INTEGRATING AUTHENTIC MATERIALS TO ENHANCE LISTENING COMPREHENSION: EVIDENCE FROM SECONDARY EFL CLASSROOMS IN INDONESIA
This study aims to examine the effect of using authentic materials on the listening skills of tenth-grade students at SMAN 1 Kamang Magek. The research was motivated by students’ difficulty in understanding spoken English due to limited exposure to the language used in real-life contexts. A quasi-experimental design was employed, involving two groups: an experimental class taught using authentic materials and a control class taught using conventional methods. Each group consisted of 27 students and underwent four instructional meetings. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests, then analyzed using SPSS with the Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney tests. The results revealed that the use of authentic materials significantly improved students' listening skills. This was evident from the higher post-test scores of the experimental group compared to the control group. The findings suggest that authentic materials not only enhance listening comprehension but also expose learners to real-life English usage, including accent, intonation, and contextual meaning. It is therefore recommended that teachers incorporate authentic materials into their teaching to better prepare students for real-world communication.Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menguji pengaruh penggunaan otentik terhadap kemampuan menyimak pada siswa kelas X SMAN 1 Kamang Magek. Latar belakang penelitian ini adalah kesulitan siswa dalam memahami audio yang mereka dengarkan karena terbatasnya paparan bahasa yang digunakan dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain kuasi-eksperimental dengan dua kelompok: kelas eksperimen yang diajar dengan menggunakan materi otentik dan kelas kontrol yang diajar dengan metode konvensional. Data diperoleh melalui pre-test dan post-test, yang dianalisis menggunakan perangkat lunak SPSS dengan uji Wilcoxon dan Mann Whitney. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan materi otentik secara signifikan meningkatkan kemampuan mendengarkan siswa, yang dapat dilihat dari nilai post-test kelas eksperimen yang lebih tinggi. skor post-test kelas eksperimen yang lebih tinggi dibandingkan dengan kelas kontrol. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa penggunaan materi otentik dalam pembelajaran bahasa secara efektif dapat meningkatkan pemahaman menyimak siswa serta memberikan pengalaman belajar yang lebih menarik. Oleh karena itu, guru disarankan untuk menggunakan materi otentik dalam proses pembelajaran agar siswa lebih siap untuk berkomunikasi di dunia nyata
EFL LEARNERS’ ABILITY OF DEFINITE AND INDEFINITE ARTICLES: A STUDY OF FIRST-YEAR ENGLISH EDUCATION STUDENTS IN INDONESIA
EFL learners in Indonesia have learned to use English articles since they started learning English. However, English articles pose significant challenges for Indonesian EFL learners due to the absence of articles in Bahasa Indonesia, abstract and complex usage rules, and overgeneralization and transfer errors. This study examines the ability of first-year EFL learners in the English Education Department at UMMY Solok (academic year 2024/2025) in using definite and indefinite articles. Using a descriptive quantitative design, 10 first-year students from English Education Department at UMMY Solok were assessed by using a validated 40-item grammar test. Although the sample was limited, the study offers preliminary insights since it was an exploratory or early stage research. The results revealed that the students’ proficiency level in using both definite and indefinite articles were at good level. The findings suggest that students have a functional understanding of the basic usage of articles. Students likely demonstrate awareness of noun classification and contextual usage, which are key to article use. This study contributes to curriculum development by highlighting the importance of gradual, context-based instruction in teaching English articles. Furthermore, it recommends that future researches should examine article usage in students’ academic writing across genres or proficiency levels
IS WORDWALL EFFECTIVE IN TEACHING ENGLISH TO ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS OR NOT?
