Effects of Threat and Motivation on Classical Musicians’ Professional Performance Practice During the COVID-19 Pandemic
In the past 2 years our world has experienced huge disruptions because of COVID-19. The performing arts has not been insulated from these tumultuous events with the entire music industry being thrown into a state of instability due to the paralyzing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. In this study, we examined how classical professional musicians’ ability to cope with uncertainty, economic struggles, and work-life interplay during COVID-19 was influenced by various factors that affect a crucial part of the development and sustainment of music careers: musicians’ practice. We analyzed responses to an online survey of 309 classical performing musicians from 41 countries in Europe and Latin America across three pandemic stages: immediately before the pandemic, during the pandemic, and when vaccines were being made available and lockdowns were being reduced or lifted. Structural equation modeling indicates relationships between perceptions of threat at the peak of the pandemic and the musicians Self- or External-Based Motivation for the three periods in which respondents were asked to reflect. Findings suggest that musicians who are more internally self-motivated seemed to be more resilient to the pandemic threats and more capable of managing their practicing routines, whereas more externally motivated musicians experienced a reduction in their dedicated time to practice during lockdown. We suggest pedagogical and policy implications, as well as future lines of research that are oriented toward supporting professional musicians in assessing and understanding their motivational drives so that they can cope with situations that disrupt their professional lives
Transformative impacts in the existing curriculum : A study of developing learner agency and broadening career horizons
Establishing a career as a performing classical musician is strongly linked to 1) facing fierce competition during and after professional studies, 2) the ability of developing a multiplicity of skills that go beyond the craft of the instrument/voice, and 3) being flexible/agile to adapt to the constant changes and demands of the music industry. However, music majors seem to realize this towards the end of their studies in higher music education. This leads to an enormous pressure to become employable when they graduate, leaving many to depend on luck and stressful learning on-the-job situations. Considering this situation, higher music education is under political scrutiny, as it should not only produce graduates, but employable ones – thus, maximising revenue generation. This asks for curricular transformations that have the potential to support music students in becoming agentic and embracing a learner identity – that is being artistically and professionally autonomous, and ready to embrace lifelong learning as an exciting part of their careers. This paper presents a socio-constructivist intervention to broaden career horizons and develop the much-required learner agency in 7 classical music majors. Authentic and scaffolded strategies related to employability in the music industry, relevant lectures and seminars of increasing difficulty, as well as a panel discussion with international musicians was offered to all participants as part of their studies during a semester-long class. Preliminary results indicated certain areas for improvement common to all participants such as social interaction and communication skills, variety within and beyond performance roles, and occupational and emotional literacy. Taking that into consideration, resources on critical reflection and career planning were further developed during the study. This supported the participants in embracing a positive attitude to learning, a more inclusive view of career pathways and musical identities, and an openness to discussing concerns with colleagues—all aspects related to musicians’ learner identity

Yhdenvertaisempi musiikkiopisto : musiikkipedagogin intersektionaalinen työote
Seminaarityöni käsittelee yhdenvertaisemman musiikkiopiston mahdollistamista intersektionaalisen pedagogiikan keinoin. Tutkimuksen teoreettinen viitekehys muodostuu feministisestä pedagogiikasta, musiikkipedagogiikasta ja yhdenvertaisuus- ja tasa-arvosäädöksistä. Tutkimus koostuu intersektionaalisuuden käsitteen jäsentämisestä, historiakatsauksesta ja aiemmista tutkimuksista, joihin lukeutuu erityisesti suomalaisen ArtsEqual-hankkeen (2015-2021) tutkimustulokset ja toimenpidesuositukset. Tutkimus on kvalitatiivinen kirjallisuuskatsaus, jossa pyrin kartoittamaan yhdenvertaisuuden nykyistä tilaa musiikkiopistossa ohjeitten ja säädösten puitteissa. Työn tarkoitus on löytää keinoja yhdenvertaisemman musiikkiopisto-opetuksen kehittämiselle ja pohtia, millaista intersektionaalinen pedagogiikka ja millainen intersektionaalinen työote musiikkipedagogilla voisi olla käytännössä
