The Chinese University Students' English Reading Strategies: An Analysis of the Current Situation and A Proposal for Enhancement

    No full text
English reading strategies and awareness of reading strategies are of great significance for English learners to master and possess high English reading abilities, but in reality, learners' ability to apply English reading strategies is still unsatisfactory. Moreover, this issue seems to be a common and urgent issue for all learners of English as a second language. This study taking a Chinese university (Hunan University of Science and Engineering, HUSE) as an example, using the  Survey of Reading Strategies (SORS) to measure three broad categories of reading strategies, 527 respondents involved,  through comparing data mean values of English majors with non-English majors and the composite mean value of these respondents, found that: (a) English major students have higher reading strategy awareness than non-English major students; (b) English major and non-English major students are at different levels in terms of reading strategy awareness and generally have a moderate level of reading strategies; (c) There is great room for improvement in university students’ reading strategy. Centering on how to make good use of the teaching resources of reading courses and how to use innovative ways and methods to enhance the awareness and ability of college students' reading strategies, this study puts forward four measures, namely, attaching importance to reading strategy education in reading course teaching, attaching importance to the leading role of reading course teachers in improving students' reading strategy level in curriculum teaching, attaching importance to students' main role, and strengthening students' reading strategy training

    Get PDF
This paper explores the relationship between emotional states and English learning performance, aiming to provide insights into the mechanisms through which emotions influence language learning outcomes. The study examines the impact of emotional states on learning engagement and performance, language use and fluency, and investigates the strategies learners employ to regulate their emotions in English learning. The research design utilizes qualitative methods, including semi structured interviews, with a sample of students and teachers from Guilin Medical University. The findings reveal that emotional states significantly affect learning engagement and performance, with positive emotions enhancing motivation and active participation, while negative emotions impede engagement and hinder learning outcomes. Emotional states also influence language use and fluency, with positive emotions improving fluency and negative emotions hindering it. Learners employ various strategies, such as deep breathing exercises and seeking support, to regulate their emotions during English learning. Teacher support is identified as crucial in fostering emotional well-being and creating a supportive learning environment. Cultural and individual factors are found to shape learners' emotional responses in English learning. The results highlight the importance of addressing emotional states in English learning to enhance overall performance and wellbeing, and suggest the need for tailored interventions that consider cultural and individual factors. These findings have practical implications for educators and language practitioners, emphasizing the importance of promoting emotional well being and engagement in English learning contexts

    Get PDF
This qualitative study explores the impact of psychological well-being on the teaching practices of Chinese college English teachers and aims to identify strategies for supporting their well-being. Through semi-structured interviews with five participants, including junior and senior faculty members from Guilin Medical University, key challenges to well-being are identified, such as heavy workloads, limited autonomy, and difficulties in interpersonal relationships. These challenges have significant effects on teaching practices, including reduced student engagement and creativity. The findings demonstrate that higher levels of well-being positively influence instructional practices, leading to increased engagement, motivation, and satisfaction. Autonomy in teaching, competence and effectiveness, and positive student relationships are highlighted as essential factors. The study proposes strategies including autonomy support, competence development, social support, recognition and feedback, and work-life balance to promote the well-being of college English teachers. The research contributes to the literature on teacher well-being, providing insights for educational policymakers, administrators, and teacher training programs to foster a supportive environment for professional growth and effective English language instruction

China-Pakistan Educational and Cultural Cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative

    Get PDF
Implementing the Belt and Road Initiative has increased the focus on cultural and educational cooperation between Pakistan and China. As the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is a key component of the initiative, both countries have sought to diversify their bilateral relationship by promoting cultural and educational exchange. China has sponsored various institutes in Pakistan to teach Chinese Confucianism, language, and culture. Despite Pakistan's openness to interacting with foreign cultures, certain cultural pockets within the country, specifically in Baluchistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, may present challenges in terms of cultural exchange. The ongoing global pandemic has temporarily hindered the implementation of mutual understanding through cultural and educational exchange, but both nations remain committed to resuming these activities in the future. Higher education and cultural tourism have been identified as areas of potential cooperation that can enhance not only public diplomacy but also foster people-to-people contact. The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, as a flagship project of the Belt and Road Initiative, provides a valuable opportunity to develop these areas of cooperation further

A Diagnostic Study on the Use of Vocabulary Learning strategies for English Majors in China

    Get PDF
This research utilizes a descriptive research design to investigate the use of vocabulary learning strategies among English majors and identify the potential reasons for their difficulties in learning vocabulary. The study aims to describe the relationship between these reasons and second language vocabulary acquisition. A questionnaire, consisting of 62 items selected from the Vocabulary Learning Questionnaire (VLQ) 6.4 published by Gu and Johnson (1996), was administered to 115 sophomores majoring in English. The questionnaire was used to determine the types of vocabulary learning strategies employed by the participants, as well as the most and least frequently used strategies. The results indicate that English majors surveyed were moderate users of vocabulary learning strategies. Inferencing strategies were found to be the most commonly used, while Encoding strategies were the least used. After analyzing the participants' vocabulary learning strategies, the study proposes to improve their mother tongue competence to enhance their thinking ability, which is an essential factor in learning English vocabulary. Furthermore, the study suggests that the lack of mother tongue competence courses in higher education and the absence of effective vocabulary learning strategy guidance in the learning process are potential reasons for the difficulties experienced by English majors in vocabulary learning
