Running a hospital requires different professions to cooperate efficiently in order to obtain smooth processes and an adequate quality of health care. However, care teams in Austrian hospitals are increasingly struggling with problems caused by several recent developments, indicating the need for change in the collaboration between professions and the allocation of responsibilities. The nursing profession is particularly suffering from an inadequate allocation of responsibilities and the strain associated with additional duties imposed on them apart from their specific care tasks, which regularly results in poorer care quality. Against this background, this paper identifies requirements and success factors of an adequate change management at the Landeskrankenhaus Innsbruck by means of expert interviews with a special focus on leadership and the collaboration of different professions. As it turns out, there are several potential solutions and approaches available to cope with these problems, with an expanded supporting service team being a crucial element of success. Nonetheless, there is obviously a need for additional financial support in order to entirely and sustainably solve the current problems.
Background: Climate change represents the greatest health threat of the 21st century. Extreme weather events are increasing in frequency and magnitude. Increasing heat stress, the urban microclimate and the growing proportion of older people with elevated heat vulnerability entail major new challenges for politics and healthcare. At individual level, health-promoting and climate-friendly behaviors requires adequate awareness of health risks related to climate change as well as knowledge of preventative and reactive heat protection measures. Strengthening health-related climate literacy and thus improved climate resilience of the population is the purpose of educational campaigns via various communication channels, especially as part of the Vienna Heat Action Plan.
Aims: The work examines a sample of the vulnerable population group of 65 to 85 year old Viennese inhabitants. The aim is to conduct an initial survey to assess the risk awareness and knowledge of climate change in relation to heat, the psychological and physical burden of symptoms during heat waves and knowledge of adaptation measures. A particular focus is on the willingness to use digital media and the study collective's preferred sources of information in order to make possible findings accessible for target group-specific health policy strategy planning.
Methods: Based on the concept of health-related climate literacy, a questionnaire was developed for an initial cross-sectional survey. Using online and paper-pencil format surveys, 290 complete protocols from participating people from all 23 districts of Vienna were used for data analysis and evaluated using correlation tests, chi-square testing, ANOVA and two-stage cluster analysis.
Results: Although the majority of the study population, especially the female respondents, recognize the effects of climate change on the environment and society, there is a lower level of threat perception regarding personal health risks related to heat. The low take-up of preventive advice in primary care also indicates low risk awareness. In contrast, there is a high burden of illness and a corresponding increased vulnerability of the participants, especially due to high blood pressure, as well as moderate to significant perceived physical and psychological symptoms during heat waves. The generally high willingness to use digital media is increased among respondents with a higher risk awareness regarding climate change-related heat stress.
Conclusion: This master's thesis provides 1) an initial insight into aspects of the health-related climate competence of 65 to 85-year-old Viennese inhabitants, 2) information on communication channels tailored to the target group and 3) areas of action to increase the climate resilience of the population group in Vienna.Masterarbeit Wien, Fachhochschule des BFI Wien 202

An in-depth analysis of the last 10 years on the Chinese household affordability
China’s rapid economic transformation over the past decade has significantly influenced the household affordability, driven by an evolving monetary policy framework. This study explores the impact of key monetary policies on Chinese household affordability over the last 10 years, assessing their effectiveness in ensuring financial stability and economic accessibility. The research specifically investigates the role of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in monetary strategies, the operation mechanisms of the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) and the banking sector, and the broader economic consequences of these policies.
The study heavily relies on secondary data sources from the PBOC, National Bureau of Statistics of China, IMF, and World Bank. The research includes time series analysis, regression modelling and comparative affordability assessments to examine trends in key economic indicators, including interest rates, inflation, wage growth, housing prices and household debt levels. The affordability index is used as a primary measure to evaluate how monetary policies have shaped the purchasing power of Chinese households.
