Sea-ice dynamics along West Antarctic continental shelves from the last deglacial to the Holocene - A multi-proxy biomarker approach

    No full text
After experiencing three record-breaking low sea-ice summers in a course of seven years, Antarctic sea ice prompts a gaining interest among climate researchers. It is now more important than ever to get the best possible understanding of past Antarctic sea-ice behavior and its response to long- and short-term atmospheric and oceanographic changes on regional and pan-Antarctic scales. The knowledge as well as newly collected data will improve model simulations that aim to predict the future development of this climate-sensitive feature. Therefore, the need for tools that allow consistent and reliable paleo-reconstructions of Southern Ocean sea ice is high. The recently introduced organic sea-ice biomarker proxy IPSO25 has the potential to fulfill this need, however, thorough assessments of its applicability hitherto are sparse. A suite of sediment samples from West Antarctic continental shelves, which are affected most by strongly negative sea-ice trends, were investigated within this thesis to evaluate the proxy’s potential to display the recent and past sea-ice coverage in the study areas. A study on seafloor surface sediments from the West Antarctic Peninsula, the Amundsen and Weddell seas demonstrated that the IPSO25 concentrations within the sediments do not adequately reflect the recent sea-ice conditions derived from satellite and numerical model data. For a semi-quantitative estimation of the sea-ice cover, IPSO25 was combined with a phytoplankton marker, resulting in the sea-ice index PIPSO25 (analogous to the sea-ice index IP25 for the Arctic), that allows are more realistic estimate of sea-ice coverage and hence seems to be a more suitable tool for paleo sea- ice reconstructions. To gather more information on ocean temperature, measurements of isoprenoidal glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers were carried out and compared to instrument measurements of sea surface and subsurface temperatures, revealing the general capability of the proxy to mirror ocean temperatures. In a further study, the applicability of IPSO25 alongside phytoplankton biomarkers, the sea-ice index PIPSO25, sedimentological parameters and physical properties was further investigated by means of a high-resolution sediment core located in the direct vicinity of the Pine Island Glacier in the eastern Amundsen Sea Embayment. Here, the multi-proxy dataset revealed the evolution from a polynya setting towards a more sea- ice dominated regime during the early Holocene and a following build-up of a heavy sea-ice cover. Potential interconnections between the regional sea-ice conditions and the inflow of Circumpolar Deep Water onto the continental shelf were drawn and discussed. For the third study as part of this thesis, IPSO25, phytoplankton biomarkers, the sea- ice index PIPSO25 and sedimentological proxies were used for sea-ice reconstructions in the western Amundsen Sea and compared to winter sea ice-estimates based on diatom assemblages. The multi-proxy dataset documents the waxing and waning of the Getz Ice Shelf since the last deglaciation. The first break-up of the Getz Ice Shelf around 13 cal. ka BP and the establishment of a sea-ice cover was followed by a phase of significantly reduced sea-ice cover at around 12.7 cal. ka BP until a re-expansion of sea ice occurred throughout the Holocene. These developments were linked to interhemispheric climate patterns. Regarding the new findings collected within this thesis, IPSO25 and the PIPSO25 approach can be considered a promising tool for (paleo) sea-ice reconstructions on the continental shelves off West Antarctica when interpreted carefully and alongside other paleoenvironmental parameters

