Ostaritutkimuksia = Shopping mall investigations
Ostaritutkimuksia-hanke tarkastelee yhteiskunnallistaloudellisen murroksen heijastumista kaupunkikuvaan vanhojen helsinkiläisten ostoskeskusten kautta. In the Finnish urban planning of the 1950s-70s, the shopping centre was established as the focal point of new suburban areas in the spirit of modernism. Later, these buildings have fallen into disrepair, and now many of them are being demolished to make room for new construction. The Shopping Mall Investigations project examines the impact of socio-economic change in the cityscape through old shopping centres in Helsinki. In this book, invited researchers and artists explore the history, present, and future of the shopping centre phenomenon. The book also serves as documentation of the art and research programme organized at the Konalanvuori shopping centre in summer 2022.Johdanto / Miina Pohjolainen & Salla Valle --

Rusetti/Choker
Opinnäytetyöni taiteellinen osa on videoteos Choker. Teos oli esillä Kuvan Kevät 2021-näyttelyssä Exhibition Laboratory-galleriassa. Video on yksikanavainen, 11 minuuttia pitkä.
Score-Tool : target audibility testing in orchestration
This is an applied artistic doctoral project, which is divided into three parts: an orchestral composition, a computer application and its source code, and a written report. In this project, I present an orchestration issue that I have encountered in rehearsals of my compositions. The issue is the inaudibility of an instrument or an instrumental group that I thought to be audible when I was writing the score. This inaudibility can occur even though the orchestration follows the best practices recommended in academic handbooks. The artistic part of the project is an opera All the Truths We Cannot See, which I composed while acquiring new knowledge about orchestration as described in this report.
The developmental part of the project is the Score-Tool computer application, Score-Tool App, which I designed and coded myself. The application is intended for composers to enable them to analyze a score during the composing stage in terms of the audibility of a desired instrumental sound. The audibility is calculated based on real instrument audio analysis and measurements of sound intensity levels in a performance situation. In addition to my own research, the App utilizes various psychoacoustic algorithms, borrowed from lossy audio coding- and speech recognition applications and virtual fundamental research to determine the masking threshold of the orchestration. I have also adjusted the existing algorithms for this project’s purposes. Any sound that has spectral peaks above the masking threshold within at least one critical band should thus be at least partly audible. The inaudibility of a sound can also be caused by its auditory blending into the orchestration. The blending of a sound can happen, for example, when its timbre matches the orchestration or when the spectral centroid of the sound is low in frequency space. The application estimates the blending of the sound by calculating its spectral centroid and by comparing the timbre similarity with orchestration by utilizing the MFCC algorithm, which is borrowed from speech recognition applications. As a result, the App calculates the audibility prediction in percentage values. The audibility prediction is my own term, calculated with the algorithm I developed. This value comes from a combination of masking and blending algorithms whose importance is weighted based on my experiences and my own measurements in orchestral rehearsals. The usability of the Score-Tool App has been tested by me and by other composers by analyzing both existing and in-progress compositions using the App.
The report is divided into three parts. In Part I discuss aspects affecting the sound audibility in orchestration, what is taught about the subject in music universities, my personal experience in this area, the effect of the hall and the performer’s position on stage, and how the issue is addressed in music psychology research.
In Part II I describe the development of the Score-Tool App, how the algorithms work “under the hood,” and the features I implemented in the program. Part II also includes my own research in visualizing orchestration masking and timbre data as well as a tutorial for the App. The App manual can be found in the tool itself. The Score-Tool App is also addressed at the end of the report, where I discuss the possibilities for future research in this field using the Score-Tool App and other orchestration features that could be implemented into it.
In Part III of this report, I describe the testing phase and how using this App has changed the way I write for the orchestra while composing the opera All the Truths We Cannot See. In addition, I present cases where this App has helped my colleagues in their orchestrations. I also discuss how the analysis results of the Score-Tool App correlate with live performance and how the audibility prediction algorithm of the Score-Tool App has been adjusted based on my experience and measurements I made in this testing phase. In other words, I test the validity of the results that the Score-Tool App currently gives a composer.