Preliminary findings suggest that while interest rate adjustments and credit policies have facilitated economic growth, they have also contributed to affordability challenges, particularly in the housing sector, where property prices have risen disproportionately to wage increases. Additionally, external factors such as global trade tensions, the COVID-19 pandemic and demographic shifts have further complicated the affordability landscape.
By providing empirical insights into the relationship between monetary policy and household affordability, this research contributes to the broader discourse on financial inclusion, economic resilience, and policy effectiveness. The study aims to offer data driven recommendations for policy makers to enhance affordability and mitigate financial inequality, ensuring sustainable economic growth for Chinese households in the future.Masterarbeit Wien, Fachhochschule des BFI Wien 202
The impact of the Green Asset Ratio (GAR) on the investment strategies of Austrian banks
This thesis investigates the influence of the Green Asset Ratio (GAR) on the investment strategies of Austrian banks. As part of the EU Taxonomy Framework, the GAR aims to promote transparency in assessing the environmental sustainability of financial institutions’ assets. Through a qualitative approach combining a literature review and semi-structured expert interviews with banking professionals of Austrian banks, this thesis explores how the GAR is currently integrated into banking practices, the challenges faced in implementation and the metrics impact on strategic decision making.
Findings reveal that while the shift towards more sustainable banking has initiated internal adjustments, as well as sparked discussions around taxonomy-aligned investments, the GAR remains primarily a compliance tool. Key limitations include data availability, regulatory complexity, and inconsistent auditor interpretations. Moreover, banks prioritize alternative ESG indicators, like financed emissions and physical risk data, over the GAR. This research highlights that although the processes around the metric are evolving, the GARs limited applicability (SMEs and non-EU exposures), lower the metrics effectiveness.
The thesis concludes that the GAR’s role may grow in significance as regulatory frameworks like the CSRD expand and data quality improves.Masterarbeit Wien, Fachhochschule des BFI Wien 202
Innovation im öffentlichen Sektor : Konflikt oder Synergie
The present thesis explores the integration of innovations within the public sector by examining how bureaucratic organizational culture influences innovation processes in public institutions. Based on a comparative analysis of the Austria Wirtschaftsservice GmbH (aws) and the Municipal Department 35 (MA 35) in Vienna, the research investigates how traditional administrative structures interact with innovative approaches. The challenges and opportunities that arise when implementing innovative solutions are also highlighted. Empirical data was collected through qualitative expert interviews. The findings reveal both synergies and tensions between bureaucratic practices and efforts toward innovation. Despite structural constraints, there is evidence of a growing institutional awareness of the need to adapt in response to societal change and to integrate innovation as a means of remaining effective and relevant.
This master's thesis focuses on the development of prospective junior managers in a company in the social and care sector. The target is to clarify how high-potential employees can get off to a good start in a future leadership role and perform the associated tasks accordingly. As there are no clear findings to date on suitable development steps and measures for junior managers in the social and care sector, this master's thesis is specifically dedicated to this topic and develops concrete recommendations for action to redesign the potential development program. The course is intended to provide junior managers with a good basis for starting their new role and beyond, considering the necessary competences that contribute to coping with everyday management tasks. The guided interviews provided insights into the previous experiences of graduates on the potential development program and their entry into a management role. Above all, junior managers must bring commitment, a willingness to reflect and an energy for personal development. The results showed that social-communicative skills, personal skills, self-management and resilience are crucial for entering a leadership role. Trust from the immediate working environment, a stable network within the company and the mentoring system were identified as the most important forms of support. Ideally, junior managers were able to build up specialist skills in advance through measures such as job enrichment and job rotation. Based on these findings, it was possible to derive recommendations for action to redesign the potential development program.
This master thesis primarily focusses on the question, how the internal collaboration and communication within smaller teams in a medium-sized, Austrian consulting company can be improved. Besides the mentioned main focus, it is also investigated what the current organizational structure in mentioned company looks like, how the team internal communication works at the moment and what challenges the teams in the company are facing in terms of communication. The research on the company shows that it is structured cellularly with high autonomy of each cell in terms of everyday work and decision making on project level.
