Financial attitude and management practices as predictors of financial freedom among the faculty in private higher education institutions: Inputs to a human resource development plan
Abstract onlyThis survey-predictive-correlational research was conducted to determine the financial attitude and management practices as predictors of financial freedom among the faculty in private higher education institutions in Iloilo City as inputs to a Human Resource Development Plan. Conducted in May 2022, 205 randomly selected regular full-time faculty members in three private HEIs for academic year 2021-2022 responded to the four researcher-made data-gathering instruments—the Financial Literacy Questionnaire; a Rating Scale on Financial Attitude; a Rating Scale on Financial Management Practices; and a Rating Scale on Financial Freedom. Data-gathering was administered through an electronic form (google form) with the link sent via email or through other social media platforms such as Facebook and Messenger. Six identified respondents from the three private HEIs were invited to a Zoom meeting for the Focused Group Discussion. Transcribed data were utilized for qualitative analysis. Quantitative data were processed via the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software, version 2.0. Frequency count, percentage analysis, means, and standard deviations were employed in the descriptive data analysis. The Pearson's r and the Multiple Regression Analysis, set at .05 alpha level, were employed in the inferential analysis. Study results revealed the following: The respondents had high literacy in budgeting and debts/borrowing and average literacy in savings/investments. Generally, they had positive financial attitude when taken as an entire group and in terms of debts/borrowings, and savings/investments; and very positive attitude in terms of budgeting; practiced financial management in all three constructs—budgeting, debts/borrowings, and savings/investments to a high extent; and had high financial freedom in all three constructs—availability, sufficiency, and savings/investments. Majority of the socio-demographic profile and financial literacy profile were positively and significantly related to financial attitude in all three constructs--budgeting, debts/borrowings, and savings/investments; financial management practices in all three constructs-- budgeting, debts/borrowings, and savings/investments; and financial freedom in all three constructs--availability, sufficiency, and savings/investments. Financial attitude, financial management practices and financial freedom (in majority of their identified constructs) were positively and significantly related. Financial management practices in terms of savings/investments, financial attitude, and number of dependents were significant predictors of the respondents’ financial freedom in terms of availability. Financial management practices in terms of savings/investments; financial attitude in terms of savings/investments; number of dependents, overall financial literacy; and net take-home pay were found to significantly predict the respondents’ financial freedom in terms of sufficiency. Financial management practices in terms of savings/investments, age, academic rank, income from other sources, and financial attitude in terms of debts/borrowings were found to significantly predict the respondents’ financial freedom in terms of savings/investments. A Human Resource Development Plan for Private Higher Education Institutions was prepared as an offshoot of the study.Includes bibliographical referencesDoctor of Management (Business Management
Proposed two-storey municipal hall annex building in Santa Barbara, Iloilo
Abstract onlyDelay in government transactions is one of the challenges most people encounter in government facilities. The municipality of Santa Barbara in the province of Iloilo is one of the municipalities with underdeveloped municipal hall. It is overcrowded with offices and lacks enough space to cater volume of clients which in turn, causes delays in transaction. Thus, this study was conducted to address the issue on transaction delays in the municipal hall of Santa Barbara, by providing an expansion facility that promises to improve the flow of transaction. The project is a two-storey annex building with a roof deck and has a total floor area of 1797.13 sq. m. It incorporated the offices located outside the municipal hall and included a function room to cater the meetings and events of the municipality. The design included a bridge that connects the municipal hall and annex building to improve mobility of clients. Structural design was developed using Ultimate Strength Design method and provisions from National Structural Code of the Philippines 2015 and National Building Code of the Philippines. Philippine Electrical Code and Plumbing Code of the Philippines were utilized for electrical and plumbing plans. Technical design and calculations were made using AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Microsoft Excel. Rainwater harvesting system was integrated in the design as a green technology. The proposed project has an estimated cost of P54, 053, 705. 59 and is expected to be completed in 240 days. The project will be funded by the local government of Santa Barbara. Antioxidant activity and total phenolics and flavonoids contents of bioactive fractions of calamansi (Citrofortunella microcarpa) peels
Abstract onlyThe purpose of this study is to investigate the antioxidant activity of fractions from epicarpium of Citrofortunella microcarpa (Philippine Lime) peels extract. Dried epicarpium of peels were extracted with methanol and fractionated with silica column and subjected to DPPH and FRAP assays as well as determination of total phenolic and flavonoid content. Three fractions were obtained after silica gel fractionation. The acetone-methanol fraction had the highest antioxidant activity with 81.06% DPPH radical inhibition and ferric reducing capacity of 1420.33 pM Fe2+ released, in comparison with ascorbic acid standard of 88.26% DPPH inhibition and ferric reducing activity of 502.038 ascorbic acid equivalents, respectively. The acetone-methanol fraction also contained the highest total phenolic and flavonoid content at 73.26 and to 55.11 μg/mL catechin equivalents, respectively. This demonstrates that the high antioxidant activity of the acetone-methanol fraction can be attributed to its high total phenolic and flavonoid content. Value could be added to calamansi waste peels by developing the peels extracts into products such as high antioxidant functional foods, or antioxidant dermal cream or ointments.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Chemistr
