Jeeves and the Nostalgia for Unity
This paper argues that the Jeeves saga by P.G. Wodehouse (1881-1975) is imbued with a nostalgia that does not simply pander to the desire to relive or reinstate a particular historical way of life, but is instead part and parcel of Wodehouse’s comic evocation of a stereotyped Englishness. Such an Englishness is in turn tied to notions of a golden pastoral past, a “Merry England” reminiscent of utopias like Eden and Arcadia. The case is then made that this nostalgia amounts to what Albert Camus called a “nostalgia for unity” (Camus 1979, 23), a desire to return to a reality in which the individual is in harmony with both society and Nature, and one that is central to the practice of literature. Ultimately, the conclusion sets forth that the Jeeves saga deals with this nostalgia – a nostalgia for what is likely an impossibility – in the way that its author deals with the cliché: acknowledgement and playfulness
Prazo para a impugnação de sanções disciplinares conservatórias
The present paper concerns the time limit in Portuguese Law for challenging non-dismissal disciplinary measures within the employment relationship. The Law only establishes a specific deadline for employees to contest the most severe disciplinary measure, namely, dismissal for subjective just cause. Faced with this legal loophole, previous court de- cisions and legal writings have presented various solutions regarding the duration and calculation of the deadline. This study evaluates proposed approaches, considering conflicting interests within employment relation- ships and explores the interpretative limitations faced by the court when determining the mentioned time limit.O presente texto versa sobre o prazo no ordenamento jurídico português para a impugnação de sanções disciplinares conservatórias do vínculo laboral. A lei apenas estabelece um prazo para o trabalhador impugnar a sanção disciplinar mais grave, o despedimento sem indem- nização ou compensação. Perante a omissão legal, a jurisprudência e a doutrina têm apresentado várias soluções no que respeita à duração e à contagem do prazo. Examina-se neste estudo não só a adequação das propostas apresentadas tendo em conta os interesses em confronto na relação laboral, como os limites interpretativos a que se encontra sujeito o intérprete-aplicador do Direito na determinação do referido prazo
Computational Creativity Without Computers
Generative artificial intelligence algorithms and applications pose new challenges to the creativity of artists and educators. This study delves into the aesthetic and methodological contradictions of computational creativity, where issues arise from the clash between Romantic aesthetics and the lack of a proper connection between digital and traditional culture. We posit that achieving an inclusive, sustainable, and creative use of digital media requires the development of aesthetically updated proprietary technology rooted in the cultural identities of its origin. Our research is based on a literature review, software design, and artistic practice, and it highlights the importance of the humanities, ethno-computation, and analogical processes and materials. We argue that technology by itself is insufficient in developing the essential skills needed to value computational creativity in artistic production and education
Why Listen with Animals? Straining toward an Environmental Resonance
This article summons John Berger’s essay “Why Look at Animals?”, reframing its analysis on human–animal relations under Modernity (with its emphasis on the gaze at a distance) through the entangled reflexivities of listening together with more-than-humans others. If for Berger, animals “in zoos ... constitute[d] the living monument to their own disappearance,” field recording helped enshrine their extinction while archiving their voices. Here, I intend to stress the significance of more-than-human vibrations and sounds as transformative zones of contact, especially in our increasingly impoverished urban biomes. And by arguing for an expansion of vibrational attention to such social-environmental contexts, re-assess listening as an eco-sensible methodology that understands both humans, more-than-humans and technology as part of integrated ecologies
