Listening to Listeners in a Digital Culture : The Practice of Listening to Digitally-Mediated Sermons

    No full text
This study examines digitally-mediated sermon listening practices by interviewing twenty-nine listeners from Swedish Protestant congregations. The analysis draws on Theodore Schatzki’s practice theory, focusing on the entanglement of human activity, material arrangements surrounding the preaching event, and the ends of practices—including how changes to any or all of the above impact the practice in question. The study found that listeners strove to uphold the listening practices they were accustomed to from their respective churchesand attempted to carry these over into the digitally-mediated preaching event. To a large extent, they succeeded in opening and managing a “third room of preaching.” Furthermore, the studyhighlighted the importance of knowing the ends of these listening practices. The study alsodemonstrated the significance of material arrangements and how changes in these arrangementssometimes led to the obstruction—or even breakdown—of listening practices. However, changesin material arrangements also inspired new practices—pointing to the need to rethink listeningpractices that are merely borrowed from in-church services.  Ingår i doktorsavhandlingen (sammanläggning) Co-preaching: The Practice of Preaching in Digital Culture and Spaces.</p

Helighet och miljö i etiopisk hagiografi : Den helige Gebre Menfes Qiddus liv

    No full text
The original forests of the central and northern highlands of Ethiopia are almost entirely confined to the “sacred groves” surrounding the churches and monasteries of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church. In Ethiopian tradition sanctity starts from the Tabot on the altar of the church and extends to the outer periphery of the compound. Church forests serve as shade and shelter for the sacred, and are seen as integral parts of the churchyard. The Act of Gebre Menfes Qiddus (GGMQ) is an original Ethiopic hagiographic text. It depicts the life and struggle of the saint in the wilderness of forests and mountains. Hagiographic texts like GGMQ are in Ethiopia not mere historical records, but texts linked to the daily liturgical services that shape and mould the perceptions and actions of their readers and listeners.  The aim of the thesis is to analyse how GGMQ presents the relation between the saint and the natural environment in order to see if there is a correlation with how the Ethiopian tradition has preserved the church forests and has considered these to be sacred spaces representing the wilderness. The aim is achieved through a close reading of the text and its intertexts using four selected themes as analytical instruments: ascetic estrangement, coexistence with non-human creation, identification with the angels and reconciliation of opposites.  The analysis, and the fact that the GGMQ is one of the most venerated texts, read and heard with great liturgical solemnity, show that there are good reasons to believe that the constant reading of GGMQ has made and makes a significant impact upon the readers’ views on the mutual co-habitation of human and non-human creation and the development of an awareness of the need to preserve the wilderness and non-human creation.

Desire in the Epistel of Romans

    No full text
The purpose of this essay is to examine and interpret Paul’s usage and mening of the concept of ἐπιθυμία in the Epistle to the Romans. My examination and interpretation has been conducted through exegetical literary analysis of Romans 1:18–32, 6–8 and 13, where I with the support of previous research, first introduced the concept of ἐπιθυμία in its historical context. Then I show how the concept of ἐπιθυμία plays a key role in understanding his argument in the Epistle to the Romans.

Co-preaching : The Practice of Preaching in Digital Culture and Spaces

    No full text
The purposes of this article-based thesis are to explore and understand preaching as a practice in general, and the practice of preaching in digital culture and spaces in particular. Informed by the practicetheory of Theodore Schatzki, it presents the results of a cross-case analysis of four di!erent case studiesof the practice of preaching in digital culture and spaces in Swedish protestant churches. Based on theanalysis, I argue that the deep relationality of the practice of preaching involves not just humans andtexts but also material arrangements and that this feature often is ampli"ed in digital culture and spaces. While there were examples of a decrease, overall, there was an increase in interaction, negotiation, andinterdependency. In light of this, I contend that the practice of preaching in digital culture and spacesis characterized by co-preaching. Moreover, I argue that some of the implications of co-preaching arethe enabling and encouragement of dialogue, imagination, and the priestly function of the priesthoodof all believers, but also an increased vulnerability for the co-preachers involved

