    Cognitive Dissonance and the Image Pesantren in Pekalongan: A Study Using Mixed Methods Approach

    News coverage of violence in pesantren has increased. The news coverage should have made the image of pesantren hostile, and the number of students decreased. However, pesantren and Santri in Pekalongan Regency have experienced a significant increase. This study aimed to analyze the community in overcoming cognitive dissonance when sending their children to pesantren and to analyze the exposure to negative news on parents' interest in sending their children to pesantren through the intervening variable of the image of pesantren. The theory used is cognitive dissonance. The research methodology uses a post-positivistic paradigm with a mixed methods approach. The population was 976,504 people, and a sample of 475 respondents with a simple random technique. The data collection method used surveys and in-depth interviews. The study's results showed that the community could reduce cognitive dissonance; they considered pesantren the safest places to deepen religious knowledge, train independence, and make many friends. Parents assume that not all pesantren experience physical violence and sexual violence. The second research result is that the influence of mass media exposure on parents' request to send their children to pesantren is minimal, only 7.29%. In comparison, the image of pesantren influences parents' interest in sending their children to pesantren by 26.21%. Together, mass media exposure and the image of pesantren influence parents' interest in sending their children to pesantren by 34.8%. Meanwhile, mass media exposure does not affect parents' interest in sending their children to pesantren through the intervening variable of pesantren image. Pemberitaan kekerasan di pesantren meningkat. Pemberitaan membuat citra pesantren harusnya menjadi negatif dan jumlah Santri berkurang. Akan tetapi, pesantren dan Santri di Kabupaten Pekalongan mengalami peningkatan signifikan. Tujuan penelitian ini menganalisis masyarakat dalam mengatasi disonansi kognitif saat memondokkan anaknya di pesantren dan menganalisis terpaan pemberitaan negatif terhadap minat orang tua memondokkan anaknya di pesantren melalui variabel intervening citra pesantren. Teori yang digunakan adalah disonansi kognitif. Metodologi penelitian menggunakan paradigma post-positivistik dengan pendekatan mixed methods. Populasi sejumlah 976.504 masyarakat dan sampel 475 responden dengan teknik random sederhana. Metode pengambilan data menggunakan survei dan wawancara mendalam. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan masyarakat dapat mengurangi disonansi kognitif, mereka menganggap bahwa pondok pesantren adalah tempat yang paling aman untuk memperdalam ilmu agama, melatih kemandirian dan memperoleh banyak teman. Orang tua beranggapan tidak semua pesantren terjadi kekerasan fisik dan kekerasan seksual. Hasil penelitian yang kedua yaitu pengaruh terpaan media massa terhadap minat orang tua memondokkan anak di pesantren sangat kecil hanya 7,29% sedangkan citra pesantren memberikan pengaruh terhadap minat orang tua memondokkan anak di pesantren sebesar 26,21%. Secara bersama-sama terpaan media massa dan citra pondok memberikan pengaruh sebesar 34,8% terhadap minat orang tua memondokkan anak di pesantren. Sedangkan terpaan media massa tidak memberikan pengaruh terhadap minat orang tua memondokkan anak di pesantren melalui variabel intervening citra pesantren

    The Role of Tafsīr Maqāṣidī in Contemporary Qur'anic Studies: An Analysis of Research at MIAT UIN Sunan Kalijaga

