Bioactive components from cucamelon (Melothria scabra) with potential α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity
Abstract onlyCucamelons (Melothria scabra) are found growing in the wild in the Philippines. The lack of available literature regarding the plant species prompted to conduct of this study. This study aimed to extract and fractionate bioactive components from cucamelon with potential α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity. Cucamelon fruit samples were obtained from Brgy. Pagsanga-an Pavia, Iloilo, extracted with methanol, fractionated using silica column chromatography, and assayed for α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity. Results show that most but not all of the fractions have α-amylase inhibitory activity. Only four fractions showed α-amylase activity, namely, acetone (8.97 ± 1.54), acetone: methanol, 4:1 (15.54 ± 2.12), acetone: methanol, 3:2 (11.30 ± 2.51), and acetone: methanol, 1:4 (17.94 ± 2.19). Only one fraction had α-glucosidase inhibitory activity, which is acetone: methanol, 3:2 (3.59 ± 1.10). Cucamelon has a low inhibitory activity for α-amylase and α-glucosidase, enzyme markers of diabetes, which can be compensated by increasing the daily intake. It is recommended that unripe cucamelon fruits can be eaten regularly as salads, or pickled to help prevent the risk of developing diabetes.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Chemistr
Sustainable poultry farming: Design, construction, and testing of a hybrid (solar, grid, battery)-powered egg incubator
Abstract onlyPoultry farming is one of the main components of the chain of supply of livestock that feeds a nation. As the demand continues to increase with the increase in population, poultry farming has been relying on artificial production of poultry supply such is true in terms of the incubation process. However commercialized incubator often run on purely grid power for its operation. The dependence on the local energy supply results in additional cost in production as well as a decrease in productivity whenever power outages occur. Thus, this study aimed to design, construct and test a hybrid powered egg incubator to help lessen the cost of production of poultry farming while utilizing the energy from the sun, a renewable energy and incorporating a battery to supply power in case of power outages increasing reliability and decreasing cost. The conduct of the study was implemented, and the device was successfully fabricated, tested and analyzed. Based on the gathered result, the hybrid powered egg incubator was able to perform as intended with a high percentage on the hatching rate of the incubator, which proves that the design made is capable of hatching eggs. Because the primary focus of this study was to lessen the cost of production as well as increase productivity due to losses of potential hatchlings during power interruption, the energy consumption of the device was monitored and it showed that the implementation of the hybrid energy system on the egg incubator was able to save as much as 50 percent of the energy utilized on the incubation and hatching process of the incubator. This in turn would result in the cost of energy consumption of the incubation process to be cut by half and would also affect the total cost it needs to hatch a batch of chickens artificially.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Electronics Engineerin

Food and organizations: The relationship of organizational support and attitude towards office gastrodiplomacy among employees of a public organization
Conference paperOffice gastrodiplomacy refers to how food shapes and influences our social relations within organizations, usually in positive ways. Although already a pervasive practice, it is only recently that this concept has received wide attention from industry practitioners and researchers in the behavioral sciences. This emerging topic traces its origins to socioanthropological studies applied to modern work environments like office settings. To expound scholarship in this field, particularly in the local parlance, this study aims to present novel findings on how organizational support, in aspects involving staff development, resources, and emotional support, affects attitude towards office gastrodiplomacy. A total of 327 respondents participated in a one-shot survey administered from September to December 2019 at the 25 offices of a public organization in the Philippines. Employing a descriptiverelational design, descriptive findings revealed that employees indicated being ‘fairly supported’ by their offices, while a higher proportion of respondents stated that they generally have a ‘favorable attitude’ towards office gastrodiplomacy. Relational statistics, however, generated a ‘not significant relationship’ between the two variables as a whole and across the three components. The researchers argue that it is likely that such a finding is a result of how the respondents only received organizational support in ‘fair’ terms. As such, results may somewhat differ if a ‘high’ favorable attitude to office gastrodiplomacy is complemented with ‘high’ organizational support. It is then proposed that a similar design may be replicated among employees in private organizations who may offer a different perspective, especially as regards aspects of organizational support

Scale inhibitors for industrial circulating water systems: A review
Journal articlePresence and deposition of sparingly soluble salts, known as scale, has been one of utmost damaging problems of circulating water. In industry, the scaling phenomenon may cause technical problems such as reduction of heat transfer efficiency in cooling systems and obstruction of pipes. Therefore, adding scale inhibitors that exhibit desired efficiencies to control scale is so important to mitigate adverse effect in water circulation systems because of their high tolerance for cations, such as Ca2+, Mg2+, and their ability to efficiently dissolve the unstable polymorphs of inorganic salts at the early stages of crystallization, thus impairing scaling. This paper reviews the research progress and state-of-the-art developments of scale inhibitors, including natural scale inhibitors and synthetic scale inhibitors. Natural scale inhibitors, including natural organic and plant extract scale inhibitors, are non-toxic, inexpensive, widely used, biodegradable and in line with the characteristics of green chemistry. Synthetic scale inhibitors mainly composed of phosphorous, polycarboxylic acid and polyaspartic acid are widely used due to their excellent performance. Detailed comparison between natural scale inhibitors and synthetic additives alongside future directions towards antiscalant are also discussed. The former are less water-soluble, while the latter require a large dosage, which causes a great burden to the environment. In particular, the need for developing green, efficient, easy preparation, and pollution-free scale inhibitors, studying the interactions between scale inhibitors and metal ions is stressed. It is expected that this paper could offer an insight in deeper understanding the scale inhibitors in industry and provide some clues for exploring more advanced scale inhibitors technologies.National Natural Science Foundation of China (Grants 21571188); Science and Technology Development Program of Kaifeng, China (ZD17005); Henan University Double First-Class Major Project, China (2018YLZDCG02
