Kirkkomuusikko kahden tulen välissä : Taideyliopiston Sibelius-Akatemian 35 kirkkomusiikin koulutusohjelma ammattiin valmistavana koulutusohjelmana

Understanding the musical identity and career thinking of postgraduate classical music performance students
The classical music sector faces an urgent challenge as increasing numbers of performance graduates struggle to establish themselves as full-time professional musicians. In part, this situation relates to narrow higher music education curricula that do not sufficiently prepare musicians for the precarious and nonlinear careers that characterize music work. The study reported here employed Version 1 of the Musical Identity Measure (MIMv1) together with three open-ended questions to explore student musicians’ motivations to engage in music and their career-related meaning-making. A lexicometry analysis based on Bayesian statistics was applied to six psychological and environmental areas identified in MIMv1: (1) resilience and adaptability, (2) approach to learning, (3) emotional attachment, (4) social factors, (5) music and self, and (6) career calling. Results indicate that postgraduate classical music performance students have a strong musical calling and emotional attachment to music. They also recognize the importance of identifying themselves as learners to thrive in the profession, and they accept that the development of social capital, resilience, and adaptability needs attention both during their studies and during their professional life. The article presents recommendations for higher music education and identifies potential risks related to strong identification with music
Tehokas urkuharjoittelu
Tämä kirjallinen työ pureutuu urkujensoitossa pitkällä olevien urkureiden harjoittelukäytäntöihin. Työ käsittelee yleishyödyllisiä tehokkaita harjoittelukäytäntöjä, harjoitteluprosessin eri vaiheita, motivaatiota sekä jalkiosoiton yleisiä piirteitä. Mentaaliharjoittelu on rajattu pois laajuutensa vuoksi.
Tutkimuskysymykset ovat: Miten urkujensoittoa voi harjoitella tehokkaasti? Millaisia työkaluja on olemassa tehokkaaseen ja aikaa säästävään harjoitteluun? Tutkimuksen teoreettinen viitekehys koostuu musiikin harjoittelemista koskevasta kirjallisuudesta, empiirinen osuus taas Taideyliopiston Sibelius-Akatemian kahden urkujensoiton opettajan haastatteluista suullisin ja soivin vastauksin.
Harjoittelulle on hyvä asettaa selkeä päämäärä.

Reconstruction of the arts sector : roadmap for a sustainable future
This report has been conducted as part of the Arts Sector Reconstruction Programme launched by the University of the Arts Helsinki. The main purpose of the review work was to produce information on how to build a sustainable future for the arts sector for the use of the “Future of the Cultural Sector” working group set by Minister Antti Kurvinen.
The goal of the study was to identify transition paths that will lead the arts sector to a sustainable future by reflecting on sustainability challenges and possible solutions, especially from the perspective of the independent arts sector. The premise of the review was to focus primarily on finding solutions that would not depend on the growth of public funding for the arts.
The review work was carried out between autumn 2021 and spring 2022. Material was gathered through 20 interviews, 157 responses to an online questionnaire and two workshops. As part of the review work, the Center for Cultural Policy Research Cupore compiled a summary of research results and statistics presenting the effects of the pandemic as well as the central support methods that were applied in Finland and in European benchmarks. Background information was gathered from notes and material that were compiled during Kulta ry’s “Future Tour” around Finland as well as from relevant research results, reports and strategy documents.
Findings from the material highlight the fact that the structural problems and deficiencies in the field are even more significant than the acute crisis caused by the pandemic. However, the arts and cultural sector has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic and the consequent restrictions. The research material shows a strong experience of injustice and lack of appreciation and a weakened trust in public authorities.