The conclusion is that the Score-Tool App provides relevant information about possible audibility issues in a composition. Using the App does not solve the issues immediately, but it does give reliable specifics about which instruments are causing the issues. This information helps composers during the artistic process to pre-evaluate the functionality of their orchestration. The App guides the composer in a field that, owing to its complexity, has very few definite answers.fi=ei tietoa saavutettavuudesta|sv=okänd tillgänglighet|en=unknown accessibility
Correlating Symbolisms of Womanhood and Marriage in the Libretti of Schoenberg's Von heute auf morgen and Berg's Lulu
Von heute auf morgen and Lulu, the twelve-tone operas of Arnold Schoenberg and Alban Berg, respectively, can be interpreted as works that sought to uphold a traditional formalism of Germanic opera construction amidst the post-Expressionistic aesthetics that the newer Zeitoper style strove to abolish. This new style aimed to popularize opera by embracing a new simplicity of contemporary values that discouraged the perpetuation of prior operatic dispositions. This dichotomy of old vs. new is presented in an analysis of the Von heute and Lulu libretti that traces their symbolic representation of womanhood and marriage from the male gaze, whereby an overlapping depiction emerges in both operas in their similar but varying treatment of these themes as parodies of their composers' time and the ongoing cultural conflict between moralities rooted in the past and non-conforming values that embrace modernized change
The Bartleby Machine : exploring creative disobedience in computers
The idea of disobedient machines is developed from the perspective of the historical and current developments in artificial intelligence (AI). Disobedience is often used in arts and technology as both a theme and a tool. Beyond that, misbehaviour is presented as one of the skills that is indispensable for natural intelligence. The article doesn’t delve into the use of AIs as an assistive tool for creation. Instead, it speculates if AIs will afford the emergence of an independent, autonomous artificial creator. Different approaches to AIs are presented, from symbolism to emergism. The affordances of machine learning models are described, as well as their limitations like the incapacity to generate breakthroughs outside of their training data, their determinism, and the inability to use analogies to solve unseen problems. Other missing human (or biological) skills present in art are emotion, goal-less production, and agency, which is a problem even when human volition is studied. The limits of computational formalism are like the limits in mathematical reasoning – it always requires some external rules, or axioms demonstrated, like Gödel’s proof. Hofsdtader’s theory of consciousness proposes a way to conciliate the fact that human creativity is also based on closed, fixed biological rules. Finally, it is argued that a machine cannot be creative unless it is also able to misbehave. However, computers must follow a set of instructions or they stop functioning – that is the definition of a Turing machine. Hence, we must face the paradox of wanting well-behaved systems, with the limitations of symbolic machines, while at the same time demanding more autonomous, creative outputs. It is paramount to explore algorithmic misbehaviours that could circumvent this paradox for further development of AIs for the arts and society in general
Nomadic scenography and fictional space-body
The chapter examines a one-person Nomadic Scenography (2020) research project that focused on the phenomenon of distance as a starting point for scenographic expression and on wandering as a place for making a scenography. It explored the space between the present and the absent as a peripheral intermediate space, but also as a porous boundary that attracted artistic expression to various border crossings and interactions. The project included a series of scenographical hikes in Finland, in Päijät-Häme, around the Päijänne National Park, in an archipelago surrounded by a wide body of water, where the borders formed by nature caused resistance and friction to movement and thinking. The project experimented in practice with how scenographic work can take place while wandering and not committing to one place, and what the constant change in space-time relationship brings to scenography and its methods. Nomadic scenography engages in a dialogue with philosophies of being and theories of vibrant matter and trans-corporeality. The research highlights how scenography changed by the wandering is not a material object in one location, but a network of relationships liberated by porous boundaries
”Hyvin toteutettu musiikki on aina hyvin toteutettua musiikkia” : viisi näkökulmaa metallimusiikin käyttämiseen seurakunnan musiikkityössä
Re-thinking fundraising of dance companies in Finnish cultural political environment
Finnish cultural policies have ideologically justified public support for arts, but recent argumentations have stressed the need for funding from private sources. This study examines how Finnish contemporary dance companies react to the demand to increase fundraising from private sources. It explores how the concept of fundraising is understood, and what kind of forms of fundraising the dance companies practise outside of public funding. It also asks how Finnish cultural policy, the reform of state subsidy system for performing arts and the criterions of public funding are perceived by the dance companies.
The research is a qualitative theme study conducted with semi-structured thematic interviews. The primary data is gathered by interviewing representatives of four state subsidised Finnish contemporary dance companies, so-called VOS dance theatres, and of three independent dance companies receiving operational subsidies from Arts Promotion Centre Finland (Taike). The thematic framework and analysis operate in the fields of Finnish cultural policy, contemporary dance, and fundraising in relation to arts management.
The findings indicate following:
1) There are varying interpretations of the term fundraising, and clarifying the dance company’s mission, vision and value statements, as well as the contents and processes of fundraising, would help the dance companies to compose their funding from multiple sources.
2) Public support is essential for all the Finnish dance companies, yet the necessity to increase private fundraising is recognised to widen the audience structure and financial base of the dance company. The state subsidies for performing arts form a stable foundation for the budgets of the VOS dance companies, and enable to release more efforts (funds, time, personnel) for fundraising from other sources.
3) The natural links between the dance companies, other arts organisations, independent collectives, and arts professionals construct a collaborative horizontal network for fundsaving by sharing existing resources, and for fundraising for co-operative activities and co-productions. The practised forms of private fundraising consist of e.g., project grants from private foundations, innovative collaborations or small-scale sponsoring with business sector, sales of tickets, venues, expertise and performance packages, and emerging potentials for membership schemes and donations. However, more pilot projects are needed to develop partnerships with and ways to approach business sector.
4) Finnish system of public funding for arts is valued as relatively equal, transparent, and liable – although some development ideas appeared in the study. The reformed state subsidy system for performing arts is regarded as an improvement to ease long-term planning and ways for newcomers to join the system. Yet, suitable criterions for obtaining public subsidies and views to the impacts of wider tax deductions for donating to arts divide opinions
The potential of multiprofessional collaboration in integrating dance in early additional language education in primary school
This article explores how a multiprofessional team collaborates in integrating dance in early language education. It is based on the team members’ experiences and reflections as they combined dance with the teaching of Swedish as an additional language in grade 1 in a Finnish primary school. The project was framed by the notion of embodied learning understood as the holistic engagement of learners within their socio-material surroundings. Following socio-material approaches to education, the study examines the team of a dance teacher, a researcher, and the school’s class teachers as an assemblage and multiprofessional collaboration as events that cross subject boundaries. The data assemblage encompasses audio-recorded, embodied, and material documentation of weekly meetings, in which the team co-designed the activities. The analysis maps the collaborative process of integrating language and dance through the post-qualitative approach of embodied writing. It highlights the designed practices, the challenges and the possibilities of the collaboration, and the conditions for successful collaboration. Co-designing dance and language integrated pedagogy occurred in events of disciplinary crossings and in entanglement with the process of becoming an assembled team. These insights illuminate multiprofessional collaboration as an entry point to embodied and cross-disciplinary pedagogies in early language education in primary school
Mietin, mitä vaarantunne on merkinnyt minulle työskennellessäni osana työryhmä