Teaching and learning musical instruments through ICT : the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown
The COVID-19 lockdown in education institutions required music teachers to use ICT to continue teaching. This research study, with the use of a Likert type online questionnaire, analyses the ICT activities carried out during this period and the learning conceptions they reflect. The questionnaire consisted of the description of activities which varied, depending on the learning promoted (reproductive or constructive), the learning outcomes (verbal, procedural, or attitudinal), the type of assessment to which the activities were directed, and the presence of cooperative activities. The teachers had to indicate the frequency with which they carried out these activities. The questionnaire was completed by 254 instrumental music teachers from different types of institutions and different levels. The main study outcome was that teachers used reproductive activities more frequently than constructive ones. We also found that most activities were those favouring verbal learning and assessment. The cooperative activities were the least frequent. Finally, through a cluster analysis, we identified three teaching profiles depending on the frequency and type of ICT used: Passive, Active, and Interpretative. The variable that produced the most consistent differences was previous ICT use
Being with care: dance practice in times of ecosocial crisis
This thesis aims to examine how dance practice can provide a way of being with care. The research methodology focuses on how one can
develop a caring relationship with other worlds through dance practice. The main research question is: What does “being with care” mean in
a time of ecosocial crisis, and how can it be fostered through dance practice? In this thesis, the term dance practice encompasses the act of
movement, the dancing itself, and the choreographic, pedagogical, and improvisational moving-thinking one engages with others.
The theoretical frameworks that support this thesis are from the fields of contemporary feminist, political and phenomenological studies on
care ethics, embodied care, and embodiment. This research focuses on care from ecological, philosophical, and pedagogical perspectives
and understands care as something that exists not only in human relations but also as a responsible and reciprocal way of living with morethan-
human worlds.
This thesis analyses the artistic process of the site-specific dance piece becoming-with and the dance pedagogue-researcher’s embodied
experience of how care was present in the artistic practice. becoming-with is a dance piece about the intertwined and co-evolving
relationship between human and more-than-human worlds. becoming-with was created by choreographer Wilhelmina Ojanen, performers
Hanna Kahrola, Janina Salmela, Wilma Seppälä and Kardo Shiwan, musician Tapani Rinne, lighting designer and technician Jaakko
Sirainen and costume and space designer Mirei Kato, together with the more-than-human worlds involved in the piece. The work premiered
17th of December 2021 at Kenneli D.I.Y indoor skate pool in Hiedanranta, Tampere, and was presented twice more on the 18th and 19th of
December 2021.
The artistic practice of becoming-with unfolded over two months and encompassed spending time together in the studio reading,
conversing, dancing, and working with different materials. Through improvisational dance and somatic practices that invoked the
imagination and invited deeper sensing of the world around oneself, we sought to explore what becoming-with meant for each of us. In this
thesis, the artistic practice of becoming-with is analysed through elements present during the process: The unknown, The senses: touch,
Thinking-together to become otherwise, and Materiality and responsibility. The practice of writing poems was used as an artistic method of
inquiry into the process.
The analysis of the theoretical background and the analysis of the artistic process produced the results of this artistic research as four
guiding principles of being with care. These are embodiment, imagination, attentiveness, and responsibility. The four guiding principles are
intertwined and ultimately propose being with care as a way of approaching living and creating in times of ecosocial crisis.
The guiding principles of being with care will be further defined and developed in my future work as a choreographer and dance educator
Pienet teot, suuri hurma : toimijuus kulttuurisessa vanhustyössä
Suomalainen yhteiskunta on monella tavalla murroksessa: väestö ikääntyy, hyvinvointi
polarisoituu ja työelämä kuormittaa tekijöitään. Selvitäksemme muutoksessa
tarvitsemme uudenlaisia toimintakulttuurisia ja rakenteellisia ratkaisuja. Taide ja
kulttuuri voivat osaltaan tarjota ratkaisuja ikääntyneiden tarvitsemien palvelujen
tuottamisen ja hyvinvoinnin haasteisiin.
