    Analisis Gaya Komunikasi Berbahasa Asertif Pada Program “Desak Anies”.

            This research examines the language style used by Anies Baswedan in the “Desak Anies” program on Kompas TV, focusing on how assertive communication strategies are adapted to modern media platforms in Indonesia's political landscape. Using a qualitative approach with content analysis, episodes aired between January and December 2023 were analyzed based on McNair’s political communication theory and Austin’s speech act theory. The findings highlight four main assertive communication styles: basic assertion for clarity, empathic assertion for emotional connection, escalating assertion for firm responses, and confrontative assertion for addressing misinformation. By maintaining message consistency across platforms, this study emphasizes how political figures can effectively engage audiences, build trust, and shape public opinion in the digital era. This research contributes to the understanding of political communication strategies in Indonesia's ever-evolving media context

            This article analyzes assertive speech acts in Nadiem Makarim's last speech  as Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technolog on education national day Using a pragmatic approach, this study identifies the types of assertive speech acts used and their functions in conveying messages to the audience. This study aims to to identify the types of assertive speech acts used and their communicative functions in the context of the speech and also to explore the use of assertive speech acts in Nadiem Makarim's speech to understand their communicative functions and effectiveness in a formal context. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, cpthis study examines the speech transcript to classify assertive speech acts based on their type and function, drawing on frameworks from pragmatics.". The results of the study show that the analysis revealed the frequent use of assertive acts such as stating to build credibility, suggesting to inspire action, and reminding to emphasize shared goals These insights contribute to understanding effective public communication strategies and enhance the study of speech acts in formal and political contexts

    REDUCING ENGLISH SPEAKING ANXIETY IN CLASSROOM PRESENTATIONS: THE ROLE OF CHATBOT-ASSISTED PREPARATION

            Speaking anxiety is a common issue among students in an English learning context, particularly when engaging in oral presentations. This study investigates whether chatbot-assisted preparation can reduce speaking anxiety among non-English major students. Employing pre-test post-test control group design, 40 participants were randomly distributed to either an experimental group (preparation with chatbot assistance) or a control group (preparation without chatbot assistance). A modified, Indonesian-translated version of the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) was used to measure anxiety levels. Independent pre-test comparisons showed no significant difference between groups (p = 0.635), indicating baseline equivalence. Paired-sample t-test results revealed a significant decrease in anxiety within the experimental group (p < 0.001), while the control group showed no significant change (p = 0.558). Finally, independent post-test comparisons indicated a significantly lower anxiety level in the experimental group compared to the control group (p = 0.002). These findings suggest that chatbots can be a valuable tool for reducing speaking anxiety and enhancing oral performance in foreign language education

    GENDER DIFFERENCES IN WRITING ABILITY: A STUDY ON DESCRIPTIVE TEXTS AMONG NINTH-GRADE STUDENTS

            This study aims to examine gender-based differences in English descriptive writing performance among ninth-grade students at SMPN 1 Kubung during the 2024/2025 academic year. Employing a descriptive quantitative research design, the study involved a purposive sample of 16 students, comprising 8 male and 8 female participants randomly selected from Class IX.1. Data were collected through a writing assessment in which students composed descriptive texts based on one of ten visual prompts. Writing samples were evaluated independently by three trained scorers using standardized criteria, including topic selection and themes, description structure and character development, self-expression and emotional depth, length, and language use and style. The results indicated that male students achieved a marginally higher mean score (58.86) compared to female students (55.96). While both groups demonstrated strength in aligning their writing with the selected topics, they exhibited similar challenges in producing sufficiently detailed and elaborated texts. These findings highlight the nuanced influence of gender on writing proficiency and underscore the need for instructional approaches that are sensitive to gender-related differences in skill development. The study contributes valuable insights for educators and researchers seeking to design targeted interventions to improve descriptive writing competence among secondary school learners.Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat bagaimana perbedaan antara kemampuan siswa laki-laki dan perempuan dalam menulis teks deskriptif dalam bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini didasarkan pada observasi yang menemukan bahwa kemampuan antara kedua gender dalam bahasa Inggris berbeda, kemampuan menulisnya pun berbeda. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kuantitatif deskriptif. Populasi dan sampel penelitian ini terdiri dari 8 siswa laki-laki dan 8 siswa perempuan dari kelas IX.1 di SMPN 1 Kubung pada tahun ajaran 2024/2025. Instrumen yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah tes tertulis, yang berjumlah satu soal uraian dengan pilihan 10 gambar yang dapat dipilih siswa sebagai bahan tulisan mereka. Tes tertulis dilakukan untuk melihat perbedaan kemampuan menulis antara siswa laki-laki dan perempuan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ketiga penilai setuju bahwa hasil score siswa laki-laki lebih unggul daripada siswa perempuan dengan perbandingan nilai rata-rata 58,86 dan 55,96. Dengan demikian dengan adanya penelitian ini, dengan memahami bagaimana perbedaan gender mempengaruhi hasil tulisan siswa, guru dapat menyusun metode pengajaran yang lebih responsif terhadap kebutuhan masing-masing gender.  Bagi siswa, diharapkan siswa lebih meningkatkan minat belajar bahasa Inggris terutama dalam menulis. Bagi peneliti yang memiliki variabel atau topik yang sama atau serupa, diharapkan penelitian ini dapat menjadi referensi

