Get PDFAbstract: This paper is based on anonymised information taken from online blogs created by students in a translation course taught at Auckland University of Technology (AUT University) as part of their assessment. Auckland is the main destination for entry for both new migrants and refugees and is therefore the dominant region for ethnic diversity. At present, the three main interpreting and translation services in the Auckland area cater to the communicative needs of migrants and refugees representing up to 200 different languages. Students taking this course reflect to some degree the range of ethnic and linguistic communities in the greater Auckland area. Over the past years, translation and interpreting classrooms at AUT have included speakers of Chinese languages, as well as Korean, Japanese, Arabic, Farsi and Vietnamese. This type of multilingual and multicultural classroom has required the development of special language-neutral pedagogies. The current paper describes the use of reflective blogs: students were asked to translate a range of texts involving a variety of culture-specific items (Aixelá, 1996; Davies, 2003) and to use the blogs to reflect on issues identified, resources used and reviewer feedback. The material chosen for translation included a range of texts commonly encountered in public service translation settings; the blog method employed may prove to be beneficial to (student) translators working in public service settings.Resumen: Este artículo está basado en información anonimizada extraída de blogs creados por estudiantes en una asignatura de traducción en la universidad Auckland University of Technology (AUT) como parte de su evaluación. Auckland es el centro con más ingreso de emigrantes y refugiados y de esta manera es la región líder en diversidad étnica. Actualmente, los tres servicios principales de traducción e interpretación en Auckland atienden las dificultades comunicativas de emigrantes y refugiados, representando hasta 200 distintos idiomas. Los estudiantes de esta materia reflejan en cierta medida la diversidad de comunidades étnicas y lingüísticas en la región de Auckland. Durante años, por las clases de traducción e interpretación en AUT han pasado estudiantes de habla coreana, japonesa, árabe, persa, vietnamita como también de dialectos chinos. Este tipo de clase multicultural y multilingüe ha requerido el desarrollo de pedagogías especiales en idioma neutro. Este artículo describe el uso de blogs reflexivos: se le pidió a los estudiantes traducir una variedad de textos que incluían distintos elementos específico-culturales (Aixéla 1996; Davies, 2003) y utilizar sus blogs para reflexionar sobre la identificación de problemas, recursos utilizados y comentarios de crítica de revisión. El material elegido incluyó una variedad de textos que pueden ser encontrados comúnmente en contextos de servicio de traducción publica y el método de blog empleado puede ayudar a (estudiantes) traductores que desempeñan su labor en contextos de servicios públicos.
Formación, Perfiles Profesionales y Grupos de Trabajo en Entornos Sanitarios Multiculturales
Get PDFResumen: en el acceso de población extranjera al sistema sanitario pueden producirse dificultades comunicativas con posibles graves consecuencias para la salud de los pacientes. Por este motivo, en los últimos años surgen figuras de corte social en la esfera de la comunicación, las de los intérpretes o mediadores interculturales, que asisten lingüística y culturalmente al personal sanitario y a los pacientes. En dicha actividad, en el territorio español no se exigen requisitos a nivel curricular. Por ello, estas personas no siempre han recibido formación específica para desarrollar dichas tareas y, en el caso de haberlo hecho, recurren a conocimientos procedentes de planes de formación dispares que impactan en la calidad del servicio proporcionado. A hilo de esta idea, en el artículo se presenta la línea general de un estudio centrado en analizar algunas opciones formativas en interpretación y mediación intercultural sanitarias disponibles en España. Entre estas, se incluyen propuestas de universidades, empresas de servicios lingüísticos y un equipo de mediadores de un centro de salud. Posteriormente, se ofrecen datos sobre otra investigación en curso que, basada en los resultados de la primera, tiene por objetivo proponer métodos para organizar equipos formados por individuos que poseen distintos perfiles profesionales al haberse sometido a itinerarios formativos distintos y, consecuentemente, tienen niveles variables de habilidades, experiencia y autonomía.Abstract: when a foreign individual accesses the healthcare system, communication challenges can occur, with potential serious consequences for the patient’s health. For this reason, new types of social figures have arisen within the field of communication during recent years: healthcare interpreters and intercultural mediators. These individuals help patients and healthcare staff linguistically and culturally. In Spain, there are no academic requirements for these activities. Thus, these individuals have not always received specific training in performing these tasks, and in such cases, they resort to knowledge originating from different training backgrounds, which impacts on the quality of the service provided. In such context, this paper presents the general outline of research focused on examining some training options available in Spain in healthcare interpreting and intercultural mediation. These options include training provided by universities, linguistic service agencies and an intercultural mediators’ team in a health centre. Later in the paper, information is provided regarding an ongoing research project, which is based on the results of the first study. This research aims to propose methods of organizing working groups consisting of individuals with different professional profiles. As they have received different training, these individuals will have gained varying levels of skill, experience and autonomy.