Representation Grounds for the Muslim Brotherhood with Focus on Muslim Brotherhood in Syria

    No full text
The relationship between religion and politics is a controversial issue. It is one of the most difficult issues in many regions of the world. The social impact resulting from politicized religious movements is complicated, especially in countries where religion plays a pivotal role in formulating politics, such as in Syria and some other Middle Eastern countries.  One of the issues of great sensitivity in some societies, especially those with active religious movements and parties, is religious and/or political representation. Each religious group claims to have a profound social depth. These claims are supported by large segments of people. Rival groups, however, may have different opinions. Some politico-religious organizations claim that they are the only representatives of certain groups of people and thus, claim legitimacy on the ground of such representation. This applies to the Muslim Brothers in Syria (SMB), who claim representation of certain segments of the Syrian society, mainly the Sunni Muslims.  This thesis attempts to research the issue of the representation of the Muslim Brotherhood with the focus on Syria.

The Tidö Agreement and the Duty to Report : A Comparison of Current and ProposedLegislation

In this thesis, an examination of the Tidö Agreement is conducted in relation to the new legislative proposal regarding the reporting obligation for individuals staying illegally in the country. The background of the essay is based on criticism from various professional groups claiming that the legislative proposal contradicts various regulations and professional ethics. Consequently, the purpose of the essay has been to highlight the differences between various conventions and laws by analyzing the Tidö Agreement, specifically the section related to the reporting obligation. The research question in the essay has thus been formulated as follows: In what way does the current reporting obligation differ from the legislative proposal, and how do Swedish legislation and Sweden's international obligations relate to the potential new reporting obligation for undocumented individuals? Given the extensive nature of the Tidö Agreement, as well as the conventions and laws, the focus has been on the parts related to the reporting obligation and the rights of undocumented individuals. The thesis has also adopted a legal dogmatic method, which briefly involves problematizing existing law. The results indicated that the legislative proposal aimed at addressing the shadow economy could potentially conflict with existing Swedish legislation and Sweden's international commitments, especially regarding privacy protection and confidentiality within education and healthcare. This includes considerations under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and ICESCR. The legislative proposal on the reporting obligation also turned out to differ significantly from the current reporting obligation law, thus signaling a change in the direction of the reporting obligation

“Invisible children” : A qualitative study on the work of organisations to promote support for future children born of war

    No full text
Sexual violence perpetrated against women during armed conflicts represents a severe violation of their fundamental human rights. This heinous act not only inflicts significant harm on the women themselves but also results in the birth of children conceived due to wartime rape. Previous research has marked that children born of war encounter various forms of discrimination, stigma, neglect, abuse, and sometimes limited access to education and healthcare. As a vulnerable group, children born of war often have single mothers who have experienced sexual violence, resulting in potential lack of support from their family and communities. This paper investigates the circumstances and obstacles faced by children born of war but also what is necessary to properly support these children, according to the five organisations interviewed. It shines light on the need for comprehensive support systems to address their specific needs in the future, such as the urgent need for early interventions and psychological support, along with providing children born of war the opportunity to connect with their biological heritage to foster a sense of identity amongst others

"Bread is one, broken for all...or is it?" : On communion, its openness and consequence

    No full text
This essay aims to study the Eucharist in three Protestant church traditions, based with a special interest in its openness and consequences. Are there any restrictions who can receive communion? What importance do these traditions attach to the Lord's supper; what consequences does it have? The essay is based on four documents, an ecumenical document from the World Council of Churches, and a document each from the United Methodist Church, the Church of Sweden and the Uniting Church in Sweden. The investigation concludes that the Church of Sweden is not completely consistent in its view of the Eucharist - the Eucharist is a meal for the baptized, but practice can vary. The presence of the Holy Spirit and the connection between the Eucharist and sanctification are less emphasized in the Church of Sweden, while it is stressed in the Uniting Church in Sweden and the UnitedMethodist Church. The author concludes that the communion table should be open to all who seek it. He also longs for a communion revival in his own Church community, which is The Uniting Church in Sweden
