    No full text
Tutkimukseni on lähestymistavaltaan laadullinen tapaustutkimus.

Jokaisen maalauksen keskellä on ihmishahmo. Kuva ihmisestä on toiminut asetelmanani maalaamiselle opintojeni ajan.

Maisterinäyttelyssä olevassa teoskokonaisuudessa minulla on esillä neljä yksittäistä teosta. Yksi on silkkinen seinävaate, joka on ripustettu puusta veistettyjen käsien varaan ja lisäksi on kolme kappaletta silkkimaalausta, joista on ommeltu (ompelijan avustuksella) erilaisia lyhythihaisia t-paitoja erään työvaatteena käytetyn t-paidan mittojen mukaan. Näyttelyssä esillä oleva seinävaate on nimeltään Essential Vortex ja “paitateokset” ovat nimetty seuraavasti: Work/Shirt I-III eli suomeksi Työ/Paita I-III. Maisterin opinnäytteessä käsittelen seuraavia aiheita: materiaalivalinnat maisterinäyttelyssä olevassa Post-Penelope Era (for O.) -teoskokonaisuudessa, pohdintoja taideteoksien formaatista, ajatuksia taidepraktiikasta ja identiteetistä.

Baran Caginli- MFA Thesis Written Component

My thesis project, Baking Books, is a performative, edible sculpture work based on the story of my family in the context of politics, exchanging knowledge, and sharing. The project’s elements are ceramic baking moulds, leaflets, and baked breads in the form of Lenin, Marx, and Rosa Luxemburg, which were shared among the visitors at the opening of the Kuvan Kevät master’s degree show, in Helsinki (6.5–4.6.2023). My supervisor has been Minna Henriksson and the examiners are Bassam El Baroni and Jaana Kokko. Baking Books was exhibited in the main gallery space Kuva/Tila. This project has been a discovery of the physical potential of the bread/ dough as a sculptural medium. In addition to the sculpture, the project culminated in a performative event: the sharing of the bread/sculptures among audience. The sculpture's edibility stimulated the viewers' senses, including their taste and smell, in addition to appreciating its shape and form. By accepting and tasting the offered bread, the audience became part of the performance, and the project established a different bond between the audience and itself. The story develops through the participation of viewers and makes the project inclusive. Although the main story in the project is based in 1980s Turkey and seems to be limiting the context, political figures who influenced politics and people's lives internationally, such as Lenin, Marx and Rosa Luxemburg, allow the audience to explore perspectives that they can relate to. To support the story written in the leaflets, I also exhibited ceramic moulds made of red clay. These pieces were on view on wooden tables specially designed and made for them. During the exhibition, the leaflets were placed next to the bread baked in the form of Karl Marx. The audience was encouraged to take a copy of the leaflet

Tavoitteenani on lähestyä opintojani värittänyttä epävarmuutta avoimesti. Pohjaan ajatteluani mm. kirjailija L.M. Montgomeryn Runotyttö-sarjaan, runoilija Olli-Pekka Tennilän ajatuksiin poetiikasta sekä filosofi Gaston Bachelardin teokseen Tilan poetiikka

Intercultural Performance: Bharatanatyam in the practice of a Western choreographer

    No full text
This thesis examines the practice of a Greek choreographer trained in Bharatanatyam and in western dance techniques such as, ballet, Cunningham, Graham and release, through the lens of intercultural performance making. It touches on the challenges found in a culturally mixed practice and discusses cultural appropriation and persisting Orientalist notions in the discussion of classical Indian dance forms in the West. In the first chapter, I introduce my background in dance and how I have experienced the symbiosis of the eastern and western dance trainings. The chapter is divided chronologically, starting with my years as a student of Bharatanatyam in Greece and continuing with my formal dance training at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London. In the second chapter my latest choreographic work ‘Fera Matter’, is brought as the case example which initiates the conversation. I elaborate on the conception of the piece and the starting points which were drawn by Greek mythology. The making process is also examined in its interculturality and reveals discussions of the working group around cultural appropriation. Additionally, I touch on the overall dramaturgy of the piece, and I focus on the discoveries made through the employment of abhinaya as a choreographic tool. In the third chapter I view more microscopically the topics of intercultural performance making, cultural appropriation and Orientalist notions found in interculturalism, with an emphasis on how they appear in my own work and practice. The direction of my analysis is inspired by anthropologist Pallabi Chakravorty and dance writer Janet O’Shea. The fourth and final chapter consists of a comparative analysis of the praxis of Akram Khan and Shantala Shivalingappa, to highlight existing methods of employing classical Indian dance on western stages and to reveal nuances among different practices. The chapter concludes with a further exploration of the term ‘guru-less’ which appeared during my written exploration

here for a moment - an attempt to knowing the practice by practicing

    No full text
...Knowing the practice by practicing… …(Under)standing performance by performing… …Learning how to facilitate by facilitating… …Learning to play by playing… This document is about an artistic practice I have been developing for the past five years, and more intensively for the past two years, during my studies in the Master’s Programme in Dance Performance at the Theatre Academy, University of the Arts Helsinki. It is an attempt to find words to better define this artistic practice. “here for a moment” both refers to a specific location in space (here) and a specific duration in time (for a moment). This document gives a framework to this practice which has its origins both in improvisation and instant composition. It attempts to capture what my practice is at this moment and where the practice happens. It is about finding the practice by practicing. It is about inviting the practice to a place within me, and let it grow from that place. The first chapter is an opening of the practice. It is an attempt to start writing: writing as practice and writing about the practice. It opens to the practice as I have been experiencing it during Uniarts opening ceremony in September 2022. It opens to the origin of this practice, to the place and to the human environment that allows the practice to grow. The second chapter is about the practice itself, a practice that does not have a name yet but which is finding its own name by being activated with words. This chapter is in dialogue with practices and writings from a choreographer-performer, a dancer-researcher and an associate professor of art History. Through their experience of “practice”, “writing” and “place”, they are opening ways for me to relate with the notions of writing and place when it comes to my own practice. The third chapter is about performance and performing and how my body and mind have found a place to experience them. This chapter is in dialogue with texts and practices from improvisation and instant composition practitioners and a dramaturge. It goes through the understanding I have been building about performance and performing, the combination of score and instant composition within a performance, and the notions of witness and public space when it comes to performance. The fourth chapter is about the practice when I open it to other practitioners. I have been opening this practice every week for one year now. Together with the making of the performance reproduced in various contexts, the open practice has become the second main outcome of my studies at Uniarts Helsinki. In this chapter I attempt to trace the history of the emergence of this open practice, through other practices that has informed it. I describe how facilitating an open practice has allowed a space for me to learn how to facilitate. The fifth chapter is another opening, From now on. It is about pushing towards and from the “now” in order to move forward. It is about acknowledging what happened during my Master studies at Uniarts Helsinki and how I can move on from that place

Monitaiteisen yhteistyön mustat ruusut : Maikki Järnefeltin medioitu ääni

    No full text

Managing the Western musical canon. Approaches to symphony orchestra program planning.

    No full text
This Master’s thesis is examining the repertoire selection of symphony orchestras. It aims to investigate the processes, strategies and decision making of orchestras through how orchestras give understandings and meanings to musical concepts such as the Western musical canon and contemporary music. Through theories of canon and music history, this research analyzes the discourses of knowledge and beliefs orchestra professionals have when planning the concert season. The research data is gathered by interviewing three orchestra managers in Finland and analyzed through discourse analysis, with a social constructionist approach. Through this approach, the meanings and understanding of how managers construct their views towards program planning are reflected to the theories of Western musical canons, and the interviews also touches upon societal topics such as the relationship of the orchestra institution and society. The findings of the research conclude that overall, the repertoire selection is a continuous process of planning and negotiation that comes together piece by piece, and orchestras aim for a predetermined balance of musical periods and styles. Orchestra managers are interested and aware of the recent public discussion regarding a growing demand for diversity, gender balance and equality in repertoires and composer selections, and they pay attention to these issues by addressing them in the repertoires while maintaining balance. However, the analysis suggests that the power of the traditional Western musical canon is strong and rooted in the institutional premises and the educational system of orchestra musicians and conductors, and orchestras are careful and concerned not to disrupt the performers’ or the audiences’ tastes and expectations towards the traditional orchestral repertoires
