No full textThis publication integrates empirical research, theoretical and fictional texts, art objects and artistic research to a nuanced and diverse understanding of the gift. We have brought together academic scholars and artist-researchers to interrogate existing and projected knowledges about the gift-concept.
The Presence of Exchange delves into how artist-researchers conceptualise, materialise, and articulate the idea of gift - its role in society and in our lives. Eleven authors and author groups compile thoughts and ideas expressed in and through artistic practices. No full textMaisterintutkielmani käsittelee ryhmän rakentumista ja siihen vaikuttaneita tekijöitä lukion musikaalipro-duktion kontekstissa. Tutkin, millaisia kokemuksia opiskelijoilla oli musikaaliproduktion ryhmäytymis-prosessista ja sitä, millaiset tekijät vaikuttivat ryhmän kehitykseen. Tutkimuskysymykseni ovat:
1. Miten ryhmä rakentuu lukion musikaaliproduktion aikana?
2. Mitkä tekijät ovat yhteydessä ryhmäytymiseen lukion musikaaliproduktion aikana haastateltavien nuorten mukaan?
Avaan johdannossa omia kokemuksiani musikaaliproduktioista lukiossa sekä tutkimukseni antia musiikkikasvatuksen alalla. Teoreettisessa viitekehyksessä määritän tutkimukselleni olennaisia käsitteitä, joita ovat ryhmä, ryhmädynamiikka, vuorovaikutus, turvallisempi tila, kaveri- ja ystävyyssuhteet sekä musikaaliproduktio lukiossa, sekä esittelen Bruce Tuckmanin ryhmän kehitysvaiheet.
Tutkimukseni on laadullinen, ja aineisto on tuotettu ryhmähaastattelun avulla. Haastattelin tutkimukseeni seitsemää musikaaliproduktioon osallistunutta opiskelijaa. Analysoin aineiston laadullisena sisällönanalyysinä.
Tutkimukseni osoittaa, että ryhmä rakentui lukion musikaaliproduktiossa vaiheittain Bruce Tuckmanin ryhmäteorian mukaisesti. Ryhmäytymiseen vaikuttivat sekä rakenteelliset että sosiaaliset tekijät, kuten harjoitusprosessi, roolitus, turvallinen ilmapiiri ja yhteinen tavoite. Tutkimukseni perustelee taiteellisten lukioproduktioiden merkitystä uusien ihmissuhteiden syntymisessä, ryhmään kuulumisen ja hyväksytyksi tulemisen kokemuksissa sekä itsensä ylittämisessä

Kuvataiteen tohtorin opinnäytteessäni Kävellen kuvailtu, kävellen koettu tarkastelen kävelyn tuottamaa visuaalista kerrontaa ja sen rakentumista. Kyseessä on liikkeen avulla aikaansaatu havainto, jonka avulla rakennan vuorovaikutusta ympäristöön.
Kiinnostukseni työskentelyprosessiin on johtanut tutkimaan asioiden kehkeytymistä. Tästä nousseet havainnot ovat puolestaan merkinneet kävelymenetelmän muotoutumista. Keskeinen asenne taiteellisessa työskentelyssä erilaisissa ympäristöissä on huomioiva suhtautuminen. Tämä on puolestaan vaikuttanut kävelymenetelmän rajoitteiden hahmottamiseen.
Taiteellinen tutkimukseni keskittyy kolmeen teoskokonaisuuteen, joissa olen käyttänyt kävelymenetelmää. Kehittämässäni kävelymenetelmässä on viitteitä kokeellisen kirjallisuuden työpajan Oulipon kokeellisiin menetelmiin ja oulipolaisten tapaan tuottaa tekstiä käyttämällä itsekeksittyjä rajoitteita. Kävelymenetelmän käsikirjoitus on kulkuväline, jolla on oma reitityksensä ja kiintopisteensä.
Teosten reflektointi kirjallisessa osiossa on synnyttänyt pohdintoja kirjallisen esityksen luonteesta. Päädyin yritykseen kokeilla teoksen rakennetta edes jossakin määrin myös tekstiin. Olen ajatellut teoksen sanalliseen muotoon siirtämisen rinnakkaisena prosessina ja saman suuntaisena kuin taiteellinen työskentely. Tällä tavoin analoginen prosessi on merkinnyt myös kielen tarkastelua niin, että kieli itsessään toisi esiin materiaalisuuttaan paikoitellen vahvemmin.
Kokeilen lyhyitä, erillisiä tekstisaarekkeita häiritäkseni lineaarista lukutapaa. Samalla saan tuoduksi tekstiin harhailun ja kuvittelun tasoja. Tekstisaarekkeet ovat eräänlaisia muistikerrostumisia. Näin ne ovat kuin jälkiä tai jäänteitä harhapoluista, mahdollisista kulkureiteistä. Samalla ne puolustavat olemassaolollaan sellaista tekstin paikkaa, jonka ei tarvitse olla selittävää tai määrittävää.Abstract
In my doctoral thesis in fine arts, Kävellen kuvailtu, kävellen koettu (Depicted by walking, experienced through walking), I deal with the visual narrative produced by walking and its formation. What is at stake is an observation made through movement that I use for establishing interaction with the environment.