Tutkin tohtorin tutkinnossani vanhuspalveluissa toteutettua musiikki- ja kulttuuritoimintaa,
toisin sanoen kulttuurista vanhustyötä, toimijuuden käsitteen avulla.
Koska toimijuus muotoutuu sosiaalisessa vuorovaikutuksessa ja siihen tarjoutuvat
mahdollisuudet näyttäytyvät erilaisina eri rooleissa olevien henkilöiden näkökulmista,
lähestyn toimijuutta 1) musiikin ammattilaisen (itseni), 2) ikääntyneiden, 3)
hoivatyöntekijöiden sekä 4) vanhustyön lähiesimiesten lähtökohdista. Toimijuuden
käsitteen avulla tutkin sitä, kuinka edellä mainitut henkilöt vaikuttavat musiikilla ja
muulla kulttuuritoiminnalla vanhuspalveluiden arkeen. Lisäksi tutkin, millaiset tekijät
mahdollistavat ja rajoittavat edellä mainittujen ryhmien toimijuuden rakentumista
kulttuurisessa vanhustyössä.
Musiikin tohtorin opinnäytekokonaisuuteni koostuu kolmesta osiosta: 1) Kahden
kulttuurihyvinvointipalvelun – Musiikkimoottorit ja Kulttuurikuntouttajat – yhteiskehittäminen, 2) Neljä tieteellistä artikkelia, joissa käsittelin kokemuksiani laulamisen voimaannuttavasta vaikutuksesta (2010), kuvasin ja analysoin palvelukeskuksen asiakkaiden musiikillista toimijuutta (2015), hoivatyöntekijöiden taidelähtöistä toimijuutta (2015) ja vanhustyön lähiesimiesten musiikillista toimijuutta (2017), 3) Yhteenvetoraportti.
Tutkimusprosessin aikana kehitin uuden menetelmällisen lähestymistavan, kehittävän
etnografian, jossa yhdistyy autoetnografia, osallistava etnografia ja kehittävä työote.
Tutkimuksen aineisto on tuotettu kehittävän etnografian keinoin osana Musiikkimoot-
torit- ja Kulttuurikuntouttajat-palvelujen yhteiskehittämisprosesseja. Analyysin tein
teemoitellen aineistoa artikkeleissa aineistolähtöisesti ja yhteenvedossa erityisesti Sidsel
Karlsenin (2011) ja Jyrki Jyrkämän (2008) toimijuuden määrittelyihin tukeutuen.
Tutkimuksessa olen tunnistanut kuusi kulttuurisessa vanhustyössä esiin nousevaa toimijuuden ilmenemismuotoa.
In many ways Finnish society is undergoing a transformation: the population is ageing,
the ability to achieve well-being is polarised, and working life is increasingly burdening
its employees. In order to survive these changes, we need new kinds of operational and
structural solutions. The fields of arts and culture can contribute to the efforts to produce
innovative and effective services and a sustainable sense of well-being for older people.
In my doctoral dissertation, I studied musical and cultural activities in elderly services,
i.e. cultural elderly care, through the concept of agency. Since agency takes shape within
social interactions, and the opportunities offered by it can differ according to the unique
perspectives of persons working within their individual roles, I approach agency from
four different starting points: 1) the music professional (myself), 2) the elderly, 3) the care
workers, and 4) the immediate superiors in the elderly care system. Using the concept
of agency, I studied how the aforementioned persons can influence the everyday life of
elderly care through music and other cultural activities. In addition, I examine the factors
that enable and restrict the development of the agency of the above groups in cultural
elderly care.
My dissertation consists of three sections: 1) the co-development of two cultural welfare
services, Music Motors and Cultural Rehabilitators; 2) four scientific articles, in which I
first explored my experiences with the empowering effect of singing (2010), and wherein I
then described and analysed the musical agency of the service centre’s customers (2015), the art-oriented agency of care workers (2015), and the musical agency of the immediate superiors in the elderly care system (2017); 3) a Summary Report of the whole development project.