La Emigración Española en Alemania y la Jubilación: Un Análisis desde la Lingüística Migratoria y la Interpretación en los Servicios Públicos
Get PDFResumen: En los últimos años la política alemana en materia migratoria ha experimentado una gran transformación, pasando de no considerarse un país de destino migratorio a principios del siglo XXI a aceptar esta realidad y comprender la necesidad del aprendizaje de la lengua alemana por parte de los y las migrantes como método de integración en la sociedad alemana. Estos cambios, sin embargo, llegan tarde para la primera generación de migrantes de origen español, que llegaron a la República Federal de Alemania en la década de los 60 y 70. En las últimas décadas, estas personas han ido llegando a la edad de jubilación, lo cual trae consigo nuevos retos. El objetivo de este artículo consiste en realizar un análisis sobre la situación lingüística actual de este colectivo desde la perspectiva de la Interpretación en los Servicios Públicos, para lo que se utilizarán conceptos propios de la Lingüística Migratoria.Abstract: In the last years the German migration policy has experienced a remarkable transformation, going from not considering Germany as country of immigration in the beginning of the 21 century to accepting this reality and realising that the social integration of the migrants goes through language learning. These changes, though, came too late for the first generation of Spanish migrants, who arrived in the Federal Republic of Germany in the 1960\u27s and 1970\u27s. In the last decades this people have reached retirement age, which poses new challenges. The aim of this paper is to analyse the current linguistic situation of this group from the perspective of Community Interpreting while making use of some concepts from Migration Linguistics.

Get PDFResumen: La llegada masiva de extranjeros en las últimas décadas ha dado lugar a un nuevo colectivo que acude a los centros sanitarios. El objetivo del presente trabajo es confirmar la hipótesis de que una fase de contacto previa o encuentro extra rutinario entre el intérprete y el profesional sanitario contribuye a una mejora de los resultados en la interpretación en consulta y un aumento en la calidad. Para ello, se estudian factores clave: la comunicación, los roles, el código deontológico, la legislación, la entrevista clínica y la visibilidad. Se ha realizado un estudio observacional, descriptivo con seguimiento y un estudio de caso para conocer las opiniones de los intérpretes profesionales y los profesionales sanitarios. Los resultados confirman la necesidad de un encuentro previo. En este sentido, afirmamos que la interpretación médica es un sector en crecimiento y dada la escasez de estudios sobre estos factores, es aquí donde se engloba el presente estudio. Abstract: The massive arrival of foreign people in the last decades has originated a new group of people with new healthcare needs. The aim of this paper is to ensure the hypothesis that a previous interpreter-doctor contact or an out of the routine encounter contributes to improve the interpreting services during the consultation and it enhances better quality. To that end, some key factors such as communication, roles, code of ethics, law, clinical interview stages and visibility are studied in this research work. We have carried out an observational, descriptive and follow-up study and a case study to discover the opinions of professional interpreters and healthcare professionals. Finally, the previous encounter assumption is confirmed based on the findings of the study. In this sense, medical interpreting constitutes an interesting growing field. This research focuses on the mentioned field due to the lack of studies.
