Magdalena Fernandez and the ethos of digital geometric abstraction
Get PDFThis paper deals with the work of the Venezuelan artist Magdalena Fernandez whose practice emerges in the 1990s to explore the potentiality of the language of geometric abstraction at the intersection of visual arts and design. Whilst revisiting the legacy of Modernism through a Minimalist aesthetics, Fernandez contributes to the formulation of a grammar of geometric abstraction which articulates by means of digital and multimedia practices. In this regard, emblematic is the mobile painting, 2iPM009, 2009, in which Fernandez extends the canons of formal composition through a multiplicity of registers that integrates spatial, structural, and graphic investigations, all supported by a system of computation that uses digital animation techniques in analogy with sound and light effects through the format of a video-installation. Get PDFThe nineteenth-century women\u27s periodical press was in Portugal the scene of the struggle for the affirmation of women against gender inequality and against discrimination. These women fought against taboos and prejudices of both sexes that prevented equal civil and political rights; the various “emancipations” parity in the education and practice a profession. Contrary to these, other contributors defended conservative positions. A importância do estudo da literatura para a infância na academia: um contributo central e cordial de Maria Laura Bettencourt Pires
Get PDFThe present text is a revisitation of the important book by Professor Maria Laura Bettencourt Pires, indispensable for anyone dedicated to the consistent and persistent study of the subsystem of children\u27s literature and culture in Portugal. It is História da Literatura Infantil em Portugal, published by Vega in 1983 (or 1982, as the several references we found do not agree on the date and the absence of this date in the only edition did not allow us to disambiguate the issue, so we opted for 1983). It is the first systematization, in the academic and editorial panorama, an inaugural stage that is required when a field of study - its history - is established in order to proceed in theorization and application in more consistent approaches to works, authors, and contexts. The work is prefaced by one of the most important figures of the 20th century as regards the dissemination of historical works and figures, Adolfo Simões Müller, a journalist and author who adapted, in easy-to-read versions, classic works and left us accounts of the lives of great universal figures, in a concern to disseminate, to the greatest possible number of readers, culture in the sense of erudition through knowledge of facts. Our text takes particular account of this preface, at the same time provocative and critical of a certain situation that existed at the time of the História\u27s publication, as well as the author\u27s final note. Our choice to focus on these two texts has to do with the relevance of the pioneering work of Professor Maria Laura Bettencourt Pires and her high awareness of the importance of working with a literature that, taking into account, at the time of its creation, the limited skills of younger readers, does not give an inch in literary quality. Even when, in today\u27s eyes, this quality is not detached from certain prejudices and anachronistic practices and ways of thinking, especially when we compare the books published for children then with those published today. To this quality of the work, the professor and researcher adds a perspective that considers international phenomena that give the Portuguese panorama both a specificity and an integration that continue to contribute to the relevance of the study of literature and culture for children and young people in the academy and, we would add, beyond the concern with the training of professionals in primary and secondary education.O presente texto é uma revisitação da importante obra da Professora Maria Laura Bettencourt Pires, incontornável para quem se dedica ao estudo consistente e persistente do subsistema da literatura e cultura infantojuvenil em Portugal. Trata-se da História da Literatura Infantil em Portugal, publicada na editora Vega em 1983 (ou 1982, já que as várias referências que encontrámos não concordam na data e a ausência desta na única edição não nos permitiu desambiguar a questão, pelo que optámos por 1983), e é a primeira sistematização, no panorama académico e editorial, etapa inaugural que se reclama quando se constitui um campo de estudos - a sua história – para prosseguir na teorização e aplicação nas abordagens mais consistentes de obras, autores e contextos. A obra é prefaciada por um dos vultos mais importantes do século XX no que respeita à divulgação de obras e figuras históricas, Adolfo Simões Müller, jornalista e autor que adaptou, em versões de leitura facilitada, obras clássicas e nos deixou relatos das vidas de grandes figuras universais, numa preocupação em disseminar, por um maior número possível de leitores, cultura no sentido de erudição por conhecimento de factos. O nosso texto tem em particular conta esse prefácio, ao mesmo tempo provocador e crítico de uma certa situação que vigorava à data da publicação da História, mas também a Nota Final da autora. A opção pela incidência do nosso foco nestes dois textos, prende-se com a relevância do pioneirismo do trabalho da professora Maria Laura Bettencourt Pires e com a sua elevada consciência da importância de se trabalhar uma literatura que, tendo em conta, no momento da sua criação, as competências limitadas dos leitores mais jovens, não cede um milímetro na qualidade literária. Mesmo quando, aos olhos de hoje, essa qualidade não se desliga de certos preconceitos e de práticas e formas de pensar anacrónicas, sobretudo quando comparamos os livros publicados para crianças então, com os que são publicados nos dias de hoje. A esta qualidade da obra, a Professora e Investigadora acrescenta uma perspetiva que tem em conta fenómenos internacionais que conferem ao panorama português quer uma especificidade, quer uma integração que continuam a contribuir para a relevância do estudo da literatura e cultura para a infância e a juventude na academia e, acrescentamos, para além da preocupação coma formação de profissionais do ensino básico e secundário
Liderança e governação hospitalar: promoção da qualidade de cuidados num país envelhecido
Get PDFThe aging of the population has become a major challenge for most countries worldwide, as well as a focus of research, in the concrete case in the area of nursing. The overall decline in fertility rates and the prolongation of life expectancy per capita in both developed and developing countries since 1996 have led to a resurgence of the elderly population worldwide. Developed countries were the first to experience an aged society and are moving towards hyper-aged societies, as is the Portuguese case. Several population projections also indicate that the aging process of the world\u27s population will accelerate in the coming decades. Through this scenario, this article aims to reflect on hospital leadership and governance in promoting the quality of care in an aging country, based on a literature review methodology.O envelhecimento da população tornou-se um grande desafio para a maioria dos países a nível mundial, bem como um foco de investigação, no caso concreto na área da enfermagem. O declínio geral das taxas de fertilidade e o prolongamento da esperança de vida per capita, tanto nos países desenvolvidos como nos países em desenvolvimento, desde 1996, levaram a um recrudescimento da população idosa em todo o mundo. Os países desenvolvidos foram os primeiros a vivenciar uma sociedade envelhecida e estão a avançar para sociedades hiper-envelhecidas, como é o caso português. Várias projeções populacionais indicam também que o processo de envelhecimento da população mundial irá acelerar nas próximas décadas. Mediante tal cenário, objetiva-se com este artigo refletir sobre a liderança e governação hospitalar na promoção da qualidade de cuidados num país envelhecido, com base numa metodologia de revisão da literatura