Perceived promoters and deterrents in the implementation of public-private partnership as governance innovation among local government units in the Province of Iloilo
Abstract onlyThis study was conducted to determine and explore the promoters and deterrents, and the extent of governance innovation in the implementation of a public-private partnership (PPP) among local government units (LGUs) in Iloilo Province. This study is a mixed-method - explanatory sequential design with pragmatism as the paradigm worldview. The target population consisted of the 42 LGUs and one component city of Iloilo Province, but the respondent population was the local chief executives and the planning coordinators, respectively. A three-part questionnaire was used to collect the data. A key informant interview (KII) was utilized to probe deeper into the quantitative findings. The study found that only 2 out of 43 local government units in the Province of Iloilo had both a PPP ordinance and project as mandated by MC No. 2016-120 “DILG Guidelines for the PPP Implementation.” Low compliance to this effect was observed. However, there were some LGUs that despite the lack of a PPP ordinance had engagement with the private sector, thus, a changing mindset toward more open and trusting governance was revealed in this study. Further, results indicated that the income classification of the LGUs and the lack of financial resources as a deterrent to PPP implementation were generally related. Also, the existence of PPP projects had a bearing on the extent of governance innovation. Overall, the extent of governance innovation in PPP implementation among LGUs was only innovatively- active. Findings revealed that it is likely due to local politics, unfavorable market factors, poor knowledge of PPP, a lack of PPP ordinance, and a lack of political skills, while good governance practices, strong market efficiency, and a stable institutional environment remain as promoters of PPP as governance innovation.Includes bibliographical referencesDoctor of Management (Public Management
Development of a flip book: A resource to develop organization skills for individuals with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
Abstract onlyThe purpose of this study was to develop a flip book as a resource material to improve the organization skills of individuals with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The developmental approach, more specifically the Input Process Output (IPO) Model, was the research design used to attain the objectives. An online semi-structured Key-Informant-Interview (Kll) was conducted through Google Meet, Zoom, and other available platforms for the participants. The interview was recorded through mobile device or laptop to encode the information easily. Thematic analysis was utilized in analyzing the data collected. Findings revealed three major themes that emerged from the participants’ narratives; namely: difficulties of individuals with ADHD in terms of organizational skills, experiences of SPED teachers in teaching organizational skills among individuals with ADHD, and experiences of parents in terms of instilling organizational skills among their children with ADHD. Hence, the developed flip book was designed based on the findings extracted from the gathered data. Consequently, this was evaluated and validated by three expert Special Education teachers using the researchers-made 4-point Likert scale. The evaluators strongly agreed that the flip book that the researchers developed is highly acceptable and can be used as a resource to develop the organizational skills for individuals with ADHD.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Special Needs Educatio
Level 1 wind risk assessment of heritage buildings at Central Philippine University
Abstract onlyThe philosophy, Scientia et Fides, of the 117-year-old Central Philippine University Campus is reflected in the 25 cultural heritage (CH) buildings included in this research. The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) has registered the said university as a Level 2 under the National Historical Landmark. Out of more than 100 buildings inside CPU's premises, 25 are considered CH buildings since they were built 50 years and above. The Rapid Visual Screening (RVS) form developed by the DLSU- Manila was adopted. Thus, a Level 1 Structural Wind Risk Assessment was conducted for the 25 CH buildings. Risk classifications were identified on each CH asset as low, medium, or high through the RVS instrument, including observing its hazard, risk, vulnerability, and other modifiers. The results revealed that out of the 25 CH buildings, 12 are at high risk, and 13 are determined to be medium risk. The process of how it was conducted was shown in the rest of the chapters of this study. A building information sheet was generated and included in this paper that provides a summary of the wind risk classifications for the CH buildings. Inscribing the year of construction on the building's facade and performing a regular rapid visual survey on the CH buildings are highly recommended for future studies to preserve its structural integrity and protect its occupants. Buildings with high wind risk indices are suggested to perform a Level 2 risk structural evaluation and must be monitored and modified with minimal alterations to preserve their cultural valueIncludes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Civil Engineerin
Design, fabrication, and testing of a bagging machine for the existing biomass fired batch type grains dryer in Barangay Badiangan, Ajuy, Iloilo
Abstract onlyAgricultural production such as corn has been one of the most abundant crops in the Philippines. Corn has become the most abundant crop of Brgy. Badiangan Ajuy. The specified barangay Badiangan is a beneficiary barangay of Central Philippine University - College of Engineering. The researchers aim to design, fabricate, and test a bagging machine to replace the manual bagging into an automatic grain bagging process of the existing biomass fired batch type flat-bed dryer in Barangay Badiangan, Ajuy, Iloilo. The researchers designed and fabricated a bagging machine using the suction created by a centrifugal blower for its conveying mechanism. The conveyed corn carried by the air suction produced by the blower is separated from the air in the cyclone separator using the principle of pressure difference which acts as density separation. The corn collected inside the cyclone separator is then bagged by the operators. The motor used for the machine produce a power output lesser than the calculated power due to financial constraints and the availability of electric motor that can produce the required power. The results of the testing showed that 1 sack of corn averages 5 minutes and 20 seconds to be bagged.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineerin
