Human voice and instrumental voice : an investigation of voicelikeness

    No full text
This artistic research explores the relationships between human and instrumental voice (in the case of string instruments), seen from an embodied and performative point of view. The question originates from my experience of violinist and composer. Voice is a unique mark of human identity: if this is particularly true for vocal timbre, something similar is at play in the ‘instrumental voice’, as a unique expression of personal and musical identity. This research aims to uncover the importance of this vocal and instrumental relationship, acknowledging their common embodied nature and shared origins. As utterances directed at the ‘other’, both human and instrumental voice are deeply relational. From 2016 to 2022, I investigated the question of the voicelikeness between a musician’s voice and their own instrument through five multidisciplinary art projects: in Imaginary Spaces fragments of individual and collective voice inhabited a performative environment shared by musicians and audience; The end of no ending focused on the relationships between two female voices and their mutable surroundings; Between word and life explored the multiple relationships of voice and instrument in an electroacoustic space, de-multiplied by bringing in dance and video; Sounding Bodies gathered human and mechanical bodies to explore an unconventional space, inviting the audience to follow their path; Medusa was a music theatre work putting into perspective the question of voicelikeness by evoking Italian Early Baroque music, visual art, and dance. This artistic research was carried out through an artistic process, with supporting methods such as grounded theory, ethnography, and autoethnography, creating a virtuous cycle between practice and theory, with some interesting and unexpected changes taking place in my artistic journey. The research outcomes consist of a written part combined with a collection of traces, sounds, images, and video examples presented in the Research Catalogue. The theoretical framework for this inquiry includes recent studies in palaeoanthropology, human development, music psychology, and embodiment. Cavarero’s philosophy of voice, Arendt’s philosophy of the ‘in-between’, various philosophies of the ‘other’, as well as other contributions from psychoanalysis are put in mutual dialogue with my artistic practice. Among the research outcomes are the re-evaluation of vocal layers in personal and musical identity, considering music making as a relational practice, and an exploration of the porous boundaries between the roles of composer, performer, and listener. In this perspective, the new terms to ‘in-hear’ and to ‘co-hear’ respectively denote an attention to inner sounds, and towards one another in a community of listeners.fi=ei tietoa saavutettavuudesta|sv=okänd tillgänglighet|en=unknown accessibility

Metamorphoses of living and dying paintings

My Masters degree work [ The structural colour paintings ] were showcased at the Academy of Fine Arts annual degree show: KUVAN KEVÄT ’23. The work consisted of three large-scale paintings. In this written part, I delve into how this body of work came to be, and my fascination with the iridescence produced by a petroleum oil slick upon water. This ethereal colour echos the environmental changes, as well as being entangled in other calamities of our moment in time. I have been searching for a new language of painting that responds to our contemporary experience of a changing environment. I felt frustrated with landscape painting, and how maddeningly out of touch it feels considering our ecological realities. I want my paintings to embrace the real, the now. I am interested in the scientific process, and in using colour as a bioindicator revealing invisible changes. My Master’s studies enabled me to shift towards experimental materiality and a practice that combined chemistry with art. I detail the long nights spent in the laboratory and the challenges of transforming traditional painting mediums into these intensely orgasmic colours. Materiality expresses growth and decay of all matter in nature. It invites us to contemplate our own impermanence. The structural colour paintings alter their appearance depending on their environment. Reacting to light, weather, time, space, gravity, and the reflections and movements of living beings to weave a kaleidoscope of colour and moving shadow forms across the canvas. They shimmer and morph like living entities. I have come to realise the importance of how we interact with these paintings – how the experience confronts the observer with their own presence and involvement in the environment. We see ourselves in these living and dying paintings. In this metamorphosis, we may come to grips with our own transience

Musical Vocabularies : creating a framework for meaningful intercultural musical dialogue

    No full text
In this arts-based research I draw on the approaches of autoethnography and artistic research to uncover findings emerging from my artistic and pedagogical navigation through traditional and contemporary folk and global musics. I explore the processes of my own interpretations and understandings of music-making in intercultural contexts through composing, co-creating, and interacting with musicians from different musical and cultural backgrounds. The title of musical vocabularies refers to the process of gathering and understanding musical aesthetics from diverse and unfamiliar musics as a non-native, and how to integrate and transmit these elements artistically and ethically in my performing and teaching practices. Through exploring musical dialogues and collaborations in this research, I discover different ways of music-making and music-thinking, which involve a variety of pedagogical methods and perspectives. In the first sections of this work, I discuss my positionality by briefly unfolding my artistic and educational background, as well as unpack the core methods applied in this arts-based research. On the basis of three selected artistic case studies, I explore new and unfamiliar musical cultures together with their related pedagogical approaches and thinking. I unfold the working methods used and discuss the compositional processes, which involve co-creating and interacting in an intercultural environment, resulting in three main artistic outcomes, including a duo with a musician from the Faroe Islands, collaborations with musicians in Hungary, and an intercultural trio formed for my master’s concert. Through these case studies, I explore the artistic possibilities of intercultural music-making and how hands-on experience can be translated to teaching practice, suggesting a framework for meaningful intercultural musical dialogue. Key findings include that intercultural musical dialogues require multiple ways of music-thinking and pedagogical approaches. Furthermore, immersion into different cultural contexts, including day to day experiences of the culture and hands on collaboration with musicians from inside each culture are essential elements. Finally, I reflect on possible future directions for intercultural musical dialogue and discuss its complexities and current issues

    No full text

: laadullinen tutkimus tunneilmaisun opettamisesta pop/jazz-laulun ammattiopinnoissa

    No full text
Tässä tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan, mitä kolme ammattiopiskelijoita opettavaa pop/jazz-laulupedagogia kertovat tunneilmaisun opetuksestaan. Tarkoituksena oli selvittää, opettavatko he kertomansa mukaan ammattiopiskelijoilleen tunneilmaisua, ja jos opettavat, millaisia keinoja he kertovat käyttäneensä tunneilmaisun opetuksessa. Tutkimuksen teoreettinen viitekehys koostuu ilmaisun, tunneilmaisun ja tulkinnan määrittelystä sekä muutaman rytmimusiikin ammattioppilaitoksen opetussuunnitelmista. Peilaan tunnetyötä myös näyttelijäntyön näkökulmasta. Tutkimus on laadullinen tapaustutkimus. Tulososan loppuun on koottu yhteenvetona haastateltavilta opettajilta esiin tulleita keinoja tunneilmaisun opetukseen

Sävelten tyttäret : Säveltävät naiset Suomessa 1800-luvulta 1900-luvulle

    No full text
- Ester Melande

    Orkesteriohjelmisto Pietarin konservatorion kapellimestarikoulutuksessa 1979–2019

    No full text

    Memory Field

    No full text
This written component of the MA thesis addresses self-censorship that derives collective trauma that has been silenced. It enters through the memory of the 6 October Massacre at Thammasart University in 1976. Referring to Thongchai Winichakul, a historian and researcher who was also a victim of the traumatic incident, and who coined the term 'unforgetting'. He highlighted that memories of political atrocities can lead to a memory impasse in society. It examines the condition of unforgetting within the symptom of silencing that has persisted among the Thai people for generations. The thesis also explores self-censorship during the artistic process and how collaborative and participatory methods help to overcome this issue in making of the artistic work, the memory field performance. Additionally, I have also incorporated the concept of memory field by anthropologist Daniel T. Linger to help me examine the interweaving of my personal and social memories within the framework of this thesis together with the notions of recollecting and recalling that resonate with my artistic approach. A close examination of and inspiration from Doris Salcedo's work "Noviembre 6 y 7" (2002) in dialogue with Mieke Bal's analysis in the book, Of what one cannot speak: Doris Salcedo's Political Art, has shaped my thinking and artistic approach. In the section on collective action, I discuss how to engage participants using memories and reflect on the tools and approaches I have developed throughout my research. Ultimately, I explore and explain how I design collaborative processes to address and overcome the issue of self-censorship that I have encountered