    Upaya Mengatasi Rendahnya Minat Belajar Bahasa Inggris Melalui Pendekatan Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) dan Media Interaktif di Kelas VII-8 SMP Negeri 2 Kisaran

           This study addresses the low level of student interest in English learning among Grade VII-8 students at SMP Negeri 2 Kisaran by implementing the Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) approach in combination with interactive media. The primary challenge identified was students’ lack of engagement, which contributed to reduced participation and suboptimal learning outcomes. Employing a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design over two cycles, the study followed the stages of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The participants consisted of 32 students, with data collected through observation, documentation, and learning outcome tests. Results demonstrated a positive impact on both student interest and academic performance. Notably, the proportion of students in the “very good” performance category (scores 90–100) increased from 0% to 6.6%, and those in the “good” category (80–89) rose from 6.6% to 26.7%. Concurrently, the number of students in the “poor” category (below 75) decreased from 55.7% to 41.4%. Observations also indicated improved classroom participation, enthusiasm, and involvement in discussions. While these findings suggest that the TaRL approach and interactive media can enhance student engagement and outcomes, further research employing statistical analysis is recommended to confirm the significance of these improvements.Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengatasi rendahnya minat belajar Bahasa Inggris siswa kelas VII-8 SMP Negeri 2 Kisaran dengan menerapkan pendekatan Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) dan menggunakan media interaktif. Masalah utama yang dihadapi adalah kurangnya antusias siswa dalam mengikuti pelajaran Bahasa Inggris yang berdampak pada rendahnya aktivitas belajar dan pencapaian hasil belajar. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK) yang dilaksanakan dalam dua siklus yang masing-masing terdiri dari tahap perencanaan, tindakan, observasi, dan refleksi. Pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui angket minat belajar, observasi, dokumentasi, dan tes hasil belajar. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penerapan pendekatan TaRL dan media interaktif secara signifikan meningkatkan minat belajar siswa yang ditandai dengan peningkatan aktivitas di kelas, keterlibatan siswa dalam diskusi, dan peningkatan skor rata-rata hasil belajar.     THE IMPACT OF CHARACTER QUOTES STRATEGY ON EFL LEARNERS’ READING COMPREHENSION OF NARRATIVE TEXTS

            Many students in SMAN 8 Mandau faced difficulties in reading comprehension, particularly in identifying main ideas, locating specific information, and making inferences. Conventional teacher-centered methods, which relied heavily on explanation, limited student engagement and comprehension. To address this issue, this study investigated the effectiveness of the character quotes strategy in enhancing reading comprehension of narrative texts. A true-experimental design was employed with 11th-grade students (n = 395) across 11 classes. The experimental group received instruction using the character quotes strategy, while the control group was taught conventionally. A multiple-choice reading comprehension test served as the research instrument, and non-parametric tests (Wilcoxon Signed-Rank and Mann–Whitney U) were applied due to the data distribution. The findings revealed significant differences between the groups (Sig. [2-tailed] = 0.000 < 0.05), with the experimental group achieving higher post-test scores. These results suggest that integrating the character quotes strategy into reading instruction can significantly improve comprehension and foster greater learner engagement. The study highlights the pedagogical value of interactive strategies in EFL classrooms and provides implications for enhancing reading instruction in similar contexts.