Simulation-based optimization of driving waveforms in turbulent pipe flow

    No full text
In practical applications, flows through pipes predominantly exhibit multi-scale eddying motion patterns, referred to as turbulence. Turbulence is responsible for the majority of the encountered friction and, therefore, accounts for vast amounts of the power input associated with steadily pumping fluids. Remarkably, in pulsatile driven flows, like for example aortic blood flows, features of turbulence are widely suppressed despite relatively large peak flow velocities during systolic phases. In the context of cardiovascular health, reducing turbulence levels and their accompanying phenomena, such as large shear stresses, is essential. From an energy perspective, compared to steady conditions, pulsatile driving can reduce the power input required to satisfy a desired mass flux. However, the specific shape of pulsation is a crucial factor when addressing the question if at all and to what extent, shear stress or power input can be reduced. In this regard, this thesis aims to identify periodic driving waveforms that are optimal in terms of reducing drag and saving power by, overall, diminishing features of turbulence. A simulation-based framework, guided by gradient-free black-box optimization routines, for identifying drag- or energy-optimal driving patterns is developed and applied to turbulent pipe flow. At Reynolds numbers comparable to those of aortic blood flow in large mammals, drag-optimal waveforms reduce shear by roughly up to 30%, whereas energy-optimal waveforms of different shape save up to 13% of energy. At higher flow velocities, the identical driving is capable of reducing drag by approximately 39% and power input by 21% when compared to steady driving. The results demonstrate that the predominant operation mode of steadily pumping fluids through pipes — responsible for an estimated 20% of the global electricity consumption — is far from top-tier effciency

Geometric Computing for Simulation-Based Robot Planning

    No full text
Simulation-based robot planning is a popular approach in robotics that involves using computer simulations to plan and optimize robot motions by envisioning the outcome of generated plans before their execution in the real world. This approach offers several benefits, including the ability to evaluate multiple motion plans, reduce trial-and-error in physical experimentation, and enhance safety by identifying potential collisions and other hazards before executing a motion. Although this approach can significantly benefit robotic manipulation tasks, such simulations are still computationally expensive and may require more computing power than the robotic agents can provide. In addition, uncertainties arising from, i.e., perception or simulation models must be taken into account. Current approaches often require running simulations multiple times with varying parameters to account for these uncertainties, making real-time action planning and execution difficult. This thesis presents an accelerated geometric computation, i.e., CD methods for such simulation, precisely an algorithm based on BVHs and SIMD instruction sets. The main idea is to increase the branching factor of BVH according to available SIMD width and simultaneously test BV nodes for intersection in parallel. In addition, this thesis presents compression strategies for BVH-based CD implemented on two existing CD algorithms, namely Doptree and Boxtree. The idea is to remove redundant information from BVHs, and compress 32-bit floating points used to represent BVHs. This greatly increases the number of simultaneous simulations done in parallel by robotic agents, with most benefitting remote robots, as their computing power is often limited. Furthermore, this thesis presents an idea of benchmarking as an online service. In the literature, it is quite often that the results of proposed algorithms are difficult to replicate due to missing hardware/software and different computing configurations. Combined with the idea of using a virtual machine to safely execute user-uploaded algorithms makes it possible to safely run benchmarks as an online service. Not only are the results reproducible, but they are also comparable, as they are done within the same hardware/software configurations. Finally, this thesis investigates an idea to address uncertainties by incorporating them into simulations. The main concept is to integrate uncertainty as a a probability distribution into CD algorithms. In this sense, CD algorithms will not only report collisions but also the probability when a collision occurs. The outcome is not a simple final state of the simulation but rather a probability map reflecting a continuous distribution of final states

Volume in nature is a foundation of present-day physics. The volume dynamics, VD, is implied by evident properties: invariance of the speed of light and zero rest mass of volume The VD includes: – the existence and reality of volume portions, VPs – change tensors of VPs, including electromagnetic waves – the differential equation describing change tensors, form of wave packets, formation and propagation of VPs – real quantities are identified via the Hacking criterion The VD implies and explains present-day physics, e. g. – gravity and transmission of gravitational interaction – curvature of spacetime – general relativity as a semiclassical and averaging approximation – universal formation of quanta, a generalized Schrödinger equation, the postulates of quantum physics – the Schrödinger equation as a nonrelativistic approximation – an improved and generalized version of quantum field theory, including nonlocality & causality, without infinity – as expected, as real volume inside the light horizon cannot cause a real infinity The VD implies, explains and clarifies properties of space, e. g. – VD implies density of volume in our heterogeneous universe – VD provides the time evolution of the Hubble constant (front cover), this solves the Hubble tension – real VPs represent the wave function and its generalization – VD clarifies real zero-point-oscillations, real Casimir force and real VPs and solves the cosmological constant problem – causality with nonlocality is clarified – formation of matter has been derived – the era of cosmic ‘inflation’ has been derived and clarified – the elementary charge, the electroweak couplings and many elementary particles have been derived and explained – the cosmological parameters have been derived fundamentally Thus, the VD clarifies, generalizes and unifies present-day physics. All results are in precise accordance with observation. Thereby, no fit has been executed, and no hypothesis has been introduced. We derive all findings in a systematic, clear and smooth manner.

