Ecología cultural del hip hop indígena de Alaska: “Ixsixán, Ax Kwáan (I Love You My People)”
In hip-hop studies, Indigenous rap music has been garnering increasing attention alongside other non-mainstream manifestations of this ‘glocal’ genre, and the field has begun to address the significance of specific locales for artistic expression. Worried about environmental studies research that extracts ecological insights from Indigenous cultures without paying attention to colonial history, Indigenous scholars have been critiquing how non-Indigenous colleagues frequently misconstrue the myriad ways in which place, language, knowledge, and cultural identity are intertwined in tribal cultures. Bringing these discourses into conversation, this article focuses on three music videos produced as part of the Native Connections program of the Tlingit and Haida’s Tribal Family and Youth Services department in 2018 and 2019. These videos, which feature the Juneau-based rappers Arias Hoyle and Chris Talley alongside other Indigenous adolescents, verbally and visually convey an understanding of their environment not as mere setting, but rather as a source of cultural-historical knowledge and current intergenerational cultural practice. Both location and language are showcased as repositories of cultural identification. The juxtapositions of seemingly untouched landscapes and settled cityscapes as well as of English and Tlingit can be read as confirming ecocritical theories that emphasize the ways in which cultural products address seemingly dichotomous elements such as nature/culture as interdependent. The hip-hop lyrics and videos examined here balance awareness of the historical baggage of settler-colonialism with the intellectually and spiritually invigorating celebration of a locally rooted Indigenous identity, which is neither stuck in the past nor unaware of the world at large. These works thus participate in the “cultural ecology” (Hubert Zapf) of hip hop by mapping out an artistic place defined by Alaskan Indigenous—and especially Tlingit—culture and community in Juneau, without losing sight of larger geographical and sociopolitical contexts.
This work of ecocritical narrative scholarship weaves analysis of Richard Powers’ The Overstory—specifically its invocation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth—with a discussion of biosemiotics, metaphor, emergence, and the narrative of my own family’s pandemic-inspired move to a national park in the mountains outside of Madrid. The essay investigates the juncture between the human holobiont—the space in and around the human body that constitutes shared habitats for symbionts—, the holobiont of pine trees, and the human umwelt. In other words, this piece focuses on the spaces in which bacteria, fungi, and the biological origins of semiosis and language converge. I seek to present a clearer perception of the natural world rooted in narratives of emergence that foreground connections—literary, natural, metaphorical, and material. The form of this paper—the latticework that emerges from the interweaving of literary analysis, biosemiotic and ecocritical theory, and personal narrative—is also part of its content. Through its focus on the intersection of narrative, biosemiotics and material ecocriticism, this work calls into question the very nature of literary metaphor and investigates how the material of literature literally ties us to our environment. Through an exploration of the phenomenological parallel between textual motion in literature, viral motion in nature, and the movement of people through natural and social environments, this document challenges the very idea of metaphor, proposing in its stead an insistence that story, consciousness, and organisms converge in the same material space creating patterns of resemblance that speak to the kinship of all biological systems.
The article analyses a turning point in Siegfried Kracauer’s theoretical development: his reception of György’s Lukács’ The Theory of the Novel. In Kracauer’s interpretation, the 1916 essay on the form of the novel offered significative elements for the development of a potentially realist criticism of messianic standpoints, which sought an overcoming of capitalist misery without any “transitions”. Kracauer’s letters to L. Löwenthal, Th. W. Adorno, M. Susman, and E. Bloch show how two opposite concepts of criticism were in dispute during the German interwar period. Moreover, Kracauer’s understanding of The Theory of the Novel significantly conditioned his repudiation of Lukács’ ulterior Marxist theory. Critical Theory, Ordoliberalism and the Capitalist State
In this contribution, the author uses the concept of the state as the political form of capitalist reproduction to shed light on the post-liberal state theories of two intellectual currents that were heavily marked by the experience of Weimar, namely the Freiburg school of ordoliberals and the Institute for Social Research or Institut fur Sozialforschung (IfS). The two intellectual currents, though politically opposed, both argued that the emergence of authoritarian states in the twentieth century reflected a historical transition to a post-liberal economy that favoured state planning to the spontaneity of the free economy. In contrast, the present article argues that the true function of the authoritarian measures of the capitalist state today is not to threaten the logic of the free economy but to facilitate and ensure its continued reproduction. The crises of 2008 and the Covid-19 pandemic have resulted in an increase of state intervention and favoured the rise of authoritarian and demagogic forces in politics. However, rather than heralding a historical crisis of neoliberalism, it is argued that such phenomena ought to be understood as an alternative political means of ensuring the survival, extension, and strengthening of ‘liberal’ capitalist relations during unstable times. In this contribution, the author uses the concept of the state as the political form of capitalist society to shed light on the state theories of two intellectual currents that were heavily marked by crisis of capitalism during the interwar period, namely the Freiburg school of ordoliberals and the Institute for Social Research or Institut fur Sozialforschung (IfS). Though politically opposed, both intellectual currents argued that the free market, left to its own devices, produces crises that lead to the collapse of the relatively autonomous form of the liberal state (Rechtsstaat), and thus to undesirable forms of state intervention and administration. Today, liberal capitalism is said to be in crisis once again. For this reason, this paper compares and contrasts two historic approaches to the “liberal state-economy relation in crisis” and considers their implications for critical theories of the state today
From a brief presentation of Pollock\u27s argument in “State Capitalism”, this paper seeks to trace its frankfurtian reception, that is, its influence on the work of Horkheimer, Adorno, Habermas and Postone. Arguing against a preponderant part of the secondary literature, we suggest that this influence was much more ambiguous (and that the reception of that argument was much more critical) in Horkheimer and Adorno than is usually recognized, contrary to what happens in the Habermasian case, in which convergence seems to be underestimated. Finally, we argue that the concept of “State capitalism”, which is already too problematic as a description of the post-war economic period in advanced countries, is increasingly being overcome with the neoliberal wave that transforms such societies mainly from the 1980s.A partir de una breve presentación del argumento de Pollock en “Capitalismo de Estado”, este trabajo busca rastrear su recepción frankfurtiana, es decir, su influencia en la obra de Horkheimer, Adorno, Habermas y Postone.