This study aims to analyze the effect of the use of Wordwall media on English language learning in elementary school. This research is experimental research. The study was conducted at SDN 04 Bukik Sikumpa, Lareh Sago Halaban District, Lima Puluh Kota Regency, involving two groups of students: an experimental group using Wordwall media and a control group using conventional methods. The results showed that the average value of the experimental group was 77, while the average value of the control group was 65. T-test analysis produced a t_hitung value of 6.078, which is higher than the t_tabelvalue of 2.021. This shows that there is a significant influence of the use of Wordwall media on English learning. Thus, the hypothesis proposed, namely the presence of the influence of Wordwall media in the teaching of English to elementary school students, is acceptable. This research makes an important contribution to the development of more effective methods of teaching English at the primary level
INVESTIGATING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF QUESTION-GENERATION STRATEGY IN ENHANCING NARRATIVE TEXT COMPREHENSION AMONG EFL LEARNERS
Many students struggle with reading comprehension because they do not know how to identify key information, are less engaged in learning, and have limited exposure to interactive strategies. This study examined the effect of the question-generation strategy on ninth-grade students’ comprehension of narrative texts at MTsN 2 Agam. Employing a quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group design, the research involved 122 students across five classes, with two classes selected: IX.1 (25 students) as the experimental group and IX.2 (24 students) as the control group. The experimental group received instruction through the question-generation strategy, while the control group was taught using conventional methods. Reading comprehension was assessed using a multiple-choice test, and the data were analyzed through normality and homogeneity checks, followed by paired-sample and independent-sample t-tests. The findings revealed a significant effect of the intervention, with the experimental group achieving greater gains from pre-test to post-test compared to the control group (Sig. < 0.05). These results suggest that the question-generation strategy effectively enhances reading comprehension and encourages more active and meaningful learning in EFL classrooms
COLLEGE STUDENTS’ ABILITY IN USING AFFIXATION ON FORMING WORDS
This study investigates the ability of sixth-semester students in the English Education Study Program at UMMY Solok (2023/2024) to use affixation in word formation. Using a descriptive quantitative method, the study involved 17 students, divided into two groups through random sampling. Six students participated in a tryout, while ten students were selected as the research sample. Data were collected through a test assessing students' understanding of prefixes, suffixes, and their combinations. The findings indicate that students performed well with prefixes, fairly with suffixes, and poorly when combining prefixes and suffixes. Errors were most common when students were unsure of how to correctly attach affixes to root words. These results highlight the need for targeted instructional strategies to enhance students’ morphological competence. The study contributes to curriculum development and suggests incorporating additional affixation-focused materials and training. Future research may further explore affixation difficulties and their impact on linguistic proficiency
Studi Penerapan Snowball Throwing Pada Metode Two Stay Two Stray Pada Pembelajaran Matematika Kelas VIII SMP Negeri 4 Kota Solok
This study was motivated by the lack of interaction between educators and students, the lack of willingness of students to convey ideas. One way that can be done to overcome this is to apply Snowball Throwing to the Two Stay Two Stray Method in learning mathematics. The purpose of this study was to determine that the mathematics learning outcomes of students taught by applying Snowball Throwing to the Two Stay Two Stray Method were better than without using Snowball Throwing. This type of research is a quasi-experiment with a Randomized Control Group Only Design research design. The population in this study were students of class VIII SMP Negeri 4 Solok City with a total of 104 people. For sampling is done by Cluster Random Sampling and selected VIIIB class as an experimental class and VIIIA class as a control class. The instrument used to determine learning outcomes is the final test. Analysis of data on student learning outcomes obtained tcount> ttable (4.68> 1.68) with ? = 0.05 at a confidence interval of 95%, then the decision is H0 rejected and H1 accepted, meaning that the math learning outcomes of students taught with the Snowball Throwing learning method on the Two Stay Two Stray method are better than without Snowball Throwing
Pengaruh Penerapan Model Pembelajaran Kooperatif Bertukar Pasangan Disertai Handout Terhadap Hasil Belajar Matematika Siswa Kelas XI IPA SMAN 1 Sungai Geringging