During the research process I developed a new methodological approach – which I call
developmental ethnography – that combines autoethnography, participatory ethno-
graphy, and developing workplace practices. The research data was produced by means
of developing ethnography as part of the co-development processes of the Music Motors
and Cultural Rehabilitators programs. I carried out the analysis by theming the material
that was databased for the articles, and in the summarizing process I especially relied on
the definitions of agency by Sidsel Karlsen (2011) and Jyrki Jyrkämä (2008).
In this research, I have identified six manifestations of agency that emerge in cultural
elderly care. These include aesthetic, emotional, body-related, competence-related, identity-related, and transformation-related agency. Since agency is always contingent upon the individual situation at hand and its historical context, I have also charted the factors that enabled, outlined, and shaped the manifestation of agency in the cultural activities carried out in elderly services. These factors include functional ability, competence, emotions and valuations, motivation, laws and regulations, and material and temporal resources.
Actors in cultural elderly care can influence the experiences and everyday interactions of
those within the system with music, culture, and art activities, and are thus able to reform
the overall practices of caring and housing services. Based on the results of this research, cultural elderly care can provide a platform to manifest, identify, develop, strengthen, and study the diverse forms of agency active in this environment. The research describes, analyses, and theorizes the diverse types of agency in cultural elderly care, and thus provides additional information to those who wish to develop musical and cultural activities in elderly services, or who might want to support the agency of the clients and employees of elderly services through other means.fi=ei tietoa saavutettavuudesta|sv=okänd tillgänglighet|en=unknown accessibility
Opettajan oma praktinen teoria pianonsoiton opetuksessa : autoetnografinen tutkimus instrumenttiopetuksen kontekstissa
Maisterin tutkielmassani tutkin opettajan pedagogista ajattelua praktisen teorian käsitteen avulla.
Tutkimus toteutettiin havainnoimalla autoetnografisesti pianotunteja, joita pidin yhdelle oppilaalle tutkimusjakson ajan.
Teksti pohjaa hiljattain ilmestyneeseen tutkielmaani Logomimesis, Tutkielma esiintyvästä ruumiista. (Tutkijaliitto 2020) Artikkeli pyrkii summaamaan teoksen keskeiset argumentit yleistajuisella tavalla, samalla kun se avaa teoksen problematiikan laajemmalle taiteiden väliselle keskustelulle ja taiteen tutkimukselle
Zagreb, London, Berlin, New York : The Origins of the Record Industry in Croatia (1902-1939)
The record industry grew rapidly between 1900 and 1914. Although record production was concentrated in the largest industrialised countries, companies set out to create a global market by recording songs in all major languages. Typically, they sent their engineers on expeditions which took them to major European cities. They made recordings with local artists selected by the company’s local representatives. The recording masters were shipped to a factory to be processed, and the finished pressings sent back to local retailers. The paper will discuss in detail the activities of the Gramophone Company (UK), which made at least 500 recordings in Zagreb and Osijek between 1902 and 1913. The company had several competitors, including the German Lindström group (Odeon, Beka, Parlophon) and Pathé in France, and their activities will also be considered. The Great War caused a break in recording, but after the war the companies returned. Gramophone was back in Zagreb in 1924, and the Germans followed. A new peak in global record sales was reached in 1929.
Meanwhile, American record companies, especially Victor and Columbia, created large catalogues of »foreign-language« records for immigrants, including Croatian-Americans. They also issued material recorded by their European associates, such as Gramophone Co., for the American market. The early record industry had been dominated by a small number of multi-national companies which held the basic patents on recording technology. After World War I, local enterprises also entered the market, as independent record companies were started in smaller countries such as Sweden (Sonora), Latvia (Bellaccord), Czechoslovakia (Esta) and Yugoslavia (Edison Bell Penkala)
