Klienten*innendokumentation der ambulanten Glücksspielsuchtberatungen in Niedersachsen 2017-2023

    No full text

    Definability problems for tree transducers

    No full text

    No full text

Towards a planetary-scale observing system for marine microbes: enhancing the interoperability and legacy of marine microbial data and metadata through a transparent, accessible, and coordinated network of omics data

    No full text
Marine microbes are vital to ocean ecosystems, driving nutrient cycling, primary production, and climate regulation. Omics-enabled microbial observations are crucial for understanding, predicting, and sustainably managing these dynamic systems. By analyzing DNA, organisms can be identified, and their functions predicted, offering a unified approach to biological observation across all life forms. Complementing established methods, omics observations provide insights into ocean health, establish baselines for change, fuel discoveries, and inform policy decisions. However, advances in microbiome research are often not scaled or sustained globally, and digital outputs frequently fail to translate into integrated awareness and discovery. This thesis builds the basis for an interoperable observing system for marine microbes so that innovation and discovery contribute towards a FAIR digital commons that is operationally sound and coordinated across regions and research domains. Chapters II and VI focus on global coordination by establishing key networks that unify stakeholders through a common vision, laying the groundwork for a cohesive observing system. Chapter III enhances interoperability of (meta)data across different platforms by building a sustainable translation layer between the main metadata standards in omics biodiversity data, while Chapter V advances the standardization and accessibility of observational methods, improving method comparability and data integration. Chapter VII assesses the current state of metadata in public archives, identifying gaps and suggesting improvements, and Chapter VIII introduces an omics data paper type to incentivise better metadata management practices. Chapter IV tests the feasibility of integrating metagenomics data across observatories, providing analysis-ready metadata and a reproducible workflow. Further, it synthesizes a perspective on maximizing current and future opportunities in marine microbial observing and research

The response of calcareous nannofossils to carbon cycle perturbations during the early Eocene

    No full text
This thesis examines the geological past to understand potential consequences of climate change, focusing on the early Eocene (56–49 Ma), a period of extreme warmth and elevated CO2. Marine sediments from International Ocean Drilling Program 378, recovered south of New Zealand, provide a record of these events. The first part of the study constructed a high-resolution age model to track warming events and revealed diachroneity in calcareous nannofossil datums, suggesting this may be a feature of early Paleogene high-latitude sites. The second part analyzes the impact of warming on nannoplankton, finding a response to transient warming events, with significant changes occurring prior to the Early Eocene Climatic Optimum. The third part presents evidence of enhanced silica content in South Pacific sediments during hyperthermals, supporting the idea of a global cooling mechanism involving silicate weathering and marine productivity

Platform Governance and Social Justice: Governing Hate Speech on Social Media

    No full text
Without a doubt, platforms govern us, and they themselves are governed (Gorwa, 2019). However, despite academic efforts to clarify this division, a subtle discursive connection exists between external regulations and how platforms adopt, apply and transform them. Hate speech regulation exemplifies this phenomenon. Hate speech and its tradition have always invoked the political values of freedom, equality and security. In alluding to these values and implementing consequential hate speech regulation, platforms have forged a connection with the tradition of hate speech while adapting the meaning to serve their own interests. As a result, there is no disruption in discourse, but rather a continuity that positions social media platforms as key shapers of the larger hate speech regulation debate.9310

The influence of key enabling technologies on technological innovation

    No full text
Key enabling technologies (KETs) have gained attention in science and policy due to their multidisciplinary nature and their ability to link distant knowledge fields, endowing them with a central role in recombinant innovation processes. However, it remains under-researched whether KETs generally have a higher influence on innovation processes than non-KETs. This study addresses the question by using propensity score matching and regression analysis. First, a balanced dataset is created through matching KET patents to non-KET patents that stem from a comparable context. Subsequently, it is analyzed whether KET patents are associated with higher forward citation frequencies than non-KETs. The results show that KETs receive more citations on average, but it appears that this effect is driven by a few very impactful patents. The results further show that not all KETs exert a measurable impact on forward citations and highlight the heterogeneities between the individual KETs. These findings call for a more critical assessment of the KET concept and for nuanced approaches in research and policy.240316

    No full text

The Dark Side of Polar Day - The influence of coastal run-off on Arctic kelp communities

    No full text
Ecosystem engineering kelp forests are subject to many rapid environmental changes in the Arctic. Since the 1980s, the rate of sea surface temperature rise is far beyond the global average. Consequently, glacial and permafrost melt are accelerating, leading to extensive run-off plumes covering fjords. Run-off plumes alter many water column parameters: e.g., high concentrations of suspended particles are changing the photosynthetically active radiation (PAR); terrestrial and lithogenic material alter the macro- and micronutrient concentrations. To be able to maintain a stable population, kelps have to acclimatise to the changing environment. The overarching aim of my doctoral thesis is to assess what defines the boundaries of the realised niche of Arctic kelp forests. In two in-situ monitoring studies, I found high intraspecific variability in the biochemical composition of different Arctic kelp populations, being conditioned by their local environment along the west coast of Svalbard. Hence, performance curves must not be considered static and experimental results have to be extrapolated with care. Investigating the in-situ effect of run-off on kelp holobiont functioning in a high spatial resolution, I additionally found run-off to change the content of (harmful) elements in kelps. This led to changes of the ecosystem services of kelp forests, such as their nutritious value for grazers, or the element cycling of the ecosystem. In three experimental studies, I found that the effect of temperature on kelps is highly interactive with the prevailing PAR availabilities. High-PAR availability caused drastic physiological stress, especially when interacting with cold temperatures, which currently restricts L. hyperborea to expand to higher latitudes. Reduced irradiance resulted in a shift of the kelps’ realised niche and a local loss of habitat for cold-temperate kelps in the Arctic. Concluding, climate change induced Arctic run-off, and especially varying PAR availability, has drastic consequences on the performance of kelps, with the potential to limit Arctic kelp distribution. A shift of the kelps’ distribution has cascading ecological and economic consequences
