Image segmentation and analysis of concrete cracks: A building safety evaluation system
Abstract onlyOne of the factors that determine a city to be highly urbanized is through its strong foundation of structural safety implementations. It demands for a well-established skills of structural specialists in maintaining the quality and reliability of these man-made structures. This study aims to understand and interpret information taken from captured images of concrete cracks. Specifically, it investigates collected images of concrete structure deformities by extracting pixel related details. In this relation, images contain useful features that convey every shades of color value intensities it displays. Known as the “Queen City of the South”, Iloilo City is popular for its Spanish colonial churches and old houses. Regular monitoring of buildings are often undertaken using traditional procedures such as visual inspection and manual recording, making it tedious in the long run. The need to develop a building safety evaluation system to aid in the systematic approach of performing the routine assessment of any structure. The methodology applied through Iterative Modeling was the segmentation of captured concrete crack images and categorized accordingly through clustering using Partitioning Around Medoids (PAM). By using a public dataset containing 20,000 observations to serve as training sets, the pixels extracted were classified by a formulated crack severity category (CSC) which were specified as cutoffs. Percentage values were calculated and those were below a certain light intensity threshold in a pixel were constituted to be part of a crack. Results have shown that k-medoids algorithm was able to minimize the distance between points labeled within a cluster as well as the distances between each of the clusters. These evidence in the results have dramatically decreased the false positives and misclassification of the images. Having known all the related features in the identification of concrete cracks can support building evaluators and regulatory organizations in maintaining and preserving the quality of building construction at the same time, it will encourage the conceptualization of new insights and recommend improvements for better decision making endeavors.Includes bibliographical referencesDoctor in Information Technolog

Intrapreneurship includes new business venturing, innovativeness, self-renewal and proactiveness dimensions while business performance includes financial and market performance. Survey data were collected from 162 MSME owners and managers from industries namely; manufacturing, wholesale, retail trade and repair services, accommodation/food services, financial and insurance services, and other services. Results confirmed that there was a positive correlation between intrapreneurship and business performance. A significant difference was detected in the level of innovativeness when MSMEs were grouped according to type of business. Majority of the MSMEs were operating between 5 to 14 years and mostly were micro enterprises and sole proprietorship. Marketing and operations activities were very highly practiced by enterprises. Support from other concerned entities was highest-rated in comparison with partnership with academe and government support. The highest mean score for proactiveness indicated a high level of intrapreneurship. Medium enterprises and those in business operation for 45 years and more had very high market performance. Based on the findings of the financial research, MSMEs had favorable financial performance from 2015 to 2019. The strong returns on sales, assets, and equity were indicators that businesses were performing well. Additionally, they were able to pay their present debts due, and assets were mostly financed by owners’ equity rather than liabilities from creditors. The focus group discussion provided more evidence that businesses were viable. Results were presented to MSME owners in order to discuss potential collaboration between governmental agencies, academic institutions, private businesses, and MSMEs. To encourage an intrapreneurship culture within the organization, where creativity and innovation can be fostered for the enhancement of business performance, an efficient and successful intrapreneurship program was recommended.Includes bibliographical referencesDoctor of Management (Business Management

Factors associated with the compliance to Ecological Solid Waste Management Act 2000 (RA 9003) of inland resort establishments in the Province of Iloilo: Inputs to policy enhancement
Journal articleSolid waste management (SWM) is a crucial problem that needs to be addressed. In support, this correlational study determined factors associated with compliance to RA 9003 among 118 respondents from 23 inland resorts in the province of Iloilo taken by total enumeration. Cross tabulation, means, frequency counts, and percentages determined the demographics, level of awareness, extent of public participation, level of available resources, extent of enforcement, and extent of compliance to RA 9003 of inland resorts. Significant association was determined using Gamma coefficient while partial correlation determined the correlations between awareness, public participation, available resources, and enforcement and compliance. Majority of inland resorts were micro enterprises with 1 to 9 staff, less than 10 rooms, and two recreational facilities that had been open for less than 5 years and were not DOT accredited. Inland resorts were highly aware of RA 9003, with a high extent of participation, with a high level of available resources, and a high extent of enforcement and compliance to RA 9003. It is concluded that Public participation is strongly correlated with awareness, resources and enforcement while awareness is moderately correlated with resources and enforcement. However, enforcement is moderately correlated with resources and awareness but strongly correlated with participation and resources. Moreover, compliance is significantly correlated with enforcement and available resources but not with awareness and participation, and awareness, participation, resources, and enforcement are not predictors of compliance to RA 9003
Hover over the signal: Emergency wi-fi signal transmitter and repeater with messaging application
Abstract onlyThe focus of this research was to design, construct, and test an emergency Wi-Fi signal transmitter and repeater with a messaging app. Two NodeMCU Microcontrollers with ESP8266 Wi-Fi modules and two drones make up the system. The Wi-Fi module units on the microcontroller will be the source of Wi-Fi networks identified by smart devices. The two drones in flight, which have an average flight period of 5 to 10 minutes, are attached to and are carrying these microcontrollers. Drones equipped with microcontrollers were used to expand each microcontroller's range of communication. The main source code or program is on one microcontroller, while the repeater is on the other. All devices must connect to the Wi-Fi signal either from the repeater or the main program. If connected, the users can communicate using the developed messaging application. In the developed messaging application, the users are required to put a name or alias that they can change anytime. A function was also added to delete or clear past messages. The overall system exhibited normal operations and the data gathered conformed to the functionality, where the transmitter, repeater, and messaging application operated their functions properly. Based on the results of the reliability test, the range of the distance from the user to the microcontroller is 30 meters. The farther the distance of the user to the microcontroller, the slower the message is sent to the receiving device. Overall, the system has met the requirements for reliability and functionality.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Electronics Engineerin
COD reduction in sugar mill effluent and methane production using upflow an aerobic sludge fixed-film digestion
Abstract onlyThis study was conducted to design and construct an Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Fixed-Film Digester and to determine the effectiveness of digesting sugar mill effluents by anaerobic digestion. The results were compared to the current Ponding process of POME in terms of percent COD removal, COD retained, and COD removed in each HRT cycle (1.5 days), and to determine the presence of methane. The UASFF digester was designed to utilize the sugar mill effluent by maintaining a pH level of 6.8, the Hydraulic Retention Time (HRT) at 36 hours or 1.5 days, and a flow rate of 2.2 mL/min for optimal digestion process throughout the study. Results showed that the digester was able to purify at least 4L of effluent at the HRT of 36
hours. At HRT 7, the percent COD removal reached the highest of around 81.87%. As for the lowest, the 1st HRT cycle excluding the 0th HRT cycle has a value of 58.27%. The effect was minimal despite the increasing COD removal and stabilizing at around 80%. The presence of methane was determined to be present with the use of a gas tester.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Chemical Engineerin
