The Impact of Teaching Conceptions and Practices in Elementary Level Musical Instrument Learning
Previous chapters have suggested that to change the way in which music is taught, and specifically instrumental music, as prescribed, the students need to be able to learn music in new ways
Arkihuolesi kaikki heitä? Vielä kerran kysymyksestä cis vai a Leevi Madetojan Joululaulussa, op. 20b n:o 5
The melody of the well-known Christmas song Joululaulu op. 20b n:o 5 “Arkihuolesi kaikki heitä” (1916) by Leevi Madetoja has rarely been questioned, even though there are two later autographic variants, one from Suvivesper (1924) and the other from the composer’s own arrangement of the song for mixed choir (1944). The editor of Leevi Madetoja’s Solo Songs and Duets (Fennica Gehrman, 2013), Kimmo Tammivaara, made the controversial decision to alter the melody in bar 14 of Joululaulu to make it correspond with the later versions. Which one of the variants is “right”? Is it even possible to find a definite answer to this question? From the music philological point of view the answer is clear. Looking at the later variants, there is no reason to doubt the original melody. The question of why Madetoja’s arrangement for mixed choir differs from the original is more complex, and the answer might lie in the composer’s alcoholism and life circumstances in the 1940s. The question of the composer’s ability to work during his final years raises philosophical and ethical issues, with necessary implications for the new critical editions of his works. The composer’s “final intentions” may not necessarily have been his best intentions
Unelmia kohtaamisesta : teatteriopettajan pohdintaa empatian ja kehollisuuden vaikutuksesta taideopetukseen
Opinnäytteeni aiheena on kohtaaminen taideopetuksessa kehollisesta näkökulmasta käsin katsellen. Kohtaaminen on minulle taideopettajuuteni ydin.
Tutkielmani kiinnostuksen kohteena on, missä määrin kohtaaminen lähtee meistä kehollisina olentoina.
Työni alussa avaan lukijalle syyt siihen, miksi olen kiinnostunut kohtaamisesta. Matkaan hetkeksi menneisyyteeni kohtaajana.
Healthcare musicians and musico-emotional work : An in-depth case study within the context of end-of-life care
The purpose of this in-depth case study is to explore the work of musicians in end-of-life care. In this study, a healthcare musician is considered to be a professional who has both an academic degree in music and in-service training in music and healthcare settings. In addition to working with healthcare personnel, they often collaborate with music therapists to provide integrated healthcare services for the best patient care. In the study, six musicians who had experience in end-of-life care settings were interviewed. Their reflections on their socially engaged work were analysed through the emerging theoretical lens of emotional work. This resulted in the identification of three themes beyond that of pure performativity in music professionalism, relating to the emotional work in end-of-life care. Furthermore, the emotional processes that were encountered, which were deeply social in nature, were conceptualised as musico emotional work. This other-centred work aligns with music therapy research, and is an essential part of music therapists’ end-of-life work. In conclusion, the similarities between music therapists and musicians, as well as the interprofessional potential of their cooperation, are reflected upon
Echoes in the body : understanding deaf embodiment
In this thesis, I consider the corporeality of a deaf person in the context of theatre pedagogy. I approach the subject through the framework of embodied learning and holistic conception of human beings, looking for answers to questions such as how deaf bodies are in this world, and how deaf bodies think. With these questions, I seek to find new practices in my own artistic and pedagogical practice that I can use to develop deaf-based learning environments and performative spaces. These pedagogical and performative spaces are not based on the laws of the theatrical tradition of the hearing people, such as sound and speech, but seek to free the deaf from a constant cycle of adaptation and reasonable adjustments towards selfdetermined corporeality, theatre, and aesthetics.