    DEVELOPING AN ENGLISH PRONUNCIATION ASSESSMENT TOOL FOR 10TH GRADE STUDENTS: A CASE STUDY AT JABAL RAHMAH MULIA HIGH SCHOOL

          This study aims to develop evaluation and assessment tools tailored for improving English pronunciation skills among 10th-grade students at Jabal Rahmah Mulia High School. Recognizing the challenges students face in mastering pronunciation, particularly in non-native English-speaking contexts, the research emphasizes the importance of structured and systematic evaluation. The study adopts a research and development (R&D) methodology, involving needs analysis, tool design, implementation, and validation stages. Data were gathered through classroom observations, interviews with English teachers, and a diagnostic analysis of students' pronunciation abilities. The tools developed include pronunciation assessment rubrics, digital and offline feedback mechanisms, and task-based evaluation models focusing on segmental (individual sounds) and suprasegmental (stress, rhythm, intonation) aspects. These tools were validated by experts and trialed in classroom settings to ensure reliability and practicality. The findings demonstrate that integrating these tools into the English learning process significantly enhances students’ pronunciation accuracy, fluency, and confidence. Teachers reported improved engagement and participation among students, while learners expressed greater awareness of their pronunciation weaknesses and progress. This study underscores the critical role of well-designed pronunciation assessments in language learning and provides a framework that can be adapted for similar educational contexts. Future research is recommended to explore the long-term impact of these tools on communicative competence and their scalability across different grade levels and school settings

    STUDENTS’ WRITING ANXIETY IN ACADEMIC WRITING PRACTICE

          Writing in academic English can be challenging, often leading to feelings of nervousness and hesitation among students. This study aims to identify the types of writing anxiety experienced by English Department students during academic writing. Twenty undergraduate students from STKIP Yayasan Abdi Pendidikan Payakumbuh participated in the research. Data were collected using the Second Language Writing Anxiety Inventory (SLWAI) developed by Chang, which consists of closed-ended questions and is classified as a standardized questionnaire. The findings indicate that cognitive anxiety is the most prevalent form of writing anxiety among students. This reinforces the notion that writing anxiety is a significant barrier to developing writing skills, consistent with similar research conducted at other universities. To enhance their writing success, students must consider several important factors, including personality traits, teaching methods, awareness, and emotional influences. Future research should further explore these variables, as understanding their impact can lead to improved teaching practices and better support for students facing writing anxiety. By addressing these factors, educators can create a more conducive learning environment that fosters confidence and skill development in academic writing. Ultimately, recognizing and mitigating writing anxiety is essential for helping students succeed in their academic endeavors.

    Pengaruh Vocabulary Self-collection strategi terhadap penguasaan kosakata siswa kelas delapan SMPN 1 Matur

