Why Professional Development Matters: A Case of College Teachers in Karachi
Get PDFThe predominant teachers’ professional development practice in Pakistan can be stated as limited, fragmented, short termed, and pre-packaged as it occurs on margins of having more focus on training sessions rather than problem-solving. This qualitative research aims to share the results of a small-scale study, involving 12 college teachers working in public sector institutions on their perceptions of professional development and the support they get from their educational institutions. It then proposes a three-branched solution that includes: (a) government and institution supported PD; (b) availability and delivery of multiple PD approaches based on the needs assessment of the teachers; and (c) on-going follow-up and evaluation of teachers’ professional development system to suit the local context. This study recommends that effective PD, if considered wisely, can become the process through which educators can examine thoughtfully and critically the purpose, role, structure, and organization of the institutions concerning the increasingly diverse students and communities they serve. The educational field in Pakistan needs a new ethics for PD; one that is sincerely supported and reflected in the educational policies of the country
Green Training and Development Practices on Environmental Sustainability: Evidence from WAMCO PLC
Get PDFGreen training and development practices have been acknowledged as veritable tools for addressing environmental challenges; it is also a key ingredient for promoting the acceptance of environmental conservation in the workplace because in the long run, it helps to creating a win-win situation for both management and employees. To this end, this study examined effect of green training and development practices on environmental sustainability with the objective of examining the effect of developing green abilities on environmental awareness; and examining the relationship between green knowledge and employees’ commitment towards the environment. Data was collected through the quantitative means from 175 employees of WAMCO Nigeria plc. 5Findings revealed that developing green abilities accounts for only 93.7% of variations in environmental awareness. This implies that developing green abilities have positive significant effect on environmental awareness as an indicator of environmental sustainability; in the same vein, there exists a positive and significant relationship between Green Knowledge and Employee Commitment towards the Environment which is a component of Environmental Sustainability with (r=0.942, p-value<0.05). The study concluded that green training and development practices are veritable tools for promoting employees’ consciousness towards the overall achievement of sustainable development goals. Thus, employee engagement and involvement in green activities should be prioritized and strengthened through periodic training and development centered on the attainment of green goals
Grade Retention: Is it a Failed Practice?
Get PDFThis research study was conducted to explore the grade retention practices in private schools of Karachi. The study focused on the impact of grade retention and investigated its effectiveness in terms of its merits versus demerits. The context of the study was six private schools of Karachi and scorecards of the failed students from the selected schools, who were in grade six, seven and eight. To achieve the objectives of the study, a mixed method was undertaken to collect the data. The quantitative data were derived from the scorecards of 84 students of two years, summing to a total of 168 scorecards of 84 failed students, who repeated the class in the same school. Paired sample t-test, one sample t-test and two-way MANOVA were applied to analyze the data. The researcher conducted interviews of six teachers and three principals. The interviews were transcribed and decoded, followed by categorization to explore the themes that emerged. The most crucial finding of the research is that retention and social promotion are ineffective solutions for the struggling learners
Factors Increasing Motivation of Tertiary Level Learners’ In-Class Participation
Get PDFThe prime purpose of this paper is to investigate the motivating factors that make university students participate in classroom activities and these factors correlate with their learning and grades. Furthermore, the study tried to identify whether intrinsic motivational factors drove them more to be part of in-class activities or extrinsic motivational factors. The topic under consideration required a qualitative case study with an exploratory design to identify these factors. The study was based at a renowned private sector university in Karachi. The research study used a purposive sampling method and gathered data by conducting semi-structured short interviews of students and faculty with some probing on the answers. The results led to a list of factors such as pedagogy, motivation, role of faculty attitude, role of student attitude, and marks-driven motivation. The findings support the notion that extrinsic motivators play a significant role in class participation of students at the tertiary levels
Role of Management in Teaching Practices: Private Schools of District Central Karachi

This study focused on the role of school management team in improving teaching practices. Apart from the reviewed literature, an empirical investigation based on a quantitative research was used to collect data from 100 private schools of district Central Karachi. The results of the study revealed that the role of school management for enhance quality teaching practice in private secondary schools of central district Karachi. From this perspective, work climate plays vital role in teacher performance. Furthermore, it is very necessary to value the teaching learning process by helping teachers regard teaching matters. Providing job related resources and facilities are the responsibility of school management. Positive relationship among teaching staff and management staff plays important role in teaching learning process

A two-way approach was opted in this research study that focused on the theoretical and practical aspects of lean warehousing. An indirect relation was found between the implementation of the principles involved in lean approach and productivity of the business. The principles allow the business to grow horizontally and vertically by improving the liquidity of the capital and various other factors. It allows the management to save the blocked capital by a considerable amount and invest it in the horizontal growth of the business. Moreover, by ensuring the safety of the workers and implementation of different approaches such as ABC approach and A3 thinking, it ultimately results in an enhanced productivity. The study throws light on the implications of the old warehousing techniques and approaches and how the efficiency can be improved through a revolutionized approach. English Language Teacher’s Professional Attitude and Classroom Management Parameters
Get PDFEnglish language learning in the context of secondary and higher secondary schools in Pakistan has always been challenging to students and parents alike. This study aimed to explore the classroom management skills and strategies of English language teachers in the capital city of Karachi. Teacher’s motivation stimulates appropriate behavior that ensures teacher’s performance of their duties. This study followed qualitative methods’ parameters to explore the natural phenomena of the participant’s perceptions and experiences. The study was conducted in 15 secondary schools located in Karachi, Pakistan. The findings has shown that further learning opportunities of ELT learning, interaction and exchange of ideas globally, students’ participation in EL learning activities, professional education and in-service trainings are the most influenced motivational factors of secondary schools English Language teachers. Availability of ELT materials, respect from department officers, colleagues, society and parents and demand from students were found necessary skills to operate classrooms apart from professional content knowledge

A Study on Parent’s Attitudes towards the Education of their Daughters
Get PDFThere have been different factors causing the inequality between male and female in access to education. Among all, the cultural and religious traditions and practices in favor of male domination in ruling the societies or states combined with the poor economy have been the most prominent elements. Girl’s enrolment also makes almost half of that of boys in primary level and around one fourth in secondary level as well university. By disaggregating rural, the facts become more shocking, as the girl’s enrolment in secondary levels makes one-tenth of boys in rural population. The low percentage is meant to be due to Co-education and different factors, cultural barriers, economical condition, distance to schools, parents favoring boys to education and so on. Educational theories and past related researches also defined the gap between male and female education in different parental attitude to get a status in the societies. The present study designed to recognize the factors, which do affect the parents’ attitudes towards their daughters’ education. The analysis of data and testing hypotheses was enhanced the research check the validity and reliability in the data. As conclusion to the research was found out that more co-educational institution in society higher will be the unfavorable attitude of parents towards their daughters’ education, it was found out that mother are more expecting their daughter’s education than fathers and it was found out that less income parents have the lack interest of their daughter’s education
