Andrew Kötting’s Louyre: This Our Still Life. An Archival Reading

    Get PDF
The paper explores the experimental documentary Louyre: This Our Still Life (2011) by the subversive British filmmaker Andrew Kötting, drawing on contemporary conceptualizations of archival art. It reads the film as “anarchival” through the lens of Derrida’s psychoanalytic deconstruction of the concept of the archive and the curational discourses that were influenced by it. Furthermore, placing the film within a democratic horizon, the paper argues that the film is also a counter-archive, in that, as a public archive that sublimates trauma, it enunciates counter-hegemonic, non-patriarchal discourses on art, disability and care. &nbsp

The digital tokenisation of non-financial assets: challenges to english private law

    Get PDF
Digital assets are becoming a fundamental part of the modern economy, raising important debates about their nature and that of the rights that attach to them. The digital tokenisation of non-financial assets poses particular challenges for English private law: whether resulting tokens can be treated as property; whether they are “possessable”; and what is the nature of the link that connects them to the assets they represent. This article examines, in particular, whether token-owners acquire them with the expectation of changing their legal rights in the non-financial assets that underlie them, and whether the law should be amended to address these expectations. Ultimately, it is argued that the existing combination of expectations, market practice, common law and statute is currently insufficient to establish – or recommend the establishment of – a particularly strong link between digital tokens and the non-financial assets they represent. The law should go no further than allowing market participants to establish or strengthen such a link through contract, with any further protection to be provided by regulation

The architectural style of the Eastern Orthodox Church temples in the twentieth century, in most countries that were under the Byzantine Empire, has had minor changes since the fall of the Empire. Orthodoxy is traditional for several reasons, one of which is that it is founded on Tradition. Between the Byzantine Rite and the elements- mostly architectural- there is no simple, clear, and direct correspondence. It is quite impossible to understand the rationale behind the liturgy, arts, and architecture, without a historical context of the Church.  Both liturgy and architecture have “an internal logic”, and their development is at different rates. The relationship between the Byzantine Rite and architecture goes through the Orthodox Church along with the meaning of the Byzantine Empire for the Church. The Byzantine architectural style of the churches is dynamic and had a lot of development during the time of the Empire. The use of this style by the Orthodox Church in the twentieth century is related to a complex matrix that starts with Tradition and goes through the prosperity that the Empire gave the Church in the first centuries.

Limits, limitations, and outer boundaries of antitrust: censorship, free speech, and dominance

Big Tech undertakings have much power over what information becomes available online. Concerns have been voiced in this context that some of their content moderation practices may amount to private censorship and a restriction of free speech. Antitrust enforcement could be looked at as one of possible remedies to the risks associated with the use of market power to stifle free speech, since the prohibition of abuse of dominant position is very open-textured. Still, even assuming that an undertaking is dominant, antitrust has its limits and limitations which put free speech cases closer to the outer boundaries of antitrust rather than its core. This article explores those outer boundaries of antitrust and speculates whether private censorship could be framed as an abuse of dominant position. To do so, it discusses the limits and limitations of antitrust and then provides five perspectives from which private censorship could be looked at under antitrust. It concludes that while free speech might seem to constitute a political interest of no relevance to orthodox antitrust enforcement, it is possible to consider it under antitrust to relieve some social tensions generated by mostly unchecked power of large undertakings over speech. While a classic consumer welfare standard perspective can be preserved, more novel types of approaches also remain available, yet they would likely face similar problems as those discussed in the article, i.e., the problem of designing workable standards of assessment

Introduction: Health professionals are daily subjected to high pressures in the work environment, and laughter therapy seems to make a positive contribution to reducing stress, increasing self-esteem and personal satisfaction. Thus, the study aimed to evaluate the benefits of risotherapy in the mood and happiness of health professionals and to identify determining factors in these constructs. Materials and Methods: Quantitative, descriptive-correlational, quasi experimental study of a single group, with pre and post-test. It used a non-probabilistic convenience sample, consisting of 52 health professionals from a Hospital Center in the Center of Portugal. It integrated a sociodemographic and professional questionnaire, the Multidimensional Sense of Humor Scale MSHS and the Scale about Happiness - ESAF. Results: The participants\u27 mood and happiness improved significantly after risotherapy sessions (Z = -4.247; p = .000 vs Z = -4.675; p = .000) and (Z = -1.566; p = .117 vs Z = -1,213; p = .130). Only gender (Z = -3.596 p = 0.000) and age (r = -. 207 p = .141) correlate with mood; and in the case of happiness, only gender (Z = -1,498 p = 0.014) and living in rural areas (Z = -1,580 p = 0,003) showed significant statistical relevance. Discussion The improvements found in the professionals corroborate the results of similar studies. Conclusions: Risotherapy improves the mood and happiness of health professionals, reinforcing the relevance of this complementary therapy in holistic nursing care. Integrou um questionário sociodemográfico e profissional, a Multidimensional Sense of Humor Scale MSHS e a Escala Sobre a Felicidade – ESAF.

The article analyses the Young People’s Society of Christian Endeavour as an example of Protestant sociability in Portugal in the early 20th century. Having its origins in the United States, in the second half of the 19th century, the Christian Endeavor leagues or societies quickly spread to Europe, arriving in Portugal in 1903 by Diogo Cassels, who founded the first League at Vila Nova de Gaia, in the church of Torne, a community of Lusitanian (Anglican) rite. As a particular case study, we evoke the Christian Endeavor League of Prado, established in another Lusitanian church, since the 1920s, revisiting its different mechanisms and strategies of integration and sociocultural animation. We conclude that the Christian Endeavor Leagues functioned as engines of social integration and change, having as their nuclear aim the promotion of the individual, on an ethical level and of personal commitment to Christian faith and religious institutions.

Methods which enhanced the representation of experiences of recovery and addiction in animation

    Get PDF
This discussion considers qualitative and practice methodology as part of a PhD animation project on addiction recovery. This article outlines the data collection process, considers the analysis to production, and illustrate benefits of multi-method research in production. Collaborating with Aiséirí, a long-established addiction treatment service in Ireland, a qualitative study involving three focus groups with recoverees provided various Irish perspectives. The addition of arts-tools within these sessions provided supplementary insights, such as key journey points to recovery, representations of addiction, a cultural window to deeper understanding of the relationship to and perception of addiction and recovery, and visual research for animation development. The analysis worked in an iterative process with film development adapting a thematic analysis. Themes were then developed and created into two animated short films. This article uses examples from The Click (2021) which through its structure showcase 5 distinct journey points found from addiction to recovery

    Get PDF
O artigo examina ramificações do discurso documental.