Most of the already existing scientific literature only considers communication between clients and the assigned consulting company. Contrary, there are little sources to be found investigating communication within the small cells within a consulting company (Appelbaum & Steed, 2005; Lallier Beaudoin et al., 2022).
The chosen research method is qualitative as there is little literature existing on the cellular organisation of companies and the communication within the cells. To get the broadest view possible on this topic, semi-structured interviews of employees of the company are conducted. As for the design of the research, the Grounded Theory is chosen. Following this concept, data will be gathered and coded as long as new interviewees provide new input compared to the already gathered information from previous interviews (Bryman, 2012). Consequently, the goal is to have the most heterogeneous sample as possible by choosing employees on different hierarchy levels, experience and company affiliation. Afterwards, the results of these interviews are compared with the existing literature.
The replies of the interviewees and the existing literature show overlapping results in terms of prerequisites of good communication and good collaboration within the teams. Also, the actions that could potentially be taken to improve communication and collaboration show a certain degree of conformity.
Depending on how long each cell is existing, the communication structures are quite mature and working or are in a development stage with significant room for improvement. On the other hand, the variety of potential challenges in terms of communication is quite significant as well. Among others, the research in this thesis shows language barriers, personality and attitude of the employees themselves or not (yet) existing meeting structures and shared knowledge data bases. The variety of improvement measures on the internal communication is significant with regular meetings, as mentioned shared knowledge data bases or Face-to-Face communication being some of the mentioned possible improvement actions.Masterarbeit Wien, Fachhochschule des BFI Wien 202
Intricating dynamics between emotional intelligence and corporate culture
Human perception encompasses identifying and understanding emotions conveyed through various mediums, such as images, voices, expressions, and personal interactions. This also includes the ability to recognize one’s own feelings. The perception of emotion forms the foundation of emotional intelligence, as it facilitates the processing of all other (emotional) information in an individual. This thesis delineates organizational culture to provide readers with a clear understanding of how a purposeful and systematic shift in the values or operations of an organization or company can lead to holistic advancement. Understanding the decisive factors behind a company’s success and identifying the characteristics necessary for its leaders could lay the groundwork for financial stability. Discerning the key traits needed in a company and its leadership increases the likelihood of creating an organizational culture that fosters satisfaction among both customers and employees. The research questions aim to elucidate the determinants of motivation and gender diversity within companies. Qualitative research involves several individuals examining their experiences, challenges, and perspectives on corporate culture over the years. The focus is also on methodological approaches, findings, and recommendations for future research oriented upon information conducted in the literature review, which will, after critical observation, be stated with a conclusion.Masterarbeit Wien, Fachhochschule des BFI Wien 202
Working paper series by the University of Applied Sciences bfi Vienna / Exploratory Structure Analysis and Item Reduction of the Digital Mindset Scale 1
In this working paper, the item battery developed in Working Paper 128 (Waldhauser 2025) underwent comprehensive empirical testing. Based on a sample of 150 adult participants, the 100 belief-based items were first analysed in terms of distribution characteristics, redundancies and common variance. This was followed by a multi-stage exploratory factor analysis to determine the underlying structure of the construct.
Through successive item reduction and the examination of different extraction and rotation methods, a consistent and theoretically coherent three-dimensional structural model was identified. The final 16 items represent three correlated but clearly distinguishable belief-based dimensions of the digital mindset. The solution shows good model fit indicators and high internal consistency of the subscales.
The analysis was carried out on a heterogeneous sample, which allowed different digital usage contexts to be taken into account. Overall, this Working Paper provides an empirically sound and theoretically well-interpretable structural basis for the further development of the digital mindset scale. On this basis, the confirmatory testing of the model and further validation studies can be carried out in the following work packages.Magistratsabteilung 23, Wirtschaft, Arbeit und Statistik Call 30-20 Digital Mindse
