A transatlantic perspective on interoperability and platform design after android auto: the Luxembourg effect?
The decision delivered by the European Court of Justice in Android Auto may represent a watershed moment in competition policy for digital markets. By requiring dominant platforms to accommodate third-party requests to enable interoperability, the judgment could significantly affect their design and business models, with effects extending well beyond the geographical boundaries of the EU. In this regard, from a transatlantic perspective, the judgment deepens the traditional divide with the U.S. approach to refusal to deal and may prove more disruptive than the European Digital Markets Act (DMA). To this end, and in contrast with the muchcelebrated Brussels effect, this paper investigates whether the principle affirmed by the Luxembourg judges may prove more effective in advancing the DMA’s objective of achieving interoperability by design
Strategies for translating Portuguese culinary into French: The case of dish names on websites
The total social fact that cooking represents, and the culinary practices associated with it and which are transmitted in particular by the recipes, are bearers of cultural values, and these are also present in different media. In this respect, websites featuring Portuguese cooking recipes in French can be taken as interesting vehicles of Culture-Specific Items (CSI) (Franco Aixelá, 1996), which remain a challenge in the process of cultural transmission and therefore of translation. Of the various parts of a recipe, the one that is the focus of this study is the title, the name of the dish. Although it is concise, easy to remember and to find in a list or index, its primary function is to name a very particular practice in which the cultural aspect is fundamental. This is where the difficulty lies in translating certain names of dishes, which are sometimes quite difficult to obtain but also not necessarily desirable, at the risk of losing the historical and cultural dimension of the term. One question that arises is why some recipe names remain untranslated, and are all these untranslated words left for the same reasons? This article focuses on these culture-specific items in two French-language Portuguese cooking websites and what translating strategies are present on the one hand and, on the other, on the cultural factors that govern this need to adapt them to readers. In terms of method, after an initial theoretical reflection on the cultural specificities of gastronomic discourse, we present a state of translational research on the transposition of cultural aspects in general (Molina & Albir 2002) and in the audiovisual field (Naulin 2014). Then, these culture-specific items in Portuguese are listed, along with the procedures followed to establish a typology of translator strategies used for the names of Portuguese dishes in the French versions of these recipes.
A adequação social da conduta e a correção de menores. Comentário do Acórdão do Tribunal da Relação de Évora de 20 de fevereiro de 2024
This article seeks to reflect on the content of parental responsibilities in the field of children’s education and correction, revisiting the long-standing question of whether physical punishment may, in exceptional circumstances, be tolerated under criminal law. The discussion takes as its starting point the judgment of the Évora Court of Appeal of 20 February 2024, which invoked the notion of social adequacy of conduct to exclude the typical unlawfulness of a father’s behaviour towards his four-year-old daughter, whom he addressed in insulting and humiliating terms and slapped when she ran out of the house to meet her grandmother waiting in the street.

Tasting Partition: Constructing imaginary homelands through culinary memories
People displaced from their homeland feel unbelonging in the adopted land, as their belongingness has adhered to a home from the past that is lost in time and cannot be returned to. The culinary differences of the host culture are also continuous reminders of the exile. This sense of loss gives birth to the process of joining the fragmented memories to negotiate with the experiences of hurt and construct imaginary homelands. In this paper, we will trace the culinary reimaginations of the lost homelands in two Bangla texts, Dayamayeer Katha (2008), a memoir by Sunanda Sikdar, and Indubala Bhaater Hotel (2021), a novel by Kallol Lahiri.
Bengal witnessed numerous fluxes of refugees migrating during the Partition of India and Pakistan in 1947 that continued even after the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971. Both texts are narratives of the Hindu refugee women reconstructing their lost homelands (desh). Though the two texts belong to different genres, they exhibit similar use of food ekphrasis to present a complex phenomenology of refugeehood. In Sikdar’s memoir, food is the embodied reality of the differences that are purported to be the underlying cause behind Hindu-Muslim and intercaste conflicts, offering the affected people’s reflection on the event of Partition. Lahiri’s novel deals with a refugee woman’s journey towards self-realisation and a silent holding onto the past through a personal engagement with food and recipes. The two texts reveal experiential nuances from the interactions of gender, caste, religion, class, and nationality. This paper shall investigate how, through food memories, desh is conceived as the embodiment of conviviality that has been irreversibly lost. In refugee narratives, culinary memories have the latent desire to return to the collaborative existence in the lost desh. They also become instrumental in the process of seeking rehabilitation amidst the alienation faced in the adopted land. With memory as the point of departure for studying the ‘food past,’ this paper will explore the working of historical consciousness in the culinary imagination of the homeland and explore the Partition and the shaping of identities as affected in the representation of food in literature.
