Melt Ponds on Arctic Summer Sea Ice from Optical Satellite Data

    No full text
The presence of melt ponds on Arctic summer sea ice strongly alters the absorption of solar radiation by the sea ice-ocean system and thereby the Arctic energy budget. Therefore, melt ponds are key to the positive sea ice-albedo feedback, which is one of the main drivers of the amplified Arctic warming observed in recent decades, and even affects the global climate. To analyze the mechanisms of melt pond evolution and their implications on the sea ice state, and to improve their representation in climate models, comprehensive observational data are needed. This dissertation presents a new approach to retrieve melt pond, sea ice and open ocean fractions at pan-Arctic scales from Sentinel-3 optical satellite data. The newly developed Melt Pond Detection 2 (MPD2) algorithm is the first fully physical retrieval that can distinguish these three surface types at the spatial resolution of 1.2 km. Because multiple combinations of surface type fractions result in similar observations at this coarse resolution, prior information are required for retrieval. As part of the development process, a reference data set of 33 local melt pond fraction maps with a spatial resolution of 10 m has been created from Sentinel-2 satellite data. Parts of these data were then used to calibrate an empirical pre-retrieval to provide preliminary estimates of surface type fractions. In addition, the correlation between sea ice optical properties and air temperature history has been investigated using measurement data from field campaigns. This correlation and the results of the pre-retrieval are used to initialize and constrain the physical retrieval. The results are validated against the full extent of the reference data set, leading to an uncertainty estimate of 7.8 % and 9 % for the melt pond and open ocean fractions, respectively. The MPD2 algorithm has been applied to seven years of Sentinel-3 observations from 2017 to 2023. This data set can be continued for future years and expanded by the application to previous satellite sensors. Finally, the newly produced data set has been used to study regional differences in melt pond evolution: the lowest melt pond fractions are found in the Central Arctic with low seasonal variability, and the highest fractions are observed in the landfast ice-dominated Canadian Archipelago; the highest seasonal and interannual variability are observed in the Beaufort Sea. Additionally, a pan-Arctic analysis correlating the melt pond fraction product with sea ice surface roughness data has been carried out: this showed that flat sea ice features higher melt pond fractions at the beginning of the melt season, while later in the season melt pond fractions tend to be higher on deformed sea ice

Essays on the macroeconomic interrelations of human and nature

The global system, and therefore humanity, is increasingly threatened by ecological problem situtations. Primarily driven by economic activities, such as resource extraction and the intensive use of fossil fuels, ecological limits are increasingly being exceeded and tipping points with unpredictable dynamic reactions are being risked. These interrelationships are described in the introductory chapter, focussing on the global context. Specific aspects are considered in the subsequent chapters. Firstly, the connection between resource extraction and biodiversity loss is considered, as well as the possible role of governance mechanisms in this relationship. Secondly, convergence dynamics of global meat consumption are then analysed and influencing factors, such as rising income but also institutional and cultural factors like e.g. religion, are considered. In the final section, the effect of green technologies in the form of environmental innovation on carbon dioxide emissions is considered in order to analyse the thesis of directed technical changes in terms of its effectiveness in tackling environmental problems

The Atmospheric Transport in the Western Pacific Region by Measurements and Model Simulations

