Memorizing lyrics and performing from memory : a study of professional singers’ approaches to foreign language repertoire
The overarching aim of my research is to investigate the approaches professional singers use to memorize lyrics and remember the lyrics during a performance. I focus especially on the challenge of singing and performing in a language other than one’s mother tongue since it is quite common among singers.
The research questions that will address this overarching aim are:
• What different strategies do singers use to memorize lyrics?
• What kind of strategies do singers use to remember song lyrics while
performing on stage and what coping mechanisms do they use if they forget the
lyrics?
• How does the language of the song influence the memorization of lyrics and
remembering them during performance?
Based on my research results, using various strategies based on different memory systems is the most effective way to memorize lyrics. It is recommended to memorize the song by deliberate memorization training instead of relying only on motor memory. By memorizing lyrics in deliberate ways, for example by using structural memory or emotional memory, when performing, a singer can rely on different memory systems and be able to cope in a situation where the motor and auditory based association chains fail.
Strategies to memorize the lyrics include for example studying the meaning of the text, translating it into one’s mother tongue if necessary, memorizing the lyrics phonetically, writing the lyrics on paper by hand, listening to a recording of the song and singing along with the recording, as well as attaching emotions and an interpretation to the lyrics, and making a storyline to structure the song. When forgetting the lyrics on stage common coping mechanisms include singing the lyrics of the previous verse or singing the same lyrics twice, singing without words for example scatting, humming, or singing with relevant syllables as well as taking a break and indicating to the band to play a solo or to continue longer in the part they are already playing
What a Feeling! Strategic Roadmap for a Meaningful Cultural Experience
This qualitative study explores how to use experience design to create a meaningful cultural experience. I have used multiple methods of data collection. Literature review is concentrated in experience design and event design. I deepened the knowledge with case studies and collected data over several years. After the analysis I have created a draft of an inspirational strategic roadmap that includes values and ideas. The road map was evaluated by experts in the field during semi-structured interviews.
The main focus of the study is the inspirational strategic roadmap for a meaningful cultural experience. The values are in the core and the organization can search for a pathway to execute the values through ideas in the road map. Other findings were connected to the event design. Cognitive engagement actions create more meaningful event experiences. Credibility and authenticity develop respect which can build trust both ways. Community and other stakeholders should understand and live the same values as the organizer, and also the content of the event should be aligned with the values. For marginalized groups the meaningful events can be transformative, but also a safe haven. The roadmap can be used by the event organizers and organizations to explore and build their strategy and vision towards more meaningful events, and to implement their values
Keskustelen tekstin lävitse taiteellisella opinnäytetyölläni Löydettyjä, Unohdettuja Rakastettuja – Ones Loved and Lost, now just white (2023) ja peilaan pohdintojani käytännön toteutukseen.
Haluan antaa tilaa yksityiskohtaiselle esiintyjäntyölliselle havainnoinnille, jota olen harjoittanut.
Cultural intelligence in intercultural collaborative music-making: Self-reflecting on interpersonal abilities as a mediator for creative collaborations in Colombia
In this artistic research, I investigate the personal and interpersonal abilities of a musician in intercultural musical collaborations. The body of this research is my field trip to Colombia and two different artistic collaboration projects that I carried out during this trip. I apply the theoretical concept of cultural intelligence to observe and understand my personal experience in engaging in intercultural collaborative music-making. As an artist-researcher, I look into the distinctive characteristics of interpersonal interaction with culturally different others and I answer the following research questions:
1. How does cultural intelligence emerge in intercultural creative collaboration?
2. How can cultural intelligence and intercultural communicative competence impact the creative outcome in intercultural and transcultural collaborations?