    The study of the Qur'an in Indonesia is currently undergoing significant transformations to maintain the relevance of its teachings in a modern context. The State Islamic University (UIN) Sunan Kalijaga, particularly the Master's Program in Qur'anic Studies and Interpretation (MIAT), has developed a new approach called tafsīr maqāṣidī, introduced by Abdul Mustaqim in 2019. This approach emphasizes understanding the objectives and principles of Sharia behind the Qur'anic text, allowing for interpretations that are more responsive to contemporary issues. This research aims to critically evaluate the application of tafsīr maqāṣidī in the theses of MIAT students at UIN Sunan Kalijaga, focusing on the depth, consistency, and quality of the interpretations, as well as identifying their strengths and weaknesses. The research question posed is: How does the application of tafsīr maqāṣidī enrich Qur'anic studies, and what challenges are faced in its implementation? The methodology used is a qualitative approach applying the reader-response theory, which asserts that the meaning of a text is formed through the interaction between the text and its readers. Analysis of various theses shows that tafsīr maqāṣidī enriches Qur'anic studies by linking the sacred text with contemporary issues such as the environment, governance, and social problems. However, limitations were found in the mastery of Arabic, ushul fiqh (principles of Islamic jurisprudence), classical Islamic texts (turāth), and engagement with contemporary studies, which affect the quality of interpretations. This research impacts a more comprehensive understanding of the application of tafsīr maqāṣidī and identifies areas that need improvement. Recommendations are provided to strengthen competencies in these areas so that tafsīr maqāṣidī can continue to develop and contribute significantly to Qur'anic studies in Indonesia. Studi Al-Qur'an di Indonesia kini mengalami transformasi signifikan untuk menjaga relevansi ajarannya dalam konteks modern. UIN Sunan Kalijaga, khususnya Program Magister Ilmu Al-Qur'an dan Tafsir (MIAT), telah mengembangkan pendekatan baru yaitu tafsīr maqāṣidī yang diperkenalkan oleh Abdul Mustaqim pada 2019. Pendekatan ini menekankan pemahaman tujuan dan prinsip syariah di balik teks Al-Qur'an, memungkinkan interpretasi yang lebih responsif terhadap isu-isu kontemporer. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengevaluasi kritis penerapan tafsīr maqāṣidī dalam tesis-tesis mahasiswa MIAT UIN Sunan Kalijaga, dengan fokus pada kedalaman, konsistensi, dan kualitas penafsiran, serta mengidentifikasi kekuatan dan kelemahannya. Metode yang digunakan adalah pendekatan kualitatif dengan menerapkan teori tanggapan pembaca (reader-response theory), yang menegaskan bahwa makna teks terbentuk melalui interaksi antara teks dan pembacanya. Analisis terhadap berbagai tesis menunjukkan bahwa tafsīr maqāṣidī memperkaya kajian Al-Qur'an dengan mengaitkan teks suci dengan isu-isu seperti lingkungan, tata kelola pemerintahan, dan masalah sosial. Namun, ditemukan keterbatasan dalam penguasaan bahasa Arab, ushul fiqh, kitab turāth, dan keterlibatan dengan kajian kontemporer, yang mempengaruhi kualitas penafsiran. Penelitian ini berdampak pada pemahaman lebih komprehensif tentang penerapan tafsīr maqāṣidī dan mengidentifikasi area yang perlu ditingkatkan. Rekomendasi diberikan untuk memperkuat kompetensi di bidang-bidang tersebut agar tafsīr maqāṣidī dapat terus berkembang dan berkontribusi signifikan dalam studi Al-Qur'an di Indonesia

    DESCENT RENEWAL AND SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION IN THE PERSPECTIVE OF ISLAMIC EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY

    This research aims to examine the urgency and strategy of hereditary renewal and sustainable environmental conservation in the perspective of Islamic educational psychology to form a strong Islamic character. Using a qualitative method of literature study with primary source analysis, this research identifies that individual development is influenced by fitrah (innate potential), heredity, and environment (family, school, community). The results show that Islamic educational psychology plays a central role through internalization of values from an early age, the formation of an Islamic educational environment, habituation of positive behavior, alignment of faith-science-amal, optimization of the role of parents and teachers, use of productive technology, and evaluation and counseling. This strategy is expected to give birth to a smart generation, strong in faith and morals, and able to become agents of change for the realization of Islamic civilization

    Philosophical Study of Universal Rights (HAAS) and Human Rights (HAM): Exegesis of Al-'Ālamīn's Concept in the Al-Qur'ān