The major pathway for air entering the stratosphere is over the Tropical Western Pacific (TWP) region, and this key region influences the atmospheric composition in the stratosphere. Motivated by this, we used trace gas measurements by using the Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectrometer and cirrus cloud measurements by using a ground-based COMpact Cloud Aerosol Lidar, COMCAL from the atmospheric observatory at Koror, Palau (7.34°N, 134.47°E}, in the heart of the Pacific warm pool) and combined model simulations to study the transport pathways, with a special focus on the stratosphere-troposphere exchange (STE) processes over this key region. The atmospheric transport dynamics in the TWP region are closely linked to the movements of the circulation system, particularly the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) associated with the up-welling branch of the Hadley cell. Given the limitations of traditional ITCZ indicators, such as the maximum tropical rain belt to determine the air mass origins, I have developed a tool termed the Chemical Equator (CE), modified from Hamilton et al., (2008) to study the Inter-hemispheric Transport (IHT). The CE is calculated by the model simulation of an artificial passive tracer by GEOS-Chem to discern the migration patterns of circulation systems and air mass origins. Subsequently, the CE was used to characterize tropospheric carbon monoxide (CO) and ozone (O3) column measurements using the FTIR Spectrometer and the ozone sondes, respectively. The observed low CO and O3 during summer and early autumn, contrasting with maxima in winter and early spring, were outlined by the seasonal meridian movement of the CE. Additionally, comparisons were made between CE and commonly used IHT indicators, such as satellite measurements of methane (CH4) and CO, and model simulations of sulfur hexafluoride (SF6). Particularly, the position of CE demonstrated agreement with the meridional gradient boundary of those trace gases. Consequently, the impact of IHT on the seasonal variation of the trace gases in the tropospheric TWP region suggests that CE holds the potential to differentiate diverse air mass origins influenced by large-scale atmospheric circulation. Upper-air observations targeting the Upper Troposphere and Lower Stratosphere (UTLS) were performed to detect cirrus cloud layers using Lidar, COMCAL. The annual cycle shows that cloud layer height peaks with the highest Cold Point Tropopause (CPT) in winter and reaches its minimum with the lowest CPT in summer. In comparison with similar cirrus cloud measurements obtained in other tropical sites, our measurements reveal that cirrus clouds detected over TWP are the coldest and highest. The prevalence of the coldest cirrus cloud layer detected over Palau corresponds to the cold trap, a region of exceptionally cold air, in UTLS over the TWP region. In order to build the relationship between STE in the UTLS region and measurements, we conducted trajectory analysis by Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) model simulations based on cirrus cloud layer measurements. Our observation results reveal that only in winter with high supersaturation at the measured cirrus clouds, the air masses are further dehydrated and slowly ascend into the stratosphere. Conclusively, we present an atmospheric transport scheme over the TWP region based on horizontal IHT and vertical STE processes and provide observational and model simulation support for it. In the lower heights, from the surface to the free troposphere, the transport and air mass origins are characterized by the meridian movement of the CE. In the UTLS region, measurements of cloud layers and trajectories validate the pathways of STE. During summer, pristine air from the Pacific Ocean reaches Palau, with oceanic short-lived species injected into the stratosphere through rare and the highest overshooting tops. Conversely, Southeast Asia dominates air mass origins over the TWP region in winter, transporting a high level of anthropogenic species, such as O3 and CO, into the stratosphere via the pathway within the cold trap. This winter-specific cold trap pathway, seasonally persisting over Palau, plays a crucial role in altering the stratospheric atmosphere through the transport of troposphere-originate air masses

Bridging Individual Behavior and Technological Solutions in Climate Change Mitigation

    No full text
Effectively combating climate change requires a dual approach: individual and industrial transformation. However, to mitigate climate change the synergies between individual Pro-Environmental Behavior (PEB) and climate engineering techniques, such as Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), have often been neglected, thereby promoting only one of them. This study examines the relationship between PEB and the acceptance of CCS, taking into account attitudes toward climate change, norms, trust, and uncertainty aversion. Our analysis of survey data reveals a positive relationship between PEB and the acceptance of CCS, with PEB serving as a mediator linking attitudes toward climate change to CCS-acceptance. Our findings demonstrate the urgency of advancing PEB and technology-integrated strategies for climate mitigation. Therefore, this study contributes to the ongoing conversation about how to combine technological solutions with individual actions to successfully mitigate climate change.Klaus Tschira Foundation (#00.003.2022) & Federal Ministry of Health.240

    No full text
Diaryliodonium salts are versatile reagents used for various applications that include electrophilic arylations, building larger cyclic scaffolds, benzyne precursors, and organocatalysis. This thesis presents the synthesis and structural elucidation of novel structures containing two iodonium units in peri-substitution, where a rather repulsive interaction was observed via X-ray crystallography. Furthermore, mixed iodo-iodonium salts were obtained by oxidising only one iodine atom. These were also investigated via X-ray crystallography showing an interaction between the two iodine atoms by coordination of the iodide into the sigma hole of the iodonium salt, resulting in a significantly lowered interatomic distance. In a second project, a continuous multi-step flow procedure was developed for the generation of cyclic diaryliodonium salts from readily available benzyl acetates and alcohols. Combining a Friedel-Crafts step with an anodic oxidation resulted in a method offering a better atom economy combined with a scalable setup. In a third project, cyclic diaryliodonium salts were generated from protected thyroxine. It was possible to generate the corresponding oxidised free thyroxine as well as triiodothyronine. The latter by selective deiodination. The mechanism of this deiodination was investigated via DFT calculations showing resemblance with enzymatic processes with involved halogen bonding. This was also confirmed experimentally as selective coordination to one iodine(I) atom was observed

    No full text