As the research method, I use artistic autoethnography. I focus on self-reflecting on my personal experience in Colombia and describe insights relating to the key concepts which are cultural intelligence, intercultural communicative competence, and intercultural collaboration. Through the observations, I aim to contribute new knowledge on these key concepts as applied in artistic research and creative artistic practices. As emerging in the findings, cultural intelligence and developing personal abilities in intercultural understanding and adaptation form a foundation for successful interpersonal encounters and collaborations in culturally diverse environments. Simultaneously, creative artistic collaborations can help in absorbing cultural understanding and succeeding in intercultural communication. Along with a thesis, this artistic research includes two artistic components: a music video as an outcome of a song-writing collaboration and an extended play release (EP) of three improvised musical pieces
Softer and wilder? Ways of Engaging with Dance Performance Practices, Collective Work and Production Economy
The written component examines, how the ways of engaging with dance performance practices, collective work and production economy are conditioned? And through which kind of practitioner’s tools and strategies it is possible to practice softer and wilder ways of engaging with artistic work? The research questions are specifically observed in relation to the fields of dance, performance and choreography. The aim of the written component is to contribute to sustainable and reaffirmative ways of engaging with artistic work through feminist working strategies. Hereby, I articulate tools and strategies for softer and wilder ways of engaging, which are entangled with concreteness. I recognize the tools and strategies as practices of response-ability, active consciousness, curiosity, trust, enjoyment, emergence, letting go and dialoguing. All my ponderings are deeply carved by the questions of – How art? And, how artistic work and creation can exist softer and wilder, in the times of multiple crises in 2023?
In the introduction, I present my urgency to rethink and observe the ways of engaging with dance performance practices, collective work and production economy. The introduction presents the structure of the written component, claims for the importance of crediting and introduces my working with watery writing. In addition, the introduction opens up the use of footnotes in the writing. When continuing onto the first chapter, I open up the research questions of the written component. I continue to encounter my understanding of feminist working strategies, through which I approach the notion of engagement in artistic work. Next to engagement, I introduce the notions of response-ability and dynamic space. I then introduce the concepts of performativity and performative, which I also consider having an effect on the ways of engaging. Last, I deepen into the grounding question of – How art?
In the second chapter, I observe the softer and wilder ways of engaging through concreteness and felt-sensed experiences. I open up experiences in the dancer’s practice through my path with dance practitioners. Here, I introduce the ways of engaging as something that stays in motion. I approach staying in motion through my understanding of movement within movement as a practice of active consciousness. Further on, I introduce the notion of machinery body, which I observe in relation to consciousness and movement in the dancer’s practice. I bring in the concept of situated knower as conditioned and entangled with the ways of engaging. Later, I reflect on the artistic component of the master's thesis with TADaCollective. Here, I look at how the articulated tools and strategies of the second chapter were integrated in the collective working. In the end, I dive into the collective working process of ...like crazy as the artistic creation of the master’s thesis’ artistic component.
In the third chapter, I reflect on Bojana Kunst’s work Artist at Work, Proximity of Art and Capitalism. I come back to the question of ‘how art’ and continue on to articulate the intertwined relation of art and politics. Then, I introduce the concepts of the subject and the production of subjectivity. By following Kunst, I recognize the production of subjectivity being affected by contemporary capitalism. Throughout the chapter, I draw connections between the machinery body, subject and contemporary capitalism. In addition, I delve into the notions of self-governance, post-political and branding. Through these observations, I discuss the effects of contemporary capitalism and its temporality in regard to artistic work and production economy.
In the conclusion, I bring together the observations of the written component and elaborate on the needs of future artistic work. I develop my understanding of the ways of engaging with artistic work. Here, I come to the conclusion that the tools and strategies towards softer and wilder ways of engaging need to be rooted in response-ability, the activity of staying in motion and softer structures, which take into consideration emotional corporeal bodies. Moreover, I reflect on the process of writing and open the learning outcomes of the written component. In the end, I conclude with a futuristic take on my desires towards my artistic work.
Toisessa kappaleessa lähestyn vuorovaikutuksellisesta konkretiaa tanssijan praktiikkaan punoutuen oman kokemuksellisen polkuni kautta. Lisäksi syvennyn taiteellisen opinnäytetyöni kokemuksiin ...like crazy -teoksen parissa.
Kolmannessa kappaleessa keskustelen taiteellisen työskentelyn vaikuttuneisuudesta Bojana Kunst:n Artist at Work, Proximity of Art and Capitalism kanssa.
Päästäkseni lähemmäksi henkilöhahmoani minun on luotava kirjoittamiseni sisälle tila, jossa kohtaan eettisesti toisen.
