Analyse des potenziellen Beitrags einer fahrleistungsabhängigen Pkw-Maut im österreichischen hochrangigen Straßennetz zur Zielerreichung des Mobilitätsmasterplans 2030
This master's thesis investigates the potential impact of a distance-based vehicle toll system for passenger cars on Austria's high-ranking road network in achieving the objectives of the Mobility Master Plan 2030 by the Federal Ministry for Climate Action. As urbanization and climate change challenge traditional transportation systems, innovative approaches to managing mobility are essential. This study posits that such a toll system could significantly reshape mobility behaviour among the Austrian population.
Through qualitative research involving in-depth interviews with a diverse demographic, the thesis captures public perceptions, expected behavioural changes, and overall acceptance of the proposed toll system. Findings indicate that a distance-based toll, along with measures like increased parking fees and promoting alternative transport modes, can effectively reduce private car usage and encourage sustainable transportation practices. The analysis emphasizes the need for financial restructuring in transport. Without making driving less financially attractive, individual car use is likely to persist. An integrated strategy encompassing active mobility promotion, public transport enhancement, and intermodal solutions is essential. Establishing multimodal hubs that connect various transportation options can increase the appeal of sustainable mobility. The thesis also highlights the importance of continuous evaluation and monitoring of implemented measures to ensure that the goals of the Mobility Master Plan are met. Raising public awareness and fostering educational initiatives are crucial for understanding the environmental impacts of transportation choices.
Ultimately, the research concludes that the mobility transition is a multifaceted challenge requiring coordinated action from all stakeholders, including policymakers, businesses, science, and civil society. This work lays the groundwork for future research on transportation policies and behavioural economics, aiming to facilitate a transition towards a greener, more efficient mobility landscape in Austria. It advocates for a comprehensive understanding of the interplay between toll systems and mobility behaviour, contributing to the ongoing discourse on sustainable transport solutions.Masterarbeit Wien, Fachhochschule des BFI Wien 202
How commodity hedging strategies perform in a volatile market environment
This thesis aims to address a question relevant for many businesses that are relying on commodity prices: How do different hedging strategies perform during periods of high volatility in the relevant commodity prices? This illustrates not only the benefits, but also the risks associated with two main hedging strategies – one using options and the other using futures. The simulation of both strategies using crude oil prices from 2020, 2021 and 2022 demonstrates how they perform under different market conditions, including sharp price declines and surges. To further strengthen the importance of a well-executed hedging strategy, examples of various companies whose hedging strategy backfired are analyzed. From a gold supplier in South Africa, to a zinc supplier in Australia to the recent scare for Wien Energie, an Austrian energy provider, they all had hedging mechanisms in place and experienced financial difficulties due to liquidity issues arising from their hedge. This illustrates the importance of assessing potential consequences of different strategies as done in this thesis.
The simulations show that the outcome depends on the fact whether the hedge was beneficial or not. A company hedging against price increases in crude oil in a year of low prices, the company is better off using options instead of futures. On the other hand, if prices increase sharply, like in 2022, the financial benefit is higher using futures than options. In other words, a non-beneficial hedge is cheaper when using options, but less effective if the hedging mechanism is needed due to unfavorable price movements. However, not only are the bottom-line results relevant for companies, but also the balance on their margin accounts when hedging with futures. The simulation shows that price movements which are generally favorable for the company, but working against the hedge position, can create significant and unexpected cash requirements in form of margin calls.Masterarbeit Wien, Fachhochschule des BFI Wien 202
Enhancing modern portfolio theory : a machine learning approach to optimal asset allocation
This thesis investigates whether a machine learning-based approach can effectively enhance portfolio optimization by predicting optimal portfolio weights. Specifically, it explores the application of an Extreme Gradient Boosting Model (XGBoost) combined with SHAP value interpretability to forecast Sharpe ratios and construct portfolios. The model's performance is evaluated against traditional benchmarks, including the Markowitz Maximum Sharpe Ratio Portfolio, the Markowitz Minimum Variance Portfolio, and an Equal-Weighted Portfolio.
Using daily adjusted returns of a comprehensive asset universe—including constituents of the S&P 500, Euro Stoxx 50, and government bonds (US and EUR)—a constrained portfolio optimization framework was developed. The methodology incorporated a rolling window walk-forward validation to ensure strict out-of-sample prediction integrity and avoid look-ahead bias. Hyperparameters were optimized using Optuna, and SHAP values were employed to interpret feature importance.
The empirical results show that the XGBoost-based portfolio consistently outperformed the Markowitz portfolios across multiple metrics, including cumulative returns, Sharpe Ratio, and maximum drawdown. While the Equal-Weighted Portfolio achieved the highest cumulative returns, the XGBoost strategy provided competitive results with superior risk-adjusted performance. SHAP analysis revealed that volatility indicators, macroeconomic spreads, and momentum factors were the most influential features in portfolio decision-making.
The findings suggest that machine learning techniques, particularly XGBoost enhanced with SHAP explanations, offer a viable and interpretable alternative to traditional mean-variance optimization. The study contributes both theoretically and practically to the field of portfolio management and opens avenues for future research, including the application to different asset classes, the use of neural networks, and dynamic model re-tuning strategies.Masterarbeit Wien, Fachhochschule des BFI Wien 202
Dark Leadership und Bad Followership in Teamdynamik und Unternehmenskultur : Erkennung, Prävention und Gegenmaßnahmen bei destruktiver Führung
Dark Leadership is a destructive form of leadership shaped by personality traits known as the Dark Triad of personality – narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy. It is characterized by manipulative and exploitative strategies that may appear exemplary or appealing to employees. Followers are often drawn to charismatic leaders, even when these leaders engage in destructive behaviors. In this context, Dark Leadership is often difficult to detect and may even be reinforced by the concept of Bad Followership - a phenomenon in which employees are not merely seen as ’passive victims’ but ‘active enablers’ of destructive leadership dynamics.