             This study was conducted to address several problems in students’ English learning, particularly in vocabulary acquisition. First, students faced difficulties in learning and retaining vocabulary. Second, they had not received adequate English instruction at the elementary school level. The purpose of this research was to examine the effectiveness of the Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy (VSS) in improving students’ vocabulary mastery. A pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach was used. The population consisted of 8th-grade students at SMPN 1 Matur in the 2024/2025 academic year, with a total sample of 18 students selected through total sampling, as only one class was available. Data were collected using a vocabulary test comprising 20 items. The mean pretest score was 30.56, which increased significantly to 58.06 in the posttest. The hypothesis test showed that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted, with a significance value (Sig. 2-tailed) of 0.000, which is lower than ? = 0.05. This indicates that the use of VSS had a statistically significant effect on students’ vocabulary mastery. The posttest scores demonstrated clear improvement, confirming the effectiveness of the strategy. Therefore, it can be concluded that VSS is an effective method for enhancing vocabulary learning among 8th-grade students at SMPN 1 Matur.Penelitian ini dilakukan karena beberapa masalah: Pertama, siswa mengalami kesulitan dalam mempelajari kosakata. Kedua, siswa tidak dibekali dengan pembelajaran bahasa inggris ketika di jenjang sekolah dasar. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui dampak penggunaan VSS terhadap peningkatan penguasaan kosakata siswa ketika belajar bahas inggris. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain Pre-eksperimen dengan pendekatan pretest dan posttest dalam satu kelompok. Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas 8 SMPN 1 Matur, dengan sampel sebanyak 18 siswa. Pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui instrumen tes kosakata berupa 20 soal. Analisis data dilakukan dengan menggunakan paired sample test dengan bantuan SPSS 20. Hasil uji hipotesis menunjukkan bahwa hipotesis alternatif (Ha) diterima yang artinya VSS memiliki pengaruh yang signifikan terhadap peningkatan penguasaan kosakata siswa kelas 8 SMPN 1 Matur. Hal ini juga dibuktikan dengan nilai rata-rata posttest yang lebih tinggi dibandingkan dengan nilai rata-rata pretest. Lebih lanjut, penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa setelah diterapkan VSS, penguasaan kosakata siswa jauh lebih baik dibandingkan sebelum menggunakan VSS. Dengan demikian, dapat disimpulkan bahwa strategi ini merupakan strategi yang efektif untuk meningkatkan kosakata

    INTEGRATING LOCAL WISDOM OF RIAU MALAY CULTURE IN ENGLISH LEARNING IN 4.0 ERA

             Providing English materials based on local wisdom of Riau Malay is appropriate to improve the students’ English skill and also their cultural values and norms. Integrating moral values or local wisdom into English teaching and learning process can protect future generations from the deterioration of their national identity. The objectives of this research were to analyse the integration of local wisdom of Riau Malay Culture in English learning and the effects of the integration of local wisdom on students’ English skills. Systematic literature review was employed in the study by implementing PRISMA. This study utilized article databases and search engines namely Scopus, Semantic Scholar and Google Scholar to obtain the data. There were 11 articles as the data source which analyzed by employing narrative synthesis. The results of this study found that local wisdom of Riau Malay can be integrated into English learning namely reading, writing and speaking skills. Integrating Riau Malay Cultural values in English learning can enhance the students’ English ability and their cultural awareness in preserving local culture and national identity. Nevertheless, the studies related to the integration of local wisdom of Riau Malay Culture into English learning is very limited, this research is necessary to fill that gap.  It is also suggested for the next researchers to conduct further investigations related to this topic.Di era disrupsi ini, banyak generasi muda Indonesia yang kehilangan kesadaran akan identitas dan integritas mereka. Mereka cenderung mengadopsi budaya dari negara lain, yang mungkin merugikan nilai-nilai nasional. Untuk mengatasi masalah ini, praktisi pendidikan mencari metode yang lebih baik untuk melindungi generasi mendatang dari kemerosotan identitas nasional mereka. Salah satu metode adalah dengan mengintegrasikan nilai-nilai moral atau kearifan lokal ke dalam proses belajar mengajar. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis integrasi kearifan lokal Budaya Melayu Riau dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris dan dampak integrasi kearifan lokal terhadap keterampilan Bahasa Inggris siswa. Tinjauan pustaka sistematis digunakan dalam penelitian ini dengan menerapkan PRISMA. Penelitian ini memanfaatkan basis data artikel dan mesin pencari yaitu Scopus, Semantic Scholar dan Google Scholar untuk mendapatkan data. Ada 11 artikel sebagai sumber data yang dianalisis dengan menggunakan sintesis naratif. Hasil penelitian ini menemukan bahwa kearifan lokal Melayu Riau dapat diintegrasikan ke dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris yaitu keterampilan membaca, menulis dan berbicara. Mengintegrasikan kearifan lokal Budaya Melayu Riau dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris dapat meningkatkan kemampuan Bahasa Inggris siswa dan kesadaran budaya mereka dalam melestarikan budaya lokal dan identitas nasional. Meskipun demikian, penelitian terkait integrasi kearifan lokal Budaya Melayu Riau ke dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris masih sangat terbatas, sehingga disarankan bagi peneliti selanjutnya untuk melakukan penelitian lebih lanjut terkait topik ini
