Seasonal population dynamics of Lepeophtheirus spinifer and Neobenedenia sp. coinfecting snubnose pompano (Trachinotus blochii) breeders in marine cages in the Philippines

    No full text
Journal articleStudies on the biology and ecology of sea lice are lacking in tropical regions such as in Southeast Asia where finfish cage farming has grown dramatically in the past decades. This study investigated the seasonal population dynamics of ectoparasites infecting captive snubnose pompano (Trachinotus blochii) breeders in marine cages in the Philippines. The pompano breeders were found to be naturally coinfected with caligid copepod Lepeophtheirus spinifer and capsalid monogenean Neobenedenia sp. These breeders were monitored and examined bimonthly (n = 10 per sampling) from September 2017 to May 2018, covering the warm season and cold season in the Philippines. Our results clearly show that L. spinifer population maintain a 100 % prevalence throughout warm and cold seasons however, mean abundance and intensity increased only during the cold months (early November to early March) and displayed an oscillating trend during this period. Highest mean intensity was recorded in early January (221.4 ± 24.6; temperature = 27.5 ± 0.3 °C; salinity = 34.8 ± 0.3 ppt) while the lowest mean intensity was recorded during the warm months dipping to 12.5 ± 1.9 in early May (temperature = 30.5 ± 0.3 °C; salinity = 30.3 ± 0.3 ppt). The prevalence of adult and pre-adult was high throughout the monitoring period at 70–100 % except at the start of summer (late March to early May) for pre-adult (30–90 %). In comparison, the chalimus stages were only observed during the cold months specifically from early November to late January with prevalence of 40–80 %. The highest mean abundance (3.4 ± 0.7) and mean intensity (4.3 ± 0.6) was in early November which coincided with the first peak of the total L. spinifer population. Neobenedenia sp. occurred year-round with no significant changes in the population mean abundance and mean intensity between warm and cold seasons. This study presents comprehensive information on the seasonal population dynamics of L. spinifer and Neobenedenia sp. in the Philippines, providing valuable insights on the ecology of caligid sea louse which is fundamental in the formulation of control and management strategies of these economically significant ectoparasites.SEAFDEC/AQD Igang Marine Station for assistance during the sample collection; funded by CFOS-UPV and SEAFDEC/AQ

Abstract onlyPretzels are a worldwide favorite snack item. They are salty, crunchy baked hand-held bread. It is a type of baked snack composed primarily of wheat flour and appears in a variety of forms and sizes, but most resemble a twisted knot. On the other hand, Okra is a warm-season vegetable commonly known as gumbo or ladies' fingers. Minerals, vitamins, antioxidants, and fiber are all abundant in it. This study sought to determine significant difference in the level of acceptability of Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.) Pretzel in terms of aroma, texture, color, appearance, taste, and general acceptability and when the respondents are grouped according to age and sex using accidental sampling techniques. The experimental design was used in this study. 30 respondents were categorized by age and sex, and they assessed the product's sensory qualities. 25 were male and 5 were females, 8 of whom were categorized as young and 22 were old. Results show that there was no significant difference in terms of the level of acceptability as to sensory attributes and it also implies that the product was very much liked and acceptable for the respondents. However, there is a significant difference in appearance when the respondents were classified according to age and sex. With the data that have been derived from the research, the researchers concluded that Okra Pretzels was acceptable. This only means that the level of acceptability varies in terms of age and sex.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Hospitality Managemen

Abstract onlyThis study used descriptive-correlational research design to analyze the extent of parental literacy, parent-child relationship, family environment, and perceived emotional competence among preschool children in Shangqiu City, China for school year 2021--2022 as inputs to an enhanced curriculum in family education. Relationships among the variables were also sought. The data of parents and teachers of 396 preschool children in four kindergartens in Shangqiu city were collected through a survey. The analysis showed that there are more male among the preschool children of Shangqiu City, the number of children in three age groups are roughly the same, and nearly one half of respondents’ parents have college education. The level of parental literacy is high, while the level of parent-child relationship, family environment and perceived emotional competence are at moderate level. There are significant relationships between parental educational attainment, parental occupation, and parental literacy, and family environment, however, there is no significant relationship between parent-child relationship and perceived emotional competence among children. Perceived emotional competence increases with the increase of children's age, but there is no significant relationship between children's gender and the four variables. Parental literacy, parent-child relationship, and family environment are significantly correlated with perceived emotional competence among preschool children, among which, parent-child relationship and family environment are positively correlated with them. The family education curriculum in Shangqiu city is still in the primary stage, and there is no perfect family education curriculum system, which is far from meeting the needs of parents for family education knowledge and skills.Includes bibliographical referencesDoctor of Education (with specialization in Curriculum and Instruction

Rural-urban interactions and interdependence: Policy implications for the enhancement of linkages between Iloilo City and the Province of Guimaras

    Get PDF
Journal articleThis study was conducted to analyze the rural-urban interactions and interdependence between Iloilo City and the Province of Guimaras with the aim of identifying policy implications for the enhancement of linkages. Mixed methods approach was employed involving both quantitative and qualitative analysis based on secondary and primary data gathered through service statistics, key informant interviews, focus group discussions and direct field observations. The study found out that there is interdependence between the two areas which has been in existence for over a century based on historical records. The nature and characteristics of linkages are consistent with theories on rural-urban interactions in terms of the flow of goods and sectoral activities. There were mechanisms established in the past for the establishment of a metropolitan arrangement which served as facilitating factors but were not sustained primarily due to changes in local leadership and priorities. There were also barriers that limited its development arising from lack of an enabling policy at the national level to sustain the alliance. Policy gaps at the national and local levels likewise hindered the development of rural-urban linkages primarily on transportation and infrastructure. Despite the challenges, there are prospects that can be pursued towards the development of tourism and livelihood opportunities anchored on the attributes and assets of both areas which can be maximized through improvements in the value chain. There is also a prospect for the revival of the metropolitan arrangement which can pave the way for the integrated development of the Metro Iloilo-Guimaras (MIG) region