My interest in the working process has led me to examine how things come into being. Meanwhile, the resulting observations have marked the formation of the walking method. An attentive perception is a key attitude in artistic work carried out in different environments. This, in turn, has contributed to perceiving the limitations within the walking method.
My artistic research is focused on three works in which I have applied the walking method. The walking method that I have developed alludes to the experimental methods of Oulipo, an experimental literature workshop, and the techniques used by Oulipo members to produce text using self-imposed constraints. The manuscript of the walking method is a vehicle with its speci1ic routes and focal points.
Reflection on the works in the written section has resulted with further considerations of the nature of written presentation. I ended up attempting to apply the structure of the artwork to the text, at least to some extent. I have approached the process of putting the artwork into words as a parallel process analogous to the artistic working process. In this way, the analogous process has also involved the examination of language in a way that allows the language itself to more strongly reveal its materiality.
I experiment with short, disjointed islets of text to interfere with linear reading. This allows me to introduce elements of wandering and imagining into the text. The text islets serve as kinds of memory deposits. They resemble traces or remnants of sidetracks, potential walking routes. At the same time, through their existence, they defend a place for a text that does not need to be explanatory or decisive.Abstrakt
I mitt lärdomsprov för doktorsexamen i bildkonst Kävellen kuvailtu, kävellen koettu (beskrivet gående, upplevt gående) granskar jag det visuella berättandet som en promenad ger upphov till och dess uppbyggnad. Det är fråga om observation genom rörelse där jag bygger upp växelverkan med omgivningen.
Mitt intresse för arbetsprocessen har lett mig att undersöka hur saker och ting utvecklas. Observationerna från detta har i sin tur inneburit formandet av promenadmetoden. En central attityd i det konstnärliga arbetet i olika miljöer är en uppmärksam inställning. Detta har i sin tur påverkat min uppfattning om begränsningarna med promenadmetoden.
Min konstnärliga forskning fokuserar på tre verkhelheter där jag har använt promenadmetoden. I den promenadmetod jag utvecklat finns hänvisningar till Oulipos workshop för experimentella metoder för experimentell litteratur och till Oulipo-medlemmarnas sätt att producera text genom att använda själv uppfunna restriktioner. Promenadmetodens manuskript är ett färdmedel med sin egen rutt och egna fasta punkter.
Reflektionen kring verken i den skriftliga delen har gett upphov till funderingar kring den skriftliga framställningens karaktär. Jag bestämde mig för att försöka ha med verkets struktur åtminstone delvis även i texten. Min tanke är att överföringen av verket i verbal form är en parallell process i samma riktning som det konstnä rliga arbetet. På så sätt har den analoga processen också inneburit att jag låter språket självt ställvis starkare lyfta fram sin materialitet.
Jag experimenterar med korta, separata öar av text för att distrahera den linjära läsningen. Samtidigt kan jag ta med nivåer av irrfärder och fantasi. Öarna av text är ett slags minneslager. På så sätt är de som spår eller rester av villovägar, möjliga färdvägar. Samtidigt försvarar de genom sin existens en plats för en text som inte behöver vara förklarande eller definierande.Alkusanat

No full textTutkielmassa selvitän laadullisen diskurssintutkimuksen keinoin, miten yhteiskunnallinen vihapuhe ilmenee musiikin kentällä. Tapausesimerkkinä hyödynnän Julma Henrin ja Steen1:n kappaletta ”Maanpetturi” (2024). Sivuan tutkielmassa kritiikin ja vihapuheen häilyviä rajoja, rap-musiikin kulttuuriperintöä, musiikin vaikutusvaltaa sekä kappaleen diskursiivisia vaikutussuhteita liittyen laajempaan vihakulttuuri-ilmiöön. Tutkimuskysymykseni on, miten ”Maanpetturi”-kappale ja sen affektit nettikommenteissa ilmentävät yhteiskunnallista vihapuhetta?
