Castles versus Cheerleaders: The Clash of Old and New Power Values and Their Effect on the Role of the Conductor
All forms of leadership are currently undergoing change, as digitalization, democratization, and increased transparency have led to a shift in social values and a realignment of influence disassociated from power. Power is shifting in the world; old leadership models are clashing with new leadership models. The article presents an analysis of the role of the conductor using the new power compass framework to discuss the drivers of change in the future of ensemble and orchestral direction and their programming to support diversity and inclusion
Taiteellis-pedagoginen praktiikka oliona : tanssipedagogi pohtii työnsä suhdetta mahdollisten merkitysten ilmaantumiseen
Opinnäytetyöni kirjallisessa osassa kuvaan taiteellis-pedagogisen praktiikkani oliollisia piirteitä keskittyen muutamaan merkitykselliseen ilmaantumisen hetkeen (= alalukujen nimet).
MFA thesis project
My master’s degree research project focuses on printmaking processes and materials, while emphasising the relationship between tangible and invisible components along with transformations of the various stages creating print-based artwork. With this body of work I explore the relationship between the maker and the material in the context of materiality, mechanical print processes as well as the interpretations of matrices.
Written component of my thesis project presents insights from my research in four parts. Foreword is followed by chapters titled Two Bodies and Borderspace, dedicated to each of the artistic components. Recollection concludes the artistic exploration and working methods.
Two Bodies was displayed at the Kuvan Kevät degree exhibition 04.05-02.06.2019 at
Exhibition Laboratory, Helsinki. The artwork explores bodily contact in the context of print media through the process of lithography and printmaking vocabularly. I engage with surfaces in print discourse and explore meanings as well as transformations they produce in the event of a contact. Informed by etymological and technical interpretations of matrix, and view it as a surface of reproduction, while juxtapositioning the surface of my own female body and a lithographic limestone used for printing. Working method and artistic process is
analysed through subchapters: Connecting bodies, Contact event, Impressions, and
Embodiment.
My second thesis exhibition Borderspace was shown in the Gallery Project Room in
Helsinki 22.02-08.03.2020. The body of work continues to follow an imprinting action in the papermaking process and delve into the agentic intentions of the human and inanimate bodies involved. I explore the methodology, maintenance and thing-power essential to my practice, and further analyse the ephemeral nature of contact as well as the material itself. Through subchapters I delve into these vital aspects of my work, each titled accordingly: Method, Force of Things, Care and Separation.
Printmaking is a complex language. It intertwines materials and materialities, etymological and technical interpretations of terminology involved, together with haptic as well as cognitive bodily connection. Through exploring ideas of material and materiality, along with the meeting points and connections between these elements, I seek to grasp the matter and presence of a touch as well as the inevitable loss of it
The roles of live-electronics in the chosen electroacoustic solo instrument works
In the scope of the research on Western Art Music, the analysis of electroacoustic music is a sparsely crowded subfield. As yet an emerging field, electroacoustic music is not studied with generally agreed methodology. On the contrary, the analytical tools are continuously evolving, and new research attempts to find methodology better suited to the analysis of electroacoustic music as opposed to the Western Art Music analysis tradition. The existing research on electroacoustic music, also, mostly focuses on the music-technological aspects and computing or the experiences of a performer on working with the digital system. The creative usage of electronics and their purpose is rarely studied.
This work studies three electroacoustic pieces with acoustic solo instruments and live-electronics from the aspect of roles. The study attempts to answer to the research questions on the roles live-electronics are given, how the electronics interact with solo instruments, and their relation. In addition, it is speculated whether the pieces could exist without the electronics. By this study, attention is drawn to the electronics as a meaningful and crucial element for defining the characteristics of a piece, not only acting in the background. The study is approached with score and aural analysis, the latter seen particularly important for the analysis of electroacoustic music.
The results of this work highlight the importance of the live-electronics, acting in various roles alongside a solo acoustic instrument. The versatile roles appear in several categories, from perceptional to timbral. Moreover, live-electronics are a crucial element for the characteristic of a piece. The findings indicate that the compositional usage of live-electronics in art music is worth further and more detailed study. The work also demonstrates the value of aural analysis for the research on electroacoustic music
Performing and thinking with trees
How to collaborate with other beings we share this planet with is a central task for artists today.
The starting point for these texts was the realization that we must find ways of relating to the environment that are meaningful from the perspectives of the ecological crisis and a new-materialist and post-humanist understanding of our place in the world. They suggest that artistic research can contribute by allowing for and generating hybrid forms of performing and thinking.
