An idea of public reason: exclusionary and broad

Any conception of public reason that includes a principle of restraint on certain kinds of reasons, making them inadmissible for the purposes of public political justification, has to be specified according to the following characteristics: 1) the admission of reasons other than those which are part of its content, in which case it can be distinguished as to its exclusivity or inclusivity; and 2) the object of its application – only the basic structure of society or something beyond it – in which case it can be distinguished as to its limits. I will defend an idea of public reason characterized as exclusionary and broad, not admitting reasons that do not belong to the public political culture of pluralist democracies and extending to all matters involving the coercive power of the state. Against an inclusive perspective, I will argue that the fears related to the lack of authenticity of public political discourse are not only unfounded, but that the exclusionary view contributes better to fix the duty of neutral justification in the public political culture. Against a narrow perspective, I will argue that the incompleteness of public reason cannot be determined a priori, and that its limitation to the basic structure is inconsistent with the conditions of reasonable disagreement

Revolution or risk? Exploring AI’s role in enhancing museum visitor experience

As digital technologies redefine cultural engagement, Artificial Intelligence (AI) emerges as a transformative force in museum experiences, balancing innovation and tradition. This paper investigates the dual impact of AI on cultural institutions, analysing its potential to enhance visitor engagement through personalisation, accessibility, and operational efficiency while addressing significant challenges including ethical concerns, data dependency, and risks to cultural authenticity. The study highlights AI’s capability to democratise cultural heritage, drawing from diverse recently implemented examples, such as AI-powered art restoration, immersive VR/AR experiences, and adaptive educational tools. However, limitations surrounding infrastructure, algorithmic bias, and privacy underscore the need for strategic, ethical governance. By navigating these complexities, museums can leverage AI to enrich public interaction with heritage while safeguarding their foundational mission of cultural stewardship. Based on recent European Parliament briefings and regulations, this research offers actionable frameworks for institutions aiming to integrate AI responsibly, to foster innovation that honors technological potential and humanistic values. &nbsp

Connecting art histories through messy data: rethinking museum database interfaces for (curatorial) research

    No full text
The digitization of museum collections has vastly expanded access to cultural heritage, yet current museum database interfaces remain structurally limited, offering rigid search functionalities that hinder exploratory and in-depth art historical and curatorial research. This paper introduces Connecting Art Histories Through Messy Data (Structures), a prototype web application designed to address the disconnect between data availability and usability on fine arts museum websites. The tool enables researchers and professionals to upload collection data, enrich it with external datasets, and query it through an SQLite interface, accompanied by an integrated AI assistant. The app is not about the completeness or precision of the data, nor about spectacular data visualizations, but about the possibilities that emerge from embracing incompleteness and imprecision–messy data (structures). Special features include an add gender tool and a geographic mapping function that beyond their functionality reveal structural inconsistencies and prompt further investigation into missing data, historical attributions, and categorization practices
