Accelerometer derived physical activity and subclinical coronary and carotid atherosclerosis : cross-sectional analyses in 22 703 middle-aged men and women in the SCAPIS study.
OBJECTIVES: The aim included investigation of the associations between sedentary (SED), low-intensity physical activity (LIPA), moderate-to-vigorous intensity PA (MVPA) and the prevalence of subclinical atherosclerosis in both coronaries and carotids and the estimated difference in prevalence by theoretical reallocation of time in different PA behaviours. DESIGN: Cross-sectional. SETTING: Multisite study at university hospitals. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 22 670 participants without cardiovascular disease (51% women, 57.4 years, SD 4.3) from the population-based Swedish CArdioPulmonary bioImage study were included. SED, LIPA and MVPA were assessed by hip-worn accelerometer. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOMES: Any and significant subclinical coronary atherosclerosis (CA), Coronary Artery Calcium Score (CACS) and carotid atherosclerosis (CarA) were derived from imaging data from coronary CT angiography and carotid ultrasound. RESULTS: High daily SED (>70% ≈10.5 hours/day) associated with a higher OR 1.44 (95% CI 1.09 to 1.91), for significant CA, and with lower OR 0.77 (95% CI 0.63 to 0.95), for significant CarA. High LIPA (>55% ≈8 hours/day) associated with lower OR for significant CA 0.70 (95% CI 0.51 to 0.96), and CACS, 0.71 (95% CI 0.51 to 0.97), but with higher OR for CarA 1.41 (95% CI 1.12 to 1.76). MVPA above reference level, >2% ≈20 min/day, associated with lower OR for significant CA (OR range 0.61-0.67), CACS (OR range 0.71-0.75) and CarA (OR range 0.72-0.79). Theoretical replacement of 30 min of SED into an equal amount of MVPA associated with lower OR for significant CA, especially in participants with high SED 0.84 (95% CI 0.76 to 0.96) or low MVPA 0.51 (0.36 to 0.73). CONCLUSIONS: MVPA was associated with a lower risk for significant atherosclerosis in both coronaries and carotids, while the association varied in strength and direction for SED and LIPA, respectively. If causal, clinical implications include avoiding high levels of daily SED and low levels of MVPA to reduce the risk of developing significant subclinical atherosclerosis
BlocklyVR : Exploring Block-based Programming in Virtual Reality
As programming is typically a static activity in front of a screen, we perform an initial exploration around the capabilities of block-based programming in the immersive space using Virtual Reality (VR) to make an early charting on how programming could involve moving the programmer's body. We created a block-based programming interface in a VR space called BlocklyVR based on the existing Blockly programming environment. To investigate programmer performance and experience in BlocklyVR, we conducted a controlled lab experiment (N = 20) with eight programming tasks that covered mathematical operations, if-statements, and function creation. Our initial exploration contributes by classifying movement types made by BlocklyVR programmers and reflecting on how these movements are related to the programming tasks. Additionally, our data suggests that participant performance in BlocklyVR was not affected compared to the 2D Blockly, even if participants were physically moving in VR space. We also found that the virtual reality sickness was marginal. Lastly, we identified four types of interaction that can potentially be employed by VR designers and developers aiming to convert a static task, like programming at a desk, into a "mobile"immersive experience. © 2023 Owner/Author
Health education in Sweden and Finland : a pupil perspective
Concerns have been raised nationally and internationally about the health of children and young people. Since knowledge about health has been shown to relate to the health of individuals, there is a need for more research on how health education should be organized. The purpose of this study is to investigate is to contribute knowledge about the teaching of and about health in two countries with a similar context but different organization of health education. The research questions are "how do the students describe health" and "what do the students feel they have learned about health at school". In addition, similarities and differences between the Finland and Sweden are discussed. The study is based on theories of pathogenic and salutogenic perspectives on health and health literacy. Data has been collected through semi-structured interviews with four Swedish and four Finnish high school students. The data has been analyzed using thematic analysis and the constructed themes are the results of the study. The results show that health is seen as the absence of disease, as a continuum or as mental, physical and sometimes social. The Finnish students are more likely to also include the social part than the Swedish students. From their health education in school, the students have learned knowledge in and about health, parts of healthism, taboo themes of health and individual responsibility on health. Knowledge of students' perceptions of health education is important because the students can answer how the education is delivered in the best way for them. Several interdisciplinary and international studies are needed to get knowledge on how the organization of health education affects students' knowledge and learning in and about health
"Above all it´s about creating relationships" : A qualitative interview study on the work of physical education teachers to create an inclusive learning environment for all students
Aim: The purpose of the study is to study inclusion work from a physical education teacher's perspective, to give an image of what work with inclusion looks like and what challenges the teachers face. This is to contribute knowledge about how a good learning environment is created so that more students can be given the opportunity to achieve the knowledge requirements. The following questions have been formulated in order to answer the purpose of the study: What factors do the teachers consider to be decisive in achieving an inclusive learning environment? What methods do the teachers use to create an inclusive learning environment? How do the teachers experience the work of creating an inclusive learning environment? Method: The method used is of a qualitative nature and data collection has been carried out through a series of semi-structured interviews. Six teachers in physical education and health were selected through a goal-directed selection which later also expressed itself through a snowball selection. The interviews took place both physically on site at the schools where the teachers work and via the digital meeting platform Zoom. The interviews was then transcribed by hand to be analyzed using thematic analysis. As a theoretical framework, frame factor theory and Scheff's theory of social bonds were used. Results: The teachers believe that the most important factors for achieving an inclusive learning environment are: leadership, relationship building and adaptations. It is important that the teacher radiates a confident leadership where a commitment and interest in the students is at the center. In order to reach the students, the teacher needs to be able to create trusting relationships with the students. The teachers do this in one way or another throughout the school day by being responsive and interested. Furthermore, the teachers try to organize the teaching so that the students are allowed to work according to their own ability and to their individual level. The teachers feel that they have good opportunities to create an inclusive learning environment despite large classes. Conclusions: Through flexibility, commitment, interest and a certain amount of ingenuity, the teachers find a way to create an inclusive learning environment. The teachers do this through clear leadership, relationship building and various didactic choices. This despite large classes and sometimes questionable support from management
Technical differences in the execution of underwater kicks in swimming : A quantitative study on Swedish junior swimmers
Convergent validity of commonly used questions assessing physical activity and sedentary time in Swedish patients after myocardial infarction.