Tracing organic matter in a tropical estuary, Jaguaripe River, Brazil - Implications of its origin and distribution

    No full text
Tropical estuarine systems are important links between terrestrial and marine realms. Large amounts of organic matter (OM) originating from a variety of sources are transported through them. OM that enters estuarine waters as suspended particulate organic matter (SPOM) settles either in estuarine systems and becomes part of the sediment organic matter (SOM) pool or is transported through the estuary and eventually reaches marine waters. Both SPOM and SOM are degraded and transformed by biochemical processes over time in estuarine waters. As a result, OM is converted to dissolved organic matter (DOM), which is the third form of OM present in estuarine systems that has been investigated in this thesis. Until today, tracking the movement of OM in estuarine systems remains challenging because all three forms of OM are subject to different drivers that shape their dynamics. A crucial part of better understanding complex OM dynamics in estuarine systems is identifying the composition of OM sources contributing to their respective OM pools. Many methods applied in the literature to trace OM sources, such as stable isotope-based mixing models, are limited in which sources can effectively be differentiated. Thus, this thesis presents the novel analytical approach of pyrolysis gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py-GC-MS) to identify sources contributing to OM pools in a tropical estuarine system. The newly developed bioinformatics pipeline for data processing as the basis allowed us to trace OM sources in SPOM and SOM pools. Py-GC-MS analysis was used in comparison with the well-established approach of stable isotope-based mixing models to access OM source contributions to SOM pools within mangrove forests bordering the Jaguaripe River estuary, Bahia, Brazil. This comparison revealed clear advantages of Py-GC-MS analysis over stable isotope analysis for accessing the composition of SOM pools with a variety of potential OM source groups present. A strong relationship was found between mangrove SOM and OM derived from terrestrial plants. This relationship indicates a strong OM influx through the Jaguaripe River into the mangrove sediments. Additionally, different contribution levels of coastal pelagic OM (representing OM from mainly pelagic phyto-, zooplankton) to the SOM pools in mangrove forests between seasons were revealed. This indicates OM inputs to SOM pools in mangrove forests to be influenced by a combination of riverine and tidal water-driven water movements alike. Compositional differences in OM source contributions were investigated for SPOM and SOM pools along the middle to lower Jaguaripe River estuary using Py-GC-MS. Coastal pelagic OM dominated the contributions to SPOM. Mangrove-derived OM was only detected in SPOM samples collected during the rainy season which is likely related to an increased import of OM particles from mangroves into estuarine waters by surface runoff. Compositional differences between OM sources contributing to SOM pools along the estuary showed clear differences between the middle and lower estuary. Sediments from the middle estuary showed strong OM contributions from terrestrial plants and mangroves. In contrast, sediments from the lower estuary had higher contributions of macroalgae-derived and coastal pelagic OM. OM contributions from terrestrial plants and mangroves detected further downstream during the rainy season indicated shifting dynamics of water movement between seasons. Shifts between seasons are likely linked to changing water discharge rates through the Jaguaripe River. Additionally, thermal stability analysis revealed increased levels of SOM degradation downstream along the estuary, which was not the case for SPOM. This pattern of SOM stability along the estuary is indicative of the turbulent flow regimes at the bottom of the estuary that shape its fate. SOM is frequently re-suspended from the bottom of the subjecting it further degradation. This re-suspension is caused by interactions between tidal and riverine water movements causing turbulent forces near the bottom of the estuary. Differences in DOM compositions along the middle and lower estuaries of the Jaguaripe River were analysed using Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS). Overall, elevated organic carbon concentrations along the middle estuary fringed by mangrove forests suggest they are an important source of DOM to the estuarine waters. Elevated concentrations of sulphur-containing compounds and saturated compounds with low O/C ratios, which are both strongly associated with OM transformation processes by sulphur-reducing bacteria in OM-rich and anoxic sediments, were detected along the middle estuary during the dry season. Depletion of total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) and nitrogen-containing aliphatic compounds in DOM pools indicate processes of increased nitrogen removal within mangroves during the wet season. These two observed differences revealed seasonally shifting DOM dynamics, with mangroves being sources of sulphur-containing compounds in one season and a sink for nitrogen in the other. Modeling of tracing indices for terrigenous, mangrove porewater-derived- and mangrove leaf-leached OM showed additional evidence of seasonal shifts of DOM dynamics along the estuary. These results further strengthened the hypothesis that riverine water flow and tidal movements are the strongest drivers shaping DOM dynamics in the Jaguaripe River estuary. This work contributes to a better understanding of DOM transport within and beyond the estuary boundaries and the potential drivers behind it. Water movements driven by tidal forces and riverine discharge rates were both indicated to strongly affect OM transport along and across the tropical estuary of the Jaguaripe River. The results further imply a highly complex interplay of tidal movements and river flow regimes. The basic findings of these in combination with identified contribution levels of different OM sources allowed for a better understanding of how human activities could affect them in the future.

