoes, eggplant, okra, and chili as the loads. The four-day tests were separated into two parts, one with loads (fruits and / or vegetables) and the other one with no loads inside. On the testing without loads, results have shown that the system was capable of reaching the lowest temperature of -1.2° Celsius at 125.7° ambient temperature. On testing with loads, the lowest recorded temperature is 7° Celsius. Based on the assessment of the results from the prototype system, the implementation of the actual full-scale cold storage room is possible, provided an improved cooling system is used that could run the system.Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineerin

Abstract onlyThis study determined the influence of financial literacy on online purchasing decisions among the business administration students amidst COVID-19 pandemic. The study further examined if there were significant differences and relationships between financial literacy in terms of budgeting, saving, and debt, and online purchasing decisions in terms of purchasing expense, quantity, and frequency. Cross tabulation, frequency count and percentage distribution, mean, t-Test, ANOVA, standard deviation, and Pearson correlation coefficient were used to analyze the data collected from 250 respondents who were subjected to a survey-form questionnaire. The findings showed that the respondents, when grouped according to their profiles, were financially literate and had an understanding of budgeting, saving, and debt. In terms of their online purchasing decisions, it differs depending on their profiles, as most of their purchase expense range from 500 and below, their purchase quantity of 5 items and below, and their purchase frequency of once a month. Financial literacy had no bearing on the respondent’s profile; the only significant difference was in the debt aspect based on sex profile. Additional findings showed that the respondent's profile did not influence their online purchasing decisions in terms of expense, quantity, and frequency. Lastly, there was no relationship between financial literacy and online purchasing decisions since the respondent's being highly literate or least literate did not affect his/her online purchasing decisions amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Business Administration Major in Business Managemen
Level 1 seismic risk assessment of heritage buildings at Central Philippine University
Abstract onlyThe 25 cultural heritage (CH) assets selected in this study reflect Central Philippine University's 117-year history as well as its founding philosophy, Scientia et Fides. The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) has designated the entire university as a national historical site (level 2). Of more than a hundred buildings inside the CPU, 25 buildings were discovered to have been built fifty (50) or more years ago. The Rapid Visual Screening (RVS) forms produced by DLSU-Manila were used to undertake a level 1 structural seismic risk assessment for each CH asset. Seismic hazard, seismic vulnerability, and building condition vulnerability modifiers are the main parameters in the RVS instrument. The assessment results were analyzed, ranked, and classified as low, medium, or high. The results reflect that out of 25 CH structures, two (2) are classified as high while twenty-three (23) are classified as medium risk in terms of seismic risk. Statistical data and interpretations for each parameter can be seen in the full paper. A risk map showing the seismic risk classification of CH buildings is also included in the full paper as well as the building information sheet template and the electronic file prepared for each CH building. Regular inspections and structural seismic risk assessments of CH assets inside CPU are highly encouraged to preserve the history of these properties while also protecting the current occupants. To protect the cultural value of buildings with high seismic risk indices, it must be monitored and perform a level 2 structural evaluation for further investigation.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Civil Engineerin
Efficiency of utilizing corrugated box, plastic and wooden crate: Eggshell breakage reduction during distribution
Abstract onlyThe purpose of this research was to reduce egg breakage during transit by utilizing and testing the efficiency of using corrugated box, plastic, and a wooden crate as secondary packaging and comparing their performance to that of not using any secondary packaging during egg distribution and increasing the number of allowable tray stacks; thereby ensuring egg quality and stacked egg tray stability while lowering the cost. A laboratory performance test consisting of drop and vibration tests, as well as a trundling test, was performed to carry out this study. In the trundling test, the plastic crate and wooden crate produced the most undamaged layer eggs, followed by the corrugated box and without secondary packaging, while in laboratory testing, the plastic crate outperformed all other packaging materials in terms of egg protection, followed by the wooden crate, the corrugated box, and without secondary packaging. Statistically, there is no significant difference in the performance of the four packages. Cost analysis showed the plastic crate was the most cost-effective packaging to use, followed by the wooden crate, the corrugated box, and no secondary packaging. It was shown that a plastic crate can be a better secondary package when transporting eggs.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Packaging Engineerin