This study analyzes how Dark Leadership and Bad Followership impact team dynamics, employee performance, and organizational culture. It also examines preventive and active measures that organizations can implement to identify and reduce destructive leadership and followership behaviors at an early stage.
To answer the research questions, an empirical study was conducted using qualitative social research method. The study is based on expert interviews with professionals from the fields of work and organizational psychology, human resources, and project management.
The findings reveal that Dark Leadership often manifests subtly through manipulation, control, and structural reinforcement. Employees may tolerate or support such behavior due to fear, uncertainty, or lack of awareness. Moreover, Bad Followership is shaped not only by individual predispositions but also by organizational conditions such as rigid hierarchies, limited transparency, and the absence of support systems.
Effective prevention requires a multi-level approach, including diagnostic tools in recruitment, awareness training at the employee level, and structural reforms within the organization. This study contributes to the field of leadership and organizational research by emphasizing the reciprocal nature of leadership and followership and by offering practice-oriented insights into mitigating destructive dynamics in organizations.
Crisis situations like the Corona pandemic and the ongoing war in Europe face multiple threats to not only the operational and organizational goals of any organization but may also interfere with every aspect of work throughout an organization’s staff. Therefore, the establishment of organizational resilience as a method and principle has become a basic factor to remain resilient in uncertain times.
The aim of this thesis is to get insights on the status of organizational resilience based on the example of Raiffeisen Bank International AG to answer the central research question “Which aspects and fields of action serve to support, strengthen and broaden organizational resilience from the perspective of managers using the example of Raiffeisen Bank International AG?”, including sub-research questions regarding tasks and fields of action for managers for supporting organizational resilience, which measures are applied and most effective, what advantages does an organization have if it has a high level of organizational resilience (including goals to achieve) and what impact do these measures have on leadership behaviour and personnel development.
To answer this research question, both a theoretical overview and a qualitative research method in the form of seven guided interviews with managers were conducted and then analyzed using Mayring’s qualitative content analysis (2015).
The qualitative study results clearly show that all managers support organizational as well as individual resilience by adopting an open-minded culture top-down by management with a focus on enablement and ongoing adaptation. Eighty per cent of the manager’s job is seen as relationship work with a focus on interpersonal and emotional aspects, with understanding for and interest in employees to maintain organizational resilience.
Women continue to be underrepresented in positions of leadership despite rising degrees and a supportive legal environment. The following master thesis questions the social and cultural barriers that hinder the career progress of women in the financial sector and the effectiveness of corporate gender equality measures in overcoming these barriers. The intention is to examine the underlying causes of this inequality and determine which business practices can effectively advance women into management roles. The work is theoretically grounded in gendered organization and socialization theory. These approaches show how strongly structural and cultural factors in companies as well as gender-related role expectations maintain existing inequalities.
The study also considers the historical evolution and present barriers of gender equality initiatives. Semi-structured interviews with women in management and specialized roles in the finance sector form the basis of the empirical study. Key obstacles such as stereotypical expectations of leadership abilities, traditional gender roles, difficulty accessing informal networks, an unequal distribution of caregiving responsibilities and a lack of transparency in promotion processes were identified through qualitative content analysis. The findings also demonstrate the potential for policies like diversity training, well-defined career pathways, mentorship programs, and a family-friendly workplace culture to reduce current inequalities. The last section includes practical recommendations that are aimed at both companies and political decision-makers.Masterarbeit Wien, Fachhochschule des BFI Wien 202
Mitarbeiterbindung Mitarbeiterinnenbindung
In addition to the increasing life expectancy of the population and the growing shortage of skilled professionals in the nursing sector, the healthcare system faced a profound disruption in 2019 due to the emergence of the global COVID-19 pandemic. This event has significantly impacted nurses' working conditions, exposing the lack of systemic preparedness for such a matter, which has resulted in considerable challenges and much-needed transformations within healthcare facilities worldwide. The pandemic has not only highlighted insufficiency in preparedness but has also shifted the viewpoint on nursing roles, triggering the need to prioritize the mental and physical well-being of healthcare workers. Many nurses have experienced severe stress related factors, such as anxiety, insomnia, excessive workload, as well as long working hours and fear of infection. This has ultimately led to a substantial number of healthcare workers leaving their profession. In a rapidly evolving world shaped by demographic, technological, and societal changes, healthcare systems must adapt by integrating employee retention strategies into their human resource management practices, in order to ensure sustainable workforce development and improved health care delivery. This research paper emphasizes the critical role of nursing in both present and future time, particularly in the context of the world's most severe healthcare crises, whilst providing insights from the perspective of a private care provider in Austria. The study’s primary objective is to identify and showcase effective measures and tools to enhance employee retention and satisfaction. Empirical findings derived from problem-centered interviews emphasize how affective commitment, where employees internalize and support the values and objectives of their employer, stands out as a key driver of overall job satisfaction. Moreover, in terms of going beyond internal organizational efforts, the study also stresses the need for improvements in internal policy strategies. Addressing issues such as financial compensation, working hours, workload, and adequate staffing levels is essential for enhancing the appeal of nursing as a profession and mitigate the current ongoing shortage of skilled nurses.Masterarbeit Wien, Fachhochschule des BFI Wien 202