My thesis work was divided into two parts: it includes an empirical data collection part and a written study part. In the practical part of the thesis, I conducted a total of four days of art pedagogical laboratory at the Theatre Academy and yoga studio Joogaholiaa, where we studied embodiment and corporeality with five other deaf signers. I approached the laboratory work in such a way that instead of asking precise questions, I let the work to proceed according to the interests of both the group and myself, and I observed what this laboratory brought to the surface. The research method thus became echoes in the body, in which my own position as an art pedagogue-researcher was determined through continuous cycle of presence, listening, and reflection. In the written part of the thesis, I present the findings made during the laboratory and reflect on the deaf embodiment in the light of my personal experiences and observations. I discuss, among other things, the embodied trauma experienced by the deaf, the contradictions between the deaf and the hearing lifeworlds that have occurred in different teaching situations, and aside of verbal or signed input what else can an instruction be.
This thesis aims to participate in art pedagogical and norm-critical discussions about, among other things, the role of art pedagogy and the representation in performing arts. In support of my reflection, I use the central ideas of Paulo Freire’s critical pedagogy and bell hooks’ engaged pedagogy. The aim of this thesis is not to produce or present generalizable information about the embodiment of the deaf, but its perspective is experiential and reflective
Continuous Exposition in Mozart's Slow Chamber-Music Movements
The literature on continuous exposition is characterised by two features: (1) concentration on the music of Haydn and (2) the examination of fast movements. This essay deviates from these starting points by examining Mozart's slow movements. The aim is to give close readings of a small number of works taken from a limited corpus rather than to provide an overview of Mozart's slow continuous expositions. The works concerned are the slow movements of three- and four-movement chamber-music works composed after 1775. Of the 42 slow movements in this corpus there are three with a continuous exposition: Larghetto from the Quintet for Piano and Winds, K. 452 (1784), Larghetto from the Quintet for Clarinet and Strings, K. 581 (1789), and Adagio from the String Quintet, K. 593 (1790). These expositions are analysed, and each of them is paired with another exposition from Mozart's slow chamber-music works that features elements leading in K. 452, K. 581 and K. 593 to continuous organisation. The similarities notwithstanding, these expositions are interpreted as two-part
In the shadows : Phenomenological choreographic writing
This article introduces a piece of choreographic writing. It likewise discusses the kind of site-specific choreographic process of opening up to what in everyday life is not apparent and left in the shadows that generated the writing. The objective of the choreographic process was to allow the impact of the bodily sense of being in contact with an urban location to permeate the authors’ activities in writing. To support this intention, they generated a phenomenologically informed performative score of experimental writing that aims at appreciating the vitality of the sensuous. The first part of the submission presents the actual choreographic writing as an evocative piece of choreography that can be read independently of the second part. This latter part contains an exploration into conceptions about choreography and writing. Here, the article draws specifically on Jean-Luc Nancy’s insights to articulate the kind of phenomenological approach the authors engaged in. It aims at establishing their artistic process as a phenomenologically oriented method in expanded choreography and argues that the writing they generated exscribes their encounter with the Hakaniemi bank in Helsinki on a late December day. It likewise details the significance the body bears on their take on choreographic writing and points towards the manner in which this writing contains traces of the inexpressible and non-thinkable
Tämän tutkielman tavoitteena on tarkastella nuorten kokemuksia jännittämisestä erilaisissa musiikillisissa konteksteissa. Tutkimuskysymykseni ovat:
1. Millaisia jännittämisen kokemuksia haastateltavilla nuorilla on musiikillisen toiminnan yhteydessä?
2. Millaisia syitä, seurauksia ja selviytymiskeinoja jännittämiseen nuoret nimeävät?
Tutkimukseni on laadullinen tapaustutkimus, jossa aineisto on kerätty haastattelemalla kolmea nuorta.
Esiintymistilanteissa huomio on kääntynyt itseen: miten esiintyminen sujuu, miltä jännitys tuntuu. Läheisten tuki ja myönteiset esiintymiskokemukset vaikuttivat olevan voimakkain jännitystä helpottava tai nuorta tukeva tekijä. Nuoret suhtautuvat jännittämiseen luonnollisena osana musiikin harrastamista.