This study aims to determine the effect of the application of cooperative learning models on exchanging pairs accompanied by handouts of students' mathematics learning outcomes in class XI IPA SMAN 1 Sungai Geringging. This research is a pre-experiment with a randomized control group only design research design. The population in this study were all students of class XI IPA SMAN 1 Sungai Geringging. Sampling using purposive sampling technique is class XI IPA2 as the experimental class and class XI IPA1 as the control class. Learning outcomes that are analyzed are learning outcomes in the cognitive domain. Based on data analysis obtained the average value in the experimental class is 78,91 and the average value in the control class is 66,5 meaning that the average experimental class is higher than the control class. The results of the t-test analysis obtained tcount = 4,53 and t (0,05; 60) = 1,67. The results of the calculation can be seen tcount > ttable means that H0 is rejected, it means students' mathematics learning outcomes by applying cooperative learning models to exchange pairs accompanied by handouts are better than learning outcomes in the control class
ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY COMPONENTS: A STUDY OF ENGLISH STUDENTS' WRITING AT UIN MAHMUD YUNUS BATUSANGKAR
Many students got problems in writing argumentative specially in apllying to write the component of essay such as attention getter, thesis statement, pro argument, counter argument, rebuttal, and conclusion. The purpose of this research is to find out how fourth semester English students of UIN Mahmud Yunus Batusangkar applying to write the component of argumentative writing in their essay. This research used a document analysis method. The object of this research was the argumentative writing components contained in the writings made by fourth semester English Department students of UIN Mahmud Yunus Batusangkar Academic Year 2022/2023. In this research, the researcher acts as a key instrument and the mid-semester IV exam documents. To test the validity of the data, researcher used source triangulation techniques. Furthermore, in analyzing the data includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing which is the theory of Miles and Huberman (1994: 10-11). The finding showed that 45 students have applied to write the attention getter, thesis statement, and pro argument. 29 students have applied counter-arguments component, 13 students have applied to write rebuttal component, and 45 students have applied to write conclusion component. From the finding, writing rebuttal, counter argument and conclusion should be improve by the students in writing argumentative essay
THE CORRELATION BETWEEN CRITICAL THINKING AND WRITING ABILITY AMONG ENGLISH DEPARTMENT STUDENTS AT STKIP YAYASAN ABDI PENDIDIKAN
Some studies have revealed that critical thinking is related to language proficiency. This research examined the correlation between critical thinking and writing ability in English. This correlational study involved 44 students from the English educational program at STKIP Abdi Pendidikan Payakumbuh who had taken the general writing subject, using total sampling. The instruments included a questionnaire to assess students' critical thinking and official academic records for writing scores. The Pearson Product Moment formula was used to analyze the data. Results indicated a significant positive correlation (r_xy = 0.362, p < 0.05), confirming that critical thinking skills are related to writing ability. This finding highlights that writing, which involves the clear articulation of ideas, constructing arguments, and presenting evidence, inherently requires critical thinking skills
KEMAMPUAN MENULIS TEKS EDITORIAL SISWA KELAS XII SEMESTER I SMA NEGERI 1 SUNGAI LASI KECAMATAN IX KOTO SUNGAI LASI KABUPATEN SOLOK TAHUN PELAJARAN 2023/2024
This research aims to describe the ability to write editorial texts for students in class The population of this study were students of class The research sampling technique was carried out using a random sampling technique, namely by taking the entire population as a sample if the population was less than 100. The data collection technique in this research was a performance test. Data analysis techniques include reading, correcting and scoring student test results, converting raw scores into grades, classifying student scores on a scale of 10, making a histogram, and summarizing the results in the form of a thesis. The results of research on the ability to write editorial texts based on linguistic structures and rules, the average score of students' ability to write editorial texts based on the structure of the issue introduction section is at perfect qualifications with an average score of 100. The students' ability to write editorial texts based on the structure of the argumentation section is at excellent qualifications with an average score of 100. Students' ability to write editorial texts based on the structure of the conclusion and recommendation sections is in very good qualifications with an average score of 90.66. Students' ability to write editorial texts based on linguistic rules for parts of popular words is at perfect qualifications with an average score of 100. Students' ability to write editorial texts based on linguistic rules for parts of time, place and events is at perfect qualifications with an average score of 99. 56. Students' ability to write editorial texts based on linguistic rules for persuasive sentences is more than adequate with an average score of 66.23. Students' ability to write editorial texts based on the linguistic rules of the conflicting conjunction section is at almost sufficient qualifications with an average score of 52.89. The students' ability to write editorial texts based on the linguistic rules of our pronoun section is at a sufficient qualification with an average score of 65.33. Based on the qualifications above, it can be concluded that the students' ability to write editorial texts in class XII Semester 1 of SMA Negeri 1 IX Koto Sungai Lasi, Solok Regency Academic Year 2023/2024 is in good qualifications (BK) with a mastery level of 76-85% with an average score of 84.77.
Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan kemampuan menulis teks editorial siswa kelas XII Semester I SMA Negeri 1 Sungai Lasi Kecamatan IX Koto Sungai Lasi Kabupaten Solok Tahun Pelajaran 2023/2024. Jenis penelitian ini adalah penelitian kuantitatif dengan menggunakan metode deskriptif. Populasi penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas XII SMA Negeri 1 Sungai Lasi Kecamatan IX Koto Sungai Lasi Kabupaten Solok. Sampel penelitian adalah kelas XII IPA 1, XII IPA 2, dan XII IPS yang terdaftar pada tahun ajaran tersebut yang berjumlah 75 orang. Teknik pengambilan sampel penelitian dilakukan dengan teknik random sampling, yaitu dengan mengambil keseluruhan populasi menjadi sampel apabila jumlah populasi kurang dari 100. Teknik pengumpulan data pada penelitian ini adalah tes unjuk kerja. Teknik analisis data berupa membaca, mengoreksi dan memberikan skor hasil tes siswa, mengubah skor mentah menjadi nilai, mengklasifikasikan nilai siswa dengan skala 10, membuat histogram, dan menyimpulkan hasil dalam bentuk skripsi. Hasil penelitian kemampuan menulis teks editorial berdasarkan struktur dan kaidah kebahasaan, nilai rata-rata kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teks editorial berdasarkan struktur bagian pengenalan isu berada pada kualifikasi sempurna dengan nilai rata-rata 100. Kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teks editorial berdasarkan struktur bagian argumentasi berada pada kualifikasi sempurna dengan nilai rata-rata 100. Kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teks editorial berdasarkan struktur bagian simpulan dan rekomendasi berada pada kualifikasi baik sekali dengan nilai rata-rata 90,66. Kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teks editorial berdasarkan kaidah kebahasaan bagian kata populer berada pada kualifikasi sempurna dengan nilai rata-rata 100. Kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teks editorial berdasarkan kaidah kebahasaan bagian waktu, tempat, dan peristiwa berada pada kualifikasi sempurna dengan nilai rata-rata 99,56. Kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teks editorial berdasarkan kaidah kebahasaan bagian kalimat persuasif berada pada kualifikasi lebih dari cukup dengan nilai rata-rata 66,23. Kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teks editorial berdasarkan kaidah kebahasaan bagian konjungsi pertentangan berada pada kualifikasi hampir cukup dengan nilai rata-rata 52,89. Kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teks editorial berdasarkan kaidah kebahasaan bagian kata ganti kita berada pada kualifikasi cukup dengan nilai rata-rata 65,33. Berdasarkan kualifikasi di atas dapat disimpulkan bahwa kemampuan menulis teks editorial siswa kelas XII Semester 1 SMA Negeri 1 IX Koto Sungai Lasi Kabupaten Solok Tahun Pelajaran 2023/2024 berada pada kualifikasi baik (BK) dengan tingkat penguasaan 76-85% dengan nilai rata-rata 84,77
