Fish age reading and otolith analysis using deep learning
Fish age reading is a crucial step in the proper management of fisheries. To determine the fish age, several methods have been developed making use of fish structures that give clues on fish growth throughout the different seasons. Supported by years of extensive research and validation efforts, the use of otoliths (ear stones) has become the standard approach.
Within otoliths, there are growth rings (annuli) that form patterns through uneven calcium carbonate deposition influenced mainly by seasonal factors affecting the fish growth. Hence, the traditional age reading methodology works by visual inspection and manual counting of these rings to derive the fish age. However, certain cases make the process problematic and error-prone. As these errors have big impact on fisheries management, it is important to explore ways on how these can be prevented.
The field of computer vision provides a means to make the process of age reading less reliant on subjective interpretations. Using otolith images, many studies applied classical image processing techniques that take advantage of the changes on image intensity when traversing the otolith from the center to the outer edge.
With the progress in artificial intelligence (AI), computer vision methods have taken a new level of sophistication. Using machine learning algorithms, AI models are trained to learn the patterns of growth on the otolith. Early approaches in this direction utilized classical algorithms such as Support Vector Machines (SVMs) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) and some also employed feature engineering in order to create meaningful feature sets (e.g., intensity signals) to be used by the algorithms.
Recently, deep learning (DL) algorithms such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have gain substantial popularity as they outperform those classical machine learning methods. Early works on DL-based fish age reading have shown excellent accuracy on estimating the fish age based on otolith images. However, the main drawback is that they are formulated as classification or regression making them incompatible with traditional ring counting protocols.
In this thesis project, a different perspective for using deep learning on the task of fish age reading was explored. The methods applied were designed to specifically detect and annotate the annuli which are then counted to derive the fish age. Two different object detection and segmentation algorithms were used namely, Mask R-CNN and U-Net. In this thesis, the effectiveness of the two methods was demonstrated along with the tools developed to make the approaches widely accepted by the community. In addition, the study elucidated advanced techniques to improve the accuracy further and also highlighted additional related tasks for general otolith analysis that both algorithms managed to perform effectively
Data-driven cloud cover parameterizations for the ICON earth system model using deep learning and symbolic regression
This thesis delves into the improvement of cloud parameterizations in climate models through machine learning trained on coarse-grained output from high-resolution simulations. Utilizing the ICOsahedral Non-hydrostatic (ICON) modeling framework, it specifically targets the enhancement of cloud cover parameterization within the ICON Earth System Model. Three types of neural networks (NNs) differing in vertical locality are developed to estimate cloud cover, with globally trained NNs even applicable to distinct regional simulations. Interpretability analysis exposes model-specific biases and local relationships with the thermodynamic environment. Despite achieving high predictive performance, NNs necessitate post-hoc interpretation tools. To tackle this issue, a combined hierarchical modeling framework incorporating symbolic regression, feature selection, and physical constraints is proposed. The resulting equations, characterized by simplicity and physical consistency, attain performance comparable to NNs while demonstrating superior transferability to other realistic datasets. Our best equation adeptly captures cloud cover distributions across various regimes, notably excelling in representing marine stratocumulus clouds by learning to utilize the vertical relative humidity gradient. This research underscores the potential of deep learning in achieving accurate cloud parameterizations and emphasizes the effective role of symbolic regression in deriving interpretable, consistent equations for cloud cover

Robust Model Predictive Control-Based Energy Management System for the Island Power System of Suðuroy, Faroe Islands
In this paper a robust Model Predictive Control (MPC)-based Energy Management System (EMS) is developed and investigated for the case study of Suðuroy, Faroe Islands, under uncertainties resulting from real data. This island power system comprises volatile renewable energy sources, synchronous machines and a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). In the presented robust MPC both uncertainties from the wind farm power and load demand forecasts are considered. Simulation results are derived from data of one week focusing on the diesel generators’ operational costs and the BESS usage. A comparison against a deterministic MPC-based EMS as well as historical grid operation data is performed. In the presented case study it is shown that both the deterministic MPC and the robust MPC provide significant economic benefits compared to the current grid operation. It is also found that the robust MPC achieves similar performance to the deterministic MPC regarding operational costs. Increased robustness gained through higher state of charge of the BESS is not traded for higher operational costs, highlighting the advantages of the robust MPC-based EMS.6519652
The Refiguration of Public Communication: A Relational and Process-oriented Perspective
In the field of communication and media research, the "public sphere" and its "structural
change" have long been central themes, particularly in the development of communication
within society and politics. However, this concept often suffers from an imprecise norma-
tive profile and vague empirical scope. This paper introduces a novel theoretical approach
that emphasizes a more rigorous relational and process-oriented perspective. We propose
conceptualizing the transformation of public communication as a process of refiguration.
First, we examine media-environmental changes through the lens of mediatization theory.
Then, we explore how this shift in public communication can be understood as refigura-
tion, highlighting that public communication is not confined to a singular public sphere but
involves the transformation of relational dynamics among at least three distinct types of
publics. Finally, we discuss how this relational and process-oriented perspective can be
analytically realized. While our argument is grounded in extensive empirical research, this
paper primarily aims to make a theoretical contribution.004
The impact of electron acceptor variation and reactive oxygen species on microbial respiration rates
This thesis investigates how redox fluctuations in environments with chemical gradients, and the reactive oxygen species often produced by such fluctuations, affect microbial metabolism in permeable sediments in the German Wadden Sea and wastewater photogranules. Manuscript 1 finds that sulfate and nitrate reduction occur simultaneously, and that sulfate reduction rates are correlated with rates of dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonia in permeable sediments from the German Wadden Sea. Manuscript 2 finds that enzymatically removing reactive oxygen species from incubations of Wadden Sea sediments increases rates of sulfate and iron reduction and well as aerobic respiration. Furthermore, H2O2 was found in the upper sediments, controlling early diagenesis. Manuscript 2 also finds that while sulfate reduction does not occur simultaneously to oxygen consumption in permeable Wadden Sea sediments, it recovers instantly upon anoxia, meaning that the cells and their metabolic apparatus are not damaged by oxygen. Manuscript 3 finds that the removal of reactive oxygen species does not affect rates of denitrification or dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonia. It also finds that pretreatment of sediments with oxygen can increase sulfate reduction in the subsequent anoxic period. Furthermore, it finds that ROS can decrease sulfate reduction even in sediments that have not been recently exposed to oxygen. Manuscript 4 finds that wastewater photogranules are well adapted to extreme changes in nutrient and oxygen concentrations, performing carbon fixation over a large range of nutrient concentrations. It also finds evidence of aerobic denitrification.
Overall, this thesis finds that resident microbes are well adapted to environments with frequent redox changes, and exhibit “braided” use of electron acceptors. It nonetheless finds that the reactive oxygen species produced over oxic-anoxic transitions can substantially decrease microbial activity
Sozialwissenschaften in dritter Mission.