    This paper is intended to explore the holistic philosophy of al-ʿālamīn in al-Qur’an as the basis for Universal Rights, Hak Asasi Alam Semesta (HAAS), for the lack of comprehensiveness of Human Rights, Hak Asasi Manusia (HAM), which tends to be anthropocentric-materialistic-secularistic. This research is qualitative research relying on the literature review method. The analytical tool used in this research is the Hermeneutical-philosophical paradigm of human rights and international law contained in the al-ʿālamīn concept. Al-ʿālamīn, God Sustainer of Humans, has been, is, will always be translated and interpreted with the embodiment in the form of Human Rights. Not only human rights, it also needs to be conceptualized and implemented in the discourse of Universal Rights where God is the Custodian of the Universe. HAM does not necessitate human religiosity. It is just the fulfillment of human rights to one creature, named human. HAAS, in addition to fulfilling human rights religiously and spiritually, is also primarily a blessing for the universe, including the fulfillment of human rights for all forms of natural resources, such as plants, animals, jinn, earth, planets, galaxies and so on. Therefore, the five main things that make up maqashid al-shari'ah, namely protecting religion, soul, lineage, property and mind, which have an anthropocentric tendency, become more holistic when fulfilled by protecting the universe, hifz al-ʿālamīn. Tulisan ini dimaksudkan untuk mengeksplorasi filosofi holistik al-ʿālamīn dalam al-Qur'an sebagai dasar Hak Asasi Universal, Hak Asasi Alam Semesta (HAAS) karena kurang komprehensifnya Hak Asasi Manusia (HAM) yang cenderung antroposentris-materialistik-sekularistik. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif yang mengandalkan metode kajian pustaka. Alat analisis yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah paradigma hermeneutika-filosofis hak asasi manusia dan hukum internasional yang terkandung dalam konsep al-'ālamīn. Al-'Ālamīn, Tuhan Pemelihara Manusia, telah, sedang, dan akan selalu diterjemahkan dan ditafsirkan, dengan pengejawantahannya dalam bentuk HAM. Tidak hanya HAM, HAM juga perlu dikonseptualisasikan dan diimplementasikan dalam wacana HAAS, Tuhan Pemelihara Alam Semesta. HAM tidak mengharuskan adanya religiusitas manusia. HAM hanyalah pemenuhan hak asasi manusia terhadap satu makhluk, yaitu manusia. HAI, selain memenuhi hak asasi manusia secara religius dan spiritual, juga utamanya adalah menjadi rahmat bagi alam semesta, termasuk pemenuhan hak asasi manusia terhadap segala bentuk sumber daya alam, seperti tumbuhan, hewan, jin, bumi, planet-planet, galaksi, dan lain sebagainya. Oleh karena itu, lima hal utama yang membentuk maqashid al-syari'ah, yaitu menjaga agama, jiwa, nasab, harta, dan akal, yang memiliki kecenderungan antroposentris, menjadi lebih holistik ketika dipenuhi dengan menjaga alam semesta, hifz al-ʿālamīn

    Nidā’ Al-Qur’an: A Study of the Manuscript of Tafsīr Yā Ayyuha Al-Lażīna Āmanū by Shaykh Abdul Latief Syakur 20th Century

    The study of the Qur’anic nidā' is important to understand and master and distinguish the khitab to whom the call is addressed and what the meaning or essence of the call is conveyed. The purpose of this study is to explore and find the context of the call (nidā'), khitāb and mukhātab addressed in Tafsīr Yā Ayyuha Al-Lażīna Āmanū. This article theoretically and methodologically has an important role in the study of al-Qur'anic sciences and tafsir. This research is a library research with philological method with philosophical historical approach and analyzed with descriptive analysis model. The findings in this study indicate that there are three contexts addressed in the existence of nidā' verses. First, nidā' verses whose mukhātab clearly refer to individuals. Second, nidā' verses refer to a particular community either in general or in particular. Thirdly, nidā' verses whose mukhātab refers to a particular community either generally or specifically. Of all the nidā' in this tafsir, the khitab nidā' are categorized into five: nidā' related to the relationship between man and God; nidā' related to the relationship between the believing servant and the Prophet Muhammad; nidā' related to the relationship between people and their families; and nidā' related to the relationship between believers and disbelievers and disobedient people. Kajian nidā’ al-Qur’an penting dilakukan guna memahami dan menguasai serta membedakan khitab kepada siapa seruan itu ditujukan dan apa makna atau esensi seruan tersebut disampaikan. Adapun tujuan penelitian ini untuk menggali dan menemukan konteks seruan (nidā’), khitāb dan mukhātab yang dituju dalam Tafsīr Yā Ayyuha Al-Lażīna Āmanū. Artikel ini secara teoritis dan metodologis memiliki peran penting dalam studi ilmu-ilmu al-Qur’an dan tafsir. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian kepustakaan (Library Reseach) dengan motode filologi dengan pendekatan historis filosofis dan dianalisa dengan model deskriptif-analisis (descriptive analysis). Temuan dalam penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ada tiga konteks yang dituju pada eksistensi ayat-ayat nidā’. Pertama, ayat-ayat nidā’ yang mukhātabnya jelas merujuk kepada individu. Kedua, ayat-ayat nidā’ mengacu pada komunitas tertentu baik secara umum atau khusus. Ketiga, ayat-ayat nidā' yang tujuan mukhātabnya masih menimbulkan penafsiran tentang siapa sebenarnya yang dimaksud. Dari keseluruhan nidā' dalam tafsir ini, khitab nidā’nya dikelompokkan menjadi lima, yakni nidā’ yang terkait hubungan antara manusia dan Tuhan; nidā’ yang terkait antara hamba yang beriman dengan Nabi Muhammad; nidā’ yang terkait dengan antara orang dengan keluarga mereka; dan nidā’ yang terkait antara orang beriman dengan orang kafir dan durhaka

