Life and experiences during Martial Law in the Philippines: A qualitative case study
Abstract onlyThis study aimed to explore and understand the life and experiences of the faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences department of Central Philippine University during Martial Law in the Philippines using a qualitative case study design. The participants of the study were six (6) members of the faculty, who were selected using snowball method; out of five (5) to ten (10) required participants for a qualitative case study. An in-depth interview using probing questions that lasted for thirty (30) minutes to almost an hour was conducted. The descriptive data was processed using Braun and Clark’s six-step reflexive thematic analysis. The study established its validity and reliability by credibility, conformability, dependability, and transferability of the data. The study was able to formulate five (5) main themes which were: (1) Suppression of Political Dissent, (2) Suspension of Civil Rights, (3) Expansion of Military Power, (4) Suppression of Activist Groups and Organizations and, (5) Human Rights Violation. The first theme discussed the widespread rebellion during Martial law. The second theme tackled the strict curfews and checkpoints and curtailment of freedom of speech, press and assembly. The third theme talked about warrantless arrests and abuse of authority. The fourth theme conversed about activist groups advocating for social justice, peace and democracy. Lastly, the fifth theme discussed the enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings during Martial Law in the Philippines. The life course theory emphasizes the importance of considering individual life trajectories, social contexts and historical events in shaping people’s lives. The interpretative phenomenological analysis also supported this study as it provided detailed examination of the participants life and experiences.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Arts in Political Science and Public Administratio
Lived through the flames: Stories of resilience among fire survivors in rural areas
Abstract onlyThis study explored the resilience stories of rural residential fire survivors in Iloilo through a narrative inquiry approach. The study also explored the narrative structure, tone, and genre of the narratives. A sample of three respondents was purposefully selected through a screening procedure. The participants had to be active residents of rural districts of Iloilo, experienced a fire incident, aged 25 and above, had stable and safe living conditions, had the fire incident occur at least five years prior to 2023, had been conversational, and strongly agreed that they were resilient. The study used the "Telling" and the "Told" by Mishler, McAdam’s narrative tone, Gergen and Gergen’s narrative structure, and Frye’s narrative genre classification, and thematic analysis by Braun and Clarke for interpretating, coding, and categorizing data for narrative themes. Preliminary investigation included screening based on demographics and obtaining informed consent. Researchers conducted face-to-face interviews, guided by open-ended questions, and analyzed the data using QDA Miner Lite software. The study revealed diverse narrative structures, tones, and genres, reflecting the richness and complexity of resilience experiences. Overall, the stories followed the progressive structure, optimistic tone, and romantic genre. Thematic analysis of three interviews revealed core narratives and themes, indicating that resilience stories were worth sharing and that survival journeys varied, influenced by individual and contextual factors. Further results revealed five core themes termed stories of rural roots, stories of inexpressible pain, stories of inside warmth, stories of anchored strength, and stories of aspiration.Bachelor of Science in Psycholog

The effect of mental health education training on students' geography performance
Abstract onlyThis study aimed to determine the effect of mental health education training on students' performance in Geography. In this study, a quasi-experimental research method employing a pre-test and post-test control group design was adopted. Participants in the study were geography majors at a college in Guiyang, Guizhou Province chosen through random sample of freshmen in the same class. The study involved two groups of 15 students -- one group with mental health education training lasting six weeks, and the other group without mental health education training. In this study, the experimental group was trained in mental health education. This included group activities and discussions, case studies, and training in stress management skills. A set of geography test paper was provided to compare the results of geography test between the experimental group and the control group. The students' performance in geography were tested using the geography test. Descriptive statistical analysis included the mean and standard deviation. In the inferential analysis, t-test for independent samples, t-test for correlated samples and One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) were used. The level of significance was set at 0.05 and was used as a criterion for accepting or rejecting the hypotheses. The results of the study are as follows: After the experimental group the Effect of Mental Health Education Training on Students' Geography received mental health education, the test results showed significant changes, which meant that the test changes in the experimental group were significant. The control group did not receive mental health education, and there was no statistical difference in the pretest rand posttest scores of the participants. However, there were significant differences between the mean gain of the control group and the mean gain of the experimental group, which means that mental health education had an impact on students' test results. Taken together, mental health education has a positive impact on students' test results.Includes bibliographical referencesDoctor of Education major in Guidance and Counselin