Musicological and Ethnomusicological Perspectives
Popular music and religion are in a doubly challenged position as an amalgamated subject area of academic enquiry. On the one hand, the reactionary conventions of music education prevail, whereby music tends to be conceived as High Art and thus dominated by the classical canon, in both practical tuition and scholarly analysis. Consequently, the more music is associated with so-called ‘extramusical’ or ‘functional’ dimensions – such as entertainment or religion – the fewer resources are devoted to it in higher education. On the other hand, there is an exclusionary tension between the popular and the religious, or between entertainment and religion, on the basis of different philosophies and conceptions of the world especially, regardless of the vast quantities of religious devotees. Thus, until the twenty-first century it was equally rare to encounter discussion about religiosity in popular music studies as it was to run into deliberation about music in the study of religions
Saisinko tanssia sinulle lahjaksi pienen tanssin?
My artistic thesis work was called Aulatapahtuma (Lobby Event). It was a choreographic concept created for three different types of library spaces. The choreographic movement (and stillness) generated sensory information in the library spaces. The non-linear details and the change created in the space were only actualized in the consciousness of the library visitor only if or when they began to follow the choreographic event more consciously or ended up in direct interaction with the performer. In this way, the library visitor could also receive a gift in the form of a small dance performance made especially for him or her. The event itself had no actual audience, although some library visitors who were interested in the event might have stayed to watch it. There was no intention to publicize the event in advance. In this respect, too, the event's aim - to be surprising - was also to be invisible. Low threshold accessibility, sustainability, and social inclusion were the key value-based objectives of the Lobby Event.
In the written part of my thesis, I try to note down various observations related to the choreographic process of the Lobby Event to the objectives I set for it. As a background to my observations, it is worth noting that in my long previous career as a choreographer, I have worked almost exclusively in theatre and stage contexts. In working on the Lobby Event, I was therefore also working in a new way. In the written part, I try to locate the Lobby Event in reference points of various choreographic continuities and traditions linked to the work, as well as in some of the points of interest relevant to my own earlier career with the Lobby Event, such as my working history with choreographer Deborah Hay.
Within the work, I understood that within each space itself, there was already a choreography and movement that my role in the event was to highlight, emphasize, obscure, enhance, protect, support, follow, or translate into movement. This choreographic process is in turn returned through action and dance as an effect and change in the space and as a perception of the space and situation by the recipients. This line of thinking also became the premise of the spatiality of my choreographic work. In addition, the choreography was also influenced by how I and the public library spaces, and the people who manage them, encountered, negotiated, articulated, and explained their actions, desires, and possibilities concerning my work.
Based on my perception and my experiences in this process, the choreographic score served as a menu of functional options that I could use during the event. It would not make sense for an artist working in a public space to execute a choreography that was too much decided in advance. For I understood that a key part of the nature of shared space includes the obligation to let others use the space as they wish to be there. In making the Lobby Event, I also sought to learn to see the choreographer's work not as a kind of aesthetic excellence but as a specialized expertise in embodiment that could be used, for example, in the development of such socially empowering performance practices
“Surrendering to the Musical Work” : Exploring Meanings of Performing Western Classical Music Ascribed by Three Violin Students in Higher Music Education
In this master’s thesis I examine the meanings violin students in higher music education ascribe to per-forming Western classical music. I also address how instrumental studies influence those meanings, and how students come to understand the artistic practice as a part of their personal and professional development.
The study was guided by the following research question:
What meanings do violin students in higher music education ascribe to performing Western classical music?
In the conceptual framework, I suggest a working definition of meaning through the lenses of psychology, sociology, and philosophy. I examine the notion in the specific context of Western classical music, where music is construed as works, containing inner meanings. I explore the tensions between the authority of musical works and the artistic agency of a performer. Finally, I discuss how performance is studied in higher instrumental music education. The study is a qualitative case study. I gathered the data through theme-centered interviews with three violin students in the Sibelius Academy, University of Arts Helsinki. I conducted a systematic content analysis on the transcripts of the interviews.
The meanings ascribed by violin students in higher music education convey their negotiations between self-expression and interpreting the meanings embedded in compositions, reflecting the composer’s intentions. Violin students entwine themselves with the artistic tradition of Western classical music, where performance is employed to preserve historical musical works. In higher music education, performance is a means to stretch instrumental skills beyond the immediate and thus enhance professional development. Professional violinists take on various roles, such as orchestra musicians, teachers, historians, and soloists. Different meanings are ascribed to performance depending on the role of the violinist. To conclude, the results indicate that in performing Western classical music, violin students find and create artistic, professional, communal, historical, practical, and spiritual meanings