    Khataman Ṣaḥīh Bukhārī by PCNU Jombang (A Study of Living Hadith)

    This research aims to analyze the social actions that occur during the Ṣaḥīh Bukhārī khatam event organized by the Jombang branch of Nahdlatul Ulama (PCNU). The study adopts Max Weber's perspective on social action as its analytical approach, using four of his theories: traditional, affective, rationality, and value orientation. The research methodology used is qualitative, with interviews as the data collection method. Additionally, a literature review is conducted to uncover historical data on the tradition of khatam Ṣaḥīh Bukhārī in Islam and the opinions of scholars (ulama). The research findings indicate that the Ṣaḥīh Bukhārī khatam activities of PCNU Jombang continue to exist due to four factors. First, these activities are a manifestation of the respect and preservation of traditions practiced by scholars in Islam and the NU organization itself. Second, the activities can evoke emotional responses from the participants because they share a common goal and are influenced by the presence of respected religious leaders (Kyai) who contribute to the emotional atmosphere. Third, the activities are consistently carried out because the participants possess the capacity to engage in them rationally. Fourth, all participants believe that these activities hold significant and beneficial values, which are highly anticipated by everyone involved. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis tindakan sosial yang terjadi dalam acara Khataman Ṣaḥīh Bukhārī yang diselenggarakan oleh Pengurus Cabang Nahdlatul Ulama (PCNU) Jombang. Penelitian ini mengadopsi perspektif Max Weber tentang tindakan sosial sebagai pendekatan analisisnya dengan empat teorinya yaitu, tradisional, afektif, rasionalitas, dan orientasi nilai. Metode penelitian yang digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data adalah metode kualitatif dengan wawancara dan dokumentasi. Selain itu, kajian literatur juga dilakukan untuk mengungkap data sejarah dari tradisi Khataman kitab Ṣaḥīh Bukhārī dalam Islam dan pendapat ‘ulama. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kegiatan Khataman Ṣaḥīh Bukhārī PCNU Jombang selalu eksis karena empat faktor. Pertama, kegiatan ini merupakan wujud dari penghormatan dan pelestarian tradisi-tradisi yang dilakukan ‘Ulama dalam Islam dan organisasi NU sendiri. Kedua, kegiatan ini dapat menyentuh rasa emosional para pesertanya karena memiliki sebuah tujuan yang sama serta adanya figur kyai yang juga berperan dalam membentuk rasa emosional tersebut. Ketiga, kegiatan ini selalu dilaksanakan karena secara rasional para pesertanya memiliki kapasitas dalam menjalankannya.     This journal discusses the role and strategy of optimizing preaching (dakwah) through social media, particularly in the context of the millennial generation. The modern era, dominated by social media, compels speakers to adapt preaching methods to be more effective and relevant. The goal of preaching remains to ensure understanding and implementation of religious teachings by the audience (mad'u). This literature study employs a descriptive analysis approach with a focus on social media as the main tool for preaching. Social media facilitates two-way interaction, accelerates message dissemination, and fosters creativity in delivering religious content. Optimizing preaching is achieved through the utilization of information and communication technology, especially through mass media and social media. The influence of Islam on social media emphasizes the importance of ijtihad (independent reasoning) by preachers in adapting Islamic messages to formats suitable for these platforms. The article also highlights the challenges of preaching in the modern era, particularly in addressing the communication preferences and lifestyles of the millennial generation, who tend to be online. By integrating religious messages with social media platforms, preaching can reach a broader and more diverse audience without geographical limitations. In conclusion, the optimal approach to preaching in the current era requires mastery of social media as the primary means of disseminating religious messages, especially to reach the millennial generation, which is the main focus in this digital age

