Dehumanization of refugee children in Swedish media : A content analysis of Swedish newspaper articles from year 2015-2022
Wars, conflicts, natural disasters, and poverty are several reasons why millions of children worldwide are fleeing their homes and seeking refuge in other countries. The Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) emphasizes the obligation of the recipient countries to promote the physical and mental recovery and integration of refugee children into society. Refugee children can in turn be perceived by the host country as long-term investments or financial burdens. The objectification of perceiving human beings as assets or burdens, rather than human, is an indication of dehumanization. Dehumanizing perceptions and views are formed by people or societies and can be spread with the help of various media platforms. This study examines 24 Swedish newspaper articles, published between the years 2015-2022, with the aim to analyze whether and how the articles use dehumanizing words, expressions, and assumptions in their representation of refugee children. To identify dehumanizing words, expressions and assumptions from the selected newspaper articles, Nick Haslam's theory of dehumanization is applied. This is a qualitative content analysis, with quantitative elements. Carol Lee Bacchi’s qualitative analysis tool, what's the problem represented to be? (WPR), is used to analyze how refugee children are represented and perceived in the newspaper articles. Upon reviewing the newspaper articles, the results were decided into four overall dehumanizing categories: 1) asset, 2) burden, 3) criminality and 4) grouping. Furthermore, the results show that the dehumanizing representations of refugee children within the newspaper articles indicates mechanistic dehumanization as well as animalistic dehumanization.
Human rights and social work in public administration : An interview study with social service officials
The Swedish government has in national action plans and development cooperation pointed out the importance of relizing human rights at the municipal level. One of the municipality`s areas of responsibility is to attain a social service based on principals of democracy and solidarity. In addition, the social worker must apply national legislation, international human rights commitments and a user- or client perspective. The main purpose of the study is to investigate the importance of employees in the realization of human rights in the activities of social services. The study is based on interviews with employees in the social services. The results of the study are analyzed on the basis of theories regarding democracy, law enforcement and social work. The results show that the social workers in the exercise of authority need to apply different perspectives that are sometimes contradictory. The result indicates that the power to realize human rights in the social services is divided between structural factors and factors that have to do with the individual social worker.
The use of erotic pleasures : A deal with the fear of the impure pleasure in the pursuit of a theology of lust
The Ethics of Sex.The purpose of this essay is to examine the theological aspects of human sexual desire. Through a poetic-philosophical analysis of Alina Reye's erotic novel The Butcher and 14th Century Mystic Julian of Norwich's book Revelations of the Divine Love, the essay aims to shed light on relevant theological themes and issues concerning sexuality's connection to theology and the talk of eros as the divine origin of desire. The study also aims to explore how the themes of sexual desire that emerge through this analysis can be considered to correlate with the contemporary theologians Carter Heyward and Ola Sigurdson's views on sexuality. As a theoretical framework, five hypotheses regarding sexuality are used, which are taken from Mark D. Jordan's reasoning in the book The Ethics of Sex
Locked in and Left Out : A Qualitative Study on the Impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic on the Right to Health for Female Refugees Living in Athens
The purpose of this thesis is to understand the impact of the covid-19 pandemic on the right tohealth for female refugees living in Athens. The paper is based on data derived from semi-structured interviews with female refugees and aid-workers working on the field in Athens. The interviews are complemented with a field study as a participant observer in a small school run by an NGO in Athens. The theoretical framework for the analysis of the empirical data is social exclusion. The conclusion is that the covid-19 pandemic has had a severe impact on the right to health for female refugees living in Athens. Covid-19 restrictions and regulations are keeping people without papers out from the health care system and making it harder for approved refugees to get health care. Refugee women are experiencing extra difficulties through the restrictions, due to intersectional discrimination of gender and race of the host society and through traditional gender roles within their culture. Refugees access to social networks has decreased, especially the possibility to get help from NGO:s that are dependent on private funding, which has decreased incident to the pandemic. NGO:s also had to shut down the social parts of their work due to lockdowns. This has increased social isolation and made mental health problems and poverty worse. Some NGO: s has restrictions about vaccines or negative covid-tests which have an impact on refugees without possibility to get vaccinated or tested. The pandemic has also increased racism towards refugees and enhanced the possibilities of abuse of power from the police
Accessibility in the City of Stockholm : a qualitive study from the perspective of wheelchair users
This study aims to investigate what accessibility looks like in the city of Stockholm from wheelchair users and from a human rights perspective. The study also aims to shed light on how the Traffic Office in Stockholm works with accessibility. I have chosen to do a qualitive study where the empirical data was obtained from three different source materials. Partly via individual semi-structured interviews with the Traffic Office and with three wheelchair users who live in the city of Stockholm. Partly via two participant observations with a wheelchair user. Finally, from the swedish handbook Stockholm - en stad för alla (2008), written by the Traffic Office, which is based on laws and guidelines of how to make an environment useful for people with disabilities. The study shows that there are environmental barriers for people with disabilities in Stockholm. These can be lack of architectural structures (e.g. ramps, elevators), obstacles in the environment as well as inaccessible buildings. The study also shows that the functioning body as a norm is constantly present and much in our society is adapted accordingly. Based on Crip-theory, the study focuses on wheelchair users perspectives and their experiences of when their disability in relation to the environment becomes a functional limitation.
Like Lightning from Clear Blue Skies : A Literary Analysis of Luke 10:17–24
The purpose of this essay has been to examine the literary unit of Luke 10:17–24 in its literary context, and to learn what Luke might have intended to mediate about Satan’s, Jesus’ and the seventy(-two)’s power in relation to the kingdom of God. This has been done through a literary and redaction critical analysis. Special attention has been paid to Luke’s ordering of his material, his understanding of Satan in comparison with other jewish apocalyptic writings and his view on discipleship. This essay argues that Luke has constructed his literary unit from both own material and material found in “Q” to create a juxtaposition between Jesus and Satan, and to communicate that the fall of Satan and the arrival of the kingdom of God are two coincident events. Furthermore, this essay claims that there are intrinsic connections between the mission of the seventy(-two) and the mission of Jesus in Luke’s narrative
”Where mercy and love lives – there is also Gud” : Implicit Ecclesiology in the Diaconia in theParish of Huddinge