BACKGROUND: Guidelines recommend regular physical activity (PA) and decreased sedentary time (SED) for patients after myocardial infarction (MI). Therefore, valid self-assessment of PA is vital in clinical practice. The purpose of this study was to assess the convergent validity of commonly used PA and SED questions recommended by the National Board of Health and welfare (NBHW) and national SWEDEHEART-registry using accelerometers as the reference method in patients after MI. METHODS: Data were obtained 2017-2021 among Swedish men and women (180 assessments). Participants answered five commonly used PA and SED-questions (by NBHW and SWEDEHEART) and wore an accelerometer (Actigraph GT3X) for seven days. Convergent validity was assessed gradually by; Kruskall Wallis-, Sperman rho, Weighted Kappa- and ROC-analyses. Misclassification was explored by Chi-square analyses with Benjamini-Hochberg adjustment. RESULTS: The strongest correlation (r = 0.37) was found for the SED-GIH question (NBHW). For PA, no specific question stood out, with correlations of r = 0.31 (NBWH), and r = 0.24-0.30 (SWEDEHEART). For all questions (NBHW and SWEDEHEART), there was a high degree of misclassification (congruency 12-30%) affecting the agreement (0.09-0.32) between self-report and accelerometer assessed time. The SED-GIH, PA-index and SWEDEHEART-VPA had the strongest sensitivity for identifying individuals with high SED (0.72) or low PA (0.77 and 0.75). CONCLUSION: The studied PA and SED questions may provide an indication of PA and SED level among patients with MI in clinical practice and could be used to form a basis for further dialogue and assessment. Further development is needed, since practical assessment tools of PA and SED are desirable
THRIFTY : a novel high-throughput method for rapid fibre type identification of isolated skeletal muscle fibres.
Fibre type-specific analyses are required for broader understanding of muscle physiology, but such analyses are difficult to conduct due to the extreme time requirements of dissecting and fibre typing individual fibres. Investigations are often confined to a small number of fibres from few participants with low representativeness of the entire fibre population and the participant population. To increase the feasibility of conducting large-scale fibre type-specific studies, a valid and rapid method for high-throughput fibre typing of individually dissected fibres was developed and named THRIFTY (for high-THRoughput Immunofluorescence Fibre TYping). Employing THRIFTY, 400 fibre segments were fixed onto microscope slides with a pre-printed coordinated grid system, probed with antibodies against myosin heavy chain (MyHC)-I and MyHC-II and classified using a fluorescence microscope. The validity and speed of THRIFTY was compared to a previously validated protocol (dot blot) on a fibre-to-fibre basis. Fibre pool purity was evaluated using 'gold standard' SDS-PAGE and silver staining. A modified THRIFTY-protocol using fluorescence western blot equipment was also validated. THRIFTY displayed excellent agreement with the dot blot protocol, κ = 0.955 (95% CI: 0.928, 0.982), P < 0.001. Both the original and modified THRIFTY protocols generated type I and type II fibre pools of absolute purity. Using THRIFTY, 400 fibres were typed just under 11 h, which was approximately 3 times faster than dot blot. THRIFTY is a novel and valid method with high versatility for very rapid fibre typing of individual fibres. THRIFTY can therefore facilitate the generation of large fibre pools for more extensive mechanistic studies into skeletal muscle physiology. KEY POINTS: Skeletal muscle is composed of different fibre types, each with distinct physiological properties. To fully understand how skeletal muscle adapts to external cues such as exercise, nutrition and ageing, fibre type-specific investigations are required. Such investigations are very difficult to conduct due to the extreme time requirements related to classifying individually isolated muscle fibres. To bypass this issue, we have developed a rapid and reliable method named THRIFTY which is cheap as well as versatile and which can easily be implemented in most laboratories. THRIFTY increases the feasibility of conducting larger fibre type-specific studies and enables time-sensitive assays where measurements need to be carried out in close connection with tissue sampling. By using THRIFTY, new insights into fibre type-specific muscle physiology can be gained which may have broad implications in health and disease
Biplanar Videoradiography Dataset for Model-based Pose Estimation Development and New User Training
Measuring the motion of the small foot bones is critical for understanding pathological loss of function. Biplanar videoradiography is well-suited to measure in vivo bone motion, but challenges arise when estimating the rotation and translation (pose) of each bone. The bone's pose is typically estimated with marker- or model-based methods. Marker-based methods are highly accurate but uncommon in vivo due to their invasiveness. Model-based methods are more common but are currently less accurate as they rely on user input and lab-specific algorithms. This work presents a rare in vivo dataset of the calcaneus, talus, and tibia poses, as measured with marker-based methods during running and hopping. A method is included to train users to improve their initial guesses into model-based pose estimation software, using marker-based visual feedback. New operators were able to estimate bone poses within 2° of rotation and 1 mm of translation of the marker-based pose, similar to an expert user of the model-based software, and representing a substantial improvement over previously reported inter-operator variability. Further, this dataset can be used to validate other model-based pose estimation software. Ultimately, sharing this dataset will improve the speed and accuracy with which users can measure bone poses from biplanar videoradiography
