Potential alpha-amylase and alpha-glucosidase inhibitory activity of bioactive fractions from alugbati (Basella alba) leaves
Abstract onlyThis study evaluated the potential in vitro inhibitory activity of Basella alba leaves against enzyme markers of diabetes mellitus, α-amylase, and α-glucosidase. The dried plant sample was ground into fine powder, defatted, and soaked in methanol to obtain the crude extract. The crude methanolic extract of Basella alba was then fractionated sequentially in acetone-methanol mixtures with increasing solvent polarity ratios. Fractions obtained were evaluated for their α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory potential. The standard drug, acarbose inhibited 37.44 ± 7.65%, 83.99 ± 0.86%, and 86.52 ± 0.40% of α-amylase activity at 10, 30, and 50 ppm. The highest inhibition was observed in the acetone-methanol (4:1) fraction which inhibited 57.80 ± 0.71%, 56.39 ± 0.49%, and 46.94 ± 0.26% of α-amylase activity, followed by the acetone fraction with inhibitory activity of 22.24 ± 0.41%, 38.05 ± 0.68%, and 46.62 ± 0.32% at increasing concentrations of 50, 200, and 350 ppm, respectively. The acetone-methanol (1:4) mixture exhibited the lowest activity at 8.00 ± 0.35% for 50 ppm, and 0.61 ± 0.27% for 200 ppm. However, no inhibitory activity was demonstrated in any of the fractions of Basella alba against α-glucosidase. Total flavonoid content analysis revealed that all fractions have the same flavonoid content. Basella alba may serve an essential role in managing the risk of diabetes mellitus and is recommended for consumption on a regular basis.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Chemistr
Heritage community resilience: The experience of stakeholders in Calle Real, Iloilo City, Philippines
Conference paperCultural heritage is a significant part of the UN Agenda 2030 in making cities safe and resilient. Yet, the role of cultural heritage on resilience has not been sufficiently investigated. The study contributes to the discussion of the role of knowledge and practices in the prevention and recovery from risks within the frameworks of heritage preservation and community-based disaster management approach. The research aims to describe the knowledge about the heritage structures as well as the heritage-related practices of stakeholders employed in Calle Real, Philippines, an urban heritage zone in Iloilo City, Philippines. Through a social survey with 200 stakeholders, key results showed that respondents are aware that the unique character of Calle Real is worth preserving. Moreover, the multiplicity of uses of the buildings makes these prone to rapid wear and tear. Also, a majority of the respondents are aware of the buildings' susceptibility to fire, seismic hazards, and strong winds. There is a gap, however, between the respondents' awareness of the risks of the buildings and their heritage preservation practices. Few respondents reported being affiliated with heritage advocacy groups or to take part in actual conservation activities. There are possible ways to address the disparities in knowledge and practices with the goal of enhancing heritage resilience to natural & man-made hazards

Burning grey: The worldwide influence of a locally published grey literature
Conference paperRice is a major staple crop in the Philippines, which produces a large amount of rice each year. On the other hand, rice production generates biomass waste in the form of rice husks. In consideration of the rice husks’ potential as a biomass energy source and support the development of the rice husk gas stove technology in the Philippines, Engineer Alexis T. Belonio had published a grey literature (GL) entitled “Rice Husk Gas Stove Handbook.” Hence, to fully understand the impact of the technology, a citation analysis was conducted. The works that cited the GL were retrieved from Google Scholar using Harzing’s Publish or Perish software. The complete title of the GL was used as keywords for the search string. Results revealed that the GL was cited by 155 literatures written by 398 authors from 31 countries. Seventy-five (48.4%) of the 155 literatures were cited 797 times. The results showed the wide utilization and the impact of locally-published GL, thereby confirming GL’s value in research and development

Seismic screening and structural investigation of heritage buildings for adaptive reuse: A survey study at Iloilo City, Philippines
Conference paperBuilding adaptive reuse has been a popular strategy for cultural heritage conservation of structures for it serves two basic objectives of preserving heritage structures and promoting cultural heritage and tourism. Adaptive reuse is the adaptation of an old structure to allow the introduction of a modern function into the old structure. Old buildings are not demolished but recycled into modern uses. This strategy, however, needs a careful and thorough assessment of these existing heritage buildings to assure their resilience and sustainability to future hazards. Heritage buildings for adaptive reuse due to age and structural deterioration are highly vulnerable to hazards like earthquakes. Moreover, these buildings when used for commercial purposes may be subjected to additional loads due to changes in function. Considering the age of the structure, conformity to new design codes, additional loads imposed by unit modification, and the new function brought about by adaptive reuse of these structures, there is a need to assess these buildings to assure their safety and continuous use. Promoting adaptive reuse of heritage buildings and tourism is most appropriate in heritage zones like Calle Real in Iloilo City, the site for the case study. This paper presents a rapid seismic screening of buildings to prioritize a population of heritage buildings in a heritage zone for further detailed inspection. A site survey of the buildings was conducted at the heritage zone of Calle Real, Iloilo City in terms of their current use, and current condition to determine potential structural, maintenance, and functional issues related to resilience and to recommend future improvements in the implementation of adaptive reuse of heritage structures in cities and towns to assure their sustainability

Abstract onlyThis study aimed to determine the level of work-life balance and work engagement of medical technologists in tertiary government hospitals in Iloilo. Specifically, this study aimed to describe the personal characteristics of medical technologists in terms of age, sex, civil status, educational attainment, length of service, income and job status; determine the medical technologists’ degree of work-life balance in terms of work-family conflict and family-work conflict; determine the level of work engagement of medical technologists in terms of vigor, dedication and absorption; determine if there is a significant relationship between the medical technologists’ personal characteristics and their degree of work-life balance; determine if there is a significant relationship between the medical technologists’ personal characteristics and their level of work engagement; and determine if there is a significant relationship between the medical technologists’ degree of work-life balance and their level of work engagement. This is a descriptive- correlational study that employed a one-shot survey design. The non-experimental design was used to describe the degree of work-life balance and level of work engagement of medical technologists in a public hospital in Iloilo city and to explain whether a relationship exists between these variables. The study revealed that majority of the respondents were female, most were single, big majority with no Masters degree, forty three point six (43.6%) percent were on permanent status and mostly earned three hundred thousand (300,000) pesos annually. Ninety percent of the medical technologists had fairly good balanced work and life and time spent for work was not a conflict with family responsibilities or interfere with home or family life. Big majority showed a high level of work engagement, thus often times to almost always they were bursting with energy at work, felt so strong, vigorous, and intensely challenging tasks made them feel happy. Civil status and job status showed significantly related with work life balance in terms of work – family conflicts, single medical technologists had fair to good work life balance while married ones showed fair work life balance, moreover the results showed that work life balance in terms of family – work conflicts had nothing to do with the personal characteristics of the respondents. There were no significant relationships between vigor and dedication to either the personal characteristics of the respondents. A high level of work engagement showed to those with bachelor’s degree holder while average level showed among those who started enrolling their Masters degree. The degree of family – work conflict was significantly related with work engagement while the degree of work- family conflict was not significantly related to work engagement. The level of work engagement in terms of vigor revealed a significant relationship with work life balance in terms of work – family conflict. Neither work – family conflict nor family- work conflict were significantly related with work engagement in terms of dedication. There was no enough evidence to reject the null hypotheses on the relationships between work engagement in terms of absorption and work life balance in terms of work- family conflict and family-work conflict.Includes bibliographical referencesMaster in Public Administratio