    Internalization of Religious Character through Qur’an Extracurricular Activities

    This study examines the internalization of students’ religious character through the LPQ (Al-Qur’an Education Institution) extracurricular program at SMP N 1 Sungai Penuh. The program emphasizes comprehensive planning encompassing clear objectives, structured activity design, management responsibilities, scheduling, and appropriate learning environments to develop students’ competencies in reading, writing, memorizing, and applying the Qur’an. Classes are organized according to students’ proficiency levels, enabling teachers to align instructional complexity with individual learning capacities effectively. The implementation follows a systematic three-stage process: preparation, execution, and closure. Educators employ diverse instructional strategies, including halaqah sessions, memorization exercises, practical worship activities, and interactive educational games, to actively engage students while reinforcing Qur’anic values. Sessions commence with prayers and motivational activities to foster mental and spiritual readiness. Closure activities, encompassing evaluations, question-and-answer sessions, and reflective exercises, strengthen students’ ethical conduct, discipline, and spiritual responsibility. Findings reveal measurable improvements in students’ religious attitudes, Qur’anic reading proficiency, memorization skills, and participation in religious practices. The study demonstrates that structured, well-planned, and consistently executed extracurricular programs are effective in cultivating students’ moral, spiritual, and ethical development, fostering disciplined, responsible, and pious individuals

    The Concept of Raḍā'ah in Tafsīr al-Munīr by Wahbah al-Zuḥailī

    The objective of this research is to investigate the concept of raḍā'ah as delineated in Wahbah al-Zuḥailī's Tafsir Al-Munīr, particularly with respect to Qur'anic verses found in Surah Al-Ṭalāq [65]: 6, Al-Nisā' [4]: 24, Al-Baqarah [2]: 233, and Al-Qaṣaṣ [28]: The research employs a qualitative approach, utilizing content analysis to delve into and evaluate Wahbah al-Zuḥailī's comprehension of the concept of raḍā'ah. The primary data source for this investigation comprises Wahbah al-Zuḥailī's interpretations within his tafsir that are pertinent to the concept of raḍā'ah. Findings from this study illuminate the dialectical nature of the understanding of raḍā'ah as expounded by Wahbah al-Zuḥailī in Tafsir Al-Munīr, shedding light on the interpretations and emphases accorded to the concept within the context of the specified verses. There are three important aspects of Wahbah's interpretation. Firstly, Wahbah emphasizes the importance of moral and social responsibility. In his exegesis, Wahbah explains that raḍā’ah is a moral and social obligation for parents towards their children, which must be fulfilled without exception. Secondly, Wahbah demonstrates his expertise in applying comparative rationality. This research aims to offer a more profound insight into Wahbah al-Zuḥailī's portrayal and comprehension of the concept of raḍā'ah in his work, and to delineate its significance in shaping the broader comprehension of the Qur'ān.  Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi konsep raḍā’ah dalam tafsir Al-Munīr karya Wahbah al-Zuḥailī, dengan mengacu pada ayat-ayat Al-Qur’an yang terdapat dalam Surah Al-Ṭalāq [65]: 6, Al-Nisā’ [4]: 24, Al-Baqarah [2]: 233, dan Al-Qaṣaṣ [28]: 7 dan 12. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah kualitatif dengan menggunakan analisis konten sebagai alat untuk mengeksplorasi dan menganalisis pemahaman Wahbah al-Zuḥailī terhadap konsep raḍā’ah. Data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah penafsiran Wahbah al-Zuḥailī dalam tafsirnya yang berkaitan dengan konsep raḍā’ah. Hasil dari penelitian ini menggambarkan dialektika dalam pemahaman raḍā’ah yang disajikan oleh Wahbah al-Zuḥailī dalam tafsir Al-Munīr, dengan menyoroti interpretasi dan penekanan yang diberikan terhadap konsep tersebut dalam konteks ayat-ayat yang dipilih. Terdapat tiga aspek penting dari penafisran Wahbah yakni Pertama, Wahbah menekankan pentingnya tanggung jawab moral dan sosial. Dalam tafsirnya, Wahbah menjelaskan bahwa raḍā’ah merupakan kewajiban moral dan sosial bagi orang tua terhadap anak-anaknya, yang harus dipenuhi tanpa terkecuali. Kedua, Wahbah menunjukkan keahliannya dalam menerapkan rasionalitas perbandingan. Penelitian ini diharapkan dapat memberikan pemahaman yang lebih mendalam tentang bagaimana konsep raḍā’ah dipahami dan disajikan oleh Wahbah al-Zuḥailī dalam karyanya, serta kontribusinya terhadap pemahaman umum terhadap Al-Qur’an