Navigating the challenges of urbanization and turbidity: ecological implications and management strategies for coral reef ecosystems

    No full text
Coastal urbanization poses severe challenges to coral reef ecosystems, leading to habitat degradation, reduced biodiversity, and altered ecological dynamics. This thesis investigates the impacts of urban stressors, including turbidity, on coral reef dynamics and processes in Indonesia. The research, structured into seven studies, reveals six key findings: (1) Turbidity and island-based activities are key stressors on Spermonde Archipelago reefs, with severe turbidity limited to approximately 5 km from the mainland and decreasing offshore. (2) A notable shift from coral-dominated to algae-dominated habitats has occurred over the past two decades, with distinct spatial variability in benthic and reef fish conditions across the archipelago. (3) Turf algae dynamics reveal a clear inshore-to-offshore gradient, with bottom-up mechanisms driving turf algae growth more strongly than top-down control mechanisms. (4) Urban stressors significantly impact reef fish dynamics, with more diverse and abundant fish communities in clearer, shallower middle-to-offshore reefs, and herbivory playing a crucial role in maintaining reef health. (5) Coral reef resilience in the face of rapid urbanization is influenced by a complex interplay of strengthening and weakening factors, with some positive adaptations observed but also challenges from urban stressors and limited functional redundancy. (6) Marine protected areas (MPAs) and other effective area-based conservation measures (OECMs) offer potential strategies for managing urban reefs, but must be integrated with broader management approaches addressing land-based impacts. The study underscores the urgent need for comprehensive management approaches to mitigate the accelerating degradation of urban coral reefs, ensuring the conservation of biodiversity and essential ecosystem services

Kernelization Complexity of Solution Discovery Problems

    No full text
In the solution discovery variant of a vertex (edge) subset problem Π on graphs, we are given an initial configuration of tokens on the vertices (edges) of an input graph G together with a budget b. The question is whether we can transform this configuration into a feasible solution of Π on G with at most b modification steps. We consider the token sliding variant of the solution discovery framework, where each modification step consists of sliding a token to an adjacent vertex (edge). The framework of solution discovery was recently introduced by Fellows et al. [ECAI 2023] and for many solution discovery problems the classical as well as the parameterized complexity has been established. In this work, we study the kernelization complexity of the solution discovery variants of Vertex Cover, Independent Set, Dominating Set, Shortest Path, Matching, and Vertex Cut with respect to the parameters number of tokens k, discovery budget b, as well as structural parameters such as pathwidth.36:136:1

Addiction in the brain? Significance and implications of neurobiological explanations of addiction A study among international addiction researchers with quantitative and qualitative methodological approaches

    No full text