Biochemical effect of lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) emulsified concentrate on the antibodies and blood biochemistry of native chickens challenged with Mycoplasma gallisepticum
Abstract onlyMycoplasma gallisepticum is considered a disease of economic importance among the native chicken. It can be prevented and controlled by commercially available antibiotics, but it may lead to resistance to the pathogen's continuous use. Finding a natural source but equally potent antibiotic in controlling this pathogen is a must. Thus, this study was conducted to determine the influence of Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) emulsified concentrate on Mycoplasma gallisepticum-infected native chicken in terms of the development of antibodies and enhancement of blood biochemistry before and after two weeks of post-exposure. The collected blood of experimental chickens was analyzed using the ELISA microplate reader and biochemistry analyzer. These actual recorded data were presented for analysis and discussion. The result from the study indicated that it did not influence the presence of the antibodies of native chickens, with only three samples increased out of nine samples after being treated with Lemongrass emulsified concentrate, while the biochemical components of native chickens increased the availability of cholesterol, triglycerides, albumin, and total protein. The uric acid, glucose, aspartate transaminase, alanine transaminase, and creatinine recorded significant reductions in the blood levels. Hence, the use of Lemongrass emulsified concentrate on Mycoplasma gallisepticum-infected native chickens significantly affects the biochemical component of the blood only.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Agricultur

Level of awareness, knowledge, and preventive measures on cholera among selected households in a selected Barangay in Iloilo City Proper
Abstract onlyCholera remains a significant public health concern globally, necessitating comprehensive understanding and effective preventive measures. This study aimed to assess the level of awareness, knowledge, and preventive measures regarding Cholera among selected households in Iloilo City Proper, Philippines. This study utilized a descriptive-correlational research design, 50 household heads from Barangay Tanza, Iloilo City Proper were randomly selected. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire, covering the participants’ demographic characteristics, level of awareness, knowledge, and preventive measures against Cholera. Chi-square analysis was used to determine correlations between participant characteristics and study variables. Most respondents demonstrated average awareness and knowledge about Cholera, with variations in preventive measures adoption. Demographic characteristics like age, sex, educational attainment, and occupation did not significantly influence awareness or knowledge. However, occupation and level of awareness significantly influenced the adoption of preventive measures. Household heads in Barangay Tanza, Iloilo City, were mostly young, female, and college graduates, with 80% being employed. Cholera awareness was average, knowledge was adequate, and the majority practiced preventive measures regularly. Demographics like age, gender, education, and occupation didn't significantly impact awareness or knowledge. Awareness correlated strongly with preventive measures, while knowledge showed a negative correlation, suggesting less knowledgeable individuals were less likely to adopt preventive behaviors. These findings should guide local health programs, inform policy development at the Department of Health, and promote collaboration among health and educational institutions, while future research could broaden its scope to include additional variables for greater relevance. The socio-cultural impacts of Sulay-Basya Festival among local residents at a certain Municipality in Iloilo
Full text availableThis paper represents the Socio-Cultural Impact of Sulay-Basya Festival among its Local Residents. The concept of the socio-cultural impact of festivals on local residents presents different kind of pictures. Festivals applied variety of socio-cultural impacts on local-residents: Ethnicity, Knowledge, Religious Beliefs, Tradition, and Values. Although supportive evidence exists, contradictions related to costs, diverse resident perceptions, and potential environmental implications emphasize the complexity of festival impacts. These impacts are context-dependent, shaped by factors such as age, duration of residence, sex, social class, time span of participation in the festival, and type of community stakeholder. The researchers, applied a quantitative descriptive research design. The respondents in study were 397 local-residents who were voluntarily available during the conduct of the study. The non-probability, accidental or convenience sampling method was also utilized for ensuring that the respondents were fairly represented. Religious affiliation showed a notable impact, with a significant difference in the type of community stakeholder among different religious groups, suggesting that religious beliefs influence how individuals perceive and engage with local events like the festival. This suggests that religious beliefs have a discernible influence on how individuals perceive and engage with local events like the Sulay-Basya Festival. Therefore, the null hypothesis that there are no significant differences in the socio-cultural impact of the festival among local-residents based on religious affiliation is rejected. It is clear from the observed significant differences that religious beliefs have a significant influence on how people view the world and engage in community activities. This emphasizes how important it is to take religious diversity into account when analyzing community dynamics and participation in cultural events.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Tourism Managemen