Performing and Thinking with Trees summarises the various strategies of lens-based work used in two artistic research projects by Annette Arlander, namely Performing with Plants (2017–2019) and Meetings with Remarkable and Unremarkable Trees (2020–2021). The focus of these essays is on artistic practices, enhanced by some philosophical discussions related to vegetal life. They seek to contribute to critical plant studies as well as to demonstrate what the outputs of artistic research beyond doctoral work might look like.I Introduction --

Affective images
In this written part of my master thesis I approach the making of choreography through what I call affective images. I use the artistic part of my thesis, Huldra, as an example of how I have worked with affective images and how I wish to work with them in the future. Both the structure and the content of this thesis fluctuate between the inside and the outside of the artistic work, inspired by the image of the Möbius strip as presented by philosopher Elizabeth Grosz. As theoretical discussion partners I use e.g. philosopher Brian Massumi’s writings to contextualize my use of the word ‘affect’ and writings by painter Tarja Pitkänen-Walter, film critic Laura U. Marks and performance researcher Ric Allsopp to contextualize my use of the word ‘image’.
In chapter 1, I go through the process of making Huldra and lay out a base for the reflection further on. At the end of the first chapter I introduce the idea of the Möbius strip and explain how I use it for describing the interactions between making and writing as well the flow of affects in choreography.
In chapter 2, I elaborate on what I mean with the concept of affective images in dialogue with theory and suggest how it can be dealt with in the practice of choreography
In the third chapter, I describe three scenes from Huldra in detail, painting affective images from the piece for the reader through text. I will elaborate on what constitutes affective images in those scenes and I will propose a seed of a method for how to work with affective images in the future.
In the final chapter, I will speculate upon the possibility of making Huldra again and the choices I would take after having written this thesis and thoroughly reflected on my artistic interests.Tässä maisterintutkinnon opinnäytteen kirjallisessa osiossa lähestyn koreografian tekemistä affektiivisten kuvien kautta.
Kolmannessa luvussa kuvailen kolmea Huldran kohtausta yksityiskohtaisesti, piirtäen affektiivisia kuvia lukijalle tekstin keinoin. Pohdin, miten affektiiviset kuvat syntyvät näissä kohtauksissa ja ehdotan metodin siementä työskentelylle affektiivisten kuvien parissa tulevaisuudessa.
Viimeisessä luvussa leikittelen mahdollisuudella tehdä Huldra uudestaan ja pohdin, millaisia valintoja tekisin nyt, kirjoitettuani tämän opinnäytteen ja pohdittuani taiteellisia kiinnostuksenkohteitani perusteellisest
Saa suorittaa! : suorittaminen näyttelijäntaiteessa – ja kuinka taistella sitä vastaan
Saa suorittaa! on tutkielmani näyttelijän suorittamisesta.
Avaan Brownin tutkimusta hänen kirjansa Uskalla haavoittua kautta.

Effects of Passion, Experience, and Cultural Politics on Classical Musicians’ Practice During the COVID-19 Pandemic
The widespread cancelation of cultural events during the early 2020 stages of the COVID-19 pandemic led professional performing musicians across the world to experience an increasing economic fragility that threatened their health and wellbeing. Within this “new normal,” developing countries have been at a higher risk due to their vulnerable health systems and cultural policies. Even in such difficult times, the music profession requires musicians to keep up their practicing routines, even if they have no professional commitments. This is because high level technical and expressive skills are crucial to sustaining a music career at a high performance level. However, it could be expected that not all musicians might have had the same engagement with music practice during lockdowns. In this study, we studied the experiences of 309 professional classical musicians based in European and Latin American countries with different levels of performing experience to examine their passionate (or lack thereof) engagement with music practice. Through the mixed methods combination of multigroup invariance and narrative analyses, we identified distinct profiles of musicians who displayed more harmonious or more obsessive passion orientations before and at the peak of the pandemic. We observed that musicians with higher levels of harmonious passion in particular were more capable of sustaining their practice at the peak of the pandemic and that these musicians were mostly located in Latin America—a paradox, considering that cultural politics supporting the careers of professional performing musicians and entrepreneurial education in Latin America are lacking to a great extent, especially in comparison with the European context. We explain this in terms of the “forced” self-management embraced by musicians in Latin American countries who want to engage with music practice both before and during the COVID-19 pandemic even if the music profession does not generate enough revenue for them
