Well-being is dead, long live well-being!

My primary concern in this paper is with how answering a central metaethical question about well-being impacts work on substantive theories of well-being. Specifically, I argue that well-being invariantism is a priori untenable and hence that any attempt to establish one or more substantive prudential goods as the ‘essence’ of well-being is doomed to failure. I further argue that a priori considerations establish the truth of well-being contextualism. Importantly, the truth of well-being contextualism does not undermine the possibility of making objective, substantive well-being claims. Once a context or orientation is established, the relevant standards become clear and derivative objective judgments are possible. The upshot of this paper is that philosophers should abandon the attempt to establish any invariant substantive claims about well-being as such (well-being invariantism is dead). Instead, we should focus on clarifying the most important contexts in which we wish to make well-being claims and seek to make progress in those (long live well-being)

Ortega on liberalism and democracy: revisiting an old discussion

In this paper I address the problem of Ortega’s liberalism. I try to characterize Ortega’s liberal creed considering his well-known statemen, in The Revolt of the Masses, that the 20th century needs a liberalism different from the 19th century one. I argue that some traits of Ortega’s liberalism, namely, Ortega’s concern with social rights, can also be found in some liberal authors of the Weimar Republic. However, my central claim in this paper is that the kind of liberalism Ortega proposes is only understandable in the light of its philosophical groundwork. I also try to highlight the changes in Ortega’s concept of liberalism, from his early liberal socialism (under the influence of Paul Natorp) to the mature liberalism that follows Ortega’s acceptance of phenomenology, of which we find a document in Meditations on Quixote of 1914 and in “New and old politics”, published in the same year. On the basis of this phenomenological turn, Ortega will propose a distinction between liberalism and democracy, as two different answers to two different problems. Finaly, I discuss the hypotheses of the existence of a third phase in Ortega’s liberalism, more pessimistic and conservative, of which evidence can be found in his essay On the Romam Empire

RV Hospitalidade e liderança sociopedagógica: as perceções dos pedagogos sociais

    No full text
The text presents the results of a study on how relational values, associated with the principle of hospitality, are experienced and perceived as a quality of pedagogical leadership in socio-educational institutions. To this end, we studied social pedagogues’ perceptions of values in the context of pedagogical leadership based on the value of hospitality. In methodological terms, we opted for a strategy of direct enquiry of actors through semi-structured interviews.

    Get PDF
This study sought to understand the practices of educators at the Instituto Federal Catarinense (IFC) regarding the assessment of learning in Integrated Secondary Education. This is an exploratory, qualitative and basic research, which used documentary research, the application of questionnaires and the holding of a thematic workshop as methodological procedures. The interpretation of the information was based on Discursive Textual Analysis (Moraes, 2003). The results indicate that, although educators recognize the principles of the integrated curriculum and formative assessment, practices linked to traditional classification models still predominate. A contradiction was also observed between the theoretical understanding of the participants and their actual practices, as well as the need for continuous formative actions for an effective change of paradigms. This research contributes to the debate on assessment in EPT and points to the urgency of strengthening the dialogue between critical theory and assessment practices.

This article intends to present a new historiographical reading of the inquisitorial phenomenon. Starting with a discussion of the historiographical and terminological considerations developed since the final decades of the twentieth century, we propose to address: the “medieval” character of the office of the inquisitio; the role played by the Papacy in the creation of this juridical institution and its later use in a “universalist” perspective; the development of modern inquisitorial systems and their relations and interactions. This will allow us to focus on analyzing the impact of the Inquisition(s) on the different societies of the Ancien Regime, from the European states to their colonial territories, including the complex relationships between the three inquisitorial systems. We stress the importance of integrated investigation of the various social frameworks, but also of the power groups that formed under the auspices of the institution and with attention to the varying degrees of relations as well as perceptions generated by the inquisitorial machine within societies.

From concept to exhibition: on the creative process of an AI-driven stereoscopic video installation

    No full text
This paper explores the creative process surrounding spectral spaces, an AI-driven video installation that reinterprets stereoscopic imaging through contemporary digital techniques. By combining generative AI with optical principles, the work challenges conventional visual perception, creating an unstable, fluctuating field of engagement. The installation adopts a structured viewing approach that encourages an individualized interaction, heightening awareness of the act of seeing. Through a juxtaposition of historical apparatuses and algorithmically generated imagery, it examines the evolving relationship between materiality and digital intangibility. Audience responses gathered during its exhibition provided insights into the perceptual dynamics at play, revealing how the interplay of stereoscopy and artificial intelligence fosters sustained exploration and introspection. The findings suggest that this approach not only expands the expressive possibilities of stereoscopic media but also raises critical questions about the mediation of vision through technology, illustrating how reimagined historical techniques can inform and transform contemporary artistic practices

Creative digital intelligence: reshaping art, experience, and heritage in the post-digital era

This article explores the transformative role of Creative Digital Intelligence (CDI), at the intersection of art, technology, and cultural heritage in the post-digital era, as the central theme for a special issue of the Journal of Science and Technology of the Arts (JSTA). It looks at how CDI—sitting at the crossroads of artificial intelligence, immersive technologies, and post-digital aesthetics—is reshaping artistic practices, enhancing audience experiences, and preserving cultural heritage. Acting as both a theoretical backdrop and a contextual framework, the article highlights key concepts like rematerialisation, and human–machine co-creativity, providing a perspective through which the contributions in this issue can be understood and appreciated. By referencing standout projects such as Spectral Spaces, Fios de Silere, Hands, and MultipliCity, it places the works featured in the special issue within larger discussions about multisensory engagement, creative processes, and ethical dilemmas. Collectively, the articles of this special issue, examine the possibilities and challenges of CDI, fostering a shared contemplation on the future of art and cultural knowledge in our post-digital world

Algumas insuficiências do Sacramento da Penitência

    Get PDF
The main objective of this study is to analyze the shortcomings of the Sacrament of Penance, in view of the evident crisis it is facing, with the aim of proposing a reevaluation of its liturgical practice. The methodology includes a critical review of theological literature and ecclesiastical documents, with an emphasis on Latin American Theology and the teaching of Pope Francis. The results reveal that penance often distances itself from evangelical practice, is ritually impoverished, is assumed as a prerequisite for participation in the Eucharist, and does not respond adequately to social and ecological sins, which demand a structural and collective conversion. The main contribution of this study lies in the indication of liturgical approaches that integrate the dimensions of social and ecological sin, and rescue the celebration of the Sacrament of Penance from the communal dimension of the Christian faith as a place of encounter with God’s mercy. This research, therefore, not only exposes the deficiencies in current sacramental practice, but also suggests ways to revitalize its liturgy, promoting greater involvement of the Christian community, including the promotion of social justice and the preservation of the Common Home.