Woman. Life. Freedom—and Falude: Female food writers in the Iranian diaspora and the taste of home
Iranian cuisine is rapidly establishing itself as a celebrated staple in the gastronomic scene, as well as for the ambitious home cook. Food traditions frequently serve as a means of collective memory for a diaspora, and the experiences of the 1979 Islamic revolution have brought many Iranians to an exilic lifestyle, with significant communities in North America and Western Europe. This ‘positive’ food trend stands in stark contrast with the ongoing portrayal of Iranian people in the media, due to extensive conflicts of its Islamic government with the West, neighbouring countries, and not lastly, its own citizens. Curiously, this narrative of connecting food and cultural memory is highly represented by female Iranian diaspora authors and food writers over the last years, while the ongoing protests in Iran are to some extent a female-led revolution as well. The Iranian diaspora has been displaying some strong themes of differentiating between ‘Iranian’ and ‘Persian’ cuisine and culture, nostalgia for a pre-revolution and even pre-Islamic Iran is frequently expressed, as customs dating back to Zoroastrian Persia are highly emphasised and preserved both in and outside Iran. The emergence of Iranian cuisine being celebrated abroad, particularly through the writings of female diaspora authors, serves as a medium for preserving and destigmatising Iranian/Persian cultural identity. This culinary revival can serve as resistance against the dominant narratives of Iran associated with its current Islamic regime, while simultaneously reclaiming pre-Islamic and pre-revolutionary cultural roots, offering a way for the diaspora to maintain and reconstruct a collective memory.
O trabalho nas plataformas digitais e o artigo 12º-A do código do trabalho: concretizações jurisprudenciais
This article examines the new legal presumption of employment under Article 12-A of the Portuguese Labour Code, introduced by Law No. 13/2023 to address work performed through digital platforms. Starting from a critical reflection on the temporal application of the rule, it defends its retrospective application to contracts still in force on the date of the law’s entry into force, contrary to the prevailing case law. The article engages with a range of judicial decisions from Portuguese courts of appeal, highlighting interpretative inconsistencies in the classification of platform workers’ employment status. Through doctrinal and case law analysis, it proposes a dynamic understanding of legal subordination suited to the digital era, particularly where algorithmic management is present. The integration of the service provider into the organisational structure of the platform is emphasised as a central criterion.O presente artigo analisa a nova presunção legal de laboralidade prevista no artigo 12.º-A do Código do Trabalho, introduzida pela Lei n.º 13/2023 no contexto do trabalho prestado através de plataformas digitais.

Introduction: Children\u27s health vulnerability is multifactorial; it arises from a combination of several factors that place children at risk. Objectives: To map the existing scientific evidence and literature regarding health vulnerability in the pediatric population and in nursing care. Materials and Methods: A Scoping Review was conducted following the methodology suggested by the Joanna Briggs Institute. A search was conducted in the CINAHL Complete®, Pubmed®, and Scopus® databases from February to April 2024, using DeCS/MeSH descriptors in Portuguese and English. Results: In this scoping review, 13 studies were eligible for inclusion, primarily exploratory and literature reviews. Their publication dates were between 2006 and 2024. The selected articles address the topic of health vulnerability in children, which were grouped as follows: health diagnoses with a higher risk of vulnerability; belonging to the LGBTI+ group; Habits, behaviours, and lifestyles; and the impact of context. The data highlight the important role of nursing interventions in preventing disease, developing healthy behaviours, empowering children and families, and improving health outcomes. Conclusion: The need to promote and streamline scientific research in Portugal on health vulnerability in children is emphasized to enable better, more individualised nursing care for the pediatric population. The relationship between the concept of health vulnerability and specific health diagnoses, minority populations, high-risk habits, and context was verified.Introducción: La vulnerabilidad sanitaria infantil es multifactorial y surge de la combinación de diversos factores que ponen en riesgo al niño.