The analysis of sustainability challenges was followed by the outlining of four transition paths that would lead to a more sustainable future: 1) sustainable earning methods, 2) art as part of society, 3) renewal through unprecedented events and 4) post-pandemic measures. Central capabilities that are needed for reaching the goals under each path are discussed in the report.fi=ei tietoa saavutettavuudesta|sv=okänd tillgänglighet|en=unknown accessibility
Experienced workload, stress, and coping among professional students in higher music education : An explanatory mixed methods study in Finland and the United Kingdom
Proactive coping styles may help students deal with their study workload and stress in healthier ways. In this explanatory mixed methods study, data were gathered among professional students in higher music education in Finland and the United Kingdom about their experiences of workload, stress, and proactive coping. Bivariate analyses were used to explore prevalence of study workload, stress, and seven proactive coping styles among genders, levels of degree, genre groups, and study programs, and investigate whether stress is predicted by study workload and proactive coping styles. Music students’ lived experiences were analyzed to find the determinants of their workload, stress, and coping. Results indicate significant differences between genders and study programs and specific concerns for music students, such as working alongside studying and physical and psychological problems. Higher music education institutions can utilize this evidence to better support music students in their studies and professional careers
Tutkimuskysymykseni on:
The touch of words : obscure spatial encounters
This article addresses the touch of words on corporeality in reading, performing, and writing in an artistic research project. Here, touch refers to forms of listening, perceiving, moving, and writing triggered by Finnish people’s written memories and experiences concerning mental hospitals. The article, which forms part of the outcome of a multidisciplinary research project titled Engraved in the body, is based on the effects on the researcher of reading these written accounts. Through their inexplicable touch, their obscurity, these memories have haunted, fascinated, and driven the artist-researcher to perform and write in a way which, while not ‘knowing’ anything, nevertheless acknowledges the unpredictable affective touch of memories. This has led the writer and performer to experience infinite spatialities in which conscious acts are replaced by the resonance of memories, generating in turn a kind of non-personal corporeality for transmitting something in them that is hidden or inexpressible through traces of their touch on corporeality. Throughout the process of reading these memories, the continuous practice of a somatic movement technique, the Skinner Releasing Technique (SRT), with its poetic vocabulary and notion of the spatiality of corporeality enabled exposure and attunement to the quality of the written memories of others and to the silence beyond them. Alongside SRT, this article draws specifically on the insights of Maurice Blanchot and Jean-Luc Nancy to articulate the lived relation between corporeality, language, and writing
From Bohemia to the Balkans : Towards a Socioeconomic History of Itinerant Women Musicians, 1860–1889
In recent years, there has been an upsurge of academic publications on the history of women’s work in music. They have, however, remained concentrated on so-called Western art music. In this article, I challenge this paradigm by examining women musicians from the Ore Mountains region in northwestern Bohemia during the late nineteenth century. These women did not have access to conservatoire-level education and made their careers in restaurant orchestras. What were their backgrounds like, and what were the socioeconomic preconditions in this line of work? Methodologically, this research combines microhistory and feminist historical sociology. First, an analysis of the socioeconomic position of musicians in the region is conducted. Second, a case study on Theresia Elster (1848–1866), a flautist, is examined. The source material consists of archival evidence such as estate inventories and vital records. My key argument is that these women musicians should be studied in a sociohistorically nuanced way. On the one hand, musical careers offered women the possibility of climbing up the social ladder. On the other hand, their professional endeavours were limited by patriarchal power structures. Thus, the nexus of social class and gender forms a crucial element that should be further theorised in music historiography
Playing in the Creative State : Michael Chekhov and piano performance in dialogue
Situated within the paradigm of artistic research, this thesis constitutes the final
component of a doctoral research project in piano performance. Propelled by
questions about how musicians within the domain of Western Classical Music
may enliven their engagement with repertoire and develop a practice of creative
freedom and imaginative play, this work investigates the application of the
psychophysical acting technique of Michael Chekhov (1891–1955) to pianistic
practice and to music performance more broadly. It utilises embodied research
methods and reflective analysis to examine the ways in which a Chekhovian
approach may awaken the musician’s embodied experience of movement, develop
the imagination, and open the door to a ‘creative state’ for music-making
characterised by freedom, play, and connection to the present moment. Utilising
Rautavaara’s Sonata No. 2 The Fire Sermon as a case study, this work examines
the potential of the Chekhov technique to guide and synthesise the creative
process of preparing repertoire for performance. Taking a broader view, this work
situates Chekhov within understandings emerging from music performance and
creativity studies and reconceptualises music performance to reflect the integral
role of the imaginatively embodied musician.
My research makes a significant original contribution to knowledge in three ways.
Firstly, it is the first interdisciplinary study of Michael Chekhov technique
undertaken from the perspective of instrumental music performance. While
interdisciplinary research into Chekhov is growing (with recent work discussing
its application to dance, design, therapeutic and community contexts, to name a
few), intersections with instrumental music performance have not been explored.
Secondly, it offers to performing musicians a new methodology for embodied
practice. Embodied perspectives are gaining traction within the scholarly
literature in music performance studies, with this domain primarily concerned
with the ways in which embodied knowledge may make valuable contributions to
music (performance) analysis. My research utilises and develops embodied
knowledge not for analytical purposes, but for the purpose of enriching and
deepening embodied practice itself. Thirdly, it develops a new conceptual model
for music performance. Building upon the work of scholars including Nicholas
Cook, John Rink and Lawrence Kramer, I develop a conceptual model for music
performance that highlights its essentially collaborative nature. This new model,
Embodied Imaginative Collaboration, describes the synergistic web of elements
that constitute music performance and the imaginatively embodied musician’s
role within it. It positions the Chekhov technique as both a conceptual frame
(highlighting the synergies between Chekhov and current views in embodied
creativity studies) and as a practical methodology for musical embodiment in and