Tutkielma lisää ja syventää ymmärrystä yhteiskunnallisen vihapuheen monimuotoisuudesta sekä arkipäiväisestä ilmentymisestä. Decision-making in film production : Applying paradox theory and cognitive science to Finnish film production
No full textThe success of a film depends on producers and creative teams making correct decisions during the production process. Decisions in film production create tension that arises from the internal organization of the companies, the nature of the film product and the type of decision-making processes before and during filming. Our aim is to focus on decision-making as a critical issue for production research. Furthermore, we highlight the distinctive features of the Finnish film context that may influence the way decisions are made. To this end, we combine our theoretical review with comments and reflections from an in-depth interview with the Finnish producer Jussi Rauntamäki about his multiple works. Our conceptual framework combines paradox theory with insights from film studies and cognitive science that can be used in studies aimed at unravelling paradoxes in the context of Finnish film production that are brought to light in the interview
The Sound of Deindustrialization
No full textThis chapter explores how music serves as a mediator for societal transitions, highlighting its role in expressing the emotional impact of economic change. Through qualitative analysis of musical production in European industrial cities during the late 1970s and early 1980s, it reveals music’s ability to foster resilience and community amid industrial decline. Music doesn’t play the function of memorializing individual stories or narrating cities shrinking, factories closing and communities imploding like, for instance, cinema and photography have done. Music can partially transcend the visual dimension and its tropes in representing a particular socioeconomic change. Therefore, its role in deindustrialization becomes at the same time more elusive but also more important. ‘Deindustrialization music,’ such as punk and post-punk, represents in truth a mediator of a temporary condition and indicated a ‘way out’ able to depart from the industrial city and its imaginary and, in the process, to translate identities and meanings to a possible post-industrial society. Additionally, it touches on the revival of ‘crisis music’ practices in response to ongoing socioeconomic challenges. The chapter suggests that studying music alongside visual and textual mediums provides a comprehensive understanding of deindustrialization’s effects on communities and societal dynamics
Experience of Space in Sound : Perceptions, concepts and methods
No full textThis article addresses the question of experiential dimensions of space in sound, in electroacoustic music and sound arts practices in particular. We suggest that these practices are limited by the generalised way that spatial audio techniques are communicated, and we attempt to develop a tentative method that would enable discussion and sharing of spatial aspects in sonic environments. These modes of articulation would permit a translation of the experience of space in sound into other modalities. Reporting from a series of workshops, we outline a three-phase method that moves through the stages of listening, describing, recreating and imagining the sonic spaces. In the final stage, a speculative design approach shows that shared sonic spatial experiences are essentially relational. Topics relating to expectations, biases and language – such as memory and imagination – and the methods of mapping and speculative design are addressed in the discussion. Through the explorations presented in this article it becomes evident that different artistic musical practices still show the same need to develop articulations that enable the integration and communication of spatial relationships. The divide between the development of new technologies for spatial audio and the conceptual frameworks for understanding and communicating spatial sonic knowledge can be bridged, and eventually the development of spatial audio should be fuelled by the dynamics between these two poles
Issues and Approaches to Gifted Education in Specialist Music Programs Globally : Insights From Institutional Leaders
No full textGlobally, a range of specialized talent development music programs offer training for young musically gifted children to develop their musical abilities to an advanced, professional level of performance. In recent years, various constituencies have reported on significant shortcomings in some of these programs, sparking intense debates concerning the necessity of continuing what they view as overly specialized talent development programs. Presently, there has been no comprehensive and systematic overview of the current situation for gifted children in specialist music education. This qualitative, collective case study examines the current challenges identified by 81 leaders overseeing 68 specialized music programs in 25 countries. Findings reveal a wide array of critical issues and approaches to specialized music education for gifted children that range from a focus on serving the children to a focus on children serving the system. The study emphasizes how diverse stakeholders can recognize gifted children as individuals, and not just as potential musicians who benefit others
Extracting the night : Cultural extractivism and urban nightlife in Helsinki
No full textAdopting the concept of cultural extractivism, this article scrutinises how nightlife activities and spaces for live music are increasingly dependent on the forces of financialisation, which extract layers of material and immaterial assets for economic gain. Underground practices can temporarily disrupt this process, facilitating the emergence of alternative cultural practices; however, this cannot offer adequate lasting solutions and can only be addressed by creating a more equal and fairer city.
Drawing on insights from cultural studies, sociology and urban studies, this work contributes to a nuanced comprehension of the interplay between live music, the urban night, capitalist exploitation and resistance. Through qualitative analysis of interviews with city officials, club owners, party organisers, participants and DJs, the study presents a fresh perspective on the vulnerability of music ecosystems in the context of contemporary urban development
Music Historians as Feminist Activists : Gender Mainstreaming in Contemporary Concert Repertoires
No full textWe are two feminist music historians – Välimäki has a background in musicology, Koivisto-Kaasik in history – who have recently worked together on a joint research project entitled Daughters of Music: Finnish women Composers from the 19th Century to the 20th Century (2018–23). Having carried out extensive archive work with original sources, we have unearthed about one hundred fifty Finnish women composers born between the years 1784 and 1909 who were thus far almost completely neglected in the literature on Finnish music history. The main publication related to the project is a peer-reviewed music-historical encyclopaedia comprising the biographies and list of compositions of 126 composers. Moreover, the encyclopaedia includes extensive introductory and closing chapters discussing methodology and results (Välimäki and Koivisto-Kaasik 2023). -