Various media-theoretical studies have recently characterized the fourth industrial revolution as a process of all-encompassing technicization and cybernetization. Against this background, this paper seeks to show the timely and critical potential of Günther Anders’s magnum opus Die Antiquiertheit des Menschen vis-à-vis the ever-increasing power of cybernetic devices and networks. Anders has both witnessed, and negotiated, the process of cybernetization from its very beginning, having criticised not only its tendency of automatization and expansion, but also the circular logic and the “integral power” it rests upon, including the destructive consequences for the constitution of the political and the social. In this vein, Anders’s oeuvre can indeed shed new light on the techno-logically organized milieus of the contemporary digital regime. The aim of the essay is, thus, not only to emphasize the contemporariness of Anders’s critical thought and to highlight his advanced understanding of technology compared to representatives of early critical theory, but also use it to frame a critique vis-à-vis current neo-technocratic and, ultimately, post-political concepts, such as “algorithmic regulation”, “smart states”, “direct technocracy”, and “government as platform”. The essay finally seeks to, through Anders’s lens, address the question of the position and role of the critic in relation to ever expanding technical environments.
In Colombia, as of the 1991 Political Constitution, the State is recognized as multi-ethnic and multicultural. The objective of the research is to describe how the social responsibility of the public administration and participatory planning are associated in the formulation of development plans with indigenous communities, in four municipalities of northern Cauca (Santander de Quilichao, Caloto, Jambaló, and Toribío). The research methodology is based on the actor-network theory, in order to trace the associations in the composition of social responsibility in national public policy, and the worldviews of indigenous peoples. The techniques used were documentary analysis, individual and group interviews, participant observation, and descriptive writing. The results of the research are, participatory planning has different expressions; there is "freedom" in the methodologies used; the local government faces ethnic complexity in its territories. The main conclusions are, participatory planning activities require trained personnel who recognize ethnic diversity; more appropriate methodologies must be innovated to address diversity; "Social responsibility" is part of the 1991 Constitution, but it is still far from operational activities in multi-ethnic territories.
82.8% of media users in Spain watch television daily, each of them spending 203 minutes a day, according to the second wave of the General Media Study 2021, a figure that exceeds the European average. In Andalusia, the number rises to 216 minutes a day according to the same report. Hence the interest in analysing the audio-visual companies that fill the different channels with content and, specifically, their social responsibility in the case of Andalusia as an autonomous community, which is above average in terms of consumption. This article studies this social commitment from the perspective of a case study, that of the production company Indaloymedia, a benchmark in Andalusian audio-visual production. The purpose of this company is the creation, production, and distribution of works for television and audio-visual works for the regional market. But what social responsibility can be demanded of a media company? It should not be forgotten that the role of the media is constitutionally enshrined and has its raison d\u27être in this social function. The methodology used was the structural approach (Reig, 2017), combined with direct and participant observation. In-depth interviews were also used, complemented by a survey of journalists. The results point to the company\u27s fulfilment of a relevant social function.
The present study performs a textual analysis of the content generated on the social network Twitter by profiles of users with autism who, under the hashtag #SoyAutista, address the use of the color blue, proposed by the organization Autism Speaks, as a symbol of identity for those within the spectrum. The period analyzed collects a total of 1,958 tweets that under the aforementioned tag were published throughout 2018. The data were initially treated with the social network analysis program Netlytic for the identification of the most frequently used words in the organic campaign[1] that pointed out the term blue as one of the 30 most relevant. Subsequently, in order to study the emotions expressed, the content of the 79 entries containing the term blue (and others related to it, such as puzzle) was extracted for in-depth analysis, as it constituted one of the most clearly identified topics of interest in the media discourse produced by the group of profiles that, for the most part, rejected its use.

The global crisis in the flow of information and communications due to COVID-19, infodemia, largely caused by social networks, has left a global concern about the impact of fake news on societies. The increase in the consumption of networks and the presence of the population in these spaces impose the need to know how to adequately address this social problem, which involves the management of digital identity and network consumption habits. In this sense, the study presented here, of an exploratory nature and with the philosophy of exploration-action, has the dual objective of exploring the perceptions, uses and consumption of digital identity, social networks, and fake news in order, secondly, to propose specific actions. The research is approached with a quantitative, descriptive, and correlational methodology in a sample of 248 master\u27s and bachelor\u27s degree students from 17 different autonomous communities. The results indicate a significant lack of knowledge despite the degree of use and consumption, revealing the need for specific actions that require specific digital literacy. In the conclusions, the training axes are provided as a proposal for innovative intervention to be taught in the university environment in a cross-cutting manner.
