The Role of Corrective Feedback in Developing Students’ Speaking Skills in EFL Conversation Classes

This study aims to explore students’ perceptions of corrective feedback (CF) in EFL speaking activities and how it contributes to the development of their speaking skills. While many previous studies have focused on teachers’ perspectives and feedback strategies, this research emphasizes the students’ point of view to understand their preferences, emotional responses, and perceived benefits regarding CF. The study employed a quantitative descriptive method using a questionnaire distributed to EFL students. The data were analysed to identify patterns in students’ attitudes toward various types and timings of feedback. The findings reveal that students generally have a positive perception of corrective feedback. Most respondents agreed that CF helps them improve their speaking performance, particularly in areas such as vocabulary, pronunciation, and fluency. Contrary to common concerns among educators, the majority of students did not feel embarrassed or demotivated when corrected. Instead, they reported increased confidence and motivation when their errors were addressed constructively. Furthermore, students expressed a preference for both immediate and delayed feedback, indicating flexibility and awareness of different instructional strategies. The study suggests that corrective feedback plays a significant role in supporting learners’ speaking development. It also highlights the importance of incorporating student perspectives when designing effective feedback practices in EFL classrooms

This study aimes at the implementation of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) in reading questions within the English textbook Bahasa Inggris: Work in Progress for 10th-grade high school students and how is the implementation of HOTS realized in the reading question of the English textbook? HOTS, as emphasized in Indonesia’s Curriculum, is critical for fostering students' analytical, evaluative, and creative abilities to meet 21st-century educational demands. The research employs descriptive qualitative method, data were collected through content analysis, categorizing reading questions based on Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy. A checklist table was used for classification, and the data were analyzed using the Miles & Huberman (1994) model, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results show that 58.3% of the questions fall under HOTS, while 41.7% are LOTS. Among HOTS, Analyzing (C4) is the most frequent, followed by Evaluating (C5) and Creating (C6). While the textbook includes HOTS-based questions, many still focus on factual recall, limiting students' critical thinking development. These findings suggest the need for curriculum improvements to ensure a more balanced integration of HOTS. This study provides insights for educators, policymakers, and textbook authors to enhance English instruction and align it with national educational goals

Full text link
This study aimed to investigate students’ perceptions of using Canva as a learning media in reading argumentative texts. A descriptive qualitative design was employed, involving ten twelfth-grade students of MAN 3 Langkat who had prior experience with Canva in English lessons. Data were collected through an open-ended questionnaire distributed via Google Form and analyzed using Miles (2014) framework of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings revealed that students’ perceptions were divided into positive and negative categories. Seven students (70%) expressed positive perceptions, describing Canva as attractive, motivating, and effective in clarifying argumentative structures such as claims, reasons, and evidence. They explained that Canva’s visuals and templates helped them stay engaged and organize ideas more clearly during reading activities. Three students (30%) expressed negative perceptions, mainly due to slow loading, restrictions caused by premium features, and readability problems when color contrasts between text and background were weak. In terms of reasons for these perceptions, the analysis showed that Canva captured students’ attention through its colorful design (35.7%) and maintained relevance by connecting visuals with their academic needs (28.6%). Confidence (14.3%) was fostered when Canva’s templates supported systematic thinking, but was reduced when poor design made comprehension difficult. Satisfaction (21.4%) was achieved when Canva functioned smoothly, but was undermined when technical problems disrupted learning. These findings imply the importance of balancing Canva’s strengths with its limitations and maximizing its pedagogical potential to support students in reading argumentative texts effectively

English Language Lecturers’ Attitudes Towards E-learning in the Context of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs)

The adoption of e-learning is often deemed essential during emergencies in the Gaza Strip. As a result, Many Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are compelled to transition their classrooms to online delivery. This study, therefore, attempted to investigate the attitudes towards e-learning held by the English Department faculty members at five HEIs in the Gaza Strip-Palestine. The data collection instrument used in this research was the Test of e-Learning Related Attitudes (TeLRA) scale. The collected data were analyzed through means and percentages using SPSS v20 statistical package. The findings show that the participants hold mildly favourable attitudes towards e-learning. It was speculated that lecturers holding mildly favourable attitudes towards e-learning rather than strongly favourable attitudes may be attributed to the lack of training and some other difficulties which may hinder the successful implementation of e-learning in the Gaza Strip HEIs. It is then recommended that training and professional development on e-learning need to be provided to the lecturers in order to raise their awareness of e-learning and its benefits. Further research on lecturers’ attitudes towards e-learning and the difficulties they may encounter while adopting e-learning is essential. Such research may enable lecturers to become aware of their attitudes towards e-learning. It may also help educators and other stakeholders find ways to overcome these difficulties, ultimately supporting the successful implementation of e-learning in the context of the Gaza Strip HEIs
